Car and bike races have been held on closed public roads in the area around the town of Chemnitz, Germany since the 1920s and were still taking place until as recently as 1990. It was decided, however, that the five mile course through such a densely populated area was no longer suitable and a new circuit was built five miles west of Chemnitz in 1996. Although mainly used as a driver training centre and road transport safety station, Sachsenring first hosted MotoGP in 1998 and many improvements have taken place since then, including a drastic layout enhancement in 2001. Numerous tight corners make it one of the slower tracks on the calendar but there is never any shortage of close racing action.

Sachsenring The circuit hosting the German Grand Prix in the FIM Moto2 and Moto3 World Championships is the second toughest on the calendar for tyres. In addition to an abrasive surface, the track has a very uneven ten left hand corners compared to just three right-handed and heat generation is key. To meet the demands, Dunlop is allocating the hard and special hard tyre for the 600cc Moto2 machines but with Moto3 heat generation characteristics in the tyres is completely different. With less power, less heat is generated on the right side of the tyre so the 250cc class needs softer tyres to ensure that there is sufficient heat in the right hand side of the tyres for when the riders need that all important corner grip. All eight tyre options across the two classes are new to the Sachsenring track for 2015 featuring new constructions and compounds evolved from the 2014 specifications. 2015 options are designed to give better performances across the range of tracks on the Moto2 and Moto3 calendar.

The day a 500cc two stroke could have won a motogp race
Olivier Jacque (Yamaha) started from pole – the last ever pole for a 4cylinder two-stroke machine. It also seemed that this would be the final two- stroke victory with Jacque and Barros (also on a twostroke)
Jacque and Barros battling at the front, collide and crash out with less than three laps remaining, gifting the victory to Valentino Rossi (on the four-stroke Honda).
