Tracy Tse Selected Work 2017

The following collection of work auspiciously channels playful explorations into critical designs. It is in a constant search for refinement. My preoccupation with the impact of design in public/ private settings has lead me to your work at Cumulus. Subsequently, I am currently seeking to further my skills in design through sound architectural practice. Hence, I am looking for the opportunity to be part of a holistic architectural firm. I am confident in my abilities to add to this firm’s environment - its social network, work processes, and digital toolsets. Sincerely, Tracy Tse

Program: Master plan to reconfigure Århus in anticipation of rising sea levels Site details: Århus, DK Size: 6 km2 Supervisor: CJ Lim

This thesis is an attempt to seek opportunities in the advent of rising sea levels through an alternative reaction that propagates self-reliance, sustainability, and confidence. The project intends to be both a critique and a demonstration on a culture of anxiety through exaggeration and over preparedness.

O N The premises of the project is based two conditions.

S T A N D B Y -

First, nature surviving humankind implores an acceptance rather than a constant taming and control. The design proposition investigates an alternate configuration of Aarhus over the concerns of rising sea levels. Second, we live in a society based on continual scientific predictions of disasters that redefine and perpetuate risks. The paradox of knowing more leading to a more ‘informed’ society ultimately shapes one that has more problems to confront. A situation that is meant to create a circular ecology but resulting in a mode of excess. The reconfiguration will utilize heterotopia as a device to critique how we deal with being at risk within the flood zone of Aarhus and anticipate different measures of preparation and self-sufficiency for the entire city to reassure and boost confidence to its inhabitants. In turn, the unexpected result of an excessive protection and preparation scheme will illustrate a long-term sustainable and resilient strategy for the city of Aarhus.

Program: Urban habitation transformation Site details: 1882 hospital campus in Århus, DK Size: 1400 m2 Supervisor: Joel Letkemann, Kätte Bønløkke

“The cyborg is our ontology; it gives us our politics. The cyborg is a condensed image of both imagination and material reality, the two joined centers structuring any possibility of historical transformation.” - Donna Haraway, A Cyborg Manifesto The transformation of the main hospital established in 1882 to become a place for habitation investigates the tensions between heritage and new fragments. The existing underground network between other buildings in the campus became a platform to program spaces of gathering/meeting for its inhabitants in a semi-public manner. As a result, the focus of the transformation carefully chooses to preserve the existing structure and exterior brick cladding while infilling/removing into the ground floor to create a courtyard situation. The infill marks traces of the removed while playfully inserts itself as curved bay windows to interact with the courtyard and the underground. The result of new vs old aims to acknowledge the prestige of its past while leaving space for new infills and fragments to occur.

Program: Mixed-use tower (retail, office, casino, hotel, habitation) Site details: Situated within a ‘Highway Eddy’, Kanata, ON Size: 54 storeys, Supervisor: Tom Dubicanic

The tower explores the assembly of vertical programming in relation to its spacial multiplicity. Its condition implores complex continuity of vertical occupation as opposed to uniform singularity. The inspiration of the structure is the coral reef in which individual coral polyps exhibit different levels of sophistication which aggregates into a super-organism. The tower attempts to utilize the sun and wind as contributors toward the manisfestation of the structure.

Program: Exterior Addition, Garage, Interior Renovations; Site details: House Situated in a Suburban Setting Ottawa, ON, Canada Size: 139 m2 Supervisor: Titania Truesdale

The Student’s Design Clinic is an umbrella organization that facilitate relationships between designers to clients for residential projects ranging from simple lanscaping projects to custom-built homes. The Muttu Residence had various limitations on the budget as the clients were interested in changing their current house into one that more suited their daily lifestyle. A balance between a fully functional kitchen, a place to entertain guests, and a proper front entrance were major concerns of the clients.

Program: Museum for Photography and Architecture (separate buildings) Site details: Varosliget City Park Budapest, HU Supervisor: Alessandra Cianchetta

This project is an architecture competition in Budapest under the guidance and supervision of the Parisian ‘Office For Territorial Reconfiguration’ - AWP. As part of a team of four, I took part in all phases of the competition from conceptual brainstorming, to designing, and finally to submission drawings.

W U N D E R S C H Ö N P E P L U M -

The design situates itself as a ‘gate’ to a large city park full of other cultural institutions and amenities. The theme of ‘positive  versus negative’ acts as the starting point of a potential dialogue within each building, but also towards each other.

Program: FSC furniture competition Supervisor: Joel Letkemann

Studio MAD focused many workshops that allow for prototyping at a 1:1 scale and encourages the use of digital tools such as Grasshopper, CNC, and 3D printing. The following two projects demonstrates the use of these tools coupled with analog processes to reach its completion. The FSC furniture competition explores the possibilities of wood joineries through manual and digital ways. This piece intends to be set by the entrance/vestibule as a module for quick storage. The sliding top piece is CNC’ed along with the pen tray within. The pivoting drawer is inspired by old sewing tool boxes that reveal its contents through pivoting connections.

Program: Bronze lamp casting workshop Supervisor: Joel Letkemann

aaa mad studio

The bronze lamp casting workshop expores a gyroid geometry that has been cut with a ellipsoid. Its development from digital means (Rhino and Grasshopper) into a physical entity produces interesting and unexpected outcomes that teaches different leavels of tolerance in materials. The process of the bronze cast involved 3D printing the actual object that is then cast into a mold for the bronze to flow into. The result of the cast, although not perfect, is embraced for its unexpected and erroneous beauty.
