The Trafford & Stockport College Group (TSCG) is one of the largest colleges in the region supporting over 15,000 students who choose to develop their skills with us, of which over 500 are in Higher Education.

The recent completion of our £23m campus development has allowed us to create dedicated spaces and resources for our Higher Education students while allowing access to the wider campus facilities and easy access to the town centre.

Many of our undergraduates come from Stockport and are passionate about the town they grew up in. They are local people with a pride in their community and a desire to succeed.

What was the favourite aspect of your course?

There were several aspects of the course that really impressed me. The well-structured curriculum combined with access to termly study schedules kept us informed of what we would be learning each week. The passion that our tutor, Andy, had for not only teaching us but wanting to strive for success in every aspect of our work was also a stand out for me.

What was your greatest challenge?

The greatest challenge was probably effectively managing my time juggling to complete the course work along with my day job which is about planning lessons, marking students’ work and planning for their assessments, all while balancing this with a home life that includes children and a new born baby!

What do you hope to do now?

I want to continue in my role as a mentor and a motor vehicle tutor and hopefully in the future progress within the college as well as obtain a Master’s Degree in Leadership & Management.

What was the favourite aspect of your course?

I liked the calm aspect of the study environment which enabled me to complete my degree course with its mix of practical and theory work which helped me to apply this to my job.

What was your greatest challenge?

My greatest challenge was studying on the course while holding down a full-time job, completing a UEFA B licence programme, and recovering from a ACL football injury!

What do you hope to do now?

I have now gained a new role working with both Manchester United and Liverpool football clubs as I continue to work within professional football coaching.

I found the most enjoyable part of my course to be when I got to experiment with both physical and digital art, trying out different art materials and forms like experimental film. I also looked forward to working on project briefs that had real-world applications.

Our Higher Education Student Support is made up of the following services:

HE Study+

HE Study+ is a programme of additional academic support for all students across Higher Education.

Students can access drop-in sessions every weekday as well as workshops focusing on a range of topics to help you through your programme of study.

Work based learning opportunities

Some of our courses have a requirement to undertake work placement hours and all of them will encourage and facilitate the acquisition of relevant work experience, so that you can apply your knowledge, and develop those skills and behaviours necessary in your chosen profession.

HE Disability and Support Service

The Higher Education Disability and Support Service offers information, advice and guidance for students with a variety of disabilities, including specific learning needs, such as mental health, physical and sensory requirements. The team can provide confidential advice and guidance to students regarding the support available through the College, and to also help those who wish to apply for Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs).

By becoming a student at the University Centre you will also have access to the following services and facilities found in Library+ to help and support you in your studies:

> You can get friendly help and support from professionally qualified librarians and library assistants. We can help you using our electronic resources and locate relevant information.

> We know how difficult it can be studying somewhere new, so we provide an induction which introduces you to our systems and facilities

> We also provide information skills sessions to help you understand how to use our resources and to develop your independent study skills

> There are a range of study spaces to suit everyone – so if you need to discuss your work, or work quietly on your own, Library+ has somewhere for you

> All our materials are held on our computerised catalogue which can be accessed 24/7. You can also reserve items and renew your loans online

> Our extensive IT facilities all offer internet access and Microsoft packages. There are laptops and tablets which can be borrowed and used in Library+. We also have specialist packages for you to use, including PaintShop Pro, Visual Basic and Photoshop

> There are photocopiers for you to use and we can also help you laminate and bind your coursework, adding a professional touch.

You may also have access to the libraries and resources of the awarding body of our university partners.

FUNDING YOUR DEGREE

As a higher education student there is a range of financial support options available. With nothing to pay up-front, low-cost government loans, and other support grants, financing your course may be easier than you think. We’ve included some of the key information you need to know.

Fees and Loans

Tuition Fee Loans

As a full-time or part-time student, you can apply for a loan to cover your tuition fees. Full-time and part-time students applying for a Higher Education course do not have to pay their tuition fees in advance. If you are eligible, your fees will be automatically paid to the College by the Student Loans Company. Maintenance Loans

You may also be eligible for a loan to help cover the cost of living as a student. You may have to give details of your household income when you apply as this can affect the amount you are given. This loan is paid directly to you in three instalments, which you will have to pay back after you finish studying. Repayments

The great thing about tuition fee and maintenance loans is that you only make repayments once you have completed your course and you’re earning over £25,000 a year. The amount you repay depends on your income, not what you have borrowed.

Financial Support

Our Higher Education tuition fees are lower than most UK universities’ fees and represent great value for money. We also offer extra financial support through bursaries and other funds.

Bursary Awards

The College offers a limited number of Bursary Awards made up of a cash grant of £500 for first year full-time students and £250 cash grant for first year part-time students. The awards are paid in February and May. Students are eligible if their household income is up to £25,000 and must demonstrate a commitment to study through attendance and engagement with study.

Am I Eligible for Additional Funding?

Funding is available to students on lower incomes to help meet costs associated with their course and coming to college, with several different options available, depending on the type and level of study.

Financial Support

Council Tax Exemption

Any full-time student aged 18 and over can also apply for Council Tax Exemption from their Local Authority. Council Tax Exemption Certificates are available from the Enrolment Booths within Student Services.

Adult Dependent Grant

Extra financial support is available to students with an adult who depends on your finances (this is usually your partner, parent, or grandparent but not adult children). You could be eligible for up to £3,354 per year, a grant that does not have to be paid back, and which is paid on top of your other student finance.

Disabled Student Allowance

Up to £26,291 is available to cover study related costs that a student may have because of a mental health problem, long term illness or any other disability. The amount awarded depends upon individual needs as opposed to household income, and the allowance is not paid back.

This Level 6 top-up course is validated by Sheffield Hallam University and offers a natural progression from the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing (Cyber Security) or a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in this subject area. Software Engineering is the design, implementation, and testing of complex software applications. In this course you will learn about the production of high quality, large-scale, enterprise-wide, and complex software applications.

This Level 6 top-up course is validated by Sheffield Hallam University and offers a natural progression from the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing (Software Engineering) or a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in this subject area. It will appeal to those who want to further develop skills in programming techniques, tools and processes, and the project management practices used to support and control such projects.

In the study of software architecture and design, you’ll apply principles of good design, usability, and security to software development. Using a practical approach, you’ll develop solutions evaluated against industry standards. In Semester 1, you’ll work in teams to design and support the development of IT projects through practical exercises.

In the second semester, the Secure Software Engineering module explores security objectives in large applications, including information security, cryptography, digital identity management, and access control and defence mechanisms. You’ll also complete a development project, creating a significant software deliverable under a project supervisor’s guidance, preparing you for the workplace or further study.

2 years. As a full-time student, you will attend one day per week, spend two days in an appropriate setting and use the remaining time for independent study. per year.

By linking current research and child development theory to professional practice, the course offers a professional development opportunity to those working in early years and childcare.

The combination of study with workplace learning offers an opportunity to link theory and practice, develop understanding of how children learn, and develop and explore aspects of social policy that affects children and their families.

Whilst the Postgraduate Certificate is suitable for those who have a UK first degree or equivalent, other applicants may be eligible to complete the Certificate in Education. Both routes enable students to acquire knowledge and develop skills to work in teaching in the lifelong learning sector, outside of schools.

Successful completion will provide students with a route to professional status for teachers in lifelong learning, Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.

In-service and pre-service

The Pre-Service pathway is for those with no experience of teaching and a willingness and opportunity to complete 250 hours of teaching on a placement, which must be arranged prior to starting the course. If you are already teaching within a training or education setting outside of the schools’ sector, the In-Service pathway is appropriate. Pre-service trainees may complete the course full time or part time. In service trainees complete part-time over two years.

Indicative content:

Research Informed Teaching, Learning and Assessment module which aims to develop your understanding of how people learn in the Lifelong Learning Sector. The role of assessment, theories and principles of learning and assessment are explored, and students will apply research-informed approaches to the design of effective teaching and learning strategies. You will study positive approaches to the management of group and individual behaviours, and the role of key transferable skills of English, maths and digital.

If studying part-time, in the second year you will build on your previous generic and subject specialist development. In the Being a Subject Specialist Teacher module you will develop more advanced strategies and methods for promoting learning and focus on subject specialist areas and the critical analysis of subject specialist pedagogy. Students will be encouraged to identify and recognise curriculum and professional challenges and develop their ability to respond to these in innovative and creative ways.

Your level of qualifications, experience and whether you are already in a teaching or training setting, will determine the qualification to be awarded.

ROUTE 1: ROUTE 2:

POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION (LIFELONG LEARNING)

Duration:

2 years, 4 hours per week or 1 year, 8 hours per week (full time for pre-service only)

Fees:

£7,500 per annum full-time or £3,750 per annum part-time

Entry Requirements:

You should normally:

Be in paid employment (in-service) as a teacher or trainer at a recognised training or educational establishment (e.g. Further Education College, Independent Training Provider) or working as a volunteer teacher or trainer

OR

Be able to arrange a placement with a provider of 250 hours (or 125 per year if studying part time)

Have a UK first degree or equivalent, normally at 2.1 or above to be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

• Applicants holding a UK first degree or equivalent at 2.2 will be awarded a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education.

Have a Level 3 qualification or above in the subject area you wish to teach (if this is different from your degree)

Hold Level 2 Maths and English at grade C/4 or above.

You must be willing and able to attend a 2-day Specialist Conference, held at the Queensgate campus, University of Huddersfield.

This course will prepare you a teaching role in the Lifelong Learning Sector. This may include roles such as:

Further and Higher Education Lecturer

Trainer in Private Training Organisation

You will also be eligible to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, the full professional status for teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

ITE bursaries of between £15,000 and £30,000 are awarded by DfE in some subjects, subject to eligibility and allocated on a first-come-firstserved basis. Eligibility can be discusses at the application stage.

ACCESS TO HE DIPLOMA COURSES

An ‘Access to HE’ Diploma course is designed to allow adult learners to progress on to Higher Education study as quickly as possible.

The Access course is a full Level 3 programme, studied in a single academic year, for anyone aged 19 or over. This is in comparison to equivalent Level 3 courses which usually take two years to complete. In addition, the Access courses are designed specifically to prepare students for Higher Education, whereas many other courses also focus on employability skills.

We offer Access to HE Diplomas in a wide range of subject areas, and the optional modules available within many of the Diplomas give our students the scope to apply for an even wider range of university degrees. Open Awards Access courses are recognised by all UK Higher Education providers, and students have been offered places on degree courses ranging from Nursing, Midwifery, and other health-related courses, through to Psychology, International Business Management, Law and Engineering.
