Fairtrade Fortnight and Big Brew Celebrations We have loved seeing your messages and photographs come through from your Fairtrade Fortnight and Big Brew celebrations. Please keep them coming! We thought we’d share some of them with you…

“Last December my local fair trade group held a stall as part of a Christmas fair at our local pub. Today we are following up on that connection with a Fairtrade Fortnight stall. The pub are serving soup using Ma’s coconut milk as their soup of the day, with the recipe cards our group developed on all the tables.” “Just back from our Big Brew event at Shrewsbury United Reformed Church (although we just call it our Fairtrade Shrewsbury coffee morning!). About 40 people attended and enjoyed a presentation over a cuppa (supplies kindly donated by the local Co-op) plus homemade brownies and tea bread, then orders taken for Easter eggs and sales made from our range of stock brought down from the market stall to the tune of about £330 including donations for refreshments.” Marion Haworth

“Stall set up @ WallaseyFood Lots of friendly stalls and ethical products.” Anne Litherland

“A bit late to post but St. Francis Church, Valley Park, Chandler's Ford has sent £250 from our Big Brew with a raffle for a hamper and cake stall. Could not manage a picture but I'm rather pleased with our effort. Congratulations to all efforts, large and small.”

“Excellent Big Brew at church supported by our local Co-op.” Anne Beales

Angela Morris

“We had a busy and fun weekend celebrating Fairtrade. Thanks to everybody involved and all those who came to our coffee morning and worship yesterday. Thanks to the Co-op in Lyme Regis for your fairtrade donations.” Uplyme Church

“4 assemblies in 1 day!!!! This is colouring by Reception classes” Lyndsey Wright

We never fail to be amazed by your wonderful stalls and dedication to the fair trade cause. The difference you make is incredible. When you choose to buy and sell Traidcraft products, you’re supporting Traidcraft's pioneering work in transforming the lives of small-scale artisans, farmers and their communities. You’re also helping to spread the word of the fair trade movement, potentially to people who wouldn’t regularly purchase fair trade. Every additional

customer who discovers fair trade is a step towards achieving justice and fairness within the trade system. Thank you. If you know anyone who might be interested in becoming a Fairtrader, or stocking fair trade products in their place of work or worship, please send them our way! Whisk Traidcraft instant coffee, sugar and three tbsp boiling water for about five minutes, until thick and fluffy.

It has come to our attention that the Dip Dye Ombre Socks from Thought (10874) are in fact a blue and pink dip dye, rather than just pink like the catalogue image would suggest. We've updated the website to show the correct image, so apologies for any inconvenience this has caused. Thanks to those of you who got in touch to let us know!

For cold coffee, pour cold milk (or vegan alternative) into two glasses. For hot coffee, simply heat your milk before pouring into two heatproof glasses. Spoon coffee mixture evenly on top of glasses. Stir thoroughly before drinking. traidcraftshop.co.uk

Small Farm. Strong Business. Lydia Karimi Muitari and Jenny Kajuju Rugiri, Kenya Photo: Traidcraft Exchange/Ian Gatere

“We learned how to practice Kilimo Biashara (farming as a business). Not Kilimo Tumbo (farming for the tummy, i.e. subsistence farming).” - Ann Ntinyari Ann Ntinyari is a farming entrepreneur in Meru County, Kenya, who has created a strong business from her two-acre farm. You may have supported members of this community by donating to our Hidden Entrepreneurs appeal back in 2018. But this year that funding runs out. We need your help to not just continue this work, but expand it. Could you donate today to help us reach more people like Ann? Ann and her family faced a terrible loss in 2016, “[My husband] Paul had parked his motorbike on the side of the road at the corner as you enter Ruiri town. He was fixing a flat tyre. The lorry lost control, went off the road and hit my husband. He said goodbye to this world.” Sadly, tragedies like this are often

compounded by a loss of household income when crops aren’t harvested– but Ann’s steadfastness and adaptability has protected her family. Ann took training in farming techniques including crop spacing, conservation tilling and crop rotation. Later she learnt negotiation skills and financial education on practices like table banking. These new skills, alongside access to market prices through an SMS messaging service, mean Ann is no longer beholden to unfair practices by middlemen, earning fairer prices for her produce. “I’ve come to realise that if you use your head, problems shall not stand in your way,” she reveals.

Ann explains that “It’s not helping us with say money that really counts. Instead, it’s helping us to think anew that counts.” Farmers like Ann have always had the work ethic and tenacity to succeed, but often did not have the opportunity. Your donations can help power this work further – more communities, more farms and more entrepreneurs using the power of business to leave poverty behind for good. Your support is needed now more than ever.
