WELCOME Dear Friends, last year was a time of huge change for everyone; change in lifestyle, change in priorities, change in the way we work, and, perhaps most significantly, changes in the way we shop. During this period, you chose to invest your money in future-proof, fair trade goods from Traidcraft, and apart from thanking you, we want to reassure you that your money was well spent. From the producers you supported, to the environment you helped to restore, your purchases from Traidcraft are so much more than just store cupboard and homeware essentials; they are your chance to leave your fingerprints on the world you want to see. Thank you for being part of our movement.

OUR STORY SO FAR We are rule breakers, through and through. We put transparency, respect and dialogue into commercial practice. We are a Christian response to poverty. Fighting for the future of people and the planet since 1979, we are the original pioneers of fair trade. For over four decades, we have led the way in proving that fair trade could work commercially. Over the past 40 years, we pioneered the first fair trade chocolate, coffee, tea, fruit juice, wine, rice, honey, charcoal, rubber, palm oil… Almost everything we know today as fair trade began with Traidcraft. We buy and sell fair trade. We are one of the leading, dedicated fair trade companies, in the UK and globally. We stock a huge range of ethical, fair trade foods, beverages, household cleaning and rubber products, as well as fair trade crafts and clothing, from artisans in over 30 developing countries.
We are very mindful of our heritage here at Traidcraft and being co-founders of the world fair trade movement could either mean a weight on our shoulders to uphold the original vision in all its glory, or a liberating sense of freedom to carry on breaking the normal rules of trade, whenever and wherever we can. We prefer the latter; guarding the flames, not tending the ashes. 0191 491 0855 traidcraftshop.co.uk

TRAIDCRAFT THROUGH THE YEARS
OUR HISTORY With over 40 years of experience to our name, it’s safe to say we know a thing or two about fair trade. So, whether you’re new to Traidcraft or you’ve been with us from the start, why not join us as we take a stroll down memory lane, starting in the psychedelic ‘70s…
1979 Founder, Richard Adams gathered six radical free-thinkers on the top floor of a 1920s warehouse in Newcastle Upon Tyne, to launch his new vision - the beginnings of what would become a world-changing fair trade organisation. Meanwhile in 1979: Rapper’s Delight by Sugarhill Gang is credited with heralding the birth of hip-hop. Are You Being Served?, Dallas and Last of the Summer Wine are big hitters on our screens and the average house price is £13,650.
1986 Our ever-expanding team founded our sister charity (Traidcraft Exchange). Traidcraft Exchange has since worked tirelessly to make sure that the UK Government rules against the worst extremes of corporate abuse. Meanwhile in 1986: Soviet Nuclear reactor at Chernobyl explodes. Your average pint of beer costs 93p and The Bangles reach number one with Walk Like an Egyptian.
1989 We co-founded the World Fair Trade Organisation, whose Guarantee System is the only international verification model focused on social enterprises that put the interests of workers, farmers, artisans and the planet first. Meanwhile in 1989: The Berlin Wall falls, the first GPS satellite is released into orbit and the very first episode of The Simpsons is aired. Meanwhile, Sir Tim Berners-Lee invents a little thing we know as the World Wide Web.
1992 Traidcraft jointly founded the Fairtrade Foundation and helped establish the standards that underpin today’s well-known Fairtrade Mark. Meanwhile in 1992: Average house prices reach £68,634 and a litre of petrol costs around 40p. The 25th Olympics Games opens in Barcelona and Trolls are the best-selling toy of the year.

TRAIDCRAFT THROUGH THE YEARS
2013 It was due to the determination of our campaigns team in 2013 that resulted in the government setting up an official Supermarket Watchdog, the Grocery Adjudicator, with the legal power to fine supermarkets who pressured their suppliers into unethical or harmful situations. Meanwhile in 2013: Candy Crush game nets almost $1,000,000 per day, new words “twerk” and “selfie” are added to the dictionary and Prince George is welcomed to the world.
2019
2020 AND BEYOND In January 2020, we launched our rule breaking Transparent Coffee; publishing publicly (on the front of the packet, for all to see), exactly how much farmers are paid, how much goes into shipping, roasting and packing and how much profit we make. This made our coffee the first in the world to do this. Later in 2020, as part of our anti-Black Friday activities, we brought 100% transparency to the whole Traidcraft product range.
2019 saw Traidcraft hit a landmark birthday - we are 40! To celebrate four decades of fighting for trade justice, we hosted a huge thanksgiving service in Newcastle Cathedral, just steps away from where it all began in 1979. This year, we signed the Coffee Transparency Pledge, making 100% of our coffee costs transparent and public, as well as launching a limitededition anniversary range of products to coincide with our big birthday, and even boycotted Black Friday later in the year. Meanwhile in 2019: Lewis Capaldi’s Someone You Loved is the most streamed song, Conservative PM, Theresa May, resigns over Brexit plans, and the average cost of a wedding is £32,000.
Meanwhile in 2020: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quit the royal family, UK toilet roll sales rise by a fifth, ‘Quarantine’ is Cambridge Dictionary’s Word of the Year and Bill Bailey is crowned Strictly Come Dancing king. 0191 491 0855 traidcraftshop.co.uk

OUR VISION
OUR VISION: ARE WHO AREWHAT WE? WE WORKING TOWARDS? We want to make capitalism fair. What do we mean by that? We recognise the huge injustices in trade, the environment and society, which we are willing to fight to eradicate. We are not in business to make people rich and businesses richer; we want those throughout our supply chains to get the money they need not just to live, but to thrive. By building us and those around us to be the most ethical that we can be, we stand a chance of achieving our goal. We know our vision is vast, and fraught with obstacles, but we won’t stop until it’s achieved. Here is how we propose we’re going to achieve it:
We are here
Build a premium ethical business • Acquire like-minded, ethical businesses • Build a conglomerate of ethical businesses • Make capitalism fair • Tell everyone Fair trade isn’t just part of our business, it’s fundamental to our business. And we’re 100% committed to it. Amazing work has been done, but we need to push the boundaries of fair further and keep raising standards for everyone; over 40 years on from our conception, Fairtrade-certified products line supermarket shelves up and down the country. We want you to know that fair trade, in its purest form, goes far beyond compliance to a set of standards.
WHY BUY OUR PRODUCTS: HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT? We are on a mission to create real, sustainable change in the word of trade. In the process, we just happen to sell the very best tea, coffee, chocolate, sugar, sweets and biscuits around. We believe that the key to buying less, is buying right… investing in what is good, rather than chasing what is cheap. Our vision is to be the best ethical business there is. How are we hoping to achieve this? Well, our Traidcraftbranded products are a start… • W e always go further than just fair. You can rely on us to make the right, most ethical decision, for people and planet. Every time. 6
traidcraftshop.co.uk
• W e believe that consuming ethically shouldn’t mean compromising on quality; our range is carefully and expertly curated. • W e only have one planet, so we’re making sure that we look after it; from how our food and drink is wrapped and packaged, to where it comes from. • W e choose who we work with very carefully, we want to work with those who are honourable, truthful and passionate, and those who believe in our vision. • W e believe Fairtrade-certification just isn’t enough anymore, and that being organic really does matter.
Fair trade has grown enormously since its origins. There are lots of organisations throughout the world whose philosophy, mission and values are aligned with Traidcraft’s. We call ourselves Fair Trade Organisations (FTOs) and often work together. We are a member of two larger membership organisations:
The World Fair Organisation (WFTO), which is a larger global membership body of FTOs and importantly includes membership in the global South – in other words, producers from Africa, Central and Latin America and Asia who are seeking to benefit from Fair Trade.
The European Fair Trade Association (EFTA), which is a group of like-minded FTOs in Europe, collaborating in product development, purchasing and a whole range of other things. From cocoa and coffee beans, to the finest tea leaves and sugar, the fairly traded ingredients which go into our products are what set us apart. Coming from fair trade co-operatives all over the world, the income farmers and producers earn supports the livelihood of their families and local communities.

WE ARE TRANSPARENT
WE’RE BARING ALL As you know, almost everything we recognise today as fair trade began with Traidcraft. Four decades on, we’re pioneering the start of a new movement; a 100% transparent movement. We want Traidcraft to be a premium, ethical business. Transparency is at the heart of what we do; it is part of our mission, part of our DNA. At the start of 2020, we launched our Transparent Coffee, breaking all the rules and publishing publicly (on the front of the packet, for all to see!) exactly how much farmers are paid for their beans, how much goes into shipping, roasting and packing and how much profit we make.

As part of our anti-Black Friday activities at the back end of 2020, we decided to publish this level of transparent information for ALL of our Traidcraftbranded products - making this a world first, 100% transparent range. Something we’re really rather proud of. With this information available at your fingertips, you’ll discover the true costs of the products you love and actually how little (rightly or wrongly) of that cost goes towards the ingredients in our products. We’ve set the bar high. We hope other companies will join us in our fight against injustices in the conventional trade system. Transparency is a giant leap towards making capitalism fair.

FAIR TRADE AND CLIMATE CHANGE
FAIR TRADE AND CLIMATE CHANGE What’s the link? How can your everyday choices as a consumer affect the rate of climate change? Traidcraft’s Mission and Transparency Lead, Robin Roth, explains all… Image: Vandana Shiva
H
ow often do you have a conversation with someone and come away with your entire understanding having been changed without you even realising it? I had been working in Fairtrade for five years and was managing Europe’s single biggest Fairtrade company, and I really thought I understood just how critical Fairtrade was to farmers. I was convinced that without it, farmers really didn’t have much of a chance at all. It was around then that I was lucky enough to meet Vandana Shiva, pictured above, who runs a small model farm, North of Delhi. On the farm she encourages farmers to take seeds from her seed bank, use them for free, sell the crop and return a certain percentage for storage and use the following year. By mixing seeds in neighbouring farms, new strains emerge naturally and Vandana’s seed bank now hosts over 1,000 different strains of rice. This extraordinary diversity prevents large companies from decoding the
14 traidcraftshop.co.uk
genetic sequence of a seed, registering it and patenting it (thereby enabling them to charge farmers to use it). When I met Vandana Shiva for the first time she seemed kindly, thoughtful and sincere. I did not, at the time, know that she was an alternate Nobel Prize winner, a serial litigator against, (and frequent vanquisher of) Monsanto, a public crusader against corporate malpractice and the adored defender of small farmer rights across India. In comparison to her, I didn’t really know anything. “What is the most important thing for a small farmer - the thing he or she needs more than anything else to ensure survival?” I asked her. “Healthy soil.” She replied quietly and looked out of the window. “What about a secure income - or a good price for the crop - surely that’s more important?” “Healthy soil.”
FAIR TRADE AND CLIMATE CHANGE
THERE ARE MORE LIVING ORGANISMS IN A HANDFUL OF EARTH THAN THERE ARE STARS IN THE UNIVERSE. IF YOU SPRAY THIS WITH PESTICIDE, YOU WILL KILL NEARLY ALL OF THEM. THEN YOU DON’T HAVE SOIL ANYMORE. YOU HAVE DUST.
“And then?”
crops, and the farming of them will not be sustainable for long, Fairtrade price or not. Healthy soil is the basis of all farming, of all growth, of all trade, of all nourishment and of all economic security. If the soil has gone, there isn’t a crop to sell.
“A contented wife.” “Seriously? Don’t you get that with a secure income?” “And next,” she carried on, quite unperturbed, “Healthy children.” It has taken me years to unravel what she said, and more importantly, what she meant. I am not a farmer - but I have seen severely degraded soil. I have also seen simple communities of forest farmers living on just half an acre of land each, but living with such abundance of food that it felt almost Panglossian. It has become clear to me that it if soil is not looked after,
Fair trade in Britain is all about conscious choices: spending a bit more money to help farmers who are committed to nourishing the earth is the beginning of an extraordinary journey. “There are more living organisms in a handful of earth than there are stars in the universe. If you spray this with pesticide, you will kill nearly all of them. Then you don’t have soil anymore. You have dust.”
We are increasingly concerned and worried about the killer effects climate change is having on us and our partners. Our commitment to the environment is just as important to us as social and trade justice. The needs of our planet are at the heart of every decision we make; from the ever-expanding range of Organic and sustainable products we have on offer, to the eco-credentials of the suppliers, couriers, printers and photographers we work with. 0191 491 0855 traidcraftshop.co.uk 15
TRAIDCRAFT TEA
AWARD-WINNING TEA Our first tea came from a little estate in the south of Sri Lanka, in 1979. Known as the Waulugala Estate, the farm was owned by a charitable trust, which ran homes and refuges for orphaned children and young people with disabilities. Half of the tea profits went to the Trust, and half was received by the tea workers in the form of an annual bonus. We proved that people were keen to pay a premium to make sure the producers had a better deal. Over the years, we have partnered with growers in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Sri Lanka, Rwanda and India.

FAIR TRADE FACTS
Fair trade products are sold in over 120 countries across the world. Garstang was the first town in the world to achieve Fairtrade status. Over 600 communities across the UK have since followed suit. Fairtrade (one word) is an international standards and certification system in which producers and buyers agree to uphold certain minimum standards and payments and in return their product can be labelled with the Fairtrade Foundation’s Fairtrade Mark. Fair trade (two words) means that something has been fairly traded, often above and beyond the minimum standards which Fairtrade sets. The Fairtrade Foundation’s Fairtrade Mark is recognised by over 80% of the UK population. We are proud to be one of the founders of the Fairtrade Foundation, set up in 1992. The Fairtrade Foundation licenses the Fairtrade Mark to over 6,000 types of products in the UK; including coffee tea, fruit, flowers, juice, rubber, wine, sugar, herbs, spices and so many more. Our Transparent Coffee was a world first, publishing our costs and profit on the front of the packaging! Since then, our entire range of own brand goods has gone 100% transparent.
18 traidcraftshop.co.uk
Some items, such as fish, cannot be certified by the Fairtrade Foundation as there are no set standards, and therefore cannot carry the Fairtrade Mark. The first ever Fairtrade banana was sold in 2000. Now, one in three supermarket bananas carry the Mark. FairPalm is currently the world’s only fair trade, organic palm oil, that protects the environment while supporting smallholder growers. The first fair trade label was created by a Dutch organisation called Max Havelaar, who were selling fair trade coffee. Named after a character from a 19th century novel, Max Havelaar was a bit like our Robin Hood.
If you see the Fairtrade Mark with an arrow next to it, it means to look on the back of the packaging to learn more about the ingredients and sourcing method. All the ingredients that are available under Fairtrade standards have to be Fairtrade (e.g., all the cocoa, sugar and spice). The minimum total Fairtrade content is 20%, but many companies, like us, go above and beyond that.

FAIRPALM
FairPalm INTRODUCING
THE WORLD’S ONLY, FAIR TRADE, ORGANIC PALM OIL Since 2013, Traidcraft has worked with a cooperative in Ghana called Serendipalm, who have followed sustainable methods very successfully, focusing on natural ways to increase production and support their workers’ training and healthcare. They also use completely organic methods of farming and allow crops to grow at their own pace. Through working with Serendipalm as well as Natural Habitats in Ecuador, we have developed FairPalm – the world’s only fair trade, organic palm oil, that protects the environment while supporting smallholder growers.

The FairPalm label guarantees that the process of creating the oil involves fair pay, makes direct links between smallholders and consumers, as well as focusing on high environmental standards. You can find a splash of FairPalm in our range of Fairtrade cookies.

BRANDS WE WORK WITH
BETTER, TOGETHER At Traidcraft, we love to partner with other brands that share our values, who work towards creating a better future for people and the planet.

Bio-D are the UK’s leading manufacturer of environmentally responsible, ethically sound, hypoallergenic, vegan cleaning products. Independently owned, they create products that don’t cost the earth, in any sense. Using naturally derived and plant-based ingredients, Bio-D leave out any ingredients that could be harmful to both wildlife, humans and the planet.
Starting its life in Uganda in the early 1990s, Tropical Wholefoods began helping Ugandan farmers sell their fruits at good prices in European markets. They pay fair prices in advance; in fact, they pay up to 60% of the order value when the contract is issued, which is crucial for small producer organisations to be able to pay their farmers for their harvest. 0191 491 0855 traidcraftshop.co.uk 25

WHAT MATTERS TO US? Whilst still pioneering the future of fair trade, we have the following three key themes very much at the heart of every decision we make.

TRADE JUSTICE: We are painfully aware that 40 years of fair trade has not done enough to counter the incredible power imbalances in international trade. We are passionate about economic justice and believe that transparency is key in achieving this.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE: We are increasingly concerned and worried about the killer effects climate change is having on our partners. We will bring people’s attention to the crisis which will be created if we overstep the UN’s ambition to pursue a limit to global warming of 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels.
