Refugee settlements designed by architects mostly remain temporary. This thesis examines how temporary structures can be transformed and developed, as funds become available, to become permanent. It investigates a way of strengthening the original structure, and replacing other structural features with new materials. ` The project site is in Yangon, where thousands of squatters live around the periphery. These people do not own the land they live on and their settlements remain ‘temporary’ to allow them to continue to be seen as squatters in the view of the government. Over time, these squatters may have opportunities to access better materials and upgrade the houses they live in. The thesis proposes a design for a primary bamboo structure, which can be protected by a layer of brickwork. When funds or resources become available, concrete can be cast into the cavity of the brickwork, while the bamboo will serve as reinforcement against earthquakes.

The University of Hong Kong Year 4 | Vertical Void: Metropolitan Courtyard
METROPOLITAN COURTYARD 城中隙
Hong Kong is a hyper-dense metropolis filled with skyscrapers. The project scrutinises the voids in the city, to evaluate their spatial and architectural possibilities. Proposing that urban living is dependent on the quality of these voids; the project embraces a series of actions that postulates an alternative urbanism to the generic podium towers in Kennedy Town. 22
CARVING THE PODIUM TO STEP UP 裙樓後移術與樓上店 (MAISON DU NORD) (采逸軒) High rent of ground level shop-front facing to main streets eliminates the survival of many smaller local business. Therefore, linkage of neightbouring podiums open up an elevated ‘backstreet’ on the upper floor, which provides opportunities for shop-fronts with lower rent.

Hundreds of Black Kites, which are originally migratory birds, choose to be permanent residents in Hong Kong. Urban development unconsciously nourishes a brand new ecosystem for them. The freight yard in Hung Hom collects food waste from domestic collection points, flesh attracts kites to circle around for food, which turns the pedestrian bridge into a bird watching promenade. Rather than hiding these unpleasant landfill at the back of the society, it should be revealed for visitors to see the “real nature.

The University of Nottingham Year 3 | Shelter of Memory
SHELTER OF MEMORY Memory is abstract ‘substance’ to be discussed in a rational debate. However, it is in fact the most realistic ‘substance’ that we uniquely possess. The Shelter of Memory makes use of the memories of the five senses of local community to reveal their emotions towards the old railway, like the echo of trains passing by, the smell of smoke and fuels and the vibration of the rail tracks. Not only those possess memories of the railway, visitors from outside Ilkeston can also feel the pressure of the train passing extremely close by their own experiences when reacting with the structure.

The University of Nottingham Year 2 | St. Pancras Cruising Clubhouse
ST. PANCRAS CRUISING CLUBHOUSE While the St Pancras canal started as a place used widely for industrial transportation of goods, faster more developed transportation later took over this duty and left the canal transformed into a place for recreational boating purposes. St Pancras Cruising club (SPCC) has occupied the Yacht basin since 1958 and provides narrow boats for visitors. Currently, under threat of being engulfed by its neighbouring nature reserve and unable to keep up with the ‘modern city,’ the canal club is seeking the wisdom of designers to update their status and preserve some of their history. The main aim is to re-introduce the club to its surrounding context via means of creating a community based on the respect of nature.
