TriVersity is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), organization serving the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) and Ally community of Pike/Wayne/ Monroe Counties in PA, Sussex County in NJ and Orange/Sullivan Counties in NY. TriVersity, Center for Gender and Sexual Diversity, strives to provide a safe, comfortable and inviting place for the LGBTQ community to meet, socialize and network. The Center serves as the social and cultural epicenter for the LGBTQ community. In addition to providing a positive environment, TriVersity seeks to improve the wellbeing of LGBTQ people in our community by providing programs and activities. Furthermore, the Center seeks to strengthen the connection between the LGBTQ community and the entire community by fostering diversity, tolerance, and greater understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. The Center celebrates and takes pride in LGBTQ identities while working to build community through events and education that in effect will empower all. The Center particularly works to help through addressing heterosexism, homophobia, and transphobia. In the last few years our community rode a wave of some of the most phenomenal progress the LGBTQ movement could ever have imagined. In addition to winning the

freedom to marry, the Secretary of Defense vowed to allow transgender people to serve openly in the military, the former Secretary of the Army was openly gay, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) ruled that discrimination against LGBTQ people is sex discrimination, and even the Pope suggested that LGBTQ people should not be judged! About Us... TriVersity is a 501c3 nonprofit agency that was incorporated in the state of Pennsylvania in 2009. Since that time, we have been providing services that welcome, support and empower the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community living in and visiting the tri-state region. In 2012, we opened our doors to become the first LGBTQ center in Northeastern PA. The aesthetically pleasing rural nature of the tri-state area along the Delaware river and its proximity to New York City has attracted a large number of visitors and NYC ‘transplants’ who have brought diversity, particularly in regards to the LGBTQ community, to an otherwise fairly homogeneous area. In fact, Pike County, PA currently has one of the highest proportion of same sex coupled households in the State of Pennsylvania (December, 2007, Census Snapshot by The Williams Institute). In spite of this, there have been few resources for the LGBTQ population. Throughout the initial phases of development of TriVersity time had been spent talking to members of the local LGBTQ community in an effort to determine needs. Repeatedly, one issue that had risen to the surface was; “Where do you meet people?’’. One lesbian mother shared, “I keep telling my daughters that there are other kids who also have two moms, but to be honest, I have no idea where to meet them.” Feelings of isolation, lack of programs and services and generalized homophobia were the driving forces of TriVersity. Today, TriVersity offers social, supportive and educational services focusing on the needs of LGBTQ adults, couples, teens, families, allies and the community at large. As we continue to grow we remain committed to meeting the ever changing needs of our community and remain open to new ideas, members and programs that will allow us to grow as an organization.

Our New Name: TriVersity, Formerly The Upper Delaware GLBT Center

We have changed our name but not our mission. A name helps to define an organization and our name clearly plays a role in establishing our value to all people based on sexual and gender diversity as well as to our straight allies. Our new name helps place clear emphasis on our vision to serve all no matter how they identify. As both sexuality and gender fall on a spectrum, many people do not identify with the LGBTQ tag. Our new name puts us at the forefront of a change that is happening rapidly and indicates that we are a safe and welcoming space for all. One factor for changing our name is closing a perception gap that we are here to provide services and events only to the Upper Delaware area in Pike County when we attract and work with individuals in the tristate area. Also, many see us as only events, this will be a way to rebrand our services as well. Why TRIVERSITY? TRI implies three and the balance of our new name indicates diversity. TRI describes us in many ways: the geographic areas we work in (three states; PA, NJ and NY); that we advocate for social change

that embraces diversity and eliminates oppression based on sexual orientation, gender identity and we include our straight allies who complete our community; and a philosophy that includes three key words - ACCEPTANCE, SUPPORT and EMPOWERMENT which we believe strengthens us as individuals and community. Also, the TRIangle has long been associated with our community. As many of you are aware we held a contest for our new name. While none of the names were chosen, the submissions were narrowed down by our Board and the discussion of the names submitted along with the reasons behind them were the basis of us creating this new name, which was a suggestion of Wendy Kaplan. Our corporate name will continue to be The Upper Delaware LGBTQ Center, Inc. and will continue to be visible as we value our rich history and the vision that our founders, especially our former Executive Director, Patty Tomaszewski, had for the organization. The Prom Ask any adult about their prom and you will get responses as varied as the individuals. “It was great. It was awful. My date was my cousin. My parents made me take so and so. I was the prom queen/king. Nobody asked me. Nobody asked me to dance. I didn’t go.” And the horror that could have been your prom memories are forever burned in our minds by the images portrayed in the movie “Carrie”. For all of life’s many disappointing moments, one that ranks among the highest is your prom. If you were a young adult in the 60’s through the early 2000’s or currently, more specifically a lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender or Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) teen, your journey had an added layer that was different than any of your peers. Your response is more likely to include “I didn’t/couldn’t go with the person I really wanted to”. Or “I didn’t get to go as the person I actually am.” While there are changing attitudes and openness about our LGBTQ youth and adults, many are still having to endure fierce hatred, homophobia or transphobia because of their decision to live their truth. Instead of a loving and supportive network, many of our younger people are faced with being thrown out of their home to live on the street. They are threatened with violence because some adult in their life wants to beat the gay out of them. Many feel they can no longer endure this pressure, and turn to any means

of escape including self-mutilation, drugs, alcohol and other substances. Far too many attempt and, tragically, succeed in taking their own lives, as they believe this is their only out. And some resort to violence aimed at the ones who are tormenting them. All of this is tragic and unnecessary. We wanted to create an event free of all the silly, but usual, expectations at a traditional prom, such as the pressure to fit in and be the most popular; being judged about how tall or short you were, how skinny or large you were; did you wear the wrong dress or tuxedo. Or worse, feeling isolated in a crowd with people saying look at that LGBTQ kid. This event is now known as simply “THE Prom”. Because this is The Prom to attend. Because everyone deserves to have The

“A Prom For All Ages” Prom they always wanted. As the person they always should have been. With the person they wanted to experience it with. Among friends and soon to be friends, and people who are there to support you, not judge you. And what makes it even more special is that it is The Prom for All Ages. A Celebration of our LGBTQ friends and family and our allies. That first year the theme was “Over the Rainbow”. We had a yellow brick road, rainbow arches and even some ruby slippers. Everyone who attended danced the night away. Adults who came were so impressed by the young adults who were there, and the young people were so appreciative of the support of the adults. We wanted to include people of all ages to show our young LGBTQ adults that it can get better now. Just as varied as a rainbow, those who attended were straight and LGBTQ. Who was single or married, have been together ten, twenty, thirty or more years. A cross section of humanity - over

one hundred individuals, all in one room, having the time of their life. Over the next few years we had themes such as “Mad Hatter Tea Party”, a “Circus Carnival” and “Hooray for Hollywood.” Most attendees dressed to fit the theme of each years Prom. Another important element is that NO ONE is turned away due to a lack of funds – we work out what is needed to ensure full inclusiveness. The best costume of the night? The SMILES that everyone was wearing. You couldn’t turn around without seeing smiles everywhere. You can feel the hearts and love of those in attendance. To say this event has become a success would not do it justice. In 2016 there were over 260 who attended from as far away as Maryland, South Jersey and Upstate New York. How many adults can say I attend The Prom every year? If you have not yet experienced The Prom, we hope you will join us next year for a truly amazing event.

TriVersity Events & Programs YOUTH PROGRAMS P3 which stands for People Promoting Pride is the name of our youth contingent. P3’s adage is “MAKING IT BETTER NOW,” a slight variation on the It Gets Better Campaign as we want our youth, both LGBTQ and Allies, to find ways to improve their situations now. The following are our programs that all meet at our Center. P3 EXPRESSIONS – an innovative program where our youth can freely express and release emotions through art; they convey what some cannot verbally articulate (ages 14 to 22). P3 DISCUSSION GROUP – provides a place to meet, get support, receive acceptance and to talk to other teens in a safe environment (ages 14 to 18). P3 VOICES – enables participants to share feelings and issues through sociodrama. A sociodrama is a dramatic play in which individuals act out roles for the purpose of studying and remedying problems they are experiencing in living their truth in their everyday lives (ages 14 to 22). P3 VISIONS – provides a place to meet other young adults, ages 18 to 22. This group has no official structure – we take our cue from the participants as to what they want, i.e., discussion, play games, watch a movie, etc.

ADULT PROGRAMS PARENTS SUPPORT GATHERING – One of the most difficult and life changing statements a parent can hear is that of their child coming out to them. Parents often feel scared, angry, confused, hopeless, and very alone. Their hopes and dreams for their children are shaken and replaced with fears of discrimination, AIDS, and

stigma. If you are the parent of an LGBTQ adult/ child come share your journey and get support from others who are dealing with similar issues or who have already traveled the road you are on. HIV SUPPORT GATHERING – an HIV diagnosis can be very isolating, as many people feel they cannot share it or discuss how HIV affects their lives. This group is a safe and confidential way to share your feelings and possible issues with others that understand this very special journey. TRANSGENDER SUPPORT GATHERING – a group dedicated to the support of the entire transgender community. A place to share your unique journey and to hear how others are/or have traveled a similar path. SPOUSES/PARTNERS OF TRANSGENDER PEOPLE Explore the variety of complex issues you face in a safe and caring environment with others going through the same thing – whether you have chosen to remain, leave or are still questioning whether you can remain in the relationship.

I found out about The Prom through a very special guy two years ago. We ended up not going together but I still very much wanted to go. My high school prom memories were haunted by the violence. This was my chance at a Re-prom. It was absolutely AMAZING. Like one big extended family. The hall was classy as Hollywood should be. The attendees were dressed for the red carpet. Music and food were outstanding. The joy on the faces of the youth and seeing such smiles all night will always replace the old memories I carried for so long. In a world that often casts us out it’s nice to have something like this that helps us all feel safe and at home. I love all the New friends I have made over the past couple of years. God bless you all. I first discovered The Prom through the TriVersity youth group. Having a lesbian art teacher with kids she would know a good youth group. At first I was scared because I was afraid I wouldn’t be acceptable by other gays. But as soon as I got there with my friends. It was so satisfying seeing two older gentlemen being themselves and dancing together

and feeling comfortable being themselves. I definitely feel like attending next year. That day I used the girl’s bathroom for the first time. It just felt so much more comfortable than I ever felt in the men’s bathroom. My friends were so supportive and for once being passable didn’t matter. Being myself did. That’s what makes this Prom magical and unique to any other prom. I am Transgender and this year, I attended The Prom for the third consecutive year. I first found out about The Prom from a fellow attendee, whom I can now call my one of my best friends also told me about TriVersity in Milford, PA. Every year, my entire month of April is filled with anticipation. I scour the Internet searching for just the right dress / evening gown/ ball gown. The fact that there is a theme to The Prom only makes my search more delightful. As we are now existing in a society where being Transgender is a highly controversial and visible entity, we also have to contend with a higher degree of bigotry, prejudice, and sadly, often violence – just for being Transgender. There were six of us, and we just all really raved about it. We’ve been living in this area for about thirty years and we all agreed it was the classiest event we’ve gone to. Also, such a nice gesture for the young people to feel they have a place, and to really show them a very fun and classy time. Not a thing was left out, the decorations, the photo booth (was a riot), the food

was excellent, let’s not forget the delicious dessert, and the people were really nice and friendly. Just SUPER. I hope you took some time to recover. The work you did was just unbelievable, and I wanted you to know how much of a good (GREAT) time we had. We just hope you will invite us next year. I just know you are wonderful people to do all this. Sending you Peace and Love. Before any more time goes by, I wanted to “THANK YOU” and everyone that made The Prom, Hooray for Hollywood, a really fantastic time. It was great from top to bottom start to finish. I had another wonderful time! This was my third time attending with friends and we had the best time! It is SUCH a joy to see the happiness on all the kids faces, it’s priceless. The DJ, as always, plays the best dance music. I think I burned a hole on the dance floor... This Prom is definitely one of the absolute highlights of my year and I will continue to go as long as you all continue to make them happen. Kudos to the organizers for planning and executing a very lovely and wonderful event!

This sheltered and protected surrounding is a blessing. Back then, the term “Transgender” wasn’t even thought of. There were literally NO resources available to me to find much needed answers. One of the things I find so attractive about TriVersity is that they provide help, resources, and support for the younger generation of the GLBT community. The people whom I have met over the past few years are now some of my best friends. I am already looking forward to next year’s event and I can NOT wait to discover what the theme will be!
