Climate change is

real.

Climate change is happening But it’s

now.

not too late!

Here at Traidcraft, the environment is so important to us. For over 40 years, we’ve built long-lasting relationships with innovative partners from all over the world, and brought their goods directly to you. We are increasingly concerned and worried about the killer effects climate change is having on us and our partners. As one coffee farmer told us, each year the co-operative is having to plant its coffee bushes further up the mountain to escape the rampant infestations plaguing the valleys due to the warmer weather. At some point, he told us, you run out of mountain, and what does he do then? Whilst world leaders make commitments to help prevent climate change acceleration, we’re looking into how can we reduce our carbon outputs as individuals.

Our Eco-Friendly Product Range

The Parcels We Despatch

Who We Work With

We pride ourselves on providing a carefully curated selection of fair trade and ethical goods, each season. From fair trade food and drink, to handmade crafts and slow, sustainable fashion, everything in our collection has been selected with the environment in mind.

One significant step on our journey to becoming the ultimate eco-business is how we package your orders. We’ve recently switched to paper tape and paper void fill, and use compostable bags to package liquids.

As well as small-scale producers and ethical third party companies, we choose who we work with very seriously. From the printers we use for publications, to the couriers who deliver your parcels and the photographers we use for photoshoots, the environmental credentials are the first thing we look at.

Team Traidcraft’s John and Andrea using eco-friendly materials to package your orders

We want to facilitate your journey to becoming an even more conscious shopper. Investing in future-proof products from environmentally-conscious companies like Traidcraft is a great way to ensure you’re doing your bit. From the food you eat and the products you clean your home with, to the gifts you give and clothes you wear, there are a wealth of wonderfully sustainable options available to you. We hope this booklet gives you some ideas and inspiration of ways you can reduce your carbon output and #BuyRight. 1. Shop Fair Trade One seemingly small switch to a fair trade product, can make a huge difference to your carbon footprint. But how? What is the link between fair trade and the environment, we hear you ask. Let us explain… The economic and social benefits of fair trade and its impact on the people throughout the supply chains is an easier link to visualise. Fair trade is when the price we pay for products such as food, drink, fashion and crafts, gives enough to producers to cover the cost of their products – and to have enough left over to invest in their farms, or businesses. It’s not just about survival, it’s about improving year on year and building resilience. And on top of that, producers can receive a “social bonus”, that can be invested in healthcare, education – and anything else they

think will bring their community the most benefit. So, where does the environment come into it? Fair trade farmers and artisans respect and care for the environment. These producers are among those who are seeing the most damaging effects of climate change, despite being among those who have the smallest carbon output. Buying fair trade ensures that the needs of the planet, as well as people, have been met within the process of making, growing or harvesting.

Many fair trade farmers and producers care for the environment by committing to a range of eco-activities including: Maximising their use of sustainable energy and raw materials Minimising waste and pollution, often by using recycled materials within their craft Reducing their water usage Protecting the soil by practicing organic farming methods (more on organic farming coming up!) Reducing deforestation by intercropping trees and crops Receiving training on mitigating the killer effects of climate change

DID YOU KNOW? Unsustainable palm oil cultivation leads to mass deforestation. Through working with Serendipalm and Natural Habitats, Traidcraft has developed FairPalm – the world’s only fair trade, organic palm oil, which is harvested from palm trees grown amongst other trees, such as cocoa or flora trees - allowing them to grow naturally and eliminating the need to cut down trees. You can find FairPalm in our range of cookies.

2. Choose Organic

DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that it takes about 2,000 years of natural weather conditions to create just 10cm of natural soil?

Chemical pollution (pesticides) and unsustainable farming practices are destroying soil at a rapid rate. Without soil, we have no food. Consuming consciously, and choosing organic, fair trade and ethical where possible gives us the best chance of restoring the earth. Spending a little bit more money to help farmers who are committed to nourishing the earth is the beginning of an extraordinary journey. It’s not too late.

At Traidcraft, we have been supporting small-scale farmer co-operatives for over 40 years. We invest in the people who invest in the land that feeds us. Of course, it can be more expensive, but we see this investment as being part of the solution to our climate crisis.  From coffee and chocolate, to spreads and pulses, stocking up on Organic essentials has never been easier.

4. Plant Trees Planting trees is one of the biggest (and most reasonable!) ways to fight the climate crisis.

Trees are vital for the health of our planet. They absorb carbon, reducing harmful by-products of fossil-fuel burning, and improve air quality by releasing oxygen, as well as providing shade, shelter and safety for birds and other species. Trees also play a key role in capturing rainwater and reducing the risk of natural disasters like floods and landslides. As part of our campaign for environmental justice, last year, we boycotted Black Friday and planted a tree on behalf of every customer who placed and order on the day, and also offered customers the chance to plant additional trees simply by adding a bundle to their order. Our target was to plant 5,000 trees. By the end of the day, together we’d planted over 22,000 trees. See, isn’t it amazing what we can achieve together? Of course, we couldn’t possibly stop there. Post-Black Friday, we continue to support tree planting initiatives, offering you, our valued customers, the chance to bulk buy trees to be planted on your behalf and support environmental projects in Madagascar, Mozambique and Nicaragua.

The Three Rs

5. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle The amount of waste we produce each year is staggering. A significant amount of our waste will end in landfill, damaging the earth and in turn the nature, wildlife and humans who call it home.

Each time you consume, think of the three Rs. Can you REDUCE your waste – do you really need to buy this item? If yes, has the product been RECYCLED before it got to you, can the packaging be recycled into something

new, or REUSED for another inventive purpose? When choosing our range each season, we have the three Rs in mind too. For instance, have you seen our carefully curated range from Cycle of Good?

Cycle of Good create lasting products with a purpose; helping to end poverty in some of the poorest communities in the world, along with reducing waste, recycling where possible and caring for the environment. Cleverly crafting their products from materials which would have otherwise ended up in landfill, such as disused bicycle inner tubes and coffee sacks, Cycle of Good are turning waste into much lustedover goods. The trading surpluses obtained by Cycle of Good funds education, family support and life-changing, non-profit enterprise development in Malawi. 100% Recycled Bicycle Inner Tube Wallet 10016 £15.50

7. E A T It’s all go in the 21st century; 24-hour supermarkets have aisles as far as you can see, stocked with fruits and vegetables from all over the world. Our favourite produce is readily available, in abundance, all of the time. The majority of fruits and vegetables are being grown somewhere in the world in every season, so eating seasonally means eating produce that’s grown now, in your country.

Eating local, seasonal, fresh fruits and vegetables reduces the demand for out of season produce – minimizing the strain on resources for transportation of such goods. Apart from reducing your carbon output and supporting sustainable, local farmers, eating seasonally is kinder on your pocket, too. When produce is grown in artificial, managed conditions in your own country, or transported from another where it grows naturally, this costs money – which is passed on to the consumer.

8. Home Composting

Getting the balance right is key to producing great compost. Ideally, between 25-50% soft green materials (e.g. grass cuttings or vegetable/fruit kitchen waste) should be used on your compost heap. This will feed the micro-organisms and allow them to do their magic. The remainder should be woody, brown material (e.g. hedge trimmings – ideally shredded, wood chippings, paper/ cardboard – ideally shredded, straw, compostable packaging or dead leaves). - Royal Horticultural Society Chief Horticulturalist, Guy Barter
