LUCY EARLAM HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE LEVEL 3

Lucy is currently a Level 3 Health and Social Care student. She chose to study at the college after receiving positive recommendations from friends and family members, despite the college being out of her immediate catchment area. During her time at Stockport, Lucy has flourished, not only in the classroom after receiving multiple A*’s in coursework, but also during her multiple placements and volunteer work. In her first year, she took the initiative to secure a placement opportunity at Stepping Hill Hospital, as she was keen to expand her real-life experience of the subject area.

Since then, Lucy has successfully progressed onto Level 3, in which she is required to complete 175 hours of placement time. She is now working at Borough Care Retirement Home twice a week. During her time at Stockport College, Lucy has received excellent support from staff members, notably her learner support contact, Zoe Robinson, who helped her during periods of increased academic pressure.

Upon completion of her Health and Social Care course, Lucy aspires to study Midwifery at university.

£23m CAMPUS REDEVELOPMENT

Over the coming months we’re looking forward to the final stage of campus redevelopment being completed. This will take our investment into new facilities and services at the college to over £23m in the last couple of years.

Just last year we opened our new Art & Design centre at the same time as completing a complete refurbishment of the Vernon building. This £7m investment adds to the already impressive facilities that can be found in our construction and engineering buildings.

The last piece in the jigsaw will be a showpiece building that serves as the main entrance to the campus from the A6. From the artist impression on the right, you can get a sense of our main entrance which will feature a triple height reception area and where you will be greeted by our friendly reception staff.

The building will also house a brand-new café and learning services area on the ground floor as well as a range of subject areas and classrooms including our Hair & Beauty department which will also be open to the public on an appointment basis.

Come and see how the campus is shaping up by visiting us at one of our open events in November, March and June. Details of times and dates can be found on page 2 of this prospectus.

WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?

An apprenticeship is a real job where the student, who is called an apprentice, learns specific skills and understanding, gains experience and gets paid.

An apprentice is an employee with a contract of employment and holiday leave. By the end of an apprenticeship, the successful apprentice will have the right skills and knowledge needed for their chosen career. It can take between one and six years to complete an apprenticeship depending on which programme is chosen, what level it is and the apprentice’s previous experience.

Each apprenticeship has a defined contents and structure which is referred to as the ‘standard’. The ‘standard’ ensures that all apprenticeships offered by different providers have the same outcome.

WHAT SUBJECT CAN I STUDY?

The Trafford College Group offers over 50 standards. An apprentice will have training provided by expert staff, as well as being mentored and supported by their employer. The employer and the college will work together to ensure that the training package meets the needs of both the employer and the apprentice. In turn, this will support the apprentice to become occupationally competent in their chosen career.

HOW DO I FIND A VACANCY?

Apprentice vacancies are often advertised like a normal job and are updated regularly. Check out our website to see our current apprenticeship vacancies.
