Bamboo Trading Company’s Club Bags are hand made by artisans in the state of Uttar Padesh in India. This region of India is one of the poorest of poor. The families that work with us often support 4-5 family members and are landless laborers who are otherwise employed only during the sowing and harvest seasons. Each Club Bag purchase helps to lift families out of poverty. Every Club Bag makes a difference in these families’ lives.
Our Club Bags are hand embroidered and beaded by the women in individual homes. The women can make 4-5 Club Bags a day. Once the Club Bags are embroidered, tailors stitch them. Each tailor is encouraged to keep an apprentice that can learn the skills and become self-sufficient. After the stitching is completed, the bags go to the finishing department, where the bags are inspected, labeled and packed. Most workers have no formal training and depend on each other to learn the skills needed.
Our workers have hygienic surroundings, medical assistance and in some cases fees for children's education. They also have access to interest free loans for home repairs, elder care, medical needs and marriages (in India a big family expense).
The Club Bag Collection now supports almost 1000 people from the poorest sections of India. Our hope is that we can continue to help break the cycle of poverty by providing work and hope to these Artisans and their families ... stitch by stitch, bead by bead.

Clean water is foundational to every culture on earth. If you look closely you will discover that dirty water is at the root of infant mortality, malnutrition, illiteracy, disease and poverty in many countries. In Guatemala over half the population lives in poverty and there is a high risk of waterborne diseases. Safe drinking water is often not available in the rural areas of Guatemala, especially in the area of Sololá where most of our artisans live. Rural people draw water from the lake, rivers, streams, and ponds which is often contaminated with bacteria or disease. Clean water is a whole family concern. Finding clean water is a daily challenge for many Guatemalans. Providing reliable and safe water to a family can be life changing by lifting this burden and returning time for study and income generating work.
On our recent visit to Guatemala we met with HELPS INT representatives (www.helpsintl.org) as they demonstrated the Gravity Water Filter. The Gravity Water Filter is a practical solution to the need for safe drinking water, at a very accessible price. The water filter provides 10 gallons of safe drinking water in 24 hours. It is simple to use and the initial setup time is about 15 minutes. The Gravity Water Filter is specifically designed to micro-filter a supply of safe drinking water using a simple two container system. A person simply pours the water into the top container where it then filters into the lower container.
