JORDAN Replacing Poverty and Oppression with Opportunity and Hope Like Alia, shown here, many of the Jordanian women working as artisans for Trades of Hope have been divorced, orphaned, widowed, or married to a man with many wives. Viewed as second-class citizens, it has been a struggle to provide for their families’ needs. By creating beautiful jewelry from recycled products, these women 11
are generating an income for their families as they find their own worth. They use items that would normally be discarded or seen as having no value and turn them into something beautiful. It is a striking analogy of the transformed lives women like Alia are now leading through the opportunity they’ve been given.

In Thailand, women in rural villages lack employment options: they can either do laborious farm work or leave their villages for extended periods of time in order to provide for their families. By working as an artisan, mothers are now able to work from home by their families’ sides while earning a livable wage. They no longer must sacrifice time with their children in order to feed and clothe them.

Alice’s Story “My name is Alice, and I assemble jewelry. I’m happy doing this work because I feel free. I feel like a person! Also, my work has helped me financially. Now, I can eat whatever I want and whenever I want. I can also save money. I even have a family! I have an adopted daughter who is in school. I pay for her school fees. It is not good for people who are disabled in Kenya. They are treated poorly. We appreciate those who buy our jewelry so much because you support us! Please continue to shop our pieces so more people who are disabled can stop begging on the street.”

We partner with Katie Davis Majors, author of Kisses from Katie and Daring to Hope, who started an artisan group in Uganda in 2010. Our partnership helps her impact thousands of lives through education, nutrition, medical care, discipleship and community-building programs. By partnering with this Ugandan 23
beading circle, Trades of Hope provides vulnerable women a means to earn a sustainable income for their families. We are honored to bring hope and encouragement to communities rising above their circumstances.

Meet Mae Mae is an artisan in Asia whose parents thought it a waste of time and money for girls to be educated. Only her brothers went to school so Mae would stand outside the school gates, listening and wishing she could learn too. Mae was trafficked into brothels to help support her family. Other girls had also been sent by their families. None of them had imagined being forced into prostitution. 24
One day a visitor came and told her how she could create jewelry for Trades of Hope and earn an honorable living. Mae accepted the offer and is now living in a safe, clean shelter where she is fed and given medical care. Her childhood dreams are now coming true as she has learned to read, write, use computers and is currently learning English. She is so thankful to receive an education, but also to be treated as a gifted woman of purpose who sees her worth for the first time.
