2017 has been an important year 2017 has been an important year for Trackunit – a year of transformation. Our focus has been sharpened and software has become a new focal point. We have rationalized our product portfolio and strengthened our communication with the goal of positioning Trackunit as a global player in the market. Over the last 8-9 years, as we developed our platform, technology has been in a continuous state of evolution. A lot has happened in that period, and today new opportunities both in the cloud and on mobile platforms have opened possibilities for new products and services. At the same time the data collected from machinery out in the field is able to provide completely new insights that can improve efficiency, time and communication among the people taking part in construction projects. Through smart utilization of data, we can reduce delays and budget over-runs, both of which are critical pain points in modern construction.

However, technology is also one of the major challenges facing the construction industry. When McKinsey charted the most digitized industries, you had to turn all the way to page 21 of a 22 page report to find construction. According to McKinsey, only agriculture and hunting are less digitized. This stark analysis reveals not just the massive need for digitization of our industry, but also the huge benefits which could follow on. At Trackunit we see digitization as a way to change the way we do construction. We are not setting out to disrupt the industry, but we do want to challenge old methods of working through progressive and meaningful collaborations. We strongly believe that we can build new value-added digital products and services through co-creation with OEMs and fleet owners. Together, we can collectively catapult the digitization of construction, and thus efficiency throughout this industry. At the same time, digital services will not only increase our client’s

03

core business, but lighten the workload and decrease costs for their customers. At Trackunit we want to accelerate the industry into new and innovative dimensions, but to do so we will have to establish ourselves as data curators. We can detect and collect an incredible amount of data with telematics. But for all this data to become valuable to the user the question we need to ask is, how much is enough? How much data is enough to bridge the gap between man and machine, between fleet owner and contractor, and between fleet manager and site manager. At Trackunit we don’t just want to create the best telematics in the market. We are dedicated to challenge the status quo by creating services that connect the entire ecosystem within construction. Services that will change the future of construction.

The Division Trackunit Predict is a division where nobody talks about what, when, and how, but only what if? A cornerstone within the Predict division is to reverse the historic position of the construction industry as last adopters to become first movers and innovators.

Learn more at www.trackunit.com/predict

The construction industry faces some big challenges as large projects across asset classes typically take 20 percent longer than scheduled to finish and exceed agreed budgets by as much as 80 percent. That is pretty remarkable for an industry that represents nothing less than 12% of the global BNP. There is in other words “room for improvement. But to create effective solutions, we have to see

both the big picture and the small details. We need to decipher the entire ecosystem that makes up the construction industry so we can provide all the stakeholders involved with the right data at the right time. Accordingly, we have established a new division with a laser focus to assimilate this challenge.

We call this new and slightly secretive division, Predict. It is the place where we have brought together the abilities and resources to create new digital solutions and services. Solutions that will resolve the massive challenges facing the industry one by one. A cornerstone within the Predict division is to reverse the historic position of the

construction industry as last adopters to become first movers and innovators. This requires adoption of digitization and new technologies. Right now the penetration of connected equipment is less than 10 percent of the equipment triangle, so we are only scratching the surface. But we want to change this metric.

Connecting equipment of all sizes could be the tipping point we need to energize a digitization revolution. As the cost and pace of connected things plummets, we see the trend of connected devices increasing in all sorts of industrial applications. This is a trend we need to follow. We need to harness its possibilities. There is an incredible potential which can be realized by connecting the remaining 90 percent of our triangle of construction equipment. Connecting equipment of all sizes could be the tipping point we need to energize a digitization revolution. Another cornerstone of Predict is the commitment to be super user-centric. By developing our products around the various stakeholders that span the entire ecosystem of rental companies, contractors, operators and OEM’s, we can locate the fundamental challenges to each of these stakeholders.

As we come up with ideas to solve specific challenges we work in fast paced innovation cycles. Through these innovation cycles we can build rapidly to bring solutions to market, measure usage, and bring home learnings in a very short time span. This enables us to continuously develop and optimize solutions created in close collaboration with our customers. Through co-creation we get to work in close proximity to each stakeholder in question. This makes the process of addressing pain points and challenges, testing the solutions and learning from results much more efficient.

THE ENTIRE FLEET AT YOUR FINGERTIPS The ambition with Trackunit Go is to provide the service technician with the right data on the right machine at the right time. It’s equally important that the data provided to the technician is accessible, understandable and easy to use. Looking at an entire fleet, we collect data from hundreds of thousands of data points, so the most important exercise is to curate the immense amount of information and make it available on the go. By doing so, we want to put the

entire fleet in the palm of the hand of the technician. The right machine is easily found and the immediate requirement acted upon in close to real time, whether it’s a scheduled service, an emergency call from a client or an alarm that goes off. With Trackunit Go the technician gets just what is needed, right when it’s needed.

CONNECTING MAN & MACHINE In the process of making sites safer and increasing machine lifetime, the operator has a very important role to play. Until now we’ve been working towards the goal of connecting the equipment to the internet. Because up to now, the metrics we have been developing around has solely been machine data. But to close the circle we need to connect the operator to the internet as well and include their data on visual use and abuse. According to a user survey we’ve

made, most operators find pre-checks important. However, many believe that it’s too time consuming - especially given the fact that often pre-check data isn’t stored because it’s recorded using pen and paper. This is a very valuable though untapped datastream. Once combined with machine data our customers can deliver better, faster services as machine utilization is made transparent.

While construction sites continue to be high risk work environments, Trackunit is working with Humac Civil Engineering Ltd. to increase personnel safety for on-site plant and equipment use.

HOW TELEMATICS ENABLES HEALTH AND SAFETY GAINS FOR HUMAC CIVIL ENGINEERING

Humac is a fast-growing civil engineering and ground-work company founded in 2007 and operating nationally. It includes some of the UK’s largest housebuilders and construction companies as clients. Their rapid growth has been supported by its commitment to a technology and process driven approach. Humac’s contract with Trackunit has helped it to develop its highly secure and safety-first environment for employees and visitors to its sites.

34

33

Investment in efficiency fuels health and safety improvements We have developed a range of upgrades that add competencies to our health and safety processes

During the past few years the company has invested heavily in owned-plant, which now numbers around 150 machines including excavators, dumpers and rollers. Staff numbers have grown to 80 direct staff and up to 250 contractors, depending on the active projects. In terms of safety, Humac has a requirement for a plant fleet management system that would add compliance to Health and Safety codes, while creating efficiencies in its on-site machine stock across its sites. A key objective was to implement a system that would allow its human resources team oversight of user access on all machines on multiple sites. Health and safety is of the highest priority and as the company has grown, managing access to plant by staff qualified to operate the machines has become increasingly complex. Humac management investigated various companies that offer vehicle tracking solutions, including evaluation during on-site trials. Trackunit was selected as the system that provided the most comprehensive solution and the only one that offered the right level of plant access control. “Workers, operators and site visitors are all at risk if construction plant is not properly managed and controlled”

Frank Wilson, procurement director at Humac, takes up the story, “With an expanding stock of machines, our requirement was to implement safety features that would assist our operators and allow us to monitor the location and activity levels of our plant. Workers, operators and site visitors can all be at risk if construction plant is not properly managed and controlled. With Trackunit, we have developed a range of upgrades that add competencies to our health and safety processes ensuring that we provide the highest levels of compliance.” Trackunit’s solution was the only system that provided the range of capabilities that Humac required. All operators’ qualifications, training plans and driver permissions are centrally held within HR and this data is accessed from laptops by site managers providing up to date details on all operators. Site managers are able to allocate operators to specific machines using individually programmed RFID cards, and this information is recorded by the system. During the system’s roll out, each vehicle was fitted with an ID system which controls the ignition and the operators use a Humac branded RFID card or ID code to start the machine.

Out on-site, Ian McArthur, plant supervisor stated, “It is a very simple system to use and our operators understand the benefits that the card system offers. If there is an accident or damage occurs to the machine, we can easily trace who was operating it at the time. It has increased our operators’ awareness of health and safety.”

Humac has also provided input to safety upgrades to the system, such as ignition locks linked to the use of the seatbelt. A further enhancement is vehicle mounted flashing beacons that indicate whether a machine’s seatbelt is fastened during operation and which can be viewed from some distance away. These are additional safety features that Humac’s customers are finding increasingly valuable when developing site proposals

36

It just makes sense Embedded sensors link all the machines to Humac’s Doncaster head office, feeding updates to the system. This rich data stream allows the head office team to analyze which machines are operating, where and when, providing accurate utilization reports on a daily basis. Underutilized machines can be identified and the contracts manager can investigate and reassign machines to other sites to increase utilization, if required. Since the introduction of the system, Humac’s hired-in machine use has decreased noticeably, illustrating the benefit of the company’s knowledge-based approach to machine utilization. The benefit of accurate business data is clearly illustrated by Humac’s approach. Operating at the forefront of telematics, within the construction market, it is a step ahead using data not simply to gain an operational advantage, but to develop procedures that increase health and safety awareness and compliance. Together this provides competitive advantage in an aggressive industry sector.

Moving forward, Humac and Trackunit are working to implement machine servicing procedures which would provide another level of utilization planning. This addition would ensure all plant is routinely maintained so that vehicles are operating at optimum levels and to safety standards. Humac also believes that the Trackunit system has wider sales opportunities within the machine rental market. Frank Wilson commented, “Increasingly our customers want the same health and safety features that we have introduced with the Trackunit system across the site. A rental company that offers machines with these benefits would certainly have something extra to offer. For us, to rent machines that offer this level of compliance would fit seamlessly with our machine stock and ensure a consistent high level of Health and Safety compliance, security and utilisation tracking across the site”. “Trackunit delivered on every promise”. This system has given us a level of control and increased visibility of our fleet that we did not know was possible. Trackunit’s understanding of our industry is second to none and has really helped in the fine-tuning of the system and the upgrades we have developed together.”

Adrian McDonald, MD Humac.
