Newstag May to November Coverage 2015

Page 1

Conducted and compiled by tpr media consultants May - November 2015

Overview From May to December 2015, tpr media secured a wide range of press coverage for Newstag. This included news stories about new partnerships and awards, as well as two positioning features. The first feature, which ran on Journalism.co.uk, portrayed Newstag as innovative company to watch, providing a new model for hyperpersonalised video news. The second, which ran in the Cannes Lions Daily News and was distributed at one of the world's premier advertising trade events, described Newstag as one of the key companies challenging existing models for advertising and content sharing. tpr media organised a number of meetings between Henrik Eklund and prospective partners at the end of April. Sophie Toumazis accompanied Newstag to a series of meetings with content providers (e.g. ITN and Press Association), as well as NGOS (e.g. DEC and Médecins Sans Frontières). In October 2015, Newstag won the prestigious ‘Best Startup’ award at the TVB Europe Awards, hosted by respected industry publication TVB Europe. The initial interest arose following a press release issued by tpr media earlier in the year. Following this achievement, the tpr media team met with Henrik and Camilla at The Hospital Club for a full briefing about Newstag’s shifting direction and outlined key storylines to be developed in the run up to the launch of the platform. Later in the year, Newstag’s selection as a finalist for the 2015 WANIFRA awards provided an opportunity to remind UK press about the platform’s recent achievements and developments and to explore angles and opportunities. Through this process, tpr media researched the latest journalism and contacted over 50 high-level technology press and media contacts to arrange face-to-face conversations in London with Henrik Eklund. These included both consumer and trade journalists (please find the full list on the final page of this report) and resulted in a meeting with freelancer Stephen Armstrong, who is considering pitching pieces to both Wired and Monocle magazines closer to Newstag’s launch.

Newstag: A new model for 'hyperpersonalised' video The new mobile first platform lets users curate their own news video channels and donate to causes Posted: 25 August 2015 By: Mădălina Ciobanu Comments

"I think the media industry was disrupted 15 to 20 years ago and while consumption and volume are going through the roof, the sustainable model is falling apart," believes Henrik Eklund, cofounder and chief executive of Newstag. That's what he is hoping to change by developing a mobilefirst video platform that brings together news organisations, NGOs and brands. Newstag launched in June and it's currently still in beta, letting users create a personalised news channel through what it calls 'tag streams' or topics of interest, region or language. Since launch, the site has been accessed in more than 200 countries, gathering nine million views in its first month of going public. Sixty per cent of the platform's users are under 34 and 77 per cent access it on their mobile devices.

Things are cheaper, faster or lighter, but there is no model for creating something that actually pays for journalism Henrik Eklund, Newstag

For now, only 12 news outlets have signed up, including AP, Russia Today and Reuters, but Eklund said the aim is to "have one from every region and, hopefully, from every country in the world". "You will have a news channel that will update 24/7 with sources from all over the world about your topics, which basically means you get, let's say, a CNN, but it's your own."

Date: 25Aug2015 Reach: 1776 Value: 121 He argued the media is mostly focused on adapting to new technologies, but "there is no model for creating something that actually pays for journalism". "Two hundred hours of video are uploaded every minute on YouTube, and at the same time, nobody is getting paid and the journalists who are really needed to make sense of all this are actually getting pushed out of the model. "Even though there's so much more – and you could get so many more angles and better understanding – you get less," he told Journalism.co.uk.

Screenshot showing how users can create tag streams on Newstag Newstag uses a redistribution model it calls 'power' to let users donate five per cent of its revenue to specific causes and organisations, such as Oxfam, Red Cross and the United Nations World Food Programme, dependent on how regularly they use the site. The revenue comes from brands Newstag has signed up, who can sponsor one or more tag streams created by users. Eklund said this allows brands to "meet [consumers] in a new relationship", as they can also donate money to the same causes supported by the users. The only editorial involvement the team has is tagging the video footage as it comes in and ensuring the tags are accurate. "You have professional journalists telling their story and they can be associated with a type of value without the brands being the ones producing the content," Eklund explained. As people are currently visiting Newstag using their mobile browsers – what the platform was intended for – a mobile app is also in the cards. Eklund also said data consumption is an aspect to be considered, in order to make the platform accessible even to users with smaller data packages. "We will work closely with mobile operators and we could have packages to deliver our content and in that delivery process, we could actually pay for the data so it doesn't cost the user any data to access Newstag," said Eklund.

Newstag partners with the United Nations World Food Programme for news that goes beyond the headlines www.geektime.com /2015/06/25/newstag-partners-with-the-united-nations-world-food-programme-for/news-that-goes-beyond-the-headlines

Photo Credit: PR This Swedish startup wants to turn passive content consumers into active curators who have a real impact on the news. Hopefully this coupled with its latest partnership could expose people to news that gets ignored by mainstream media Newstag, the Swedish startup that aims to give content consumers a more active role in selecting the video news we’re exposed to, has partnered with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). This partnership will help raise awareness and highlight issues that are often ignored by mainstream media. It will also give the NGO access to an alternative fundraising channel by enabling viewers to support WFP .causes through the Newstag site

Using media to make a real-world impact The idea is to use media to make a real-world impact by giving organizations like WFP a platform to shed light on stories that get no or little attention from traditional media. Why, for example, do we hear so little about Boko Haram and its impact on African communities? Newstag hopes that through collaborations with organizations like WFP, it can shift the media’s agenda and change the kind of content people consume. In addition to WFP, Newstag has signed partnerships with Earth Hour, Birdlife, Lien AID, .Singapore Cancer Society, Flora Fauna, and others

What differentiates Newstag from other media sources is that it aims to turn passive content consumers into pro-active curators of the news. Viewers can tag content and also have the option to create and distribute tag streams or news channels with handpicked content. This has an impact on the content other Newstag users are exposed to as the “Watched right now” and “Top news in English” feeds, for example, are determined by users. But beyond Newstag, this can help expose other people to content they might .not ordinarily be exposed to through social media

Newstag users also have the opportunity to allocate funds to any of the organizations and NGOs Newstag has partnered with such as WFP. The more active a user is in consuming and sharing content, the more points they have to vote for an organization. Newstag will then donate a portion of their revenues to the .organizations based on the number of votes they get Interestingly, Newstag’s business model is based on what they call “contextual digital branding,” which gives NGOs the opportunity to be featured alongside content that represents their cause. They’re also exploring enabling viewers to donate to charities in the context of content viewed. A good example of this would be having the option to donate to charities operating in Nepal after viewing video news about the .Nepalese earthquake

?What kind of impact will Newstag have Since the startup publicly launched in March 2015, it has grown rapidly. On average they publish about 350 videos daily from a range of sources including NGOs and news sources like Reuters, AFP, Bloomberg, CNN, SNTV and TechStorm. There are also about 20,000 weekly active users viewing and sharing content from the site. The startup has big plans for the near future, which include both a mobile and TV app, and is looking to raise a new round of funding in part to support these efforts. So far, the startup has raised $1.5 million in seed funding from a combination of private investors, the founders and

.VCs, and was awarded a Swedish innovation grant for $150,000 While this may be impressive, it will take users some time to adapt to the idea. In trying to foster a culture of active content curators, they’re changing something fundamental about the way media has always worked. Henrik Eklund, Newstag CEO, explained, “We see Newstag as a complement to traditional media ”. – we want to help bring perspectives, relevance and sustainability to the crippled media model Victor Alexiev, Newstag co-founder, reiterated this point. “We hope that we open the door for a more valuenetwork-based business model thinking, as well as more concern around the impact of popularity-based

news reporting. We are not going after traditional models – we see an open space in video news, and we want to claim it.” Alexiev went on to say that they see themselves as the Spotify for video news with a strong emphasis on the social impact component. It will be interesting to see whether or not users take to .the platform in the long run :Share on Nicole Hyman

The multi-level agreement allows the initiative to fundraise through the Stockholm-based video news service. Newstag's approach to the distribution and consumption of news brings together video news stories from professional content producers around the world, including AP, AFP and Reuters, as well as top brands. By rebalancing the traditional relationships between industry stakeholders, Newstag aims to make journalism sustainable through a proper funding stream. The 'mobile-first' service enables users to create their own 'tagstream' (or personalised TV channel) in seconds, organising, consuming and sharing the stories they care about among their social networks using the latest web and mobile technologies. The variety of stories from trusted sources ranges from entertainment to current affairs. These stories are available from a number of different perspectives, putting users at the heart of the experience and in complete control. The result is a platform that allows converging viewpoints to be presented side by side, creating contrasting frames of reference. Alongside this, Newstag also offers users an opportunity to make a difference. Consumers can take action by supporting causes and research they think are important. A part of Newstag's revenues are available for users to allocate to charitable, NGO and NPO partners, such as WFP. The more they watch and share, the higher their impact. In addition, charities, NGOs and agencies joining this new media model will also be able to provide video news

content to users on international initiatives, using the platform both to fundraise and communicate. WFP Head of Television Communications, Jonathan Dumont, says: "The United Nations World Food Programme has an obligation to inform the public about what we are doing to help make this world a Zero Hunger world. As the UN's frontline emergency relief organisation we have an inherent relationship with news organisations by providing content and information that helps them tell the humanitarian side of the story. Working with outlets like Newstag takes the relationship one step further by providing an opportunity for information providers and consumers to give back. That can make a world of difference to those who need help the most." Newstag Chairman and Founder, Camilla Dahlin-Andersson, added: "This link with The United Nations World Food Programme goes to the heart of Newstag's new media model – creating value while enabling charities, NGOs and international agencies to tell their story. This multi-faceted relationship will transform the role of users by providing them with a unique opportunity to have real impact on the world around them." www.newstag.com (JP)

Sweden’s Newstag selected as a top international start up by Mobile World Capital Barcelona

Stockholmbased Newstag, a mobilefirst video news service, has been selected as one of 15 top start ups in an international contest to recognise the most innovative use of mobile technology in business.

The entrepreneurial ventures were picked during this year’s GSMA Mobile World Congress by Mobile World Capital Barcelona, the notforprofit foundation established to promote the latest mobile technology globally. The selection criteria included a high level of innovation, potential for growth and global positioning and economic or social impact.

The award forms part of Mobile World Capital Barcelona’s programme of entrepreneurship designed to promote international innovation in the mobile ecosystem, called 4 Years From Now (4YFN).

The business platform, established to help start ups grow, is focused on building ideas and forging lasting relationships for international start ups, investors and corporations. The highlight of the programme is a 4YFN event devoted to innovation in the mobile ecosystem.

Alongside the other finalists, Newstag will be joining the 4YFN delegation to exhibit at DLD Tel Aviv this September. At the three day conference Newstag will take part in the programme designed to showcase its platform to the tech entrepreneurship community.

Other finalist include: Adele Robots, which works to find out how robots can be integrated into society; Navigine, a navigation company; The Social Coin that helps to promote acts of kindness through local actions that increase building human interaction and motivate social change; DWave, helping companies to benefit from the opportunities created by the use of safe and effective digital technologies; Galf, a golfing app; Softmogul, aiming to make accommodation easy; and onebip, a global mobile payment service.

Said Camilla DahlinAndersson, Newstag founder and chairman: “We are delighted that our new platform for creating and sharing video news content has been recognised with this award. It’s a huge endorsement and a great honour to be selected as one of the most innovative companies using mobile technology by the world’s largest mobile organisation.”

Newstag’s pioneering approach to the distribution and consumption of news brings together video news stories from professional content producers around the world, including AP, AFP and Reuters, as well as top brands. By radically rebalancing the traditional relationships between industry stakeholders, Newstag aims to make journalism sustainable through a proper funding stream.

Newstag launched a public beta version of the platform in midJune 2015 and has grown rapidly since, now reaching a global audience of users in more than 200 countries consuming nearly two million streams per week.

Commented Victor Alexiev, director of research and development and cofounder at Newstag: “At this important point in Newstag’s development we’re very excited to be joining 4YFN in Tel Aviv as it’ll be a great opportunity to meet and learn from fellow entrepreneurs and potential investors.”

The Newstag service enables users to create their own ‘tagstream’, a personalised TV channel, in seconds, organising, consuming and sharing the stories that they care about among their social networks using the latest web and mobile technologies. The wide variety of stories from trusted sources ranges from entertainment to current affairs.

These stories are available from a number of different perspectives, putting users at the heart of the experience and in complete control. The result is a platform that allows converging viewpoints to be presented side by side, creating contrasting frames of reference.

The shortlisted nominations for this year’s TVBAwards have been announced today, with some of the leading programmes and projects from the last 12 months prominent across the revamped categories. Coverage of the Tour de France, BBC Proms, and the UK General Election are some of the featured broadcasts to have made the shortlist, alongside less renowned projects such as the award winning short, Knit me Some Happiness, which tested the use of drone capture to new vertical limits.

This year’s new categories covering infrastructure and TVBEverywhere have been extremely well represented, with recent achievements in asset management, archive digitisation, and social media integration being recognised alongside the more publicly visible broadcast nominations. “I think it’s that blend of honouring frontline programming in tandem with the infrastructure that makes it happen, that gives the TVBAwards its unique edge,” explained James McKeown, TVBEurope’s executive editor. “We’ve been swamped with nominations this year, and I’m really glad to see some interesting, deserving projects being put forward. Seeing shorts like Knit me Some Happiness alongside more mainstream entries is what it’s all about, and we’re seeing that sort of variety throughout our categories.” This year’s ceremony takes place at London’s Bloomsbury Ballroom on Thursday, 22 October, and tickets are now available from the TVBAwards website. TVBEurope will be highlighting each nomination via a series of feature articles between now and October on the TVBEurope website. The TVBAwards are taking place tomorrow in central London and there is still a chance to get tickets to the event, which celebrates success across the broadcast industry. The award is a new addition to the event this year, and unlike the other accolades which recognise success over the past 12 month, the award has a scope of three years to ensure inclusivity for recently founded companies. The winner will be announced tomorrow evening, at a black tie ceremony at the Bloomsbury Ballroom. In the running for the Startup/Entrepreneur award is Newstag, an online network based on news videos from trusted sources. Newstag currently has offices in Stockholm Sweden, Cairo Egypt and Singapore, and plans to expand its global footprint further. Newstag enables users to create real social impact and influence the global news agenda, and the company distributes five per cent of its revenue to NGOs. Users can influence how the company’s revenues are allocated, with every view and every share creating value. The free service allows the user to create their own personalised channel and make a difference through the consumption of news content. Also nominated for the award is One World Television. The brand bills itself as a refreshing and positive light entertainment channel, which aims to provide a ‘harmony in the home’ for those who prefer entertainment that is not focused on violence and crime. Vigour Video has received a nomination for its multiscreen solution. The company aims to revolutionise content consumption across all screens using a concept its call ‘contextual multiscreen’. Its platform connects all devices users already have and treats multiple screens as a single canvas. Its specialised technology and white label platform integrates contextual experiences into the core of the video services of its customers. The first commercial implementation of Vigour Video, MTV PLAY, was launched on 5 March 2015 with launch partner Viacom. After working together for a number of years and becoming increasingly frustrated by the barriers imposed by a large company, James Burt and Camilla Young decided to create Vualto, the last finalist for the Startup/Entrepreneur award. Vualto has evolved its offerings into three main products/services: provision of multivendor DRM (vudrm); build and integration of content delivery workflows (vuworkflow); and the provision of players and apps to consume the content (vuplay). Over the last three years, the company has grown its revenue year on year with 2014/2015 bringing in a revenue of £1.2 million. The team has also expanded from just two, to 16. Tickets for the TVBAwards are available via the event website and include a drinks reception, three course dinner, entertainment and the awards presentation ceremony, and an after party. www.tvbawards.com

The multi-year deal grants Newstag the right to share and distribute CNBC’s news videos on its mobile and online platforms alongside current affairs and entertainment content from other professional content producers around the world, including AP, AFP and Reuters. CNBCAfrica.com Chief Executive, Sid Wahi said: “Newstag is to professional video news what YouTube is to amateur video clips. CNBC Africa is the largest and most credible source of business content from around the continent with over 35,000 videos, interviews and clips available through its digital publishing channels. This partnership will extend our current reach and enhance our digital ecosystem.” Newstag’s ‘mobile-first’ service enables users to create their own ‘tagstream’ (or personalised TV channel) in seconds, organising, consuming and sharing stories among their social networks using the latest web and mobile technologies. Newstag CEO, Henrik Eklund, says: “Newstag is committed to providing global news coverage from truly distinct perspectives and we’re delighted that CNBC Africa has partnered with us to offer our users a refreshing insight into African news through an African lens. It’s a dynamic time for Africa and in less than a decade CNBC Africa has built a solid international reputation for providing credible and impartial news, presenting an exciting picture of a continent in development from nuanced reporting on the ground. We hope that combining these strengths with Newstag’s innovative news model will amplify Africa’s voice, allowing it to reach a large international audience.” Launched on 1 June 2007, CNBC Africa celebrates its 8th anniversary as Africa’s first and only real-time Pan Africa financial and business news network. In response to developing news, consumers can take direct action by supporting relevant causes and research since a part of Newstag’s revenues are available for users to allocate to charitable, NGO and NPO partners, including as WFP, the Red Cross and Oxfam. In recent months Newstag has rapidly expanded its network of commercial and content partners as it gears up to launch. Last month the platform, which is currently in public beta, announced that it will bepartnering with CNBC Africa – the pan-African financial and business news channel – on a multi-year deal granting Newstag the right to share and distribute CNBC’s news videos. www.newstag.com
