ECCN Number: Meaning, Structure And How To Find It ECCN is an acronym for Export Control Classification Number and is used explicitly to identify products or goods subject to export control rules of a country. Apart from ECCN, the other commercially traded goods have an EAR99 rating, which means that the goods are not being shipped to a sanctioned country. They are also not shipped to a denied party, prohibited entity, or a sanctioned country end-user. More or less, the exporters do not require a specific license for those products. On the other hand, all those products with an ECCN issued fall in the former category. The exporter needs to take thorough precautions while looking at the rules and regulations and get the relevant license before going ahead with the export. Now that we know What is an ECCN number, let us find out about its format. Structure Of ECCN An ECCN is a five-character alpha-numeric code. A typical example of an ECCN could be 1C002. Let us now understand what each character means: 1. The starting digit denotes the CCL category into which the product falls. Overall, there are ten such categories from which you can choose according to the product. Therefore, an ECCN starting with digit one would be chemicals, whereas the ECCN beginning with three would be for electronic equipment and components. 2. Followed by the first digit, we see an alphabet, which represents the product group. Again, there are five different product categories. For example, there are various character codes for systems, software, materials, etc. Following are the five product groups, each represented by a different English alphabet: a. Systems, equipment, and components b. Tests, inspections, and production equipment c. Material d. Software e. Technology 3. Then, there are final digits representing reasons for export control on the particular product or item to the specific destination. Difference Between ECCN And Schedule B Despite knowing what is an ECCN number, many people often confuse it with

schedule B. Schedule B numbers are nothing but codes issued by the United States census bureau to keep track of the trade statistics. They also measure volumes and value of exports that go out of the country using the schedule B codes. How To Find ECCN Number? There are different ways to find your ECCN number. Let us look at the available options: ● Contact the manufacturer, as they might be having an assigned ECCN for the particular products in most cases ● A better way is by referring to the commerce control list, where you can scan the categories to which ECCN suits or fits your product appropriately. ● You can request an ECCN online through ERIC, i.e., an electronic request for the item classification process. If you want to send a request, go to the BIS website and obtain your PIN to start the online application. ● You can also write to BIS requesting your ECCN by using the multipurpose application form of BIS, i.e., BIS-748P. Please note that this process can take up to a month, so it is better to apply with sufficient margin time. How Can Data Intelligence Help?
