Hung Hom

Hundreds of Black Kites, whick are originally migratory birds, choose to be permanent residents in Hong Kong. Urban development unconsciously nourishes a brand new ecosystem for them. The freight yard in Hung Hom collects food waste from domestic collection points, flesh attracts kites to circle around for food, which turns the pedestrian bridge into a bird watching promenade. Rather than hiding these unpleasant landfill at the back of the society, it should be revealed for visitors to see the “real nature.

THE SPROUT OF THE NEGLECTED Safari SZHK | The University of Nottingham Year 3

THE SPROUT OF THE NEGLECTED

Planting

is a long term investment, and sprouting of the seed is merely the start of the whole ordeal. Ilkeston, the once thriving coal mining town, has been left to grow stale ever since the end of the Second World War. This project aims at rebooting the town via various infrastructures which will be built. There are several different aspects that the project intends to achieve, including revitalizing the local area, refreshing the locals of their past and revegetation of the area.

Refreshing the locals of their past

The design attempted to use the five senses, like sounds, echoes, smell and texture to stimulate the inhabitavnts with their personal memories to the environment existed in old Ilkeston. As people normally resist the indifferent changes to their familiar landscape, the project therefore aimed at reforming the site back into the familiar face the locals are used to.

Revitalizing the local area

Through redeveloping the train station of Ilkeston, the project aims to re-establish the worth of Ilkeston and to introduce Ilkeston as a relay point for travelers around the country. Also, the station would be able to reduce congestion on local roads (particularly to Nottingham), which will in turn improve access to jobs, training and education for Ilkeston residents and attract more investments into the town.

SHELTER OF MEMORY The University of Nottingham Year 3

Memory

is abstract ‘substance’ to be discussed in a rational debate. However, it is in fact the most realistic ‘substance’ that we uniquely possess. The Shelter of Memory makes use of the memories of the five senses of local community to reveal their emotions towards the old railway, like the echos of trains passing by, the smell of smoke and fuels and the vibration of the rail tracks. Not only those possess memories of the railway, visitors from outside Ilkeston can also feel the pressure of the train passing extremely close by their own experiences when reacting with the structure.

SHELTER OF MEMORY

ST PANCRAS CRUSING CLUBHOUSE The University of Nottingham Year 2

While the St Pancras canal started as a place used widely for industrial transportation of goods, faster more developed transportation later took over this duty and left the canal transformed into a place for recreational boating purposes. St Pancras Cruising club (SPCC) has occupied the Yacht basin since 1958 and provides narrow boats for visitors. Currently, under threat of being engulfed by its neighbouring nature reserve and unable to keep up with the ‘modern city,’ the canal club is seeking the wisdom of designers to update their status and preserve some of their history. The main aim is to re-introduce the club to its surrounding context via means of creating a community based on the respect of nature.
