An Insider’s Guide

TO THE CITY THAT SHINES

By Ashlyn George

A bit about Ashlyn With opportunities like flying in military jets with the Royal Canadian Air Force to driving her own dog sled team, Ashlyn George is not your average world traveller. Unquenchable cravings for adrenaline and spontaneity have carried her through more than 55 countries on all 7 continents – all before the age of 30. A former Saskatchewanderer, she takes great pride in her prairie roots. When not on the road and writing about her global explorations on her website The Lost Girl’s Guide to Finding the World, you can find her seeking out local adventures in her home province of Saskatchewan.

S

tretching across the land of living skies on the curving banks of the South Saskatchewan River and rooted in the landscapes of rolling grain fields is my home: Saskatoon. Despite the large amount of time I spend on the road as a travel writer, I can’t help but always come back here – for both relaxation and exploration. I’m fortunate to have travelled through more than 55 countries and all seven continents. I also spent an entire year as the Saskatchewanderer, the province of Saskatchewan’s official travel blogger. During that time, I explored interesting and unique destinations and learned the value of being a tourist in my own home town.

There are just as many authentic and budget-friendly experiences to have in Saskatoon as there are around the world. The best part is everything is less than a twentyminute walk, bike ride or drive away. Supporting local businesses and artists who are often your neighbours is also another great benefit. These are my favourite events and activities as well as the best hidden gems to experience in the Paris of the Prairies.

History Go back in time at the Western Development Museum (WDM) I grew up on a grain farm but have adapted to the amenities of the urban world for the last decade. This is why I like to get back to my roots by exploring the Western Development Museum. Coincidentally, it’s just larger than a quarter section of land at 165 acres. The four branches of the museum house more than 75,000 artifacts and make it the largest farm machinery collection in Canada. It’s a true testament to the agriculture heritage of the Saskatchewan people. During the Christmas season – my favourite time of year - the WDM celebrates the holidays with the Festival of Trees. It’s a week-long community event with dozens of decorated Christmas trees, gingerbread houses and local entertainment.

Dig up Ancient History at Wanuskewin Heritage Park Artifacts hidden in the soil layers at Wanuskewin Heritage Park are twice as old as the pyramids of Giza. I had no idea there was more than 6000 years of history only a short bike ride north along the Meewasin Valley Trails. u YOUR GUIDE TO DISCOVERING EXPLOREYXE SASKATOON | 9 8

Pickup a growler of locally brewed Moosetracks hazelnut espresso stout at Prairie Sun Brewery. t An archaeological dig site since 1982, it’s been important in uncovering the stories and ways of life of the indigenous peoples of the Northern Plains. A National Historic Site, and home to the world’s most northern medicine wheel, the park highlights the rich cultures that are such an important part of Saskatchewan’s history.

Ride the Prairie Lily along the South Saskatchewan Excited to hop on board the 120 passenger Prairie Lily riverboat, it was a new way for me to explore between the shores of the South Saskatchewan River. I expected a tour of riverbank scenery and my favorite local landmarks like the Delta Bessborough Hotel. I was surprised to learn about the greatest nautical disaster to occur within the province. In 1908, luxury paddle steamer the SS City of Medicine Hat sunk after crashing into the southern pier of the Traffic Bridge. Used for pleasure cruises and shipping, the steamer was designed by Scottish nobleman Captain Ross. Unfortunately, the Captain was unable to steer the ship when telegraph wires hidden beneath high water levels tangled in the ship’s rudder. Thankfully everyone was unharmed and the unfortunate event makes for an exciting story today.

Festivals SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival Picture multiple free music stages (plus the main stage) and an outdoor beer garden set against the backdrop of the river. When the Jazz Festival is on, it really means it’s summertime in the Bridge City. It’s also a festival I attend every year with my family. We like to grab a meal to-go, set a blanket out on the grass and enjoy the music and atmosphere. My favourite genre? Bluegrass.

PotashCorp Fringe Theatre Festival I celebrate summer every August by biking down to the Fringe, Saskatoon’s best summer street festival. It’s ten days of indoor theatre, rows of food trucks and buskers entertaining crowds along Broadway Avenue. I make sure to go early to check out the craft vendors and local artists. My favourite part is catching the live theatre performances which play throughout the week. It’s always hard to decide as there are more than 30 shows to choose from.

Saskatoon's Local Treasures Swingin’ on the Saskatchewan with Saskatoon Lindy Hop Every Tuesday evening throughout the summer months, pairs of dancers can be found swing dancing at the River Landing Amphitheatre. The Saskatoon Lindy Hop is a non-profit organization that loves to promote vintage style swing and jazz music. People of all ages and abilities are welcome to join in – no partner necessary. (If new to swing, go early as volunteers teach basic steps). If not a dancer, I think it’s equally fun to watch while enjoying the 1920s and 1930s era music.

University of Saskatchewan Sculpture Garden The open-air sculpture garden beside the Diefenbaker Centre on the University of Saskatchewan campus is truly a hidden gem. Founded in 1993, pieces were designed by both local and international artists. My favourite, the oversized concrete hand with curled fingers so large you can crawl between, is both eye catching and interactive. It’s also close to the river and a great location to catch the sunset.

Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink at PotashCorp Plaza The outdoor skating rink along the river’s edge in Kiwanis Park is a classic winter spot for locals. But it’s one not many visitors know about. I love grabbing a hot chocolate with friends while having fun practising my skating skills. (Despite being Canadian, I’m not a very good skater!) There are several skating parties to enjoy throughout the snowy season but the best part is that use of skates is free thanks to local donations and support. Ù

SASKATOON

By Noelle chorney

A bit about Noelle Noelle is a lifelong fan of Saskatoon and Saskatchewan. She has chosen to make her home here and loves sharing her city and province with others. Food is Noelle’s other passion—she cooks it, eats it, thinks about it, talks about it and writes about it. She has worked as a food critic, but these days you can often find her on food judging panels. She is the leader of Slow Food Saskatoon, Saskatoon’s senior judge for Gold Medal Plates, and records some of her dining and cooking adventures on amazoninthekitchen.ca.

S

askatoon is a booming culinary destination, with flavours and dining experiences to satisfy any taste. We have recently received international attention for our cutting edge chefs—but locals have enjoyed the amazing fresh ingredients that grow in Canada’s breadbasket long before we were on the foodie map. The taste of our namesake berries is like nothing else. Sample saskatoon berry yogurt from Legacy Yogurt and Hounjet’s Orchard, Saskatoon Swirl ice cream from Prairie Sun Orchard, or pick up a slice of pie (or a whole one—why not?) from Riverbend Plantation. All of these treats are available at the Saskatoon Farmer’s Market, open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. If you want to get up close and personal with your saskatoons or other summer berries, try one of the many U-pick options while enjoying a scenic drive down Valley Road. End your day with a serving of unique saskatoon perogies at the Berry Barn. 12 | EXPLOREYXE

A Moveable Feast

There are so many ways to enjoy food in Saskatoon other than a formal sit-down meal. • Tap into Saskatoon’s food truck scene, follow @yxestreetfood on Twitter, or • Download the Snack Map app, which tracks the location of registered food trucks around town. Some favourites: • Rebel Melt is a multi-award-winning truck specializing in legendary southern-inspired grilled cheese sandwiches. • Soom Soom is a rare gem, offering Middle-Eastern inspired pitas or bowls, topped with exquisite locally made pickled rhubarb and other creative condiments. • Ace Burger serves up classic hamburgers originally created in the kitchen of The Congress Beer House. New to Saskatoon is Taste It Food Tours, which combines a heritage walking tour with stops at local restaurants and food purveyors. Learn about Saskatoon’s history while strolling through our historic neighbourhoods, and stop for tasty snacks along the way.

Mixing Culture and Flavour

Looking for something to do that can end in a delicious lunch? Wanuskewin Heritage Park is a stunning destination that has been a gathering place for thousands of years. Explore the cultural centre or walk the trails leading to archaeological digs, an ancient medicine wheel and amazing prairie vistas. Soothe your soul at the café with bison stew, rabbit pot pie or Muskeg tea-battered whitefish. If you visit Saskatoon between August 17 and 19, you can get a taste of the many cultures in Saskatoon during Folkfest. Multi-cultural pavilions serve traditional foods from Norway, Ireland, the Philippines, Caribbean and more. The German Cultural Centre hosts the German pavilion where they often serve a whole roast pig. If you miss Folkfest you can still enjoy rouladen, bratwurst, schnitzel and other German YOUR GUIDE TO DISCOVERING SASKATOON | 13 classics throughout the year. u

t Take your own international tour through town any time of year! Whether you’re on foot, bicycle or traveling by car, you’ll find diverse flavours in many neighbourhoods. In Caswell Hill, enjoy a Caribbean twist at Konga Café, offering authentic Jamaican food with a side of hot banana sauce. You’ll love the feeling of getting away to a tropical destination at Las Palapas on Victoria Avenue, while enjoying a cold cervesa and some piping hot coconut shrimp. Add some heat to your lunch or dinner at Spicy Bite for Indian and Pakistani take out or à la carte dining. It’s hard to resist the choices of the buffet, including salads, Indian pickle, tandoori, fresh naan, pakoras, and several meat and vegetable curries.

Golden Pagoda at 25th Street and 2nd Avenue is the only Burmese restaurant in Saskatchewan, offering a Burmese twist on noodle bowls, soups and curries. A personal favourite is the daily soup and a pickled green tea leaf salad. Saskatoon’s Chinatown is on 20th street, between Avenue A and E. For authentic handmade dumplings, visit Jin Jin Dumpling. You’ll find a more modern take on Asian cuisine, like bacon fried rice or Szechuan peppercorn chili tofu at the Odd Couple.

Cocktail Culture

Distilleries have been coming into their own. Lucky Bastard Distilleries’ newly opened tasting room is a must-see. They have crafted several flavours of vodka including dill pickle, as well as Gambit Gin and berry liqueurs. Stop in for a tour to sample their locally inspired cocktails. Black Fox Farm and Distillery on Valley Road offers gin, triticale or wheat vodka and several liqueurs, including raspberry and haskap (a hardy berry developed at the University of Saskatchewan). Their gin sells out quickly. If you’re into more of a traditional cocktail menu, check out Bon Temps for a New Orleans vibe and a classic Sloe Gin Fizz or an Old Fashioned.

The Classics

But where can you get a good steak, burger, or plate of pasta? Here are some of my go-to places. Cut Casual Steak and Tap serves reasonably priced, dry-aged steaks. Enjoy them in the formal dining room or in the more casual Half Cut Lounge. The Butcher Burger at Ayden Restaurant and Bar has received international attention. It’s a must if you can get it before it sells out daily. Classic pasta dishes abound at Taverna Italian Kitchen, serving up northern Italian cuisine since 1969. Il Salici restaurant also offers some classic Italian pasta and meat dishes overlooking the Willows Golf Course. For a modern take on pasta, visit Primal, where acclaimed chef Christie Peters’ (also of The Hollows), specializes in handmade pasta and Italian comfort food using Saskatchewan heritage grains and whole animal butchery. Or go all out at Little Grouse on the Prairie, Dale McKay’s second restaurant. Order Alla Famiglia, a multi-course shared meal including fresh made pasta and other locally inspired Italian classics. ADVENTURER

By ricky forbes

A bit about Ricky Ricky Forbes is a professional storm chaser, action adventurer, photographer and speaker. After a few years in a suit, Forbes — who grew up riding dirt bikes and snowboarding in rural Saskatchewan — ditched the rat race in favour of driving directly into some of the wildest storms on the planet. When not hunting tornadoes you will find Ricky exploring our beautiful earth and pursuing the next biggest action adventure he can get his hands on. Ricky is the star of the show Tornado Hunters, host of Woods Canada's Greatest Explorer and host on Much Music's 'Far and Wide'.

Y

ou’ll definitely want to get to know Ricky Forbes’ Saskatoon. Spend a day with him as he takes us to his favourite haunts, finds his adrenaline rush, and savours the local patio culture.

If it wasn’t obvious, let me say, I love being outdoors. Saskatoon is a city that gives me the opportunity to do what I love every single day. It doesn’t always have to be an adrenaline rush, but I do like to be challenged. I also like to show off this city, so when I have friends in town, here’s how we’d spend the day: We’d start the day off at one of my favourite spots, the South Saskatchewan River - you see the city from a completely different perspective. Getting on the river for some stand up paddleboarding (SUP) 16 16 || EXPLOREYXE

is one of my favorite activities, it’s great for all skill levels. Get out and disconnect, explore and soak in the moment. You can see wildlife too, as you slip by practically unnoticed. Lots of opportunities for photos for sure. By noon, we’ve probably worked up an appetite. If we’ve rented our paddleboards from Escape Sports, then one of my fave restaurants is right next door. Drift Café is a cool spot with great coffee and lunch, and the inside ambience is unreal. Next up: spending the afternoon exploring Saskatoon’s neighbourhoods. After a stroll through the Saskatoon Farmer’s Market in Riversdale, I like to check out the startups at Ideas Inc. Saskatoon’s entrepreneurship scene is a rad, thriving culture here. Love to stop by cool shops for local clothing and craft brew. From Riversdale, we’d walk east to the downtown core. This area is filled with just amazing restaurants and independent stores. In the evening, it’s time to fill up on some great food and nightlife. From downtown, we’d walk up the Broadway Bridge and stop in at Una Pizza + Wine for supper. The outside patio is a great spot with an upbeat, fun vibe. Then I’d suggest we hit one other place after supper on Broadway, maybe Leopold’s Tavern or The Hose and Hydrant, to soak up the last of the day’s rays. Afterwards, we’d go back downtown – it really lights up at night! It’s definitely the place to be. I love live music, so I’d take my friends over to The Capitol for a show, and of course, they keep a pretty good stock of local beer on tap. YOUR GUIDE TO DISCOVERING EXPLOREYXE SASKATOON | 17 16

Looking for your own adventure in Saskatoon? Here’s Ricky’s top 10 recommendations: 1) Paddle the river. Grab a paddle board or kayak and get out on the South Saskatchewan River. If you only have an hour, launch from under the Broadway Bridge and paddle either direction. If you have an afternoon, drop in at the Berry Barn and paddle into Saskatoon takes about 4 hours. 2) Peddle the river. You can mountain bike over 80km of trails on either side of the river. If you want to step it up, ride the trails on the east side of the river from the train bridge to Broadway. The lines get fast and tight - as always wear protective gear and watch out for pedestrians!

3) Jump out of a perfectly good airplane. One of my favourite activities is skydiving and doing it over Saskatoon and the beautiful prairies is epic. Contact Skydive Saskatoon to get it lined up!

5) Cheer on the number one Lacrosse team in Canada! Get out to a Sask Rush game for the best of professional lacrosse. The atmosphere from start to finish is like a rock show - but with sports! 4) In the winter cross country ski as many of the groomed trails around the city as possible. If you can do half the Meewasin Valley trail system, that’s worth bragging about! 6) Jump around at Apex Trampoline Park. Over 10,000 square feet of trampolines! The jump zones, obstacles, etc. are an absolute blast. 7) Back to my love of the river: strap on those runners on and go for a jog along the Meewasin trails. Check in with Brainsport to see if they have any groups heading out to join up with. 8) Smash the speed limit and drive a race car at Wyant Group Raceway. With the WGR Experience, book your session and you could be ripping around the track with an expert. 9) Paintball! Get out to Rock Ridge Paintball and Lasertag Games and battle your friends or test your skills against others. 10) Last but not least is wall climbing. Grip It is the best climbing centre in Saskatchewan, and for good reason. Whether you are a first timer or long time expert, you’ll love it here.
