In the north the big snapper arrived and this is the time I seriously target big beasts and hunt down other species like kingfish. This period is like a breath of fresh air in many ways, the days start to lengthen and the breeze loses its edge and assumes that warm gentle caress we associate with summer. It is also a time when baits, live or fresh dead baits, can be lethal although by the end of November soft bait fishing will be hotting up and slow jigs such as the Prowler range will come in to their own.

To stop the ball sinker from riding up the trace I tie a rubber band round the line and slide the band on top of the sinker and push both until they connect with the bait.
This week, half an hour before I left home, my neighbour dropped in a dozen fresh mullet. Within an hour they were being scaled and cut in to long strip baits before plunging in to the Tiri Channel.
The trick then is to spool your bait in to your burley trail (if you are at anchor) and let the spool glide under your thumb. It’s all about natural presentation and any snapper worth having will be all over that
At times the take can be tentative and that means modifying your approach. Feel the take and hit them hard straight away. This is the sort of fishing I really enjoy. It often produces good sized fish and harks back to the days before soft baits and slow jigs.
We didn’t even anchor, just drifted from school to school. From what I have seen we are in for a good summer. It looks as though the fish are moving in early and the water temperature is higher than it was at the same time last year. Start with your trusty old bait but prepare for the thrill that accompanies soft baiting. Pretty soon it will be all on. Have a great summer! Tight Lines!
