Many global fashion brands failing to honour contracts for clothing which has already been made for them. “It’s the poorly paid young women who make their clothes who will lose their jobs if the manufacturers go bust.” Fiona Gooch explains to The Independent why she’s appalled. CELEBRATING

YEARS OF THE VEGAN TRADEMARK

This year marks 30 years of the well-known Vegan Mark, which is why in this issue, we’re celebrating all things vegan!

A Brief History of The Vegan Society… Founded here in the UK, in November 1944, The Vegan Society is a registered charity and the oldest vegan society in the world. The Society was founded by Donald Watson and his wife, Dorothy, along with four friends, who created and coined the word ‘vegan’ (the first and last letters of ‘vegetarian’), as a statement against vegetarians who ate dairy products.

4

traidcraftshop.co.uk

How and Why Did the Vegan Mark Come About?… The sunflower you see in the Vegan Mark was taken from the original, hand-drawn Vegan Society charity logo – it’s simple, eye-catching and easily recognisable. There is still no legal definition of ‘vegan’ when it comes to product labelling. Products are therefore open to being mislabelled – either by companies misunderstanding the definition or wanting to gain access to a vegan audience without doing the groundwork. Prompted by this lack of clarity, in 1990, the

Vegan Mark was introduced to help consumers easily spot vegan products. This was the world’s first vegan product labelling scheme of its kind. Every single product labelled with the Vegan Mark has been checked by a team of experts to ensure that absolutely no animal ingredients have been used and that is has not been tested on animals either. The Vegan Mark represents the internal standard for authentic vegan products, and is registered in many countries around the world and is used worldwide on over 42,000 products.

The Vegan Society’s Impact Today With thousands upon thousands of products globally carrying the Vegan Mark, The Vegan Society have helped catapult veganism into the mainstream. Talk of vegan ethics and cultureshifting vegan products have discussed openly in the media and by celebrities (does anyone remember Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscars speech!?), as well as online searches for vegan products rocketing year on year. The Vegan Society’s official partner, Veganuary, signed up a record 400,000 people this year, compared to 250,000 in 2019 – showing that more people than ever are adopting the diet and lifestyle, and require the products to suit their choices.

On the Move and Feeling Good! As of last month, the Government have eased restrictions and told us that we now permitted to unlimited outdoor exercise. So, if you’re in need of a little inspiration, we thought we’d give you a few of our top tips and let you into what some of us are getting up to during lockdown, to keep ourselves in shape!

WALK THIS WAY! Walking is an underestimated exercise in our books! A simple stroll in the fresh air can burn about 100 calories per mile – so pop on some comfy shoes and explore your local area. “I’ve been walking a lot during this second phase of lockdown. Instead of commuting, I get up the same time to have breakfast and a walk round the park before I start my day. A slow walk is great to stretch your legs and get your body moving for the day for the day ahead, keeping you focused and alert throughout the day. Level up to a faster pace to get the heart going and release those endorphins with a fast-paced walk. Even if you're heading to the shop for essentials, picking up the pace will not only tone your body, but will feel like you've done a workout in a short space of time. If you're feeling like you want a challenge, dust off your running shoes and head out for a run around your local park if you can, running has so many health benefits from adding years to your life, to keeping your heart and joints healthy as you age. These simple exercises can be done at next to no expense, whilst appreciating the great outdoors safely.” Rio 6

traidcraftshop.co.uk

KEEP ON RUNNIN' “I've been running for a while but find it to be more important now than ever. It improves my mood, clears my head and gets me out of the house for some muchneeded fresh air. My fiancé has also laced up her trainers and joined me, now I'm struggling to keep up!” Liam

PLANT & SQUAT The benefits of gardening are multifold. Not only are you getting loads of fresh air and calming your mind, but it’s a superb work out too. Hoeing is great for the abs and weeding is basically a squat session without even realising it.

DANCE LIKE NOBODY'S WATCHING For many people, working out can feel very forced and not much fun (yep, guilty!). That’s where you have to get creative. Popping on some of your favourite, up-beat songs and having a dance in your own living room will get the heart rate up and burn off a few calories at the same time. Why not get the rest of the family involved too? You could even try to learn the dance moves to your favourite music video!

...AND RELAX! “Yoga is a great one for days when the weather’s not so good. I’m quite fortunate that my boyfriend’s mum is a yoga teacher, so we’ve been tuning in to her sessions remotely every weekend. I’m finding it really helpful for stretching, toning and improving core strength. Whether you’re completely new to yoga (like me!), or your regular class has been cancelled, there are some fantastic - and completely free - classes to tune into on YouTube. Yoga With Adriene comes highly recommended and offers different classes for different levels of experience and varying age ranges.” Sarah

CAUSE A RACKET! Many golf courses and tennis courts have now reopened – so why not enjoy a socially distanced (yet still seriously competitive!) game with a friend?

Remember that fitness DVD you got for Christmas a few years ago? It’s time to dig it out and turn your front room into a fitness studio.

RUN 'APPY There are lots of apps worth looking into which offer different types of support and training plans for different users. A few of us here at Traidcraft HQ have tried the Couch to 5K app which helps novices go from never having ran before, to slowly build up and eventually be able to run a whole five kilometres.

CLEAN CALORIES! During lockdown, many of us have become self-professed cleaning freaks in our homes. But did you know you can burn up to 190 calories on a tough job like scrubbing away dirt? The chores we all hate like vacuuming and making over your bed are excellent upper body work outs.

POSITIVITY PLAYLIST

THE EXERCISE EDITION We’ve loved hearing all of your feedback about how much you’re enjoying our Positivity Platform! After the success of last month’s Positivity Playlist, our resident DJ, Rio, has compiled another list of mood-boosting songs in what we have called our ‘Exercise Edition’. This playlist comes jam-packed with upbeat songs to motivate you as you walk, jog, run or work out.

The Time of Quiet

No-one’s told the daffodils about the pause to spring And no-one’s told the birds to roost and asked them not to sing. No-one’s asked the lazy bee to cease his bumbling round And no-one’s stopped the bright green shoots emerging through the ground. No-one’s told the sap to rest deep within the wood And stop the sleepy trees from waking, wreathed about in bud. No-one’s told the sky to douse its brightest shades of blue

A note from Sarah...

It seems that we are all appreciating the value of nature and being outdoors more than ever at the moment, which is why we felt we had to bring this to your attention. Rosemary Philip has sent us this wonderful poem, which she feels expresses so much of what we are all currently going through. Thanks so much for sharing it with us, Rosemary.

And stop the scudding clouds from puffing headlong into view. No-one’s asked the lambs to calm the springs beneath their feet, To stop their rapid rush and quiet each joyful bleat. No-one’s told the stream to halt its gurgle or its flow And warned the playful breezes not to gust and blow. No-one’s asked the raindrops not to fall upon the earth And fail to quench the soil in the season of rebirth. Remember what you value, remember who is dear, Close the doors to danger and keep your family near. In the quiet all around us take the time to sit and stare And wonder at the glory unfurling everywhere. Look towards the future, after the ordeal, And keep faith in Mother Nature’s power and will to heal.

Ellie's Kitchen Guest Review

I

Ellie lives life with the motto that "everything is better with good food". Give Ellie's Kitchen a follow for baking inspiration, food hacks, reviews and more!

For me, one of the joys I experience daily Is GREAT food and drink. It has also remained important to me during these times that I don’t just buy the first things I see on shelf in the supermarket, and that I support local and/or ethical food and drink choices where possible.

@EllieskitchenUK on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

n these funny times, I think we have all found a lot of joy in little things that we perhaps never blinked twice about before the world went into lockdown…

Traidcraft as a website is relatively new for me but since I received my first ‘essentials’ delivery I must admit I can’t wait to place my next order and try some more new things! My first delivery included a number of items that get used daily in our household; the store cupboard essentials we never run out of! Here’s what I tried… and what I thought. 10 traidcraftshop.co.uk

You can also visit her website www.ellieskitchenuk.com

Traidcraft Earl Grey Tea – to me it’s important

to have a selection of teas in the cupboard ready for when you fancy a cuppa with a slice of cake or for when you have visitors. Earl Grey is my usual choice, but it has to be good! These bags create a full-bodied brew which is also delicate and refreshing. Just how it should be! I can see why these bags have received a Great Taste Award!

Cafédirect Smooth Roast Instant Coffee We always have instant coffee in the house. Not really for our morning cup but for a whole host of other things; baking, iced coffee, drop in visitors. So it’s important that our instant coffee tastes as good as a pot of freshly brewed ground coffee. This tastes great, it’s quite mild in flavour so I tend to use more than I usually would, but for convenience, it’s 10/10 from us!

Mexican Blossom Set Honey Once you’ve tried good honey, I promise that you won’t go back to the squeezy stuff! I use honey in my tea, on my oats, in many of my bakes and this is now a favourite of mine! It’s ever so slightly spicy and strong in flavour, perfect for all uses.

Fruity Golden Granola Usually we make our own granola BUT we always have a backup box in in case we run out of homemade or simply don’t have time to make more. I thought I would try this mix which is packed with dried fruit, seeds and almonds and I wasn’t disappointed! It was very tasty and 100% something I would keep in the house. TIP: try sprinkling this on top of muffins before you bake them for a crunchy twist!

Double Chocolate Chunk Cookies Just like with the granola, we always have a backup box of cookies in for when we don’t have a homemade bake to tuck into. I admittedly didn’t get to try these, my boyfriend demolished them before I got a chance… but I think that speaks for itself. His verdict? “good chocolate chunk ratio!”. It’s also worth a mention that they are vegan too, so can be enjoyed by almost everyone!

Transparent Honduras and Sumatra Organic Ground Coffee I’m pretty set in my way with coffee (aren’t we all?), but I was interested to try this. Yes, it’s a bit more expensive than our usual ground coffee, but the rule breaking transparency on the front of the pack caught my attention. It’s pretty brave for a company to show exactly how much profit they make on something but knowing that everyone involved with making it benefits mutually would make paying a little more totally worth it! It’s stronger in its roast and really smooth. It also compliments the oat milk I use in my coffee and I love that it’s roasted here in the UK! All of these items I would order again, not just because they are 10/10 for flavour but also because they come with a Fairtrade Mark which somehow makes them taste even better! I also love that many of these things can be bulk purchased in cases meaning that you have to place orders less frequently and can really pack your cupboards FULL of the essentials! My next tries? Our cupboard is never without chocolate, so I think I will start there! NB: I was sent these items for review, but all thoughts are my own traidcraftshop.co.uk

Our Much Lusted Over Marmalade is Back Traidcraft Organic Orange Marmalade Rich, flavourful and finely cut from organic Seville oranges. 67388 (340g) £2.65 | 43294 (6 x 340g) £14.10

Your Summer 2020 Catalogue should be with you now - we hope you love it! We'd just like to give you a quick heads up that our Traidcraft Essentials Box is actually £30 - not £35 as the catalogue would suggest.

Muesli Update In true transparent fashion, we are letting you all know about some of the changes we are making to our muesli and letting you in on why we are making the changes we are. This year, where possible, we have been updating our ownbrand products where we have run out of packaging; this update includes ensuring the product is as fair trade as it can be, uses the most eco-friendly packaging and is commercial viable. We have recently relaunched the Traidcraft Fruit and Nut Muesli; this is now in a smaller box with Traidcraft branding, rather than GEOMuesli branding. We were no longer able to continue with the bigger box size, as this size is no longer made by our manufacturer. We also looked into the viability of this product, and found that at the previous weight and RRP, this would not be possible. After researching other muesli on the market, we felt a 500g at £4.00 RRP was suitable and enabled our product to continue. We are currently revamping the GEOMuesli Exotic Fruit too, including improving the fair trade ingredients. This is taking longer than the update of the Fruit and Nut Muesli. 20 traidcraftshop.co.uk

Fancy a Cuppa? We will soon have limited edition version of the 1000s teabags in stock. There will be slightly less tea in each teabag, making a cheaper RRP. The reason for this is that there was a mix up at our manufacturers, but instead of wasting 400,000 tea bags, we decided to offer them to you anyway, with a different label on. These teabags will still make a wonderful cuppa, they might just need a little longer to brew.

In April’s Bulletin, we listed products with maximum quantities for purchasing; this was so that more customers would be able to invest in the provisions they needed, and to discourage stock piling. Here, we are listing products with minimum quantities. To be completely transparent with you, low RRP items cost us more to pick, pack and ship single items, which is why we made this decision. EAT FOOD. NOT TOO MUCH. MOSTLY PLANTS. BY ROBIN ROTH

M

y son was 11 when he informed us that he had seen something on the internet about animal factory farming. He informed us that he intended to become a vegetarian. So, we smiled, breathed in, and decided to wait it out. It’s a dangerous game trying to “out-wait” a child. You assume that you have all the cards in your hand and it’s just a question of playing them at the right moment. But children can be wise and know so much more than their parents. Nine years on, the whole family has become vegetarian and we have occasionally flirted with, though never fully consummated an affair with, veganism. The original inspiration for my son was the sudden realisation that factory farmed food was produced in the most unimaginably horrible way. As Bismark, Chancellor of Germany in the 1880s once commented, “the man who wishes to keep 26 traidcraftshop.co.uk

his respect for sausages and laws should not see how either is made.” Over the years my interest in animal farming became more nuanced. It was not just about how the animals were housed and ultimately slaughtered. I began to understand that eating meat is fantastically inefficient in terms of feeding a growing population. It is one of those generally known “facts” that to produce one calorific unit of meat requires 10 calorific units of grain. While some animal meat (chicken) is less grain intensive than others (beef), the overall sum is about right. Just because this is “normal” doesn’t mean that it makes any sense whatsoever. I know of relatively few business models that deliberately choose to invest 10 units of a commodity, throw in some additional cost and time in order to produce…. one unit of the same commodity. It works because of an economic system that is heavily subsidised by the state and has enormous hidden costs which we all pay for – or will pay for at some point in the future.

I was recently informed that a small but still significant percentage of our water bill covers the cost of cleaning up farming effluent. The hidden cost of excessive anti-biotic usage may, of course, yet come to haunt us in ways we don’t want to contemplate given our current experience with the pandemic – and the subsidies paid to produce mono-crops and actively remove bio-diversity at every opportunity are eye-watering. And this is to say nothing of the removal of vast areas of tropical forest every year, in order to feed animals in Europe. Cheap meat and dairy are, in fact, very, very expensive. Veganism is a logical response to a completely rotten system. And of course, vegans are vilified by very powerful industry lobbies who have a lot to fear. Rotten systems tend to react – often viciously – when they feel threatened. Now, anyone who is interested in trade justice can begin to smell a good cause here. Veganism, and vegetarianism, are in fact distinctly political choices. It sounds a bit like fair trade, in fact, and we are up against exactly the same few multi-national trading companies.

It

is one of those generally known “ facts ” that to produce one calorific unit of meat requires 1 0 calorific units of grain.

Veganism may seem beyond most of us - even if we could imagine a life without meat, eggs, milk and butter, what do vegans actually eat? How on earth can you live with such a limited selection? One of my favourite authors Michael Pollen – who understands more about food injustice than most Fairtrade leaders, wrote a

V eganism is a logical

response to a completely rotten system. A nd of course, vegans are vilified by very powerful industry lobbies who have a lot to fear brilliant book on this subject called “Eat Food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” He stresses that grass grazed animals kept in healthy, generally organic, conditions play an extremely important role in sustainable agriculture – but examples are few and far between. He recommends that if you can support these farmers, do so. 100%. And just a clue here – you generally won’t find these products in supermarkets. I have to side with Pollen on this occasion, a little dairy – organic and local – is still part of my diet, but if we want to make lasting changes to how food and animals are reared, eating less processed, factory farmed food is good for us, for the planet – and it definitely isn’t what the multinationals desire. What better reason can there be than that for giving it – at least occasionally - a go? traidcraftshop.co.uk

Coronavirus Update from Traidcraft Exchange The Traidcraft Exchange team in Bangladesh distributing emergency rations - Photo credit Traidcraft Exchange

Dear Friends, Thanks to you, our teams are continuing to respond to the Coronavirus crisis across the world. We’re working incredibly hard to provide emergency support and relief to the people we work with who are facing untold hardship in the midst of this crisis. You can keep up-to-date with our work on our website – www.traidcraftexchange.org/coronavirus. We’ve been able to provide food packages for workers unable to feed their families, personal protective equipment, soap and a helpline for others. With your help we will continue to adapt our work so that we can be there for the most vulnerable, offering our expertise and support as the situation develops.

Here in the UK, our offices are closed but the teams continue to work from home. We’ve all been overwhelmed by the response to our Easter Appeal which has raised over £50,000 so far – thank you so much to everyone who’s donated – there’s still time to help if you can and haven’t already at www.traidcraftexchange.org/donate. Now more than ever, farmers’ ability to be resilient and selfsufficient is vital – and it’s your generosity which makes this happen. We hope you and your families are keeping well and safe, and we thank you for all your ongoing kind support. Amy Wilson Head of Fundraising, Traidcraft Exchange
