AUG 2019

Welcome Dear Friends,

The summer used to be a time of preparation for the autumn, but this summer we have added a return to Greenbelt to continue our 40th birthday celebrations. Speaking of which, we will be holding a celebration service at Newcastle Cathedral on Saturday 14th September. The event will also include our AGM. All are welcome to both parts of the day (details are on page 14). However, only shareholders will be eligible to vote at the AGM.

Behind the scenes!

We’re currently putting together our AW19 catalogue, with lots of new and exciting goodies included, as well as a sneak preview at our Christmas range. We hope you’re as excited as we are for it to drop!

Finally, the Autumn Tour is finally in place. Page 6 gives the full list of the 12 roadshow venues as well as details of how to register.

Happy fair trading!

Matt

We used a local photographer for all our new AW19 imagery. Located in picturesque Northumberland, near Morpeth, CTP’s eco-friendly studio regularly runs off-grid. With 10 kilowatt solar panels on the roof, the studio offsets 11.5 tonnes of carbon annually (11,534 kilowatt hours energy generated). Inside the studio, all internal lighting is LED, which uses 360 watts per hour, opposed to one kilowatt per hour for standard strip lights. Any excess energy generated is sold back to the grid or tops up the water tank. 2

Office Update

We’re delighted to share some wonderful news with you. You will remember that in January, when we shared the new business plan, we said that we would need to sell our long-term home in Gateshead, outsource our fulfilment and move to serviced offices. While it was a sound business decision, saying goodbye to our home and to the small team that had been re-employed on a contractual basis sat heavy with us. We are delighted to announce that through encouraging sales and other events, we made the decision in June to stay at our home in Kingsway and to offer permanent roles for many of our colleagues in both Sales Support Team and the Warehouse.

Sharon will lead our new look Sales Support Team (formally Customer Services Department). She will be joined by Helen and Maureen, while Tina will look after all things credit related. Leanne will deal with all things finance and Eve will cover everything Traidcraft IT. Carolyn will lead a team of nine in the warehouse. John P, Steve, Alex, Dave, Michael and Guy will be responsible for goods in, warehouse and despatch, and Lesley, Sam and John L will be overseeing picking, packing and returns. 3

Product Updates from Lizy

Double Chocolate Chunk Cookies The chocolate chunks have been sourced and ordered and should be arriving into the UK at the end of August and made into cookies early September.

What Happened?

Our chocolate suppliers no longer stock Fairtrade bake-stable dark chocolate chunks, they have to be specially made. The minimum order for the chocolate is six tonnes. Traidcraft require annually around four tonnes, so this would mean wasting two tonnes of chocolate which is not commercially viable. We are working with our biscuit manufactures to make sure we use the chocolate chunks.

Fruit & Oat Cookies

Our popular fruit and oat cookies sold incredibly fast and much quicker than we’d anticipated, which meant that we ran out of packaging quicker than we thought we would. Packaging is being reprinted and we hope to be back in stock early September.

Clean and Fair update

The palm oil is now being prepared for a full-scale production trial. Due to therigorous testing the formulation needs to go through (including a test that takes three months), we hope to bring back these products at the end of this year.

Why are we using a different palm oil?

We are trialling a different part of the palm in the Clean and Fair range. We still buy palm oil from Serendipalm for the biscuits as well as from Natural Habitats in Ecuador. In order for the cleaning formulation not to fail, the manufacturer suggested using the ‘kernel’ of the palm. Ecuador have the facilities to extract the kernel, Serendipalm do not. If we successfully bring back Clean and Fair we will only be using the palm oil sourced from Ecuador due to the type of palm oil that is required. 6

Update from Sales Support Team

We wanted to take this opportunity to share some good news with you all. We’ve just gone through a system upgrade (launched 25th July) which will dramatically reduce our carbon footprint, which is essential for us as an eco-friendly company like Traidcraft. Along with our commitment to the environment, we hope that our upgrade will make your ordering process quicker and simpler, but if you have any questions that aren’t covered below, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. As with any big change, we anticipate minor teething troubles, so please have patience and bear with us. Here are some of the main changes and how they will affect you: • Your invoices and statements will look different but will include the same information. Note: With the protection of the environment in mind, we will be cutting down the amount of paper we send out. Everyone we have an email address for, we’ll be automatically switching to e-documents (see below for more information on this).

• There will be a ‘Pay Now’ button on your e-invoice, that you can click through to make your payment. This will make the payment process much quicker and easier for you. • Previously there has been a packing list in each parcel, stating exactly what is inside your parcel, where after the update, there will only be one per order. This will drastically cut down the amount of paper we use, which will in turn reduce our carbon footprint. • All items in your order will be despatched at the same time, rather than being split over two days which can sometimes happen now. This will help in both reducing the carbon footprints of the delivery drivers and means you will only need to be available once to accept delivery. • We will now be using handheld devices in the warehouse, reducing the amount of paper we use. • We appreciate your patience with any initial setbacks and trust you will understand that we are upgrading so that the ordering process will be better for you, our valued customers, in the long run.

Paper Invoices and Statements

As part of our commitment to the environment, from the 31st of July 2019, Traidcraft will no longer be automatically sending paper documents. Apart from drastically reducing our carbon footprint, this decision will also save the company around £15,000 per year. If we have an e-mail address for you, there will be an automatic transfer if you are not already subscribed to e-documents. If we don’t already have your e-mail address, please send your information to sales@traidcraft.co.uk or call 0191 4910855 and select option 3. Should you wish to use a different e-mail for financial documents, please contact us and we can put that in place for you.* 8

Ways to Pay

...Update from CSD

To deposit a cheque at the Post Office, you can use your pre-printed, personalised HSBC/first direct paying in slip. Your unique paying in book will have a personalised serial number, linked to your account. If you’ve never had one before or you require a replacement book, you can request one by getting in touch with us via email or phone. Please note that cheques will take at least an additional working day to reach us but may take longer if you miss the cut-off time at your local Post Office branch. The cut-off time varies from branch to branch so please check with a member of staff at your local Post Office for further details. Please also note that you won’t be able to pay in cash using the Post Office.

As paying for your orders at Post Offices and HSBC branches eliminates the need to post us your payments, this will not only reduce your carbon footprint, but it will also save you the cost of a stamp! In addition, we also support online payments and bank transfer services. You can click on the “pay now button” area on your digital invoice and it will take you directly to the payment section online.

FIND YOUR NEAREST POST OFFICE > Simply place your cheque, along with your completed pre-printed personal playing in slip, into an HSBC branded envelope (provided by the Post Office). Seal the envelope, complete the details on the front of the envelope and hand it in over the Post Office counter. The Post Office will provide a receipt for the envelope. FIND YOUR NEAREST HSBC > If it’s more convenient for you to pay at your local HSBC branch, you can use any HSBC branch to pay cash or a cheque. If it’s a mixture of cash and cheque, please use a slip for cash and another for cheques.

Bank transfer - please remit funds in GBP

to HSCB Bank, sort code 40-34-21, account 71271164, quoting your customer account number. For international transfers, please use IBAN number GB31HBUK40342171271164.

Debit/credit card payments – please visit https://www.traidcraftshop.co.uk and go to My Account or call Sales Support Team on 0191 491 0855.

Cheque – please send cheque payments to the

address supplied on your document, quoting your account number on the reverse of all items.

* N.B. Changes made online regarding your contact information will only apply to correspondence and will not be transferred over to your financial preferences - this needs to be done here in Gateshead. Please don’t be concerned if you currently do not have access to an email address, call us on 0191 491 0855 and select option 3 to discuss alternatives. If you need to contact us we would appreciate it if you wait until after the initial upgrade, we will continue to send paper documents in the meantime. 9

40 Birthday Celebrations! th

A huge thanks goes out to Theresa Ely for sending in these wonderful pictures from her Big Brew garden party, celebrating Traidcraft’s 40th birthday. Theresa has been a Fairtrader for 35 years and is still going strong – and making delicious cakes too by the looks of it.

We’d also like to extend our thanks to Sheila Marchant from Ayr, who celebrated Traidcraft’s 40th birthday at her local Holy Fair by raffling a Traidcraft birthday cake. She sent us this lovely photo of cake winner, Aimee, who looks particularly pleased with her prize. We’re thrilled to hear that cake doesn’t just look yummy, but was sweetened using Traidcraft sugar!

On the 14th of September we will be holding a celebration service at St. Nicholas Cathedral, Newcastle. The event will be preceded by our AGM. All are welcome to both events. However, only shareholders will be eligible to vote and will be given priority for public questions. Space in the cathedral is limited, so it is vital you register your attendance. Update from Robin

Traidcraft CEO, Robin Roth, on Pesticides, Nitrogen in Our Soil and Organic Farming

Over the last few months I have been sharing my thoughts with you. You may feel that they have been a little eclectic: coffee pricing, falling foul of Fairtrade Standards, organic farming… The common theme is transparency: once you start opening Pandora’s box on food and where it comes from, you can’t shut it. Most consumers consume and the fewer the questions asked, the better. Where the “stuff” they buy comes from is not important, only the price is. This month I want to push the envelope a little further. I hope you will stay with me because, as always, once you scratch the surface, things begin to get interesting.

12

In last month’s bulletin, I talked about organic farming – often ridiculed as some middleclass niche and of no health benefit to the consumer. In fact, organic farming is critical for securing our future food supplies in the face of climate change.

‘Organic farming is critical for securing our future food supplies in the face of climate change.’ Most of the food that we eat today comes from so-called “conventional” farming methods, which is a wonderful euphemism, since chemical farming (or giving it is real name, “industrialised” farming) only really began in the 1920s. Before then, all farming was largely organic and fertiliser was provided by rotation farming, composting, iguana excrement (yes, really), other animal waste products or lime. There was a constant battle to replenish the earth’s nutrients after each crop, and the key elements to lush growth are nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium (NPK).

Until 1913, the only nitrogen available to agriculture was provided by nature, and this came in relatively small amounts. Nitrogen is the most common element in the atmosphere, but it is highly, highly reactive and in the atmosphere is bonded together in N3 molecules which are virtually unbreakable. In fact, the only way to get nitrogen out of the air and into the soil is through lightening. The air is heated up to 1000s of degrees, nitrogen is released for a split second and bonds with rain to form diluted nitric acid which drops on the earth. Alternatively, it is sucked up by certain plants from small beetles in exchange for sugar. Otherwise, it comes back into circulation via decomposing matter. Nitrogen is a powerful and, until recently, rare element in the soil.

In 1913, a German scientist called Fritz Haber, discovered how to fix nitrogen in a laboratory, and together with the Bosch chemical company, found a way of doing so on an industrial scale (The Haber Bosch process). Suddenly, you could buy nitrogen in a bag (fertiliser) and food production went through the roof. It is now estimated that 50% of the nitrogen in non-atmospheric circulation has been produced synthetically since the 1910s.

Literally half of your body’s nitrogen is from a factory.

As chemical farming took root, the world followed other “developments”: pesticides, herbicides, mono-crop farming, uprooting forest for commodity crops, intensive livestock keeping made possible via the use of antibiotics (again on an industrial scale). The result of all this chemical farming: a lot of highly dangerous, poisonous (after all the word “pesticide” means, literally “killer of pests”) chemical compounds in an environment that isn’t designed to absorb it.

We are now beginning to pay for the consequences of too much nitrogen in the earth’s eco systems. We are now beginning to pay for the consequences of too much nitrogen in the earth’s eco systems: N2O, one of the gases released from chemical farming, is over 250x more powerful as a greenhouse gas than CO2. And ultimately, nitrogen that remains bonded in water flows into the world’s oceans. Designed, of course, to promote growth, they trigger enormous algae blooms, which in turn suck oxygen out of the sea creating dead zones. Fritz Haber, incidentally, went on to develop the first industrially produced chemical weapons and personally led the very first use of them in the Western trenches in 1915.

...or put another way, half of the world’s population only exists because of factories dotted round the world.

13

So, “conventional” farming - the stuff that most consumers think of as natural, while the organic stuff is somehow “weird”, is systematically, and now very quickly, poisoning the earth we depend on. It is one of the great marketing campaigns of the last century that managed to convince us that what is poisoning us should be called the “the green revolution”, whereas naturallybased, restorative farming practices have been branded as somehow whacky or “newagey”. Governments subsidise chemical farming with huge amounts of tax payer payments because cheap food is the basis of stable societies.

Want to do something for climate change? Stop eating “conventional food” to avoid the chemicals Eat local food to stop all those food miles adding up Eat more real food (stuff that doesn’t come in a box or whose ingredients list you don’t understand.) Eat fair, eat organic and eat local.

Food production, transport and processing, however, produces around 30% of all Green House Gas emissions. Most of that is caused by the chemically intensive way in which food is grown for us.

Our relationship with food needs to change if we are to begin to combat climate change. Contrary to popular opinion, food does not come from supermarkets. It comes from farms.

‘Supporting farmers is one of Traidcraft’s proudest achievements.’

Supporting farmers is one of Traidcraft’s proudest achievements. Many of our partners are organic pioneers and we have supported them on their journey. Their organic farming practices, combined with multi-cropping and careful soil management, have always been much more labour intensive than chemical farming. But while fair, organic food may be expensive, the alternative is, literally, costing the earth.

Support your local or fair trade farmer and be part of the solution, not the problem.

Postcards from Southern India

The coastal and mountainous landscapes of southern India give a stunning backdrop to our journey but it’s leaving the tourist trail, visiting lesser-known gems and invitations into villages and communities that makes this trip special. Here are our highlights:

Cultural Heritage

From deliciously green Kerala to the cultural and historical riches of Tamil Nadu, this trip has it all. We first discover the brightly coloured Hindu temple complex in Madurai before heading to the coast to enjoy peaceful Pondicherry and the incredible stone carvings at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Mahabalipuram.

Delicious Food

With such a rich natural bounty of fruits, vegetables and spices, Kerala is a haven for foodies. Vegetarian and fish dishes top the local menus and the mighty coconut influences much of the food and you can expect many mild and deliciously fragrant dishes full of notes of lemongrass and cardamom. When eating with the farmers lunch may well be served on a freshly picked banana leaf!

Amazing Wildlife

Colourful birds and monkeys may be daily sightings on our travels but a stop at Thekaddy promises a further insight into India’s natural wonders. A glimpse of the elusive tiger may be only for the very lucky, but spotting a family of wild elephants bathing on the misty lake shores is plenty reward for a morning boat trip.

Fair Trade and Farming

See cashew nuts ripening on the trees, coffee cherries being harvested from bushes, and the abundance of spices growing interconnectedly; with pepper vines growing up cinnamon trees, and cloves and ginger growing in the shade. As we are led through the smallholdings we also hear from famers of the importance of guarding this biodiversity and about their projects on improving gender equality and food security for their farmers – a truly memorable visit! Join us in January! For more information visit www.meetthepeopletours.co.uk/india or contact Hannah and Lizzie on 0191 2651110 or info@skedaddle.com to find out more.

Jude’s Visit to St. Michaels “This week, I had the pleasure of visiting the wonderful Fairtrade at St. Michaels shop, tucked away in the heart of Oxford. Like so many of your stalls and shops, it is an Aladdin’s cave of enticing fair trade, ethical and sustainably sourced treats, all displayed so beautifully!” - Jude, Sales Executive B2B

Q&A with Daniella Cromwell, from St. Michaels How many years have you worked with Traidcraft?

I have worked in the shop five and a half years, since January 2014.

How did you first get into fair trade? When I got the job as Assistant Manager at Fairtrade at St. Michaels. This was my first introduction to the fair trade world which I previously had known very little about. The job was initially temporary for maternity cover. It has since turned into being permanent and long term!

Which producer story has really stood out to you over the years? My trip to visit the Hands of Hope project in Nong Khai, Northern Thailand in July 2017 has impacted me the most. 16

A little background of the project:

This project, which gives dignity to those living with HIV/AIDS, by providing them with employment through the making of cards and stationary out of Saa paper (from the mulberry tree), is one of the many branches of good work that has been born out of the work of the Good Shepherd Sisters in Nong Khai. In the early 2000s, during an AIDS epidemic in the north eastern part of Thailand, many were ostracized from their families and communities due to the stigma attached to the disease. The Garden of Friendship, created by the Good Shepherd Sisters in 2008, offered a space for patients to rest and recuperate once they were finished at the hospital when they may have had nowhere else to go. Thanks to antiretroviral medicine and ongoing care and support from the sisters, many of those that began here are now working for the Hands of Hope project.

My trip:

July 2017 was my first opportunity, since working for Fairtrade at St. Michaels, to get to meet some of our producers of products that we sell in the shop. In this case, it was the Hands of Hope project. Run by Antonia, who is from Adelaide, it was inspiring for me to see a “foreng meaning foreigner in Thai, be like a mother to the entire community, speaking fluent Thai and managing a space where the workers are clearly happy and enjoying their work. I was welcomed in like a family member and would have happily stayed for longer if I could. It is wonderful to be the buyer of crafts and homeware for Fairtrade at St. Michaels and to get to sell all of our wonderfully handcrafted products to our customers in our little basement shop in Oxford. It makes it all the more rewarding when you see their joy on buying a unique, handmade item, to then be able to tell them about the person behind it. Getting to meet the producers, seeing where these products are being made, hearing their stories and how their lives have been impacted in such transformative ways has been one of the best parts of my job so far.

What does fair trade mean to you? It means a community and network of people (traders, producers, suppliers, activists, the list goes on) from all walks of life, of varying backgrounds, working, creating and collaborating together, doing their best to make a small difference in the world.

It means putting the person first before any aim to make a profit. It means going beyond what you might normally do, working for the best outcome for all. Looking for the highest good in a person despite the odds.

Our government wants to roll out the red carpet for big business in trade deals after Brexit - with courts that give them special powers to sue poor countries for millions.

TOGETHER WE CAN STOP THIS. WILL YOU JOIN US?

This month we’re launching a new campaign putting the spotlight on a controversial court system that gives big business special powers to sue poor countries for millions... Away from the public eye, our government wants to roll out the red carpet for big business by including a little-known court system called ISDS (or investor-state dispute settlement) in postBrexit trade deals with poor countries. It’s a system where profits trump everything. Where the most powerful companies can challenge governments if they dare to put their people above company profits.

ahead of company profits, the tribunal ordered Argentina to pay out £251 million. The situation in Argentina is far from unique – in fact, it’s just one of over 900 cases brought against countries so far. But it doesn’t have to be this way. That’s why we’ve teamed up with other organisations to persuade the government to change this. More than 30,000 people have already signed a petition calling on the government to take ‘red carpet courts’ out of UK trade and investment deals. Will you add your voice?

Like in Argentina, where the government froze water prices in a financial crisis to make sure it stayed affordable for the poorest communities. In response, water companies including Anglian Water used the ISDS system to sue the government for ‘lost profits’. Instead of ruling that people’s human right to water should come

We’d love you too join our campaign - here’s what you can do! Sign our petition and share with your friends Order your free postcards and flyers here 21
