Many women around the world are born into devastating poverty. They are living in slums, working in sweatshops, and victimized in the sex trade. These women are daughters, mothers, and our sisters. They don’t want charity. They want an opportunity.
Going to Haiti helped me to better understand how the work we do—marketing and selling our artisans’ products —impacts the lives of people who need our help. Giving them a sustainable income offers them opportunity, security, and a dignity that charity could not.
Trades of Hope offers the opportunity that they need to improve their own lives and the lives of their children by marketing their hand-made products. They are like us—they want to feed, educate, and care for their families. Trades of Hope offers sustainable, long-term, multi-generational change. Trades of Hope is helping women out of the sex trade in Bangladesh and helping mothers keep their babies in Haiti. We are working with artisans in the mountains of Nepal and seaside villages in the Philippines. The approximately 15 artisan groups with which we work cover 4 continents. Once a week, Katie goes to the slum community of Masese, Uganda, to meet with the women of a mother’s beading circle. She builds relationships with the women, leads them in a Bible study, and purchases their necklaces—beautiful, brightly colored beads made from paper and strung into long unique strings. She also assists in giving them money management training. More than 30 women are now able to feed their families, send their children to school, purchase plots of land, and build homes. Money received from the sale of the necklaces also funds a feeding program in Masese that serves more than 1,200 children each weekday. This self-sustaining vocational program gives hope and a future for families in this Uganda community.
