Friends, All being well, this month we may be able to finally cast aside our face masks and get back to something approaching normal. To celebrate, we are developing a set of resources for this year’s Traidcraft Week, all based on the idea of gathering outdoors safely in your community. Traidcraft Week ‘al fresco’, will include a set of downloadable resources that can be used during the whole summer and beyond, to bring people together, have fun and learn more about fair trade. Details can be found on page 6. During Live Fair for Lent, I mentioned one of our partners Vent for Change. In this month’s Bulletin, you can watch a video with founder and CEO Evan Lewis to find out more of their wonderful work. Finally, a note for your diaries, on 20th & 21st of August. I will be hosting the promised Faitrrader Summer party. It will be along the same lines as the party we had a couple of months ago. Via Zoom we will have updates, plans for the autumn, a quiz and a chance for you to catch up with staff and other Fairtraders in your region. Details will be sent towards the end of June. Happy fair trading, Matt

Kirsty “I love our beer bread range – especially now there’s an extra flavour to choose from. They’re a great price point, easy to use and produce delicious results. I especially like that they come in a bag which has been handsewn by the charity Deaf Hands at Work – when I gifted some of these to family and friends last year, this was the point that got them talking the most!”

Lizy “It might sound a bit of a strange choice, but I am a huge fan of Traidcraft washing up gloves. This season they’re a lovely blue colour – making a boring job that little bit more exciting. Plus, I find they don’t puncture like regular washing up gloves, meaning they’ll last so much longer.”

TRAIDCRAFT’S GUIDE TO

Attracting Pollinators TO YOUR GARDEN OR OUTDOOR SPACE

Pollination is essential for the survival of many things, including around one third of crop production. Climate change is contributing to the rapid decline of pollinators, such as bees, wasps and beetles, which is having a devastating effect on the planet. Here are some of our top tips for attracting pollinators to your garden! Check out your summer catalogue for more detailed information, as well as a guide to building your own bee hotel.

1. 2. 3.

LESS WEEDING Many plants which we consider pesky weeds, are actually a pollinator’s dream. Dandelions and lawn clover, for example, provide vital pollen for many species of bee.

PLANT CHOICE Foxgloves, lavender and sunflowers, will attract no end of pollinators, all season long. Plants like fennel and dill are also good to have in your garden, as butterfly larvae feed on them.

4.

CREATE A BEE HOTEL Bee hotels attract solitary species of bee to your garden, as they’re a safe place where they can breed and lay their eggs. See our summer catalogue (page 84) for for a simple guide on how to make your own bee hotel from recycled materials.

AVOID USING HARMFUL PESTICIDES Rather than using traditional, chemical-filled pesticides or insecticides, which are detrimental to wildlife and soil, you could consider a more natural solution. Having plants which attract ‘good bugs’ to your garden – i.e., the creatures whose diet includes the pests and larvae that are feeding on your plants, is the perfect way to combat the problem and take care of the planet at the same time. See your summer catalogue for an example of this!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BECOMING A BAFTS MEMBER? BAFTS has the Ten Principles of Fair Trade at its heart, but its real strength is its members - the sense of community and solidarity, the knowledge sharing, and support, and the fact that suppliers and shops are all part of the same movement - to fight for transparent supply chains, better and fairer conditions for workers, and helping people to fulfil their potential wherever in the world they happen to be. Benefits for Members are based around 3 main ideas: Sense of Community

Shining the Spotlight on:

BAFTS WHO ARE BAFTS?

BAFTS (British Association of Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers) Fair Trade Network UK is the voice of fair trade retailing in the UK. A vibrant community of fair trade enterprises - small 8

Who they are, what they do and why it’s so wonderful being a member!

independent shops and the suppliers who adhere to the Ten Principles of Fair Trade - BAFTS members hail from all over the UK. We here at Traidcraft are proud to be one of them! BAFTS is also a Fair Trade Network Member of WFTO.

Targeted training and business advice, peer networking, knowledge sharing, and collective marketing/promotional opportunities. Inspiration Social media and newsletters, community campaigning and community story telling. Accountability Thorough application procedure, ongoing improvement targets and demonstrating commitment to fair trade.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A BAFTS MEMBER?

OF COURSE, WE THINK ALL SHOPS THAT SELL FAIR TRADE GOODS ARE ESSENTIAL, BUT WE’RE BIASED! HOW BAFTS RESPONDED TO THE COVID PANDEMIC Since the pandemic started, BAFTS has supported its members with a series of training sessions and webinars, as well as weekly support calls over Zoom, where all are encouraged to share experiences and ideas. Supplier members collaborated on a project to switch their production facilities to making face masks, ensuring a vital income for hundreds of workers in low-income countries and thousands of these masks were sold by fair trade shops all over the UK. One of the highlights of the fair trade calendar is the BAFTS Conference which has in recent years touched down in cities such as York, Bristol, Manchester and Leicester. The keynote speaker at last year’s virtual Conference was our own Robin Roth, whose insights into “being more pirate” resonated with BAFTS members, who were forced to nimbly change their business models to embrace online sales, social distancing and the precise definition of “non-essential shop” (of course, we think all shops that sell fair trade goods are essential, but we’re biased!)

Hear it from the members themselves… "We are pleased to be part of a like-minded community and feel it is very important to share knowledge with one another. We also think it is important for our customers to see we have been through a rigorous accreditation process of our fair trade status. I have particularly appreciated everyone’s support over the last 2 months, I think we have become stronger as a group through this shared challenge." Jenny Good Taste - The Fair Trade Shop, Sheffield

"It's great to know that we are part of a supportive network. It is so good to be able to contact another member for advice or support. It also enables us to work more closely with other members in our area. The regular newsletters are great in keeping us up to date on the latest fair trade news. We appreciate the social media and other media work that BAFTS uses to promote what all members do." Jan Fair Dos/Siopa Teg, Wales

If you’re a retailer selling Traidcraft (and other) products, you can apply to join the BAFTS community, either as a shop member or a Friend of BAFTS. You don’t need to have a bricks and mortar shop and fees start from £50 a year. Want to find out more? bafts.org.uk Social: @BAFTSUK traidcraftshop.co.uk

Freekeh is one of Zaytoun’s best-selling products. It’s a traditional alternative to rice and has been grown in Palestine for over 4,000 years. We hand over to our friends at Zaytoun, to tell you all about this versatile store cupboard essential…

GET FREEKEH WITH US! We love how you’ve all embraced our freekeh from Palestine! It’s delicious, packed full of goodness and versatile - we love it in everything from soups and stuffed peppers to veggie burgers and nut-roasts. It also makes the most flavoursome standalone pilaf or base for a risotto. To celebrate the freekeh harvest, we’re sharing our favourite freekeh dishes using the hashtag #GetFreekehWithUs and we’d love you to join in! At this time of year in Palestine, farmers harvest the long sheaves of spring wheat before flame-roasting them in the fields to produce delicious freekeh. With a subtle yet moreish smoky flavour, this nutritious grain holds a firm texture making it ideal for so many dishes. No wonder the Great Taste judges were bowled over by it and awarded it a star in 2017!

SO MANY WAYS TO GET FREEKEH! We love the unique flavour and texture that freekeh brings to salads, risottos and pilafs, as well as veggie favourites like burgers and nut roasts. It’s also delicious as an accompaniment to roasted vegetables and meats.  Traditionally it is slowly simmered in stock for a nourishing soup, a Palestinian staple for centuries. Use it to make a stuffing for your Sunday roast and thank us later!

10 traidcraftshop.co.uk

DID YOU KNOW? Legend has it that green wheat freekeh was discovered by accident. One spring, millennia ago, a Mediterranean village was attacked by invading armies causing the villagers to flee. When they returned later that spring, they found their wheat crop, their source of livelihood, had been set on fire. Faced with the prospect of starvation, they rubbed off (fareek) the husk, to see what could be salvaged.  Thanks to the high moisture level in the milky, green kernels, it was not burnt but much to

their surprise, it was perfectly roasted and imbued with a wonderfully smoky aroma.  Today, farmers in Palestine replicate this ancient process by harvesting wheat in the spring, while it’s still green, before flameroasting it and finally rubbing off the husks.

RECIPE FOR FREEKEH AND LEEK PILAF A tasty bowl of goodness made with freekeh and leeks, and sprinkled with toasted almonds. Simple to cook, the green wheat freekeh brings smooth smoky tones to this nourishing week-day supper. WHAT YOU’LL NEED 200g Zaytoun Freekeh 500g Leeks, Washed And Sliced 4 Tbsp Zaytoun Olive Oil 400ml Vegetable Stock 2 Large Garlic Cloves, Sliced 3 Tbsp Zaytoun Almonds, Roughly Chopped 2 Tbsp Finely Chopped Fresh Mint A Few Sprigs Of Thyme Zest And Juice Of 1 Lemon Salt And Freshly Ground Black Pepper 100g Feta Cheese (Optional Topping) HOW TO MAKE 1. Pour 3 tbsp olive oil into a large heavy-based pot, add the leeks and soften for 10–15 mins, stirring occasionally.

WHAT DID THE GREAT TASTE JUDGES SAY? “Excellent nutty flavour with mild smoky notes and an appealing bite.”

Zaytoun Smoky Freekeh 58738 (200g) £2.99 67466 (6 x 200g) £16.14 SHOP FREEKEH

2. Rinse the freekeh and add to the leeks along with the stock and thyme and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook over a low heat, stirring from time to time, for 20 mins or until liquid is absorbed then take off heat and let it stand. 3. Heat the remaining 1 tbsp oil in a frying pan until hot, add the almonds and toast until lightly coloured, lower the heat and add the garlic to soften for a few minutes. 4. Toss the freekeh and leek mixture with the mint, lemon zest & juice and season to taste. Top with toasted almonds and garlic, mix and serve. 5. Optional toppings: Feta cheese, crumbled on top. traidcraftshop.co.uk

Not long left to double your difference It’s safe to say that the last three months of the Regenerators Appeal have flown by- and now there’s only 5 days left to make a donation that’ll be matched by the UK government to help those on the front line of the climate crisis. Donate to The Regenerators Appeal before 7th June 2021 and the UK government will double your gift to help the most vulnerable stand strong in the face of climate change. People like Issa. “In my time when I was growing up, these changes had not happened. Back then the seasons went through without any problem. People here knew exactly what to do because the weather was stable.” But the certainty of Issa’s childhood is long gone. 14 traidcraftshop.co.uk

Climate change means that the coastal region’s once predictable weather is now erratic, and harvests have suffered. An unpredictable cycle of floods and droughts mean that farming in his community barely turns a profit. Issa told us: “The last rainy season, there was a lot of water and the river flooded. Some of the villagers lost their animals and their houses were destroyed - we had to find a boat to rescue them.” Climate change is happening right now, and it’s hitting the most vulnerable the hardest. Thank you so much if you've already supported to the Regenerators appeal by donating, holding a Big Brew, walking or running 100km in April, sharing the appeal amongst your networks and all the many, many creative ways in which you’ve been making the world of difference. Your support will be matched by the UK government and make twice the difference to people on the front line of climate change. If you would like to give again, you have until 7th June to get your donation doubled by the UK government.

REGENERATORS APPEAL

A letter from Traidcraft Exchange Chief Executive, Charlotte Timson regarding the India and Bangladesh COVID situation. Dear Friends, You will have seen on the news the devastating impact that COVID is having in India. Every day, we see more and more people struggling to get their families and friends to hospitals, to get access to oxygen. It is a desperate situation. At Traidcraft Exchange, we are doing everything we can to keep our staff, partners and the communities we work with safe. There isn’t anyone who is unaffected. Everyone is doing what they can to help colleagues who are sick and whose families need urgent help. I’m sad to say, that the situation is far worse than the official data being shared would have us believe. COVID is spreading into the rural areas. Villages that were isolated and protected from the virus last year are now being affected. And while the major cities might have been locked down, social distancing isn’t possible in these communities. While Bangladesh has mostly stayed out of the news, this new wave has already started to spread. The situation there is getting worse by the day. Hospitals are overwhelmed in Dhaka and oxygen supplies are running out. Many of the communities we work with have little or no healthcare to rely on. We are doing what we can to help in this emergency. We are ensuring people have correct information about COVID.

We have been working hard to ensure marginalised populations are included in local government vaccinations programmes, where these have existed. And we are coordinating with others, to ensure that people know where to get help. And beyond this immediate health crisis, there is the growing economic crisis. Homeworkers in India’s garment sector have no work. Migrant workers have had to travel once again back to their villages, without work or food. Small scale farmers who are harvesting their crops can’t sell them in the markets. Thanks to the support that many of you gave last year to our Recovery Appeal, we’ve already been able to support some of the communities most affected. And we know that we will have a lot to do to help people survive and recover again. Once again, we are working closely with our partners to revise our plans and will share more with you in coming weeks. But right now, I wanted to write to share something of how serious this situation is - and to reassure you that we are doing everything we can to support the people we work with in India and Bangladesh. We will be in touch with more information as soon as we can.

Tree planting nears target… and there’s still time to get involved and Plant an Acre! As part of the Regenerators appeal you’ve helped us raise enough money to plant a whopping 580 acres of fruit trees – that’s the equivalent of 387 football pitches. We’re hoping to plant a total of 630 acres – with just 50 acres still to be sponsored, can you help us get over the line and sponsor an acre for just £50? Each acre sponsored will help the Regenerators grow trees which will help them restore their land and their livelihoods for generations to come. The Plant an Acre initiative started on Earth Day and has been supported by Urban Green Newcastle and our friends at Traidcraft plc alongside other community groups and businesses. A tree was planted in Heaton Park, Newcastle in solidarity with the Regenerators to mark the beginning of the initiative Maveen Pereira, Head of Programmes at Traidcraft Exchange, explains how these trees will make a difference: “The climate crisis is happening now and those most vulnerable

are being hit the hardest. Drought and flooding - desert summers and bitter winters - lightning strikes and river erosion mean the crops needed to feed families are failing. By using green technology and planting new, climate resistant trees to protect their land, communities can fight back against the climate crisis.” Traidcraft spokesperson Jude Allen said: “We’ve pledged to raise £4000 to plant 80 acres of trees to support the Plant an Acre initiative. Plant an Acre gives us, as a business, the opportunity to add to our commitment to fight back against climate change while supporting producers. It’s also a great way to support our sister charity and get staff involved in something so positive coming out of lockdown.” Our aim is to have planted 630 acres of trees by the time the Regenerators Appeal ends on 7th June – but we need your help!. Can you help us get over the line? Click the button below to Plant an Acre. Please note, any monies raised over and above the amount need to plant trees will support our wider work on similar projects around the world.
