Photo of the Month A special thanks to Alistair, Sandy, Evie and James for sending in this adorable picture of them on a winter walk in matching hats. You look brilliant! 2

traidcraftshop.co.uk

We love hearing what you think of the content we send out – but we especially love when we receive pictures as feedback. And this one has to be one of our favourites! We are told that Granny Irene bought all of the ingredients for our vegan chocolate mousse for Ishbel for Christmas, and gave her one of our catalogues with the recipe in to accompany them. We’re delighted to see that both Ishbel and her daughter, May, enjoyed the finished product! Thanks so much for sharing your photos.

I trust that you are all safe and well and managing to endure this third period of lockdown. As I write, we hear that by the end of this month, millions will have been vaccinated and children will be preparing to return to school. With a good wind this will lead to more lifting of restrictions and in turn the ability to trade again. So with that in mind, this month we launch our new spring catalogue with a series of roadshows. So far nearly 250 have signed up to one of the four events. We are really looking forward to catching up with so many of you. Stay safe and as ever, Happy fair trading... Matt

TEAM TRAIDCRAFT RECOMMENDS…

LOCKDOW N 3.0 E DIT ION ! It’s cold outside, it gets dark early and we’re restricted as to where we can go and what we can do… but we’re staying positive here at Traidcraft HQ. We thought we would share some of our book, TV and audiobook recommendations, keeping us entertained while we’re spending more time indoors.

“I have recently been watching Good Girls on Netflix. It’s a US comedy/ crime drama about three suburban mothers who orchestrate a local grocery store heist to escape financial ruin and establish independence together. They get into a hole and find it harder and harder to climb back out of it. I really enjoyed that and Umbrella Academy on Netflix, which was strange but worth the watch.”

“Over the past few weeks I’ve been gripped to eight-part series, The Serpent, on BBC. It is based on the crimes of Charles Sobhraj, a French thief, fraudster and serial killer. It follows Sobhraj, who preyed on Western tourists, throughout the Hippie Trail of Southeast Asia during the 1970s. I am mesmerised by the characters, the fashion and the beautiful backdrop of Thailand. I haven’t got to the end of the series yet so no spoilers please!!”

“I recently listened to the audiobook The Sandman, by Neil Gaimans, which was excellent. It had a load of famous voices playing the parts, like James McAvoy, Andy Serkis and Taron Egerton. It's basically about The Sandman (James McAvoy) who is the ‘lord of dreams’ - it's a collection of short stories about him. There were lots of cool sounds effects too; it was probably the best produced audiobook I've ever heard.”

“I’ve just finished watching Lupin on Netflix. It retells the classic French story about Arsène Lupin, the worldfamous gentleman thief and master of disguise. It's such a good show. I loved the storyline - it has you on the edge of your seat, with so many twists and turns. The series is like a puzzle you don't want to put down. You follow Lupin fighting injustice and you are rooting for him all the way through.”

“I’ve been watching The Pembrokeshire Murders on ITV; it’s a three-part series based on the real murders carried out by Welsh serial killer, John Cooper, in the 1980s. It’s quite dark, but if you’re into that sort of thing, it’s a great watch! Apart from that, Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens is the best book I've read in a while; it’s a compelling and unusual story, set in an interesting location, with engaging characters. Well worth a read!” Jo

S EA CELL (TM) So, what's all the fuss about? You may have spotted a T-shirt made from SeaCell(TM) in our spring 2021 preview and wondered what on earth that meant. Well, that’s where we come in - we’re here to tell you all about this new, sustainable material, and why it’s so good for people and planet. Brace yourselves...

WHAT IS SEACELL™? What if we told you that the components which make up your favourite items of clothing didn’t have to involve farming or animals? What if they came from an abundant, sustainable resource, like seaweed? Yep, you read that right… seaweed. Welcome the innovative and progressive new fabric, SeaCell™. SeaCell™ is made from a brown algae called ascophyllum nodossum, also known as Knotted Wrack, which grows in the Icelandic Fjords.

HOW IS SEACELL™ MADE?

AVAILABLE FROM FE BRUARY

Through a solventspinning process, cellulose is dissolved and mixed with washed and filtered seaweed, to create a sturdy yarn. This process locks in the beneficial properties of seaweed.

WHY IS SEACELL(TM) SO GOOD? • I t contains antioxidants that react with free radicals in the skin to neutralise them, thus slowing down ageing and reducing skin damage by the environment. • N utrients from the seaweed are retained in the fibre, including iron, calcium, magnesium and Vitamin E. The structure of the fabric promotes the transfer of these nutrients when the skin comes in contact with the fabric. • T he fabric absorbs bodily moisture faster than cotton. • I t’s wearable, breathable, absorbent, lightweight and soft. • T he end product is 100% biodegradable. • S eaweed for use in SeaCell™ is collected by Smartfiber AG (using a special machine with blades that do not cause any permanent damage). They harvest a batch of seaweed once every four years and cut it only above the regenerative part of the plant. This ensures that the seaweed isn't permanently damaged. Cutting the upper portion of the plant in this manner encourages the plant to sprout more. • S eaweed in SeaCell™ is dried naturally and not subject to any chemical treatment, ensuring that the natural components of the plant are retained. • Since seaweed is renewable and the production method is extremely energy-efficient, this is one of the most eco-friendly fabrics around! Keep an eye out on our website and in your inboxes for your exclusive Fairtrade Fortnight discounts!

Fairtrade Fortnight is usually a time where thousands of individuals, companies and groups across the UK come together to share the stories of the people who grow our food and drinks and who grow the cotton in our clothes, people who are often exploited and underpaid. Due to the pandemic, Fairtrade Fortnight 2021 will feel different; physically campaigning and meeting face to face may be off the cards – but the show must go on! You can continue to support Fairtrade virtually and within your smaller communities.

who have contributed least to the causes of climate change. Droughts, crop disease, floods, heatwaves and shrinking harvests are among the challenges they face. When the Fairtrade Foundation spoke to some of these farmers, they were told that they felt climate change was one of the biggest obstacles their generation is facing. They also commented that only with more money would they feel equipped to meet their everyday needs and deal with the devastating challenges climate change brings. This year, the focus of Fairtrade Fortnight is climate change, and the growing problems this poses to farmers and workers within the Fairtrade community. The two-week period will highlight the facts; climate change is a huge challenge for farmers and workers in countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia and Honduras, yet these are the countries

Choosing to buy fair trade, ethical food and drink is everyday activism, and is the simplest way to change the world. Through fair trade, farmers and growers can earn enough to feed their families, send their children to school, provide a future for their local community and look into solutions to the problems they face due to climate change.

CLIMATE CHANGE:

OUR OBLIGATION TO LEAD THE WAY THOUGHTS FROM ROBIN ROTH

A

lthough it seems like a long time ago, the old year really ended with a bang for us. We had an exceptionally busy time in the warehouse and customer service departments, and we are extremely grateful for all the orders you kept sending through to us. Christmas was a time just to stop and enjoy being with the family. Lockdown limited us all but having my children around, playing some old-fashioned board games and eating well was a welcome relief. Whether my piano playing gave them any comfort is a moot point, but they were graceful and kind, and I could not wish for more. 16 traidcraftshop.co.uk

IF EVER THERE WAS A MOMENT TO KEEP PRESSURE ON THE GOVERNMENT TO DO THE RIGHT THING, THIS IS IT. THE EYES OF THE WORLD ARE ON US. And talking of children, 2021 presents us with challenges unknown for at least a generation. Some charities are talking about COVID-19 having wiped out 40 years of development progress in many emerging countries. That is quite a statement but from what we know it is not an exaggeration. We have, after all, seen first-hand that millions of people here in the UK, one of the world’s richest countries, have been thrown into additional insecurity and we have witnessed the unseemly spectacle of the government promising, then retracting, then recommitting itself to providing free school meals to hungry kids. Imagine how this will be playing out in many much poorer countries across the world.

November, the COP is for all the nations to declare what their own national plans are for reducing their carbon output and for committing to seeing this through. A case of who’s putting their money where their mouths are in full public view.

In November of this year, the UK Government hosts COP26 in Glasgow. COP stands for “Conference of the Parties” and is the place where, traditionally, the world’s nations meet to thrash out their response to the challenges presented by climate change. Some of you may remember hearing about COP21 in Paris back in 2015, where the world’s governments committed to trying to keep global temperatures from rising by no more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

If ever there was a moment to keep pressure on the Government to do the right thing, this is it. The eyes of the world are on us. Building back better is exactly what fair trade companies like Traidcraft have been promoting for years. When I think of my children, I know that what we decide now will be what they get to inherit in the future.

COP26 should have happened last year but COVID had other plans. Rearranged for

Hosting the COP puts an additional responsibility on the UK to lead the way and the Government has made some big promises about transforming our carbon economy and building back better. Making these promises come true depends on some equally big changes: particularly in the way we produce, transport, and consume food, which is responsible for around 25 to 35% of all green-house gas emissions.

The UK is the 6th wealthiest nation in the world, and its 1% of the world’s population is responsible for the 5th largest historical contribution to CO2 in the atmosphere. We have an obligation to lead the way. traidcraftshop.co.uk

Say yes to green trade (and no to fossil fuels) Trade has to be fairer and greener. It's that simple. Will you join the campaign for the UK to join the green trade agreement?

Climate change hits the poorest people in the world hardest. And the effects of climaterelated disasters are depriving millions of farmers of secure livelihoods. The UK has do everything it can to stop the climate crisis. But the UK currently spends about £10 billion a year subsidising coal, oil, and gas – the very fuels that threaten our planet. This means taxpayers’ money goes towards making it cheaper to destroy the planet. That has got to stop. The UK has a chance to do the right thing. Now that the UK has left the EU, it can make its own trade deals. And there’s a new trade deal that does all the things we want trade to do.

1st

PRIZE

The UK should join a new green trade agreement created by New Zealand, Norway, Costa Rica, and 3 other countries. This green trade agreement is called ACCTS. Here's what ACCTS does: • stops fossil fuels subsidies • s upports environmentally-friendly trade and businesses • r e-balances trade in favour of greener industries and away from fossil fuels. Trade that supports people and the planet – that's exactly what we're all working for. Take action: Go to traidcraftexchange.org/accts and join the campaign.

Will Power Only when we get trade right can we end global poverty. Right now, millions of people are without the very basics they need to earn enough to survive. No matter how hard they work, they won’t be able to put food on the table, or pay for medical help for their children. This needs to change. A fair income gives you freedom, security and hope for the future. It allows you to feed your family and educate your children. That’s why Traidcraft Exchange’s work is so important – because a decent income changes everything. It gives people the freedom to buy enough to eat, to save for emergencies, and build a decent home, to supporting their children’s education or pay for life saving medicines. We are working to build a world where everyone, no matter where they were born, can earn a decent wage and live free from exploitation. But in a changing world and a challenging fundraising climate, Traidcraft Exchange depends even more on the generosity of people like you to

A climate friendly, changemaking clear out! With the country still in lockdown, it might be time for a post-Christmas clear out... Recycling is always great for the planet, but now you can make it great for Traidcraft Exchange too! Help change the future for families in the world's poorest communities through sending our partners your used, old, broken or unwanted items. They will recycle them free of charge, and send the income directly to Traidcraft Exchange. If you’ve got any old jewellery or out of use bank notes, or even a rusty old car cluttering up the house or garage, now is the time to recycle them for a good cause! We can also recycle printer cartridges. traidcraftexchange.org/recycling

fund our work. One way to give is through a gift in your will. After looking after those closest to them, many people choose to leave a small percentage of the total value of their estate to charity. A gift to Traidcraft Exchange of just 1% of the average house value in the UK would enable us to support thousands of families across the world. Perhaps making a will – and leaving a legacy gift to the Traidcraft Exchange family – is still on your to-do list. Maybe it is a New Year’s resolution you haven’t yet acted on? 2020 reminded us that none of us know what’s round the corner. So will-writing is for everyone, a vital part of prudent financial planning to safeguard ourselves, our loved ones, our assets, our values and the causes most dear to us when we die. Please consider remembering Traidcraft Exchange in your will, to ensure that for many more people in poor countries, after you’ve gone, life does indeed go on. Thank you.
