Tracy has a long tradition of strong female business leaders who not only make their home here, but also make our home here better. Inside the pages of Women in Business this

Some have been gracious enough to give away some of the secrets to their success, in the hopes of inspiring other women and men in our community to find a business niche and fill it. We hope you enjoy our annual Women in Business special.
Leverage new tech for business success I n many years as a local event planner and community volunteer, I’ve borne witness to how fearful many business professionals and female entrepreneurs feel about the fast-paced, technology-infused environment we live in today. In some cases, female business owners have avoided exposure to technology altogether. But does it make sense to take this approach? I would say no. As difficult as it may sometimes Grace Paget seem, we must embrace technology, for it offers businesses and people in general the ability to connect, communicate and function much differently from the way we did decades ago. Today, we can do just about anything we can imagine directly from our smartphones. The tools and resources available to us — from Facebook and Twitter to mobile apps and online tools — can be of great impact in our day-to-day lives, but only if we remain open to learning what is necessary and apply-
ing this knowledge with consistency to how we run our businesses and live our lives. On March 21, the Tracy Women’s Forum Association, in collaboration with the city of Tracy, presented the 16th annual Women’s Conference at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts. As the volunteer event director for the association, I was excited for the opportunity to help facilitate a technology breakout session that was focused on explaining what the “cloud” is and how individuals can leverage cloud-based services to be more productive and successful in business and in their personal lives. I honestly wasn’t sure how well received this particular session would be, or if the two speakers visiting from Cisco Systems in Silicon Valley would be able to present their high-level technical information in a way that would be easy for the audience to comprehend and learn from. But I was compelled to give it a try. Although we had a small audience for the 30-minute cloud services presentation, the women and men in attendance were truly engaged in the discussion. At the end, they gave the guest speakers
great reviews. Audience members appreciated the use of simple terminology to explain complex technical details and expressed interest in getting more frequent access to informational sessions like the one they had attended. This is music to my ears. Today, my hope is that the city and the Tracy Chamber of Commerce can work together to emphasize the importance of creating a growing techsavvy Tracy community that can truly benefit from the technology and services offered by the Silicon Valley companies we hope to attract to our city. In September, for the launch of the Taste of the Valley Art & Food Festival, my goal is to apply technology and use social media not only to engage vendors, artists and entertainers, but to also stay connected with our patrons and audiences and strategically gather their input to improve the event. n Grace (Mayorga) Paget is a professional event planner, local business owner, community volunteer and arts commissioner. Dr. Katherine Dejillo Sanchez opened her new dental of�ce, Tracy Center for Dentistry, 2643 Naglee Road, in 2005. She wanted to have a dental of� ce with the warmth and care of a small town dental of� ce and the modern and innovative techniques of a large city dental of�ce. She found that in Tracy because it was a cozy, friendly community and was growing and progressive. Since then the of�ce has grown to include other associate general dentists and specialists, providing family and cosmetic dentistry. The of�ce is distinctive because it has an open and visible sterilization area so people can see how clean and healthy it is for both patients and staff. They have sponsored, volunteered and donated to many charities, programs, health fairs, sports activities, and cultural events. This includes the Tracy Diabetes Health Fair and the Tracy Animal Shelter. She wants to help people stay healthy and keep the community safe. Katherine received her dental degree from the University of the Paci�c dental school in San Francisco in 1997. She has 4 college degrees. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from San Jose State University. She has three Associate of Arts/Sciences degrees from three different community colleges. Before she became a dentist, she was employed and was recognized for her work in the Santa Clara County Health Department. After dental school she worked in Silicon Valley for 7 years prior to opening in Tracy in 2005. She has the highest ratings with the Better Business Bureau throughout all these years. She lives in Tracy with her husband Edward and daughter Helena, both very active with volunteer work at St. Bernard’s School. She came to the U.S. when she was six years old and is from a working class family from the Salinas Valley. She was inspired at a very young age by a group of young volunteer dentists serving needy communities. When they treated her, they were caring and knowledgeable and that is when she decided to become a dentist. She wanted to provide gentle, compassionate and high-tech dentistry in rural communities. Katherine enjoys hiring and training new people in the dental or health �eld. Her parents were young when she was born and she saw them struggle while working and studying. (Her father later strived to become a medical doctor when she was grown.) She has inspired many young people in pursuing a career in the dental �eld, health �eld or careers in helping people. She helps with their schooling, works around their college schedules and tutors. One employee has been there for 7 years. Some that started out as receptionists or assistants are now dentists. Others have opened their own dental offices or moved on to more lucrative careers in the dental and health �eld. She just wants them all to come back or give back to their beginnings, the wonderful city and people of Tracy.
