MAYOR NIC HUNTER “Louisiana Voodoo” Arena League Football (ALF) team that will start ANNOUNCES The Voodoo franchise began in New LOUISIANA Orleans and competed from 2004 to 2008, then again from 2010 to VOODOO 2015. replaced by the Louisiana Swashbucklers. AFL commissioner Lea Hutton said. “Our key points of where we wanted to establish locations really came down to the big C’s. It came down to the ‘C’ of community, and you guys have it here.” Beginning in 2024, fans will be able to attend six home games at Sudduth Coliseum inside the Lake Charles Event Center. Eunice native James Shiver has been named Voodoo’s head coach. A graduate of the University of Lafayette with a master’s from Louisiana College, Shiver most recently served as athletic director and head coach at St. Edmund High School. Calcasieu Parish School Board October 10, 2023 Meeting Summary: Dr. LaFargue presented students of Calcasieu Parish, who made perfect scores on the 2023 LEAP Test, with certificates and CPSB Ambassador yard signs. A short documentary was presented to honor Mr. Martin Payne, Custodian at Vinton High. The board voted and approved all other items on the agenda ranging from the Long Range Planning Committee to hurricane repair reports. Notes: The October 10, 2023 meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by board member Eric Tarver. The invocation and pledge of allegiance were led by Desmond Wallace. The role was called by Superintendent Shannon LaFargue. Members of the board who were absent were Russell Castille and Karen HardyMcReynolds. Present board members were Eric Tarver, Damon Hardesty, Desmond Wallace, Patrick Pichon, Phyllis Ayo, Tony O’Banion, Dean Roberts, Glenda Gay, Mary Fontenot, Billy Breaux, Betty Washington, and Shawn Baumgarten. The minutes of the September 12, 2023 meeting were approved on a unanimous vote. The superintendent’s report was read by Dr. LaFargue. The superintendent referred to the annual population report, which included the number of new and graduating students across Calcasieu parish, a comprehensive report on the CPSB annual audit, and a hurricane funding status report.
Presentations | A docu-video, to recognize Vinton High’s Custodian, Martin Payne was shown to the CPSB members and the citizens of Lake Charles, who attended the meeting. The video showed how the students, faculty, and staff have grown to love and respect their school, with the help of Mr. Payne’s consistency and positive attitude.
