why not make a big impact

Dear Friends and Colleagues in Philanthropy,

4

Turkish Philanthropy Funds’ (TPF) undying commitment to social change derives from us asking ourselves, ‘Why not make a big impact?’ We start each day with the intention of providing new opportunities throughout Turkey, increasing social awareness and guiding our donors to reach their philanthropic goals. Through this practice and the backing of our supporters TPF has become what it is today. Özlenen Eser Kalav

Contributing to our global society by giving back in a purposeful manner lies at the heart of our vision. Turkish Philanthropy Funds tackles complex issues affecting Turkey today through smart social investments. And staying true to our inspiration, we ensure these investments not only remain sustainable in the long term, but also “make a big impact.” February 2014 marked seven years from TPF’s inception. Our results are easily measurable. In just those seven years, you have given us the opportunity to strategi cally invest $12.6 million in social development projects in Turkey. Currently, we are supporting 130 projects that span across 59 cities throughout the country in fields ranging from education to health to disaster relief. Our sophisticated and innovative approach to creating individualized philanthropic plans has attracted about 2000 philanthropists as donors. While serving the people of Turkey and our donors, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of accountability and transparency. These past twelve months have been particularly exciting for TPF in terms of what we have accomplished. Investing nearly $1 million into projects in Turkey proved this year to be among our most effective years to date. We have our 43 partner organi zations on the ground to thank for carrying out successful projects. TPF qualifies expert organizations in the field to join our team as partners. Our latest addition, Darüşşafaka Society, is a pioneer in education and among the most reputable non profits in Turkey. Collaborating with trustworthy organizations that best carry out our mission is of utmost importance to TPF. This past year, one cause that stood out was gender equality. During one particular campaign, within a timespan of 24 hours, hundreds of donors came together to send 18 girls through school. In another instance, just one donor built an entire kilim-

weaving workshop to empower over about 20 girls every day. Every donation counts, no matter the size. Through TPF, your gift will always make an impact. Turkish-American organizations around the country realize our capability to deliver results fast. That is why, during an emergency, they partner with TPF. When the mining disaster in Soma, Manisa, took place, TPF immediately became the hub for collecting donations. These organizations know TPF works with dedicated experts on the ground to allocate the funds most efficiently.

We curated this impact report for you to be used as a blueprint for your philanthropic journey. We are privileged to share with you inspiring real stories both from our donors and from the field. Our toolbox will lead you into starting your first or gearing up for your next project. Our detailed grants report is your roadmap as it highlights the road we traveled together in 2013-2014 and points the way ahead in 20142015. Our Board of Directors and staff, or your team, are ready to offer expert advice and guide you through the process of giving. In short, TPF is at your service. We are dedicated to helping you make your mark on Turkey. We thank you for your support if you are a loyal donor and welcome you to our TPF family if we have just found you.

Zİya Boyacıgİller Commemoration TPF lost a great friend and a leader on June 19, 2014. Ziya Boyacıgiller was known to most as a mentor. Having lived a life filled with passion for his work, generosity and a deep desire to make a difference, those surrounding Ziya had a lot to learn from him. Ziya’s early career was as a design engineer but he very quickly caught the start up bug, creating “EZCAD” with a friend just a few years out of graduate school. Ziya was one of the initial members and leaders of Maxim Integrated Products, working initially in engineering and then moving to the managerial side. To this day some of the managerial innovations Ziya brought to the company are still in practice according to his dear friend and colleague, Tunc Doluca, CEO of Maxim. Upon leaving Maxim, Ziya developed what his wife, Nakiye, refers to as a “portfolio career”, working only projects which gave him joy and where he felt he could make a real difference. Chief among these were angel investing, teaching and, of course, spending more time with his beloved daughters, Belkis and Esen. When the family returned to Turkey in 2003, Ziya took on the mission of doing all he could to ensure that entrepreneurship, especially tech nology related ventures, took hold in his home country.

He made such an impression on all of his mentees, that to this day, if one of them finds themselves at an impasse or a difficult decision, they turn to themselves and ask, ‘What Would Ziya Abi Do?’ After serving three years on TPF’s Board of Directors, giving insightful ideas and leading TPF’s second Five-Year Strategic Plan, he became a member of our Council of Trustees, created to honor the leadership, guidance and devotion of our past board members. To everyone at TPF, he was known as an effective leader because of his tremendous ability to inspire people, his unique strategic insight and his calm personality. Ziya, an entrepreneur by trade and by nature, was also one of TPF’s founding partners. Haldun Tashman, TPF’s Chairman Emeritus, says he will always remember Ziya’s innate kindness. While in İstanbul, Haldun recounts Ziya always suggesting to meet him at the Bebek Hotel. There were other places in the area to have coffee or drinks, but every time Ziya would ask to meet at the same place: the Bebek Hotel. In fact, he even used the same corner table.

Ziya Boyacıgiller

Haldun says he would always arrive early and greet him with a wide smile. One day, it finally occurred to Haldun why Ziya always chose this location. Haldun said “Ziya, I get it. This is your office!” Ziya laughed and said “indeed it is”. Ziya enjoyed meeting at the hotel because it was beautiful and convenient but most importantly, he could leave when he needed to, not when his guest wanted to! Ziya was said to have a contagious enthusiasm about learning that rubbed off on those he assisted. He made such an impre ssion on all of his mentees, that to this day, if one of them finds themselves at an impasse or a difficult decision, they turn to themselves and ask, ‘What Would Ziya Abi Do?’, noted members of Endeavor Turkey, a non-profit focused on iden tifying and supporting “high-impact” entrepreneurs. Ziya was Endeavor Turkey’s Founding Advisory Board member. Ziya was so invested and committed to the cause that he volunteered a tremendous amount of his time to make Endeavor a successful organization by guiding its employees, marketing the organi zation, and giving strategy ideas. Ziya was also a founding member of Galata Business Angels (GBA). In fact, this was where referring to Ziya as Ziya Abi took hold among the entrepreneurial community. Since angel investing is relatively new in Turkey, the initial members of GBA were almost always younger than Ziya. Early on Ziya noticed that all the GBA members called each other by their first names, something they never did with him. Finally Ziya said he would much rather they call him Ziya Abi rather than Ziya Bey. Given his warm, generous and brotherly nature, Ziya Abi took hold in GBA and eventually in the entrepreneurial community in general. His generosity and altruism have left a lasting effect on TPF. We value his many contributions to our organization and promise to grow his great legacy by upholding the ideals and principles, by which he lived. His family, TPF and his friends are planning a program to ensure that Ziya’s legacy lives on.

EDUCATION Education creates opportunity. As Turkey grows economically, it is vital that its youth have the knowledge and skills necessary to lead that prosperity into the future. Since our founding, TPF has focused on ensuring that all Turkish youth have the opportunity to realize their potential.

GENDER EQUALITY Women and girls are a vital part of any community. TPF works to provide women and girls in Turkey access to every possibility that allows them to fulfill their potential.

AREAS FOR IMPACT

SOCIAL & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Turkish Philanthropy Funds uses strategic interventions to promote social and economic opportunity for the disadvantaged in both rural and urban areas and ensure they have the correct resources to sustain themselves.

DISASTER RELIEF Local NGOs are the first on the scene when disasters occur and they know best what assistance is needed and understand the complex political, social and cultural context of a disaster. TPF provides its donors with the most up to date information in an emergency and knows where funds are most needed.

EDUCATION Among the countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Turkey has one of the highest populations below the age of 15. Yet, they remain below the OECD average in reading, mathematics and science. Participation rates in early childhood education and care are also low compared to the OECD average. It is imperative that these young people need to complete their education to be well prepared for the labor force and further learning. There are various priorities that need to be addressed simultaneously:

Improving equality between regions as well as urban and rural areas Addressing the needs of disadvantaged students Training quality teachers and school leaders Improving access to and completion of both secondary and higher education; and Adequately funding the education system.

An Apple for the Teacher Training teachers is an integral part of improving the quality of education in Turkey. The number of illiterate citizens decreased to 2.8 million in 2012 from 4.9 million in 2008. The drop in illiteracy was a result of improved relations between teachers and students.

35% of 15–29 year olds in Turkey are neither employed nor in school – The OECD Average is 16%

Building and Improving Schools Providing a safe and secure learning environment is vital to achieving the educational goals of any community. When schools do not have enough books for students, are missing toilets, need elevators for their disabled, or are reaching their capacity, they are in desperate need of funding to help improve their environment. That is where TPF steps in. TPF partners with a number of organizations to help repair schools, build new classrooms, provide additional school supplies, and update their technology.

SCHOLARSHIPS A lack of income prevents a huge number of high school aged children from enrolling in school. Extending scholarships increases the likelihood that these adolescents will attend school. Turkey still has the highest proportion of young people neither employed nor in school or training among 15-29 year-olds across OECD countries: 35 percent compared with an OECD average of 16 percent. A Community Effort İMECE, community engagement and activism, dates back centuries in Anatolia. One of TPF’s partners, TOVAK, Turkey Community Service Foundation, has expanded upon this phenomenon and started a project that brings university students and villagers together. Students and villagers jointly repair and restore schools around the country. From installing toilets to building classrooms, or even just applying fresh paint, the community shares the task of turning rundown schools into sparkling exemplary learning centers.

The late Andre Dimitriadis

12

Andre Dimitriadis, who was born and raised in İstanbul, called TPF’s attention to this project that provides work for the local villagers, pride for the volunteer students, and renewed schools for students and teachers. The idea of bringing people within communities together to make improvements on their schools convinced Andre to donate to the project. He is the largest supporter of the initiative with a $100,000 grant made through TPF. Over the years, with TPF funding, TOVAK’s İMECE project has repaired 89 schools around the country, completing the latest school this past June of 2014. Andre passed away in August 2013 and was unable to see the latest repaired school, but the students who were the recipients of his generosity will remember him forever.

EDUCATION

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

Revealing Everyone’s Full Potential Since 1863, Darüşşafaka Society, one of Turkey’s oldest educational institutions, has worked to extend opportunities to disadvantaged children. They offer free primary and secondary education at their school. Ensuring that every child has access to an education is something that Ömer Selçukhan Ertur, an author, professor and retired UN worker – has turned his attention to in recent years. Given the number of worthy organizations dedicated to solving this challenge, he couldn’t decide which one he would support.

Ömer Ertur

After Ömer’s initial call and visit to Darüşşafaka, he knew he had hit upon the right organization. What Ömer admires most about Darüşşafaka is the opportunity that they provide to disadvantaged children who would have otherwise not reached to their full potential. “Sometimes I come across fantastic, sharp individuals that, unfortunately, were never given the chance to study and I just imagine what else they could have achieved with a formal education,” he said. Ömer collaborated with TPF to channel his gift from the United States to Darüşşafaka Society. His tax-deductible donation will be used to support Darüşşafaka graduates with scholarships to attend university. He hopes someday to help create a Darüşşafaka University.

Gender Equality Gender equality in Turkey is two steps forward and one step back. Women make up approximately 26 percent of the top executives. 12 percent of Turkish CEOs are women in comparison to 4 percent of Fortune 1,000 companies in the United States. Forty-three percent of all university students are women and 70 percent of female university graduates are employed. Yet, 10 percent of women are illiterate. This is something Turkish Philanthropy Funds is dedicated to changing. TPF is investing in education, and skill building to close the gender gap in Turkey.

She Decides In a country where women account for only ten percent of business managers, one percent of mayors and fourteen percent of Parliament members, teaching leadership skills is essential. An integral part of this process is providing women with role models. TPF’s partners fill in the gap. Through teaching leadership skills and assisting with job searches, TPF partners are guiding Turkish society’s young women to success and are increasing the labor force participation rate.

Let’s Educate our Girls Educating women and girls in Turkey raises lifetime incomes for them and their families.

27%

In 2013, Turkey’s gender gap was 120 out of 136 by the World Economic Forum. This number is reflected through many different factors, but particularly education. TPF is tackling major roadblocks that cause the gap and prevent Turkey’s female population from achieving their dreams. By providing access to education by means of scholarships and building schools and literacy centers, women and girls are given the chance to thrive in all areas of their lives.

of women aged 25–64 have earned the equivalent of a high-school degree

Through our partners, TPF has brightened the future and provided access to education to over 119 girls just within the past year. One hundred and thirty women and girls are becoming entrepreneurs through skills training. Who Made That? There are mothers, daughters and sisters we’ve met along our journey who are supporting their entire family on just a single salary. TPF supports projects where women are taught a life skill that will earn them an income, thus empowering them to become independent, confident breadwinners. From weaving kilims to sewing bags, women throughout Turkey are making major family decisions and learning how to manage their finances to become entrepreneurs. In terms of fostering entrepreneurship, Dell’s Gender Index ranked Turkey number 11 out of 17 countries throughout the globe, a country where only 33 percent of women actually have a bank account. TPF harnesses the drive of women in Turkey to achieve their potential by simply providing the train ing needed to succeed. In the city of Van alone, TPF has built two workshops and has employed over 130 women and girls, positively impacting over 1,000 family members.

Meet Şerİfe My name is Şerife. I am a 19-year-old working mother of two beautiful children. TPF has helped me become the mother I want to be through its financial aid. For the past two years, I’ve taken advantage of an amazing opportunity to learn the trade of kilim weaving. Each day, I arrive at the workshop ready to create beautiful works of art for clients around the world. With the other girls in the work shop, we share stories, cook, and form lifelong friendships. A large portion of our day is dedicated to our schooling and learning to read and write. I’ve never attended a school, but now I am completely literate.

The ability to support your family, which in my case includes extended family, is an amazing feeling. I stride through life with a sense of purpose, feeling independent. I no longer have to ask my husband for money to buy clothes for my baby or anything else. Each kilim I weave and each lesson I learn is for my newborn daughter, and women and girls all over Turkey, who don’t have the same opportunities. Funding from TPF is essential to grow the kilim weaving workshops that are run by HADD, Hisar Anatolian Support Society. Within three years, TPF has given HADD $80,500 – enough to build and operate two workshops and reach hundreds of girls and impact all of their families.

GENDER EQUALITY

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

In His Memory “Dad always supported girls and women in every way and especially in education,” recounted Özgür Karaosmanoğlu, son of Attila Karaosmanoğlu, who passed away in November of 2013. Right away, friends in the United States immedi ately began asking where they could donate in his name. The family had already setup funds in Turkey with various organizations, but needed a way for people in the United States and around the world to pay their respects through a donation.

The late Mr. Karaosmanoğlu was a top economist with the World Bank whose daily work involved gender equality and development. Girls’ education in Turkey was his top priority, so when it came to choosing the organization that would receive the funds raised, ÇYDD, The Association for Supporting Contemporary Life, was an easy choice. The part of the process that stood out was when he received a letter stating the name of the girl that received the scholar ship as well as a little background on her. “Knowing that TPF has already vetted these organizations makes the process stress-free.”

Özgür thought of TPF in hopes that the process could be made simpler. “Everything was done so quickly, so efficiently and in such a great way. The Attila Karaosmanoğlu Memorial Fund was online and running within one day.”

Social and Economic Development Sixteen percent of the Turkish population lives below the poverty line. While the income derived from farming is not sufficient for the rural population, citizens who migrated from rural areas also lack the financial and social capital to successfully adjust to urban life. Turkish Philanthropy Funds focuses on strategic interventions to improve the quality of economic and social opportunities currently available to ensure that the economically disadvantaged both in rural and urban areas have adequate resources to sustain themselves. Improving Healthcare in Turkey As the OECD country with the third highest income inequality, Turkey faces the problem of catering to all of its citizens equally. Access to quality and specialized healthcare for those with the lowest income in the most remote villages and in shantytowns remains an issue. Many cannot afford transportation to hospitals in big cities to receive care that is needed. In terms of health indicators, Turkey performs significantly worse when compared to the OECD, finishing 25th out of 34 countries. This echoes the fact that per capita spending on healthcare remains low in the country by international standards. According to the OECD, the United States led the developed world in 2012, spending $8,745 per capita on health care. Turkey, by contrast, spent just $984 per capita, the lowest among developed countries. Improving the health of the workforce is a priority in improving Turkey’s overall competitiveness. TPF works with NGOs on the ground in Turkey to fill this gap; an example of this can be seen through the work that is done for children with leukemia – ensuring that children from families with low income that suffer from this horrible cancer get the care they need while also getting an education from classes specifically designed for them – providing free special education. Strengthening Communities Lifting communities out of poverty has been a centuries-old struggle that societies have tried to solve. Over the past several years, it has become apparent that the best way to advance lives is through empowerment. This is what partners of TPF are doing. One of these issues lies within seasonal migrant workers. Children migrating with their families each year are forced to work under harsh conditions and give up any option of educa tion. This interruption imprisons them in a “cycle of poverty,” ensuring that they will share the same future as their parents.

She accepts each stage of chemotherapy with curiosity and confusion.

Her father is a Turkish laborer receiving minimum wage. He cannot afford the daily travel expenses involved in bringing her to large, urban cities for care. He brought Tuana to LOSEV’s hospital, but was forced to return to his hometown to be with his other children. Tuana’s treatment will take approximately three years. We Wholeheartedly Trust TPF Elif and Dr. Tamer Seçkin are an exemplary couple among resourceful Turkish-American philanthropists. Founder of the Endometriosis Foundation of America with Padma Lakshmi, Dr. Seçkin has been diligently working to bring change among the health sector for years. The Seçkins are at the helm of their own Foundation, but when it comes to giving back to Turkey, the Seçkins trust TPF. “Prior to the creation of TPF, there were no ways for Turkish diaspora to organize towards a good cause. We had no culture of an organized way of giving. Turkish Philanthropy Funds is truly an original, well-thought foundation,” stated Dr. Seçkin.

“TPF has created a reception of like-minded who gather simply for the good of Turkey. We stand behind Haldun [Tashman’s] vision and his gifted, generous personality,” expressed Dr. Seçkin.

The couple joined TPF’s Founder’s Society in 2010, reiterating their commitment to philanthropy in Turkey. Over the years, they have chosen to give to a variety of projects, touching upon all of TPF’s cause areas.

To create big impact, it takes a big vision. For Elif and Dr. Tamer Seçkin’s grand vision of development in Turkey, they choose TPF due to results, transparency and effectiveness.

In the future, Elif and Dr. Tamer Seçkin hope to support more projects on women’s empowerment, referring specifically to combatting domestic violence and increasing the percentage of literate girls and women. The Seçkins are also excited to involve their children in TPF’s Young Professionals group and hope to help increase the involvement of our community’s youth into the world of philanthropy.

Disaster Relief On May 13, 2014, an explosion tore through a coal mine in Soma, Turkey, as more than seven hundred workers prepared for a shift change. The subsequent fire cut off electricity to the mine, trapping hundreds of miners about a mile beneath the surface. The death toll from smoke inhalation was staggering, reaching 301 casualties. As soon as news of the explosion hit, Turkish Philanthropy Funds reacted and formed the Soma Disaster Relief Fund, to aid in various stages of recovery, rebuilding and resilience. Our donors reacted as well. TPF has raised over $130,000 and 100 percent of the proceeds will be granted to partner organizations. TPF’s priority in Soma is to provide support on the following areas: 1 Education: TPF wants to prioritize providing financial support to the children of miners who have lost their lives. However, we also understand that the funds raised for scholarships have surpassed the need so we will work with organizations that also provide educa- tion on mine security, decreasing the probability of accidents and first-aid to miners; and organizations that provide skill enhancing workshops to women who have to become breadwinners of their families. 2 Psycho-social support: Even though the town of Soma has been singled out after the disaster, the casualties were from more than 15 neighboring towns and villages. TPF is interested in supporting projects that can provide psycho-social support to people impacted in those other towns as well. 3 Diversifying income generation: TPF is interested in supporting organizations that can provide new avenues for revenue generation and increase opportunities for employment in sectors other than mining. These might include projects to develop agriculture in the area or establishing workshops or co-operatives to train women and create new income opportunities.

Turkish-American Organizations Unite TPF was able to raise more than $130,000 since the disaster to aid in the relief efforts. None of this would have been made possible if it wasn’t for the coordination of many Turkish-American organizations around the country. From the Moon and Stars Project of the American Turkish Society donating the proceeds from the opening night of the New York Turkish Film Festival, to ATA-DC hosting an event, to a group of Peace Corp volunteers, Arkadaşlar, making a stellar effort, to highlighting the Soma Disaster Relief Project in an article, every bit of effort helped. Some TurkishAmericans, some not, all felt connected enough to Turkey to unite after the disaster and raise funds. Creating a streamlined effort is essential to efficiently addressing a disaster. When emergency strikes, time is crucial. TPF would like to thank all organizations that campaigned to raise funds for Soma and trusted TPF in the grant making process. Donor advised fund spotlight DONOR SPOTLIGHT

smart investments The latest addition to TPF’s Donor Advised Funds (DAF), was opened by Microsoft employee, Alp Önalan. A signature product of Turkish Philanthropy Funds, a DAF enables the donor to support multiple organizations and programs through out the year, with TPF’s staff ready to help to identify grant recipients, ensure charitable status and provide administrative support. Alp began donating to TPF through his employer’s matching gift program. After consulting with Turkish Philanthropy Funds, he realized that he can use his company’s matching gift program more efficiently by opening a DAF. TPF’s requirement to start a fund is $5,000. Alp states that after opening a DAF “I put more thought into my contributions and I am more strategic about it [giving] in general.” DAFs are a no-hassle option for those who are eager to get involved in philanthropy but don’t want the logistical burden. A major added benefit to the donor are the tax deductions, which TPF helps facilitate.

Alp Önalan

Alp Önalan

Since opening his DAF, Alp has chosen to give towards a multitude of areas, with a focus on education, which truly stands out to him as an important issue. “It usually takes one educated person from one family to make the difference for his/her people,” he states, referring to supporting education through TPF. At any given time, TPF has over 50 projects live on their website (www.tpfund.org). For DAF holders, donating to any one of these projects is an easy one-step process. Additionally, DAF holders can choose to support projects run by organizations with which TPF does not partner. Whether your choice is a US-based organization or an NGO in Turkey, TPF’S DAF structure can facilitate your transaction. Mr. Önalan stated “Over the years, I have learned more about TPF and was so motivated and inspired by the people who have started it all. I think you are all doing such great work and we [DAF holders] are trying just to be part of this journey.” To receive more details about opening a Donor Advised Fund, please contact TPF. It will be our pleasure to walk you through the process.

ways to give later Charitable Bequests A bequest in your will or trust can direct specific assets or a percentage of your estate to a fund or to add to an existing fund. You can reduce your taxable estate and create a charitable legacy.

Charitable Remainder Trusts You can transfer cash or assets (especially appreciated assets) to an irrevocable trust and may receive income for life or, if you chose, a certain term of years. The remainder passes to TPF, creating a permanent fund in your name.

Charitable Lead Trusts You can set up a trust that generates dividends. Throughout the term of the trust, earned dividends go to TPF. Remaining assets go to your heirs, tax-free, on the trust’s appreciation.
