Traidcraft Exchange Big Brew Last month, we had the pleasure of attending Traidcraft Exchange’s Big Brew event, over in their Newcastle offices. It was wonderful to catch up with colleagues from our sister charity, who we don’t get to see very often, and raise funds for their life changing work. With everything from lemon drizzle and red velvet cake, to homemade shortbread, scones and fondant fancies, and of course, as much Fairtrade tea and coffee as we could drink, we left feeling rather full to say the least!

Investors in People have started a movement to make working lives better. They reward businesses who put people first and who care about their employees’ worklife balance. Last month, we received the fantastic news that we’ve passed with flying colours! The fact that we've achieved this so soon after beginning our culture change programme to holacracy is something we’re really rather proud of.
Eco-Friendly Packaging Update from Traidcraft’s Carolyn We are passionate about environmental justice, which is why we are always looking for ways in which we can reduce our carbon output as a company. One significant step on our journey to becoming the ultimate eco-business is how we package your orders. Over the next few weeks, we are pleased to announce that we are going to be making the switch to both paper tape and paper void fill when packaging your fair trade goods for dispatch.
This eco-switch means:
1.48
TONNES
0.18
TONNES
0.92
TONNES
0.72
TONNES
Last year we used a total of 186 rolls of air film (which makes the recyclable air-filled pillows to protect your orders in transit). A switch to paper void fill will reduce our packaging plastic material by 1.488 tonnes and a CO2e output reduction of 0.18 tonnes.
Last year we used 3,024 rolls of plastic tape to seal your orders. The switch to paper tape means that we will save 0.992 tonnes of plastic material reduction and a CO2e output reduction of 0.720 tonnes.
Welcome,
Friends
It was with great sadness that we had to postpone last month’s roadshows. As the situation concerning Coronavirus develops, we are adapting our own plans and activities to ensure that we can keep our team safe and continue to service your needs. We are aware that many churches, workplaces and schools have been closed, so your normal selling activities will be affected. Please do keep safe and do not feel the need to take any unnecessary risks. Maybe you could send your customers a catalogue and an order form? You can then place their order on their behalf - simply put their details in the delivery address and we will do the rest. If you need extra catalogues to send to your regular customers, please ask. We have removed the maximum number of catalogues you can order from us, which we hope means that you can share more readily with customers, family and friends. Also, we had promised to get our Traidcraft Week resources out this week, but have decided that due to the current the Government restrictions in place, it would be a wise decision to postpone this event. However, we have exciting plans for the postponed event, in the form of a Traidcraft Week-meets-Big Brew Harvest joint celebration. More details to come! Finally, as Easter approaches, it gives us another moment to be thankful for the special gift that God gave us. On behalf of the team, thank you for all you do and continue to do. Happy fair trading, Matt
We also have an update from our friends at DPD about their Green Policy – keep your eyes peeled for more information about this coming to you shortly! traidcraftshop.co.uk

TEAM TRAIDCRAFT RECOMMENDS... KIRSTY "I love a good book, so I plan to get back into it over the next few weeks, as well as a bit of cross stitch! Below are a couple of recommendations from my two favourite authors" A Chilling Crime Thriller! Lazy Bones – Mark Billingham "Lazy Bones is an exciting, well-written crime thriller that starts off with a chilling opening and ends with a bang. I was hooked from the first page and found myself not wanting to put the book down until I reached its conclusion, which was shocking yet satisfying (and certainly not contrived)". For Murder Mystery Fans! House Rules – Jodi Picoult "I really enjoyed this book. You get a lot of insight into the world of Asperger's Syndrome, plus a really intriguing mystery to solve. I love when an author has the skill in storytelling to keep you engaged from start to finish.”
FROM PLASTIC BOTTLES TO PLASTIC LIMBS
RIO "I love checking out The Happy Newspaper for my daily dose of positivity! The idea behind this website is that every single day, there are people doing incredible things in the world and helping each other out, but they aren’t recognised – this is the place where they can be celebrated! Here I have shared one of their recent stories.”
De Montfort University engineers in collaboration with prosthetic experts in India and other UK universities, have developed a new technique which aims to help address two important issues: the high cost of prosthetic limbs and the problem of plastic pollution. The process creates sockets for prostheses (to join them to the patient's body) from recycled plastic water bottles, dramatically cutting the cost of each unit - from £500 to just £10 - and has the potential to improve the lives of many of the 100 million amputees worldwide, while saving healthcare providers millions of pounds and reducing plastic waste. It is thought that this is the first-time recycled plastic has been used in this way. Initially ground down into granules, it is spun into a lightweight solid which is moulded to a shape tailored for each user. Two prototypes were created, to be tested in India by two legamputee patients from the world's largest rehabilitation charity (Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahavata Samiti). Results were positive and they are now looking to undertake a further, larger study. traidcraftshop.co.uk

SARAH “As there are restrictions on what we can do with our free time at the moment, I'm using my weekends to get on top of the gardening. I have always loved sunflowers; I think they’re so bright and cheery, and remind me of being in school, planting them in tiny pots and watching them grow on the classroom windowsill. Lots of our neighbours plant sunflowers around this time of year – it's a bit of a tradition in our area. Last year, we had the tallest sunflower on the street - it was about double the height of me! I’m in the process of planting this year’s seeds in the hope of maintaining our title!”
THANK YOU! Despite all that’s going on, we are feeling the love from you lot at the moment! Your wonderful comments mean the world to us and are really keeping us going right now. In fact, we’ve printed many of your comments off and stuck them up around the building, as a constant reminder that you’re backing us all the way.
Well done Traidcraft for keeping us going in these concerning days. We are grateful, stay safe Gina Cox

I have been reading all Traidcraft’s online updates and am so thankful and grateful for everything you do, all your hard work to keep the operation going during this time. I think you are the most amazing, inspiring team of people. Maggie Varco
Our whole church community is so grateful! Hilary Belden
Thank you for all you do there – it’s wonderful that in these times we can still support your producer partners through your work, at a time when that support is most needed. God bless you in all that you are doing. Please take care, and be safe. Lots of love to you all from Chester.
Dear Robin and the Traidcraft team, It is good to hear that you are able to keep trading in these unsettled times. We have, as a church, closed our doors at present but I have brought all of my stock home and hope to continue selling to our church members via email. I intend to try and combine my exercise for the day and deliveries by parking up and walking from the delivery address - for as long as I am able to. Who knows how long that will be? Thank you for all your dedication and hard work. Stay safe. Anne

DIVINE TREATS!
Hi, I’m one of the stall holders at Hayes Free Church. I was concerned that we hold stock which will be out of date by the time normal service (excuse pun) is resumed.
GREAT IDEA!
I have therefore suggested in a couple of places that Fairtraders should offload to food banks or parishioners living alone stock which will go out of date. Then, a month to 6 weeks before the church can reopen ask members what they would like to buy so that new stock may be ordered to suit demand. This should extend to all outlets such as charity shops which stock Fairtrade but are closed for the duration of the lockdown.
Dilys Corlett is showing her appreciation for her delivery drivers and posties with some Divine chocolate! What a lovely idea, Dilys.
I don’t know whether you could put this idea in a bulletin or circulate traders in your database. I would hate to see all that lovely perishable stock go to waste. With kind regards, Richard M Brown

Loving Father,
In these difficult days we turn to you.
Friends, Many of you know I live quite far from our offices in Gateshead. During recent days I have been working from home while the majority of our team are doing overtime, to keep up with orders in the warehouse. I have to say there have been times when I have felt out on a limb and that I have not been of much use. Listening to many of you who have had your sales activities halted by this situation, you may be having similar thoughts. So, each day I have committed some time to praying for our country and the unprecedented situation we find ourselves in. I also pray for my colleagues, for Traidcraft and our producers. I hope the prayer might be an encouragement for you all. For activists like us, it’s good to remember that although we might not be doing what we would like to be doing, we can always be of use. Peace, prayers and happy fair trading… Matt
We thank you for the work of the emergency services and key workers across our nation and ask for your hand of protection upon them. We also thank you for your Church and the work she is doing to help those most in need. For those who are sick, bring healing. For those who mourn, bring comfort. For those who face uncertainty financially, bring stability. For those who don’t know what to do, bring clarity. For those who are at risk, bring protection. For those who are frightened, bring calm. We ask these things also for our producers across the globe. Grant them reassurance that they are not forgotten and that we continue to stand with them. Continue to keep their routes to market open, their cashflow strong and protect their crop. We ask for wisdom for those in leadership positions, both locally and nationally as they seek to guide us through the coming days and ask also for peace in our land. Mighty God, for whom all things are known. We pray these things in the name of your son, Jesus Christ.
Amen

EVEN WHEN WE ARE KEPT APART, WE CAN ACT TOGETHER
A
BY ROBIN ROTH
s I write this, the country is still functioning relatively normally. By the time you read this, the realities of COVID-19 will have changed everything several times over. In the last few days, we have been inundated with orders, and most of the office staff have been down in the warehouse picking and packing orders to help get through this first wave. I have picked some of your orders – I recognise the names and the addresses – and as I have been walking around the warehouse, I have thought of you. I have good memories of our meetings, our talks and our shared values. Like everyone else, 14 traidcraftshop.co.uk
I am worried about my family and my friends and their health, but I am also worried about our “tribe” of social and economic justice warriors. Above all, I pray for your health, your well-being and your resilience in times of self-isolation and loneliness. We are discovering here at Traidcraft that having to work from home is not as pleasant as it sounds. We feel bored, useless, guilty that we are not somehow being part of the solution, when others are having to pull double shifts. These are real feelings and I imagine many of you – dedicated to a lifetime of serving, caring and helping – are probably also struggling deeply.
"ABOVE ALL, I PRAY FOR YOUR HEALTH, WELL-BEING AND YOUR RESILIENCE IN TIMES OF SELF-ISOLATION AND LONELINESS". Many of the communities that we work with in developing countries are extraordinarily isolated and community life is the glue that holds it all together. I would not want to idealise this because remote communities suffer additional layers of alcoholism, mental illness and boredom that city dwellers can, to some extent, mitigate. A visit to some coffee farmers in Thailand some years ago left me with an appreciation of just how isolated some farmers could be – only elephants could reach one remote village of a co-operative members to transport their coffee back through the jungle. And in Nepal some other farmers had to carry their coffee for over eight hours on their backs to get to the nearest paved road – and it wasn’t a particularly great road even then. What these communities did have, however, was a sense of unity. A single Nepalese coffee farmer was never going to be able to export his or her coffee to Europe, but as a community they had a chance, and indeed their coffee beans were wonderfully pure and tasty.
Experience from our friends in the fair trade world across Europe suggests that even in the worst of all lockdowns, we will still be able to operate, since we distribute food and cleaning materials. If we can be of any help to your local community, please let us know and we will deliver your orders directly to vulnerable folk at your request. Even when we are kept apart, we can act together. I am not sure there is a WFTO principle that captures this, so in true pirate fashion, I am making one up: WFTO Principle 11: Together we will do whatever it takes to get the job done.
TOGETHER WE WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET THE JOB DONE
We will no doubt be hearing a lot about our own communities in the coming week: being asked to make sure that we are looking after our most vulnerable neighbours, the homeless, the newly unemployed; and these responsibilities could feel overwhelming. We are trying to think of ways we can be pro-active and part of the solution. traidcraftshop.co.uk

GOOD TASTE SHEFFIELD CELEBRATE THEIR FIFTH BIRTHDAY! We love getting out and about, visiting the individuals behind the wonderful fair trade businesses we work with. Last month, Traidcraft’s Jude travelled to Sheffield to help the fair trade shop Good Taste celebrate their fifth birthday and to chat to their manager about all things fair trade. Here’s how she got on.
“Last month I had the pleasure of visiting Good Taste, the Sheffield fair trade shop, and joined them in their fifth anniversary celebrations. Not only is their shop a wonderful place, selling a beautiful range of fair trade goods, what is most impressive is that each year Jenny Coleman and her team donate their profits to TASTE, a local charity that provides safe, clean water and sanitation facilities to remote villages in Nigeria. So, the birthday celebrations were made extra special as they handed over a cheque for £5,500 to Ben Udejiofo, the CEO of TASTE, and BBC Breakfast Television’s Dan Walker, who is Patron of the charity. A massive congratulations to everyone at Good Taste!” Q&A with Jenny Coleman of Good Taste Sheffield 16 traidcraftshop.co.uk
Q&A WITH
JENNY COLEMAN OF GOOD TASTE SHEFFIELD Jude: Did you first get into fair trade five years ago when Good Taste Sheffield opened, or does your relationship with fair trade go further back than that? I had been selling fair trade goods for about 15 years before we opened the shop, mainly for Tearcraft but also for Traidcraft, and had been on a couple of Tearcraft tours to meet producers in Peru and India. My children have many happy memories of unpacking exciting boxes of beautiful craft items and setting up stalls and events both in our home and in churches. Jude: When selecting products to stock your shop, which credentials do you consider? We belong to BAFTS (the British Association of Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers) which guarantees to our customers that we are genuine in our commitment to the 10 principles of fair trade, and many of our suppliers we choose are also members. We buy relatively small amounts from many different companies, as our customers have different tastes and we try to have something for
Jenny Coleman & daughter Lucy
(almost) everyone. We have established friendly relationships with our suppliers over the years and really want to support them all! Jude: Apart from Fairtrade Fortnight, which events do you celebrate throughout the year? We celebrate Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day etc., but our daughter Lucy, who writes all our social media posts, also highlights many special national and international days such as International Women's Day. Jude: Are there any fair trade products which you personally couldn't be without? Coffee is one of my main requirements to get through the day! I also like a bit of chocolate after dinner in the evening. We get through huge quantities of the brown Kilombero rice in our house too, and through the work of the shop have now sold nearly 2,500 bags of this delicious rice, enabling rice farmers in Malawi to support their children's education. Jenny’s Fair Trade Shopping List: • Fair trade coffee • Fair trade chocolate • Brown Kilombero rice traidcraftshop.co.uk
17
Jude: What has been your best-selling product over the five years? The Thought bamboo socks are my bestselling product generally, but we also find that recycled and upcycled products sell very well. Our customers like anything made from bicycle chains or similar and the small key bowl was one of our most successful products.
Jude: Do you find there are any obstacles or challenges within your industry?
I have found on my visits to producers that we have the same values, dreams and hopes for our children and our families and am pleased to be able to help them achieve those. This is my way of changing the world for people who deserve a better chance in life.
Traidcraft products line the shelves
One of our main challenges is cash flow through the year. Our sales during November and December are amazing and customers often remark how well appreciated the gifts they buy from us are by the recipients. Occasionally I tell customers that fair trade is not just for Christmas, and that we need a reasonable level of support throughout the year, or we may not be here next Christmas! Jude: What does fair trade mean to you personally? I love the connection with the producers that I get from selling these beautiful products. I tried working in a developing country when I first qualified as a nurse and discovered that it wasn't really for me. 18 traidcraftshop.co.uk

This Easter, could you help a small farm to flourish, so a family can thrive? For many, the world feels like a bleak place at the moment. But in the small village of Bujela in Tanzania, there is reason to be cheerful. There, more farmers like Rosta are enjoying a much happier Easter this year than last – and that’s all thanks to amazing people like you. When Rosta’s husband passed away many years ago, she was faced with a daunting task: to farm the family’s half acre of tea and half acre of coffee, alone. That’s no mean feat for anyone, especially when you have four young children and live in an isolated, rural area with no running water or electricity.
Rosta has a disability in her legs and must sit to labour through the entire coffee process – from picking and pulping to washing and drying. With no option but to sell to low-paying traders, Rosta couldn’t earn enough to send her children to school, pay for medical care or rebuild the family home. “The house we are in is not permanent – it’s made from mud and it is breaking and dangerous,” she told me. The good news is that things are already starting to look up for Rosta, thanks to the amazing generosity of people like you. Thanks to your kind donations, Traidcraft 22 traidcraftshop.co.uk
Exchange was able to reach Rosta and other isolated farmers in the mountainous southwest of Tanzania. The farmers have now formed a group and are meeting regularly in a spirit of solidarity and mutual support. They are sharing their knowledge on farming and business skills, and have made a firm commitment to empowering women and disabled people. This support and solidarity will help these farmers navigate through the uncertain times ahead – as we all face our individual challenges in the wake of Covid-19. Nobody knows what the future holds, but we do know that strength comes in numbers. We take heart that you’ve been able to provide that for people like Rosta. This is a fantastic first step, meaning that now, even more amazing work can be done. This Easter, a gift from you could give even a small farm like Rosta’s the power to provide. An acre or half-acre of land might seem too small to earn a good living from. But simple solutions,
costing very little, can change everything for farmers like Rosta. You can help them transform their land and provide a better future for their families by learning new, sustainable farming methods. You can help vulnerable farmers learn soil conservation, organic agriculture, and crop diversification techniques. Healthy, nutrient-rich soil means productive land with greater resistance to extreme weather conditions, like drought and floods caused by the climate crisis. Your support can help farmers reduce pollution, use less energy and water and restore the delicate balance of local ecosystems – while making enough money to support their families. Rosta’s face lights up when she tells me how she would spend any extra income she could earn. “I wish if I had enough money, I could take my grandchildren to school,” she says. “I want to change my house. That’s the only thing I need and want.”
it has so much potential to provide a better future for her family. If you are able, I hope you will give a gift this Easter, to keep small farms like Rosta’s flourishing for years to come. With your support, just half an acre can make a whole world of difference. DONATE NOW

What links a copper smelting factory in Zambia, an iron ore mine in Brazil, a garment factory in Bangladesh, and palm oil plantations in Liberia? It's not a very happy answer. They're all places where British companies have violated people's basic safety in recent years. Companies have been hunting profit and ignoring people's rights, lives, and futures. It's not a one-off problem. Traidcraft Exchange’s new 5-minute film tells the alltoo-common stories of people at the sharp end of trade injustice.
Tickets are just £1 each, and all money raised will go directly towards Traidcraft Exchange’s life-changing work to transform lives through trade.

Simple Store Cupboard RECIPES
At the moment, we’re finding the need to reach into our store cupboards more than ever, which is exactly why it’s time to banish boring beans on toast and enjoy some of those wonderful, tinned essentials.
This month, we’re mad about sardines. For a small fish, they have huge versatility and mighty nutritional value – filled with omega-3 fatty acids, B12 and vitamin D. Here are our top five ways to add pizazz to your next sardine dish!
Roasted Sardines
1
Heat your oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. Lightly grease a large roasting tray or line with tin foil. Separately, in a bowl, toss a diced red onion and 100g halved cherry tomatoes with lemon juice and zest of half a lemon, cumin, chilli, olive oil, parsley and one crushed garlic clove. Season with salt and pepper. Place tinned sardines on the roasting tray and scatter the onion and tomato mix over them. Roast for 10-15 minutes, or until cooked through.
Sardine Maftoul
2
Cook 100g of maftoul (large, Palestinian grain, similar to cous cous). Fluff up with a fork, drain any residual water, then stir in a large pinch each of ground cumin, cinnamon and coriander. Add a 400g drained tin of chickpeas with one finely chopped red onion, chopped fresh coriander and chopped cucumber. Season with ground black pepper, then stir in 120g tinned sardines. Sardine Pasta
3
Add a small amount of olive oil to a frying pan on a low heat. Add two crushed garlic cloves and a teaspoon of capers, stir, then add one tin of chopped tomatoes, some chilli flakes or freshly chopped chilli, 10g of fresh torn basil and just a pinch of sugar. Allow this to cook for five minutes, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Meanwhile, cook 200g fusilli or penne pasta. To finish, add a handful of chopped olives and 100g broad beans and cook for another three minutes. Finally, add a 120g tin of sardines and another 10g freshly chopped basil and stir into your pasta.
Sardine Fishcakes
4
Mix 120g drained tinned sardines with 400g mashed potatoes. Stir in some sweetcorn and finely chopped spring onions, then shape the mixture into fishcakes. These measurements should make up to eight medium-sized fishcakes. Lightly coat all fishcakes in polenta, then arrange them on a baking tray and drizzle with a little oil. Bake at 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6 for 20 minutes. Serve with steamed vegetables and rice for a wholesome, healthy tea.
