I must say that I felt a bit of pressure. A few hours represented all of the time available to us and success was not exactly guaranteed.

Our first responsibility was to go out and catch a snapper suitable for tagging. Once released and if caught during the competition the fish would return to the successful angler $100,000.
We consistently get our biggest fish on soft baits so with the assistance of a drogue or sea anchor we set off on a lengthy drift and in reasonable time had a three kilo snapper tagged and safely returned to the water.
When it comes to targeting huge snapper my preferred approach is burley and live baits usually yellow tail. Sometimes I will take a fresh live bait and butterfly it. In this case you take most of the fillet on both sides off the backbone but leave the head attached. In other words you wind up with the head attached to two big fleshy flaps and using a double hook rig insert one hook through the bottom jaw and out the top and the second hook back where the belly would be, fresh, succulent and irresistible.

The consensus was to catch enough for a feed and this was done with the soft baits out fishing conventional pilchards and squid two to one. Although we experimented with a variety of colours, the nuclear chicken five inch jerk shad did the damage. Some of the serious competition anglers were using burley days in advance in the hope of enticing a big snapper to their patch while others with good local knowledge
If I have one of these in the water at change of light, early morning and late afternoon, plus a live bait and nothing happens when the sun hits the horizon then I will throw in a soft bait sometimes with devastating effect, even though I am at anchor and burleying up. Whether you are fishing for the big tournament winning fish or just out to land a good feed early morning and late evening are clearly great times to hunt. Good luck! Tight Lines!
