Choosing to buy fair trade, future-proof ethical food and drink is everyday activism, and is the simplest way to change the world.
FIGHT FOR YOUR FUTURE We don’t want people to buy less,

70% of food comes from poor smallholders in Africa, Asia and Latin America, but their soil is marginal and being rapidly destroyed by climate change. We must rethink and democratise all our supply chain systems now, or else in the next 30 years, the supermarkets will be empty. Traidcraft should lead the way. ECO-PHOTOGRAPHY We used a local photographer for all our new AW19 imagery. Located in picturesque Northumberland, near Morpeth, CTP’s eco-friendly studio regularly runs off-grid. With 10 kilowatt solar panels on the roof, the studio offsets 11.5 tonnes of carbon annually (11,534 kilowatt hours energy generated). Inside the studio, all internal lighting is LED, which uses 360 watts per hour, opposed to one kilowatt per hour for standard strip lights. Any excess energy generated is sold back to the grid or tops up the water tank.

Q&A
WITH ALEX URBAN, TRAIDCRAFT’S C O F F E E C O N S U LTA N T last three full days being our exams – it was a pretty intense exam! So many cups of coffee were drank and the last afternoon I caught myself thinking, “I am not going to drink any coffee anymore”.
We pride ourselves in continually supplying you with new and exciting fair trade products to not just taste, but to experience. This is why we asked our very own, Q Arabica Graded coffee consultant, Alex Urban, to pair our coffees with our chocolate, to help us deliver the ultimate taste experience to our customers. What exactly is a Q Arabica Grader? A Q Grader is an internationally accepted certificate that you need to have in order to assess coffee samples according to a certain standard. The scoring system used by Q Graders allows coffee to be scored and described as objectively as possible and according to the same quality standards all over the world. How many people have your Q Arabica Grader qualification? In the UK there are only 83 and around 4,000-5,000 in the entire world. How many exams have you had to take to achieve your highly-regarded Q Arabica Grader status? 19. All of the exams were in a coffee school and laboratory in central Edinburgh. The lab had all windows covered with paper and taped so that no sunlight could come in. During the sensory exams, it was completed illuminated in red light (so that we could focus only on the flavour of the cup and would not be detracted by our vision). We spent six days in this lab for the “Q course”, up to 10 hours daily, the
“Good coffee for me also means organic, fair and has direct trade and transparency along the supply chain.” 10 traidcraftshop.co.uk
How do you differentiate a good coffee from a bad one? A good coffee for me is a coffee where everybody involved in the supply chain has done his/ her best, starting with the farmers, farm management, harvesting, processing, storing, transport, roasting and preparation of the coffee to name some of the steps. Good coffee for me also means organic, fair and has direct trade and transparency along the supply chain. A good coffee of course means also good quality, i.e. the taste. What is your most memorable cup of coffee? When I was visiting a coop, United Organic Coffee Growers, located at Mount Elgon, close to Mbale in Northern Uganda, I was offered a cup and without thinking, I said yes. It took about an hour and 10 people at least to prepare the coffee. Drinking this coffee, whilst looking at the mountains and coffee gardens and being amongst the proud coffee farmers who had grown and made it was definitely something i’ll never forget.

HOW IS TRAIDCRAFT GROUND COFFEE D E C A F F E I N AT E D ? Check out the blog on our website for more information and a closer look at our decaf diagram. We get a lot of questions about how our ground decaf coffee is decaffeinated, as customers seeking ground decaf coffee are often worried that the process may be harsh, harmful or full of chemicals. Decaffeination has come a long way since Ludwig Roselius first discovered how to extract caffeine from beans in 1903. His decaffeination process used benzene, a solvent now known to be a carcinogen, which might explain why the process has a worrying reputation preceding it. Even some modern methods involve washing beans in harsh solvents which slowly removes caffeine, but not ours. The method which we implement for our coffee beans is an organic process; a simple, organic, toxic solvent-free extraction using CO2 and water. There are no residues or toxic by-products in our decaffeination method. CO2 is an organic substance of great purity, and in its supercritical state (between a liquid and a gas), it’s a gentle replacement for toxic solvents which are known historically to be used during decaffeination. The CO2 spares the aromatic and flavourful proteins and carbohydrates within the beans, and only extracts the caffeine, leaving you with the same delicious coffee, simply without the caffeine!

El Ceibo, in Bolivia was one of the very first fair trade suppliers of cocoa used in Traidcraft’s first chocolate bars. They were founded in 1977 and represent almost 50 small cooperatives of cocoa producers. El Ciebo has thrived through fair trade and managed to add value to their cocoa beans by processing themselves at their factory in El Alto where the beans are transformed into cacoa powder, cocoa butter and chocolate, rather than selling to bigger traders. traidcraftshop.co.uk 19

Together with Serendipalm and Natural Habitats, Traidcraft have defied industry norms in creating the ultimate sustainably sourced palm oil. FairPalm is causing real waves across the globe; there’s no usage of any chemical nasties to increase production or reduce pests, as organic methods are used which encourages palm fruits to grow in the most natural of ways. The FairPalm label guarantees that the process of creating the oil involves fair pay, makes direct links between smallholders and consumers, as well as focusing on high environmental standards.

When our ‘broken grain rice’ from Myanmar (formally Burma) was no longer needed for the discontinued GEOBARS and GEOSTICKS, we were left with 20 tonnes of perfectly good and tasty rice! We love rice here at Traidcraft HQ, but that’s a lot to get through, even for us! Only 25% of our ‘broken rice’ is actually broken, which we’ve mostly sieved out. We’ve packaged up the remaining long grain rice in Tropical Wholefoods bags. So, if you’re looking for a store cupboard staple, this is an excellent option.

W I T H R A C H E L K E L LY, T H O U G H T CLOTHING CO-FOUNDER
With a motto of ‘Wear Me, Love Me, Mend Me, Pass Me On’, Thought are all about opening up the conversation about sustainable fashion, and aim to educate people about the small steps they can take in order to make a difference. We caught up with Rachel Kelly, co-founder of Thought Clothing, to talk all things slow, ethical fashion and find out a little bit more about this forward-thinking and innovative brand. How is Thought unique on the market? Our force of nature fabrics are a huge part of what makes us unique; this refers to our sustainable fabrics made using materials such as Organic cotton, bamboo and Tencel. Our prints are commissioned and created exclusively for us, which makes them really special. How do you select the products in your range? As we are all about slow, ethical fashion; it’s definitely a longer process than your average clothing brand. We have a passionate design team who consider countless silhouettes, colours and prints. They do this to craft contemporary, sustainable clothing. Key pieces that are effortless in style, flattering in fit. Pieces are designed to become classics you’ll return to time and again. When you’re shopping for clothes, what do you look for? I love clothes and fashion but having been in the sustainable clothing industry for so long now, I am really careful about where I put my money. Besides

Minimising our footprint, being thoughtful of how we produce our clothing, and designing long lasting slow fashion styles that our customers will love and cherish for years to come — all form the foundations of how we want to do business. What are Thought’s hopes for the future? We want to be a leading light as a positive change maker in the sustainable fashion industry. We hope to showcase to other businesses that you can grow a strong and profitable business, whilst being value driven.

NAMASTE Back in 1995, Namaste’s founder, Sam Brummitt, flew to Kathmandu, Nepal with a round the world ticket. He jetted off purely in search of adventure, but little did he know the scale of the adventure which awaited him... After an inspirational trek to Mount Everest base camp, followed by a six-month long road trip circumnavigating the Indian Subcontinent on re-conditioned ex-Indian Army motorbikes and sleeping beneath the stars at the side of the road most nights, the idea for the business slowly developed. Sam was amazed by the incredible kindness and hospitality of the local people and quickly developed a fascination with and a passion for this amazing country. But, at this point, Sam’s
Recycled Crayons Clock Carefully crafted by artisans using recycled crayons. Dia 20cm 63824 £44.99
idea for a business was nothing more than just that, an idea. It was a chance conversation with Ganpat, an owner of a textile business, in Rajasthan, which sparked the idea that Sam should come back home and set up the business for real. Thus, Namaste was born. Apart from being a lifelong friend, Ganpat is now a key supplier for Namaste, closing the circle perfectly. Namaste, named after a popular greeting, translates as ‘I greet the spirit within you’ and was founded in 1997. For Sam, starting a business meant earning a living while putting something back into such a beautiful and wonderful part of the world and that’s exactly what happened. Over two decades on, Namaste’s mission to bring hope to the lives of artisans around the world remains the same, as well as still being fully committed to ensuring that products, where possible, are made from environmentallyfriendly, sustainable and recycled materials. 50 traidcraftshop.co.uk

CRISIL TIMELESS GLASSWARE Crisil is a family-run social enterprise based in Cochabamba, Bolivia, who create timeless glassware made from 100% recycled glass, washed and processed in eco-friendly conditions. Set up in the early ‘90s by two brothers, Carlos and Walter Bustos, Crisil’s mission has always been to create beautiful and functional glassware with the environment at the heart of everything they do. Crisil utilises traditional methods of production, to satisfy the requirements of national and international markets. During the glass making process, glass is broken into tiny pieces, washed in clean water, and then melted in the natural gas furnace. In order to preserve natural resources and minimize waste, the artisans are always sure to use as little water as possible during this step. The glass becomes a stretchy, viscose mass, which is mouth-blown and shaped into cups, jugs, ornaments, and all manner of innovative glass pieces.
Recycled Barrel Highball Glasses H12cm. Set of 2. 64996 £10
As well as caring for the environment by using completely recycled materials and implementing heating recirculation systems to use less gas for the kilns, Crisil focuses a great deal on job security and working conditions for their artisans. There are 90 artisan glassworkers in total at Crisil, but support from Crisil reaches much further, touching the lives of over 500 families in the region. All glassworkers are given up to date training, accident insurance, and ongoing learning opportunities to develop their craft skills. The workshops are places of collaboration, where glassworkers, regardless of class, place of origin or gender, can produce works of art together. This makes for a completely diverse workforce, with people from many different social groups and ethnic backgrounds coming together to share their skills. 58 traidcraftshop.co.uk

Where in the World?
Traidcraft has established meaningful relationships with producers and suppliers from all around the world, some of which we’ve been working with since the very beginning, almost 40 years ago! We’ve also formed relationships with new suppliers and producers over the years, bringing an ever-increasing range of products to homes around the UK. This is a list of the fair trade suppliers we’ve collaborated with to curate our range of handcrafted collectables and incredible edibles this season.
BOLIVIA ANAPQUI Established in 1983, Anapqui is dedicated to improving the living conditions of rural farmers in Bolivia and promoting organic agriculture. You can find their quinoa in our pasta. COINACAPA This cooperative collects the Brazil nuts that fall from Amazonian rainforest trees. More than 1000 families benefit from exporting Brazils nuts, resulting in improvements to healthcare in a region prone to malaria and dengue fever. CRISIL Crisil is a family-run social enterprise based in Cochabamba, Bolivia. It was set up in 1991 by two brothers, Carlos and Walter Bustos, who wanted to create beautiful glassware using ecofriendly methods. EL CEIBO

B U R K I N A FA S O GEBANA Gebana D’Afrique works with 25 local cooperatives of mango growers, as well as providing employment for those involved in drying and processing the fruit. Drying mango is a great way to preserve and add value to this seasonal fruit.
CHILE APICOOP A long-standing supplier of honey to Traidcraft, Apicoop supports over 300 producers in southern Chile with a mission to promote the social, cultural and economic development of small and medium beekeepers and to sell their honey at fair prices. MIFRUTA This small cooperative of around 25 members was formed in 2009, and supported into fair trade by Traidcraft. Through working together with Traidcraft, the cooperative has improved soil management and yields.

ECUADOR NATURAL HABITATS Natural Habitats has been producing organic palm oil since 2009, with small farmers who believe in the benefits of organic agriculture - living proof that the controversial commodity palm oil can be produced without negative impact on biodiversity and positively benefit small farmers. Used in Traidcraft’s Clean & Fair brand as well as biscuits.
E S WAT I N I BLACK MAMBA As well as great quality products that regularly win ‘Great Taste’ awards, Black Mamba partners with over 60 local growers of chilli, coriander and basil, mostly women, paying them fair prices and providing training in organic agriculture.
OROMIA The Oromia Coffee Farmer Cooperative Union represents the interests of more than 350 cooperatives and over 300,000 small farmers across Ethiopia – the country where arabica coffees originated. Traidcraft uses organic and conventional coffees from a variety of the cooperatives.
GHANA SERENDIPALM Serendipalm produces certified fair trade and organic palm oil, without the large infrastructure and monoculture cropping used by most palm oil manufacturers. The proceeds of fair trade have helped transform the community with investments in essentials such as healthcare, infrastructure and provision of clean water. Used in Traidcraft’s Clean & Fair brand as well as biscuits.
G U AT E M A L A CIPAC This small cooperative of around 150 members initially produced honey and then after a period of support and assistance from Traidcraft, started to trade coffee beans which are used in the Traidcraft brand of instant coffee

They focus on agro-ecological work, as well as running a variety of social projects, including tackling domestic violence and supporting scholarships for young people.
