ocated in the heart of California’s Gold Country, El Dorado County is one of the most beautiful and diverse places you’ll ever experience. And if it is true that history repeats itself, you have definitely come to the right place! The 1848 discovery of gold here in Coloma touched off the largest Gold Rush in history. This singular event changed the fate of California and the entire nation. El Dorado County today is much more than rustic mining towns and historic sites. The area provides an incredibly affordable year-round vacation and a reason for every season.

laden evergreens, pristine mountain air and stunning alpine lakes are just some of the reasons for this season. Over one hundred farms and ranches make El Dorado a perfect fall destination. Visitors step back in time and find their day filled with old-fashioned fun and a bountiful harvest. Of course El Dorado’s award winning wine country beckons visitors year round. Its 60 family owned wineries are renowned for making vibrantly flavorful, distinctly delicious wines.

his organization of farmers and agriculture supporters was formed in the early ’90s to broaden recognition and appreciation of agriculture in El Dorado County, our largest “industry”! We believe in the connection of fresh food directly to you….. the closer the better, and a series of “Trails” was designated with signs and the names of farms you might wish to visit to make this connection. Be sure to use our maps in this issue. If you are looking for the best tree ripened fruit or fresh vegetables, often organic, or Christmas trees or nursery plants the Farm Trails system will take you there. You can have fun following the trail year ‘round since

there is always something to be enjoyed even in the non-harvest season. We have wineries within two appellations, alpaca farms, the largest Bonsai nursery in Northern California, herbs, flowers, olive oil tasting and more from over 100 members that support agriculture in our County. They are always glad to see you and welcome you to their little bit of paradise! This is adventure with little expense and lots of fun for couples or families with charming Bed and Breakfasts and recreation available to extend your stay. For further information please check out our website at www.edcfarmtrails.org. Welcome to El Dorado County where you can get close to nature!

Spring and summer is filled with outdoor adventure from mild to wild. The stunning American River provides breathtaking views and abundant wildlife on guided river trips. Nearly one million acres of national forest land provide a perfect escape for hiking, fishing, camping, golfing, boating, horseback riding and gold panning.

Million-dollar jackpots. We’ve got that. Blackjack, Live Card Craps, and Mystery Card Roulette. We’ve got that, too. It’s all here, spread out over two levels, including one floor entirely dedicated to non-smoking action. Plus an all-new Non-Smoking Live Poker Room, five fantastic restaurants, free valet, covered parking, and the friendliest service around. All that, day after day and night after night. It’s no wonder – This is where Sacramento gambles.

amino was originally a lumber mill town and had a reputation as the Sugar Pine capital of logging. The mill railroad lines are no longer in use, but their gradual grades are now the domain of happy hikers who use the El Dorado Trail system from Placerville to Camino. Camino is most known for being the home of the Apple Hill® Growers and its 55 members. Even though fall is considered the “high season”, some ranches are open all year. The season begins with iris blooms in May and continues with blueberries and assorted other berries in June, July and August. Delicious stone fruit is ripe and available from July through September when pears and apples begin to ripen. The famous area bakeshops begin creating fruit delicacies at the same time and continue through pumpkin and Christmas tree seasons. The Pollock Pines area has a rich history that began

when westward immigration brought gold seekers into this part of California via the Mormon Immigrant Trail. This colorful and unhurried route begins south of Pollock Pines and is one gateway to vast areas of the Eldorado National Forest. History also raced through this part of the county when young men on fast horses delivered the mail and news between St. Louis and San Francisco on the Pony Express.

Every person defines adventure differently and everyone can generally find some place in the Eldorado National Forest that meets their internal picture. As adults and children become more disconnected from nature in our technological world, the forest becomes increasingly important as an open space for people to connect or meet nature on terms they are comfortable with. Visitors utilize trails for nature viewing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, horseback riding, motorcycles, and four-wheel driving. opportunity to venture out and create their own outdoor experience while utilizing the same trail systems. For example, many non-motorized trails are open to hikers, cyclists and equestrian users. Motorized users may encounter hikers or horses out on some of the motorized trails. Respecting other visitors and maintaining trail etiquette is key to a successful adventure and building memories. For those intrepid adventurers looking to find nature on its own terms in a place where there are no buildings, roads, or motorized use, Desolation Wilderness is the place to go. Backpackers can find some remote country in the northern and interior sections to spend a little time bonding with nature. The edge area and southern half of Desolation is very popular due to the shorter trail distances and many lakes. Rugged trails provide the only access, and hazards such as high stream crossings and sudden stormy weather may be encountered at any time. These are all part of a wilderness experience. Wilderness permits are required for Desolation Wilderness and overnight permits have a fee. Given the popularity of this beautiful place a quota exists in the summer so obtaining an overnight permit in advance is recommended for stays in the popular zones. For more information contact the Pacific Ranger Station at (530) 647-5415. If you are www.edc-farmtrails.org

looking for the wilderness experience without the fees or wilderness restrictions then the high mountain area between Highway 50 and Highway 88 is perfect. Most of this area is managed by the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (530)543-2600. With a free campfire permit, orienteering skills, and some common sense an excellent adventure is waiting to be had. Access is from the Big Meadows Trailhead on Highway 89, from Meiss Trailhead on Highway 88, or Echo Summit on Highway 50. For the motor folks, the Eldorado National Forest has three Off-Highway Vehicle Trail systems. Elkins and Gold Note trails on the North South Road are accessed from Highway 50 and Mormon Emigrant Trail on the north and Highway 88 and Omo Ranch road on the southern end. These trails are great for motorcycles and there are limited trails for all-terrain vehicles. The Rock Creek Trail system in Georgetown has a network of over 100 miles of trails for novice and accomplished riders. Four wheelers can enjoy the Rubicon 4WD trail north of Loon Lake, the Barrett Lake Jeep Trail out of the Wrights Lake area, or the Strawberry Canyon 4WD running south of Highway 50 to Highway 88. For more information visit the Eldorado National Forest website at www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado or call a Forest Service office.

lacerville is a charming California “gold rush” town named after the placer gold deposits found in its river beds and hills between Spanish Ravine and the town plaza in the late 1840s. Placerville’s treasured heritage is reflected in the historical, 19th century architecture of its downtown core. During the gold rush, Placerville became an important supply center for the surrounding mining camps. Placerville was also known as “Hangtown” in its early days. Although many stories exist on how this name was acquired, the most famous story involved a colorful event that occurred in January of 1849 involving three men accused of murder and robbery. With no more evidence than that, a short 30 minute trial took place and a unanimous “guilty” verdict was given. The crowd demanded that the men be sentenced to “death by hanging” and the rest was history. Throughout history, several famous entrepreneurs have conducted business on Main Street. Phillip Armour (meat packer), Mark Hopkins (railroad financier), John Studebaker (auto maker), and Snowshoe Thompson (mail-carrier through the Sierra) were among the well-known shopkeepers on Main Street. Today, the town is a peaceful blend of old and new that offers something for everyone. Pioneers, artists, gold-miners

and entrepreneurs have called it home. An important historic landmark that still remains on Main Street is the Bell Tower. This tower has watched Placerville’s history pass beneath it for well over 100 years. Today it proudly stands as a monument to honor our city’s volunteer firemen and a gathering place for local celebrations and special events.

His Story: Davey “Doc”

Realtor

Wiser knows exactly when he moved to El Dorado County, Calif. It was 5:15 p.m. March 28, 1977. The Los Angeles native immediately felt at home in the county where the Gold Rush began and where towns like Placerville, formerly Hangtown, are steeped in Old West tradition. “ I found my niche in life when I got up here,” Wiser said.

M AKE E L D ORADO C OUNTY YOUR DESTINATION His Vision: I wanted to be a cowboy in the worst way when I was a kid,” Wiser said. Part of his attraction to the lifestyle was the “cowboy creed,” which promotes honesty, hard work, chivalry and good deeds. Wiser’s adherence to these principles has won him many admirers. As one resident put it “…he is part of the identity of our historical town. He’s a historical icon.”

Our strength of character today: Wiser’s distinct look and love of all things Old West have made him something of a celebrity in the county. He strolls the streets in old-time cowboy garb, offering free stagecoach rides down Placerville’s historic Main Street and taking part in just about every historical re-enactment that includes a horse.

Certificate of Authenticity: “When I came to El Dorado County, my childhood dreams began to come true,” Wiser said. Taken in part from timesleader.com, Diana Lambert, McClatchy Newspapers

El Dorado County’s family owned wineries beckon visitors with a wide diversity of award winning wines, consistently bring home medal winners from competitions throughout the state and beyond. In fact, El Dorado winemakers credit the terrain, sunny days and cool nights for creating ideal conditions for growing grapes from the world’s finest wine regions, including Bordeaux, the Rhone, Germany, Italy and Spain. During your visit to El Dorado’s tasting rooms, don’t be surprised if you discover it’s the winemaker or a family member who is pouring samples of the winery’s current releases. l Dorado wine country boasts of 60 unique wineries encompassed in two appellations located amid the rolling foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The El Dorado wine district is one of California's oldest wineproducing areas. Vineyards and wineries first flourished here during the Gold Rush era. A century later, in the 1970s, a renaissance in the growth of premium vineyards and wineries began in this picturesque community. Since becoming its own appellation in 2001, Fair Play has developed a reputation for high quality wine grapes that yield deeply flavorful, intense wines from an amazingly diverse range of grape varieties.

Opal Sadler, known as “Poor Red and Rich Opal” hangs near the entrance to the restaurant. The napkins used to feature a drawing of Opal all gussied up in jewels and furs while Red looked, well, poor, with his pockets turned inside out. Change is given in Susan B. Anthony silver dollars and the two level horseshoe bar is made for cruising new arrivals. Poor Red’s is world famous for its Gold Cadillac, an alcoholic libation created by Frank Cline, a former Poor Red’s bartender. He claims inspiration for the creamy concoction came from visiting honeymooners who drove a Cadillac in the 1950s. Gold Cadillac’s are a blended drink of Galliano liqueur, half and half, White Cream de Cacao and ice. In 1994 Poor Red’s was honored by Galliano as the single largest consumer of the beverage in the Western Hemisphere and today accounts for 3% market for the product. Poor Red’s had not changed much since those early years. You’ll still find dice games, Gold Cadillacs and you’ll definitely have a story of your own to tell when you visit. PHOTO BY MOUNTAIN DEMOCRAT

t is difficult to travel anywhere and not find someone that has heard of Poor Red’s in the historic town of El Dorado. The building has been a lot of things; A Wells Fargo gold depository, an apothecary and a brothel. But the colorful history of Poor Red’s does not stop there. Just like a story out of the old west, it is said that Harry P. “Red” Sadler won the title to the business in 1948 in a dice game with the previous owner. When the name changed to Poor Reds in 1954, it was on its way to becoming a hub for Gold Rush history. Painted on the walls are murals with prospectors, Chinese, stagecoach stops and battling miners depicting the early Gold Rush town of Mud Springs when it still existed. From the day it opened, Poor Red’s has been an “experience,” partly because of the restaurant but mostly because of the bar. A photograph of the founders Red and

Experience the History and Adventure of the n 1848 James Marshall discovered Gold in Coloma. Today visitors continue to discover gold as the Coloma Valley area has become a world-class vacation destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The area that lies north of U.S. Highway 50, between the Middle and South Forks of the American River is often referred to as “The Divide” by its residents. It covers 412 square miles and has a population of approximately 13,400. The recreational opportunities are numerous in both the Valley and the Divide. Hiking, horseback riding, camping, mountain biking, wine tasting, tubing, kayaking and white water rafting are just some of the activities in the area. During the summer months it is easy to find a company offering guided river trips from mild to wild on the stunning South Fork of the American River. Because of the river’s

wild and scenic designation, the Coloma Valley and Georgetown Divide has not, and will never see the type of development that usually occurs in tourist destinations. Historic Highway 49 runs right through The Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. It is open year round and features a replica of the original sawmill where gold was first found. Learn about the California Gold Rush at the museum or enjoy a few character actors milling about the Park providing authentic demonstrations such as blacksmithing, gold panning and even quilting! For a small fee, children can even try out gold panning keeping whatever they find. Downtown Georgetown (pop: 962) looks much as it did long ago with its wide streets and historic buildings. The people living here are truly far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. But once a year, in July, 15,000 people nationwide descend upon the Divide for the Jeepers Jamboree. They come with their jeeps to ride the Rubicon Trail in the El Dorado National Forest to test their driving skills in this rocky and challenging terrain. Cool received its own share of national attention during the Amgen Tour of California in May. The natural scenic beauty combined with the 1,500-foot ascent along winding Highway 49 positioned Cool as an ideal viewing area for the world-class event.

f you have not seen Bassi Falls at peak flow, you absolutely have to make the trip out to see it. Bassi Creek hurtles 109 ft. over a granite cliff, crashing over and through many large rocks. It is simply an awesome display of power and force. It is an easy 10 minute walk from the parking area to the falls. There is now an official, maintained trail leading to Bassi Falls. It is very easy to follow, though once the trail reaches an open area, it becomes indistinct crossing over the granite rock. A line of rocks has been made so it is fairly easy to continue following the trail to the waterfall. This is a fairly popular area, so you probably won't be alone here, unless you come during the week. Sunset is certainly the best time to visit and photograph Bassi Falls, as you will get the warm light shining on the falls at the end of the day. In the morning, the sun comes up right behind the falls and hits it early. This hike is perfect for beginners, kids and dogs!

• Easy, short hike to incredible waterfall, 1.2 miles round trip, 1 hour • Best Season: Late April through May

Directions: From Hwy #50 about 20 miles east of Placerville, turn left (north) onto Ice House Rd (Forest Road 3). Drive 15.9 miles on Ice House Rd. to Union Valley Reservoir. Turn right onto an unmarked dirt road (Road 12N32A), just after crossing the bridge over Big Silver Creek (opposite Big Silver group camp). Drive 0.2 miles to a junction and turn left. Then drive 0.8 miles to another junction and turn right. Drive another 0.7 miles to the trailhead at the end of the road (total 1.7 miles along the dirt road).

Dutch Creek Falls Coloma, Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park

Directions: From Hwy 49 in Coloma, turn east on Mt. Murphy Rd., drive across the bridge. Turn right on Bayne Rd., and drive 0.5 miles to the trailhead on the left. But note there is no parking at the trailhead. There is a $8 parking fee, which must be paid at the museum. Excerpts taken from Leon Turnbull, www.waterfallwest.com

• Easy, short hike to incredible waterfall, 1.8 miles round trip, 1 hour

n the wet season, Dutch Creek Falls is a beautiful 112 ft. waterfall in Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park • Best Season: Late April through May in Coloma. The trail to Dutch Creek Falls is now publicly accessible on state park land. There is no parking along Bayne Road. Cars may legally park near the bridge on Mt. Murphy Road. Purchase a parking pass at the museum. The trail is easy to follow along Dutch Creek. You can't see the creek from the trail until you get closer to the falls. After about 3/4 mile hiking, you will see the lower falls on Dutch Creek. This one is 24 ft. high, and it’s possible to get down to the base of the falls. After seeing this first waterfall there are two beauties where Johntown Creek and Dutch Creek come together. Both are quite big (97 ft. and 112 ft.). It is stunningly beautiful. It’s dangerous to get close to these falls due to the steep and slippery terrain. The trail does continue above Johntown Creek Falls, and there is one more 60 ft. waterfall shortly above this main drop on Johntown Creek. This is one hike you will definitely want to do in the winter months when the creeks are flowing well. Watch for poison oak, especially in the winter when it cannot be easily seen as it is not in leaf. In the spring, there are wildflowers along the trail and Murphy Mountain has a beautiful display of poppies.

The Character: Anthony Mansour, Chairman, CEO, of the Mansour Company PHOTO BY JIM BARNES

His Story: From the moment he saw the gently undulating terrain of El Dorado Hills in 1979, real estate investor Anthony Mansour knew he'd found a rural treasure. Within hours of seeing the land, he wrote a personal check for a deposit of $50,000 for the 7,500 acres that were for sale that day, and for which he and his business partners would ultimately pay $8.5 million. From that day forward his dream began to take shape. His Vision: The Mansour vision has provided El Dorado Hills with something that many newer communities lack, a real downtown. His plan revolved around a central, main shopping street, with supporting businesses on the outskirts of the shopping center; it is a gathering spot and center of a bustling town. Our strength of character today: Tony’s vision, passion, and love of European villages, complete with timeless buildings and a homey main street, brought the El Dorado Hills Town Center to life!

Certificate of Authenticity: “We are three generations now. Maybe my grandson will be working on this someday. When you talk about two or three generations working on one project, it’s about more than just making money.” www.edc-farmtrails.org

estled amongst the pine and oak forests in the southern part of El Dorado County is one of our best kept secrets, Fair Play. Although Fair Play was once a thriving rural mining, agricultural and timber outpost of the Gold Rush, now our reference to the name Fair Play has broader meanings. At an altitude of about 2,300 ft., this area is home to a world class wine region. The Fair Play appellation is known for its high quality wine grapes that yield deeply flavorful intense wines from an amazing diverse range of grape varieties. We invite you to explore the beautiful byways that include the communities of Fair Play, Mt. Aukum, Somerset and Omo Ranch. You will find nearly 20 boutique wineries, a variety of family farms offering seasonal favorites, Christmas trees, flowers and good things to eat, classic horses, exotic Alpacas and llamas. The residents here take great pride in their land, their products and their customers. An overnight stay is quite unique in the Fair Play, Somerset area. Fabulous Bed & Breakfast Inns, charming country homes and rustic lodges await visitors for an overnight getaway, or a weekly stay all located within the Fair Play

appellation. No need to miss out on the modern conveniences to enjoy the warm hospitality, gourmet breakfast, and a very personal, unique experience. There is a feeling in the Fair Play area that you have stepped back to a slower, simpler time in America. People welcome you with a warm smile and families still work hard making a living off the land. This feeling will keep you coming back time after time! Weds-Fri 7am-2pm

The Character: John MacCready, winemaker and owner of Sierra Vista Winery

His Story: A native Californian and a former college professor John MacCready and his wife Barbara, bought their property in Pleasant Valley in 1977. The winery farms thirty-two acres of mountain vineyards on challenging slopes from 2800 to 2900 feet elevation. Mountain vineyards are low yielding with intense flavors, outstanding character and provide thrilling tractor driving. His Vision: Recognizing the area’s similarity to the Rhone region of France, John was one of the first to create El Dorado’s versions of these varietals. He pioneered the rebirth of mountain viticulture and is considered the "founding father" of the Rhone movement in El Dorado.

Our strength of character today: We have witnessed the growing popularity of the Rhone varietals among California wine consumers and winemakers alike.

Certificate of Authenticity: “All the foothills were classified as Zinfandel country so when we planted Cabernet Sauvignon we were bucking tradition as we have ever since. Luckily we planted the cab on a site which produces great Cabernet Sauvignon.”

trip to Lake Tahoe’s southern shores is unique. Richly varied, it offers whatever you need to relax away life’s tension. A breathtaking Heavenly vista or a heartstopping mountain bike descent. The thrill of pulling a freshwater salmon from the deep blue or the pure serenity of a lakeside sunset painted before your eyes. The jangle of a jackpot or the sound of your breath alone as you glide over fresh snow. The magic of this place is its perfect ability to be what you need to feel restored – body and soul. Bottomless blue waters, emerald pine and fir draped just below granite peaks that trace a fine line between heaven on earth. Cruise to Emerald Bay to view Vikingsholm Castle on the Tahoe Queen authentic sternwheeler, or gain some altitude and the birds eye view from the top of the Heavenly Gondola. Stroll through the historic Valhalla Estates near the locals’ favorite, Camp Richardson Resort, or fly down the 3100 foot Heavenly zip line. Golf? There’s plenty. Jet ski and power boat rentals? You bet. And for the day’s grand finale, it’s definitely one of the lakeside restaurants for great food and drink complimented by one of our spectacular sunsets. Peppering the summer season is a lineup of great events, including around-the-lake bike tours, the Lake Tahoe Marathon, outdoor music events and of course, the renowned Lights on the Lake Fourth of July Fireworks show, reputed as one of the largest displays west of the Mississippi. A winter day is no less invigorating. We offer miles of awe

inspiring runs for boarders and skiers of all levels at Heavenly Mountain Resort and Sierra-at-Tahoe. There’s tubing, snowbiking, snowmobiling, sledding, sleigh rides and ice skating. And for those who simply enjoy breathing the pristine mountain air, the choices for snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing are as plentiful as our pine trees. The Tahoe Rim Trail, a 165 mile natural wonder, is open to hikers, equestrians and in some areas to mountain bikers, encompasses the ridge tops of the Lake Tahoe Basin and is accessible from 12 different trailheads.

ake Tahoe's unique West shore is an area of unspoiled natural beauty that provides a spectacular vacation. From promontories such as Rubicon Point in D.L. Bliss State Park you can see over one hundred feet into the depths of Lake Tahoe. On the crest of Eagle Falls in Emerald Bay State Park, you can see a brilliant panorama of Emerald Bay (one of the most photographed spots in the world), Fannette Island, Lake Tahoe, and the distant Nevada shore. Balancing Rock, “130 tons of granite resting precariously on a

slender stone base,” is the feature attraction of a short, half mile selfguided nature trail in the northwest section of D.L. Bliss State Park. Vikingsholm Castle, a 1929 38-room reproduction of Scandinavian architecture is a 1.5 miles hike down to the shores of Emerald Bay. Meeks Bay offers a variety of activities and is the perfect trailhead for entering the Desolation Wilderness, Meeks Bay Meadow, and Sugar Pine Point State Park, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. Highlights of the park include summer tours of the Ehrman Mansion, and General Phipps Cabin. www.visit-eldorado.com
