LOCAL NEWS Ph: 0488 754 816 Anchors away for Sailability Bundaberg Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett and Sports and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson recently visited Sailability Bundaberg to see them back on track since the destruction caused by the heavy rains and flooding following ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald in January 2013. Mr Bennett said the Queensland Government was proud to provide the club with more than $12,500 through the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery program to help them get back on course. “It’s great to see first-hand the positive impact this funding has made for this club, including its members and volunteers,” he said. “Sailability Bundaberg lost a significant amount of equipment in the flood waters, including a tow vehicle, first-aid kits, storage containers, life jackets and sports equipment. “Sport and recreation clubs are an important part of our local communities so it’s been fantastic to see clubs like Sailability Bundaberg doing so well again,” he said. Minister Steve Dickson said over the past few years a large number of sport and recreation clubs in Queensland had been impacted by strong winds, floodwaters and torrential rain. “We will continue to support our local sport and recreation clubs where possible, to get them back on track during difficult times. “We believe participation and success begin with a
strong focus on grassroots sport and recreation. “It is the reason the government introduced the Get in the Game initiative. “Get in the Game involves three funding programs Get Started, Get Going and Get Playing, worth $47.8 million over three years. “These programs not only provide clubs with better equipment and facilities, but also give children who might not otherwise be able to afford it the opportunity to play sport,” Mr Dickson said.

Businesses and organisations across the region can register now for the March workshops of Council’s Bundaberg Digital Enterprise Program. Economic Development portfolio spokesperson Cr Greg Barnes said the program aimed to help small to medium sized businesses and not-for-profit organisations maximise opportunities from greater digital engagement. “Council is pleased to assist in delivering these free workshops which are about working with the local business community to grow our region’s economy,” Cr Barnes said. “Due to their popularity, I urge interested business owners to register as soon as possible. In this day and age all businesses and organisations should be taking advantage of the digital economy.” Workshops to be held in Bundaberg include: Cloud and Cloud applications - March 10, 4pm to 7pm at Bundaberg Business Enterprise Centre, corner Quay and Tantitha Street. Mobility, Teleworking and Online Communications – March 11, 9am to 12pm at Bundaberg Regional Council Training Facility, 78 Woongarra Street. The Digital Enterprise Program, continuing until August 2015, is funded by the Australian Government and

Complete Denture Solutions Your Dentures Should Not Cause You Pain

Not all dentures are the same. One thing that is the same, is your dentures should not cause you pain. If your denture is causing pain, it may require something as simple as an adjustment to the denture or the solution may be more involved. The alveolar ridge (bony ridge) is the supporting structure on which your denture is made. Any change to this structure can lead to change in the way your dentures function. From the moment your natural teeth are removed, the remaining bony ridge will undergo change now that it is no longer supporting teeth. The ridge begins a process called ‘resorption’. This process involves the body reabsorbing some of the bony ridge after tooth loss. It is a natural process and the rate of resorption is different in every case. When you are fitted for dentures they will fit the ridges at the time of issue. From that point onward there will be ongoing change to the ridges. Resorption of the bony ridge is a slow process and usually goes undetected by the denture wearer until such time as the denture exhibits a change in behaviour. This change may include symptoms such as: pain, food getting under the denture or the denture becoming loose. A denture exhibiting behavioural change may require something as simple as a reline to solve the problem. A reline involves adding a new fitting surface to your denture to re-fit the denture to any changes caused by resorption. This process is a same day procedure requiring you to leave your denture with us in the morning and having the completed denture inserted that afternoon. A denture causing pain in the early stages of its life may require adjusting rather than relining. An adjustment can be as simple as a fifteen minute appointment but give endless relief to a painful situation. Resorption is so slow that this should not be an issue for a young denture. Council flood mitigation options sent to Minister
As part of the Burnett River Floodplain Action Plan, Bundaberg Regional Council has forwarded its recommendations for the priority flood mitigation projects and other strategies to the Minister for Local Government, Community Recovery and Resilience, David Crisafulli for funding consideration. The options cover four categories, including flood mitigation projects, life-threatening evacuation routes, isolation reducing evacuation routes and other flood management measures. Mayor, Cr Mal Forman said the confirmed projects focussed on preserving human-life in a large-scale flood event and reducing the impacts of above floor level flooding whilst being financially responsible. “We believe the mix of measures recommended will provide the greatest improvement to flood resilience and preparedness for the region. “This is an ambitious list in terms of the costs but we believe this is a very strong list of projects which we know will provide enormous benefits to the region. “As part of this process, Council assessed the options put forward in two floodplain recommendation reports by the Community Reference Group (CRG) and engineering firm GHD,” Cr Forman said. “The CRG report assessed 328 ideas put forward by the community during an extensive Burnett River Floodplain Action Plan public consultation program held across the region last year. “GHD then worked with the CRG to include this feedback into their Preliminary Options Assessment Report which looked at over 40 different measures, including 20 large-scale flood mitigation projects based on sound engineering and scientific principle. “Council made every effort to ensure the process

The January flood was the largest in recorded history and affected over 6,500 properties. As a Council, we spent many hours discussing and analysing each recommendation. It was a very important task and one that simply does not happen overnight. We’d like to thank the public for their patience while we worked to provide the State Government with the very best options for the entire community,” he said. “We’ve advised Minister Crisafulli that the mitigation projects above would require significant Government assistance in order to be facilitated and we considered this when putting forward our suggestions.” Cr Forman said while Council provided concept designs for each recommendation, further detailed investigation would be required before any option was implemented. Construction starts on new Elliott Heads’ kiosk
Construction has officially begun on a new $700,000 kiosk on the Elliott Heads foreshore. Elliott Heads Divisional Representative Cr Danny Rowleson said the new kiosk was the first of many exciting changes planned for the area. “By now residents would have noticed a number of changes around the foreshore area. The construction fences have gone up, workman and machinery were on site and work is well and truly underway on the new kiosk facility,” Cr Rowleson said. Cr Rowleson said the impressive new facility would replace the existing foreshore kiosk on Lihs Street. “An independent engineering and building inspection of the existing kiosk recommended that a new purpose built structure was the preferred solution to ongoing repairs and maintenance,” he said. “The existing kiosk will be demolished, along with the nearby concrete rotunda, once the new facility is completed. An inspection of the rotunda, which housed dining tables and chairs, found that metal inside the concrete frame had suffered severe rusting and posed a safety risk. “Interestingly, the new kiosk is located on the site of a kiosk that operated in the same location back in the 1940s and 1950s.” “Once the old kiosk is removed, it will open up the ocean vista whilst placing a focus on the Elliott Heads Lifesaving Club. Plans to construct a viewing desk in that location are on the cards.” In addition to the new kiosk, Cr Rowleson said Council was adding a new roof to an existing public BBQ facility located near the site of the new kiosk on the foreshore area. However, he was quick to point out that the existing car park space near the kiosk would not be removed. “At this stage, the car park won’t be removed. We are simply adding line marking and disable spots where the existing ones are.” He said the new kiosk was expected to be completed by June. “Council conducted a construction tender for a new kiosk and nearby amenities block at the Elliott Heads Foreshore late last year. LOCAL NEWS Ph: 0488 754 816 Tourists make tracks to Bundy for turtle season Visitors from across the nation have been encouraged to join the bumper crowds already experiencing turtle nesting season, at the Mon Repos Conservation Park on the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey and Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said more than 20,000 visitors have witnessed the awe-inspiring encounter so far, helping deliver on the Newman Government election promise to grow tourism as one of the four pillars of the economy. “February and March are a terrific time for visitors to see the turtle hatchlings dash into the waters of the Coral Sea to begin their life journey on the Southern Great Barrier Reef,” Ms Stuckey said. “There is no better place in Australia to experience this remarkable natural encounter than in Bundaberg, home to the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on Australia’s east coast occurring at Mon Repos.” Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett said the success of this season showed that visitors appreciated the special opportunity Mon Repos

Bundaberg North Burnett Tourism General Manager Rick Matkowski said the turtle season was back stronger than ever and was playing a vital role in the region’s recovery. “Over the next few weeks, thousands of turtle hatchlings will make their way from their Mon Repos nests to the ocean providing a memorable experience for our visitors, young and old,” Mr Matkowski said. National Parks Minister, Steve Dickson said the Mon Repos turtle rookery, run by the Queensland Park and Wildlife Service provided a world-class eco-tourism experience. “Mon Repos allows visitors to see the most significant concentration of nesting marine turtles on Australia’s east coast,” Mr Dickson said. MONTHLY FISHING UPDATE February was a little kinder to us than previous months, with a few good days which allowed many boats to get outside, which they did with great success. Friday the 13th they say is unlucky for some, but as far as a fishing trip it turned out to be the best day of the whole month with wind and tides being spot on. If the reports, that I received, were accurate (which most are) many readers of this column had a ball with most areas producing real good fish. The 19mile produced, and is still producing, good catches of Trevally, Parrot, Nannygai, Grassy Sweetlip and some nice sized Hussar. Most of the Northern Gutters are also fishing well, the Bargon continues to fish well although, like the Althea, it is on one day and off the next with more misses than hits. I think this is because every man and his dog heads there first. Also fishing well is the Artificial or the Two Mile, as it’s sometimes called, I like to refer to it as Cochran’s Reef and I think everyone else should. Alan Cochran and his wife spent a lifetime of dedication and very hard work, to give us a fantastic place to fish and observe a reef in very close to Bundaberg and the East Coast. The only fault with this spot is as soon as it starts to breed up out come the spear fishermen/women and clean it out in just a few short weeks, but at the moment it is fishing OK with some good Mackerel hunting round it. There are Spotted Mackerel around the last two leaders from the Burnett with the odd Spanish showing up. Be careful though, some of the bigger Spanish that have been caught have given people Ciguatera poisoning, it won’t kill you but will make you very ill with vomiting , burning sensation or skin pain with cold water contact, headaches, extreme itching and in extreme cases breathing difficulty. This is caused by large Mackerel eating a certain species of reef fish that feed on a certain species of Coral that is toxic to humans. So if you do catch a Spanish Mackerel and it’s over 6kg throw it back. Most of the rivers have been fishing okay, the Baffle is still producing nice sized Mangrove Jack on live bait, mainly Poddy Mullet and 3inch paddle tail, up near the rock ledges near the Ferry Crossing. Also in the system are nice sized Bream, Flathead and Whiting, mostly in the lower reaches around the mouth on an incoming tide. The Burnett is on and off with some nice Threadfin Salmon being caught in the deeper parts of the river mainly on large fresh prawn and at first light. You will need three rods, hot coffee and patience here, but be prepared when one bites you can be sure the other rods will go off as well. Try and throw the bigger females back as we are right in the middle of the breeding season for Salmon. Salmon where caught 15kms past the Bucca pub many years ago before they built 26 Weirs and Barrages plus a Dam on the Burnett. This river has the largest catchment area with the smallest tidal flow in Queensland. The Burnett also has some nice Bream
along the rock walls and Whiting and Flathead in and around Strathdees and the mouth. The Kolan is about the same as The Burnett with both rivers serving up a good feed of Mud Crabs so don’t forget to pack a couple of pots. The Elliott River has some nice sized Whiting using beach worm and chopped prawn. Good sized Mangrove Jack are still on the chew but fish in and around fallen trees, this seems to be their preferred hiding places. The Burrum is about on par with the Elliott except there have been some really nice Flathead about the mouth and out towards the second leader. Since the lifting of the ban on Barramundi at the beginning of February, my spies inform me that some big Barra have been taken mainly on live bait from the Baffle, Burnett, Kolan and most rivers in the area. It seems that they are breeding up and stocks are getting back to what they used to be like. Let’s hope it continues. All the dams have picked up probably due to the drop in temperature and of course the time of year, our closest dam is the Monduran, most Barra being landed are around the 80cm mark with the odd one over a metre, but now and again a real rod bender will grab hold and you get that trophy fish. For the bigger ones try using the 4 or 5inch Gold Bomber or the Killalure range your pick on colour, and try around the trees or the Spindly Wattle. Don’t forget if you don’t have a boat and want to join a fishing club look to joining Bundaberg Sports Fishing Club. Members there are sometimes looking for crew to do a trip outside. All it costs you is a few dollars for petrol. You will meet and make new friends, have some great times and also hopefully help with tag and release plus we have a great fingerling release program you might like to get involved in. Tech Talk & Tips Recently I spoke about those phone calls we receive from people claiming to be from “Windows”. This past week most of Bundaberg has been receiving calls and emails that seem to be from Microsoft urging them to contact a phone number or email back their credit card details as they have serious problems on their computers. It seems to me that there are more and more people out there trying their best to rip us off. My advice is check with your local repair shop such as AMS Computers before you do anything. Never ever give your bankcard details to anyone and never ever give anyone you do not know access to your computer by remote access. By remote access I mean that your computer can be totally controlled by someone in say India, Pakistan, or Japan if you supply them with certain information they ask for. To make my point Steven from AMS Computers recently did a software update, a complete files clean-up, reset programs and removed certain unwanted or needed search engines for a business client in the UK, now until Steven closed off the program he was using the customer was unable to use his computer in any way at all. Steven had complete and total control of this computer from here in Australia to the UK. If you receive one of these emails just delete it and remember every computer will have some errors, how many depends on how long it has been since it last had a service. If you have errors call your local computer store. Check the bottom of this page and get a complete service and tune up for a mere $65 if you take in the voucher it’s $55 and if you are a pensioner you get 10% off, now that is so cheap. it’s ridiculous when you think of the money it can save you, your computer will be faster, it will last longer, spend less time being repaired, it’s a win, win situation all round. I checked out some prices on repairs recently, electrician $90 p/hour, plumber $95 p/hour, white goods repairs $88 p/hour, mechanic $95 p/hour, upholsterer $ 85 p/hour, AMS Computer technicians $65 p/hour. The programs offered to you on the internet such as registry cleaners and programs to speed up your PC are just not worth downloading and definitely not worth paying for. The only two programs free that I would recommend for the home user are “C – Cleaner” & “Malware Bytes”, both programs are free and can be run by the average home user without too much trouble. They need to be run every four to six weeks depending on how much you surf the internet. These programs can be accessed and downloaded from the internet. Another tip is do not have more than one Anti-Virus program installed at a time, otherwise they will fight each other and that is not good when
you are on the internet as this leads to corruptions and less than satisfactory protection. A lot of you out there are still struggling with Windows 8 and even the 8.1 update does not seem to have solved all or a lot of the issues it has. It seems that Windows 8 is going the same way as Vista did a while back, every time Windows 8 stuffs up, you are asked to report it to Windows; this is the way that Microsoft builds their programs. Instead of finishing it first and giving the program a rigorous testing, finding the faults, fix them, then release the program to the public and we become the testers. I would hazard a guess that eight out of 10 people I speak to do not like Windows 8 and find it very difficult to operate. Now when you are about to buy a new computer every place in town, especially the major stores, only sell new computers with a Windows 8 operating program, but all is not lost. AMS Computers has been able to acquire a good reliable supplier of Windows 7 which means AMS customers are assured of getting a reliable operating system that will have backup for possibly the next seven years. The techs at AMS are there to help you if you have any problems that are getting you down with trying to use these programs. Since Christmas people have returned from holidays, switched on their computers and it has frozen, or the same has happened after a few days, alternatively your computer has been switched off and then it has had a few Windows Updates and switched itself off, “DO NOT SWITCH YOUR COMPUTER OFF DURING UPDATES” now next time you switch on and it does not start, just leave it for up to 10 minutes as it could be resetting itself, this is fairly common, you will probably find that it will just come good. By switching off and on repeatedly you could corrupt Windows so just wait, let the computer think! If it is still unable to fire up take it to your local computer shop. AMS Computer Services now opens at 7.30am and closes at 5.30pm so workers can drop off and pick up conveniently. AMS does not open on Saturdays anymore. AMS Computers also has a very good Rental/ Lease arrangement, they build their own computers fully set them up so you can take them home and just plug them in and they also give a five year limited warranty. The workshop repairs all makes and brands of desktops, specialise in repairs to all makes of laptops, iPads and mobile phones. AMS Computers build them, sell them, and repair them when you have a problem they fix it, unlike other outlets they sell you the computer then when something happens they give you a phone number, you then send your computer away and “wait”.

Worm Farms are a fantastic way to save money, reduce organic waste, feed your soil and plants including potted plants. They are also a great way to get the kids involved and learn all about the workings of the unseen silent heroes of the earth/soil. Worms eat organic waste and turn it into natural liquid fertiliser and worm casting. With both of these products being used on the garden. You can look at buying a ready-made farm (there are plenty available) or it’s easy to make your own farm out of polystyrene vegetable or wooden boxes. You will need to place a good quality soil, leaves and shredded paper for the bed which needs to be about 15cm deep. This needs to be kept moist/damp NOT WET, covered and cool. Once you have it all set you can go and purchase your worms. They normally come in their thousands and you will need at least 1000 or 2000 worms to start with. To settle your worms in their new home gently spread them over the surface and watch them disappear as they burrow into their new bed. Remember to make sure they have enough bedding and keep your worm farm damp. When it comes to feeding your worms, it’s quite simple. They eat food scraps including vegetables (cut into small pieces), crushed egg shells, bread (broken up), tea leaves and fruit peelings. They also like small amounts of moistened cardboard and paper shredded up. Feed your worms regularly in small amounts in one place and cover the new food with a light covering of their bedding or a handful of compost or soil. This will encourage them to feed on what is on offer and helps them to break it down in a shorter amount of time. Only feed your worms when they have almost finished their last feed, also it is important not to place dairy (butter and cheese), meat, fish, fat and bones to your worm farm. They are not too keen on citrus peel, onions or garlic. Be careful of oils also as these can suffocate your little helpers. It is quite simple to collect the worm liquid and the castings. If your worm farm catches the liquid, empty the tray regularly using the tap. Dilute the liquid with water until it resembles weak tea and then you may water garden plants or pot plants. When it comes time to collect the castings this is quite simple also, all you will need to do is move the worms bedding to one side of the farm and add new/fresh bedding to the empty side, then wait a few days. Most of the worms should have moved over to the fresh bedding. Take the old bedding out and use it on your garden, it does not matter if you take a few worms as they will multiply in the farm and the ones being moved will love their new garden home and help improve your soil. You will also take worm eggs but once again don’t worry as these will hatch in your garden bed and live happily in your soil. Now you have your Worm Farm working for you, it’s time to set up a compost bin; this will help cut down your waste to landfill and help your garden and save you money. TASTY RECIPES Ingredients:
Easy Chocolate Recipes One Bowl Chocolate Cake 1 cup cold coffee (instant, filter or espresso) 1 cup milk 100ml vegetable oil 2 teaspoons vinegar
250g plain flour 400g caster sugar 75g cocoa 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 eggs
Method:
1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Grease and flour a 23x33cm cake tin. 2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Make a well in the centre and pour in the eggs, coffee, milk, oil and vinegar. Mix until smooth: the batter will be thin. 3. Pour into prepared tin and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool in the tin before slicing and serving.
Ingredients:
Chocolate Mousse
300g good-quality dark chocolate, roughly chopped 3 eggs 1/4 cup (55g) caster sugar 1 tablespoon good-quality cocoa powder, sifted 300ml thickened cream, plus extra whipped cream to serve Grated chocolate
Method:
1. Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of gently simmering water (don’t let the bowl touch the water). Stir until melted. Remove bowl from heat and set aside to cool slightly. 2. Place eggs and sugar in a large bowl and beat with electric beaters for 5 minutes, or until mixture is pale, thick and doubled in volume. Fold in cooled chocolate and cocoa powder until combined. 3. In a separate bowl, whip cream until thickened (be careful not to over-beat). Use a large metal spoon to carefully fold the cream into the chocolate mixture, trying to keep the mixture as light as possible. Spoon into 6 serving glasses and chill in fridge for at least 1 hour. Remove from fridge 15 minutes before serving, then top with extra whipped cream and grated chocolate to serve.

2 x 175g blocks of dark cooking chocolate 1 x 400g tin of sweetened condensedÂ
Method:
1. Break up the the dark cooking chocolate into a large microwave safe bowl, then pour over the sweetened condensed milk and add the butter. 2. Put in the microwave on 60% power for 3 mins. Once finished remove from the microwave and stir to combine. 3. Pour into a greased slice dish and put into the fridge to set for a minimum of 2 hours. 4. Slice and enjoy.
