EARL GREY FLAVOURED ICE CREAM RECIPE

Great Idea Many thanks to Fairtrader, Deb Lee, who shared her fantastic idea with us here at Traidcraft. We thought we’d pass the message on to you, in the hope her simple but genius idea could be replicated within your communities. Thanks Deb! “As we returned to actual church on Easter day, I had some Traidcraft Divine chocolate that was about to expire, so I packed them in bags with an Easter card. We gave them out (Covid securely!) as people arrived for the Easter service, with a sticker suggesting that to say thank you (for the chocolate and jab) they left a donation for Christian Aid in the bucket on their way out. It raised over £300! It was a real win/win/win as not only will Christian Aid get some money, but it benefitted the fair trade chocolate producers, got rid of nearly out of date chocolate without me having to eat it and everyone appreciated a little gift as they returned to church this Easter!”

You Did It!

A huge shout out to Traidcraft’s Liam, Matt and Jo who completed Traidcraft Exchange’s 100-kilometre challenge last month. This is Traidcraft Exchange’s first ever virtual challenge!

Friends, Spring has definitely sprung! As lockdown restrictions continue to lift, it is great to see so many of you back in action. From 100km walks, to planting trees and seeing stalls and shops open up, it is clear the shoots of recovery are growing strong. Enjoy this spring-filled Bulletin and as ever… Happy fair trading. Matt

Their Camino de Santiago trekking team planned to embark upon a 100km walk along the storied Camino Frances route to Santiago de Compostela. For obvious reasons, that was not meant to be, and the Camino has been postponed to October. Instead, they invited as many supporters as possible to walk or run 100km at their own pace throughout April. By taking on this challenge, Liam, Matt and Jo made TWICE the difference - as part of Traidcraft Exchange’s ground-breaking Regenerators Appeal, the UK government doubled all funds raised! Discover more DISCOVER MORE about the Regenerators Appeal here:

We are on the lookout for new, non-executive directors and a Chair for Traidcraft plc. The deadline is May 25th, so if you are interested to know more, please see below for details. CHAIR OF TRAIDCRAFT PLC BOARD NON-EXECUTIVE TRAIDCRAFT DIRECTORS

trees which will provide a sustainable livelihood for the future. If you missed the chance to contribute to the tree planting target, you can still have your donation doubled by the government until June 7th, as part of Traidcraft Exchange’s Regenerators Appeal… PLANT AN ACRE

They did it! As part of their Regenerators Appeal, last month Traidcraft Exchange raised enough money to fund 400 acres of tree planting. The trees will support poor communities in costal Tanzania whose livelihoods have been devastated by climate change to regenerate their land by planting fruit

“This is an initiative which gives us, as a business, the opportunity to add to our commitment to fight back against climate change while supporting producers. It’s also a great way to support our sister charity and get staff involved in something so positive coming out of lockdown.” Traidcraft Plc’s Jude Allen

Date for the Diaries SATURDAY, 8TH MAY IS

WORLD FAIR TRADE DAY! The fair trade movement has a solution; to rising inequality, to entrenched poverty, to gender discrimination, to environmental destruction. Recovering from the pandemic gives the world a chance not just to build back better, but build back fairer. The WFTO believe that we cannot simply go back to the old normal. The old normal left millions behind and was destroying our planet. We have the opportunity to reboot our economies so it is equitable and sustainable. We can replace outdated business models that channel ever-greater wealth to the richest, giving the top 1% more wealth than the poorest 50%. Through Fair

Trade, organic and social enterprises; cooperatives and other social and solidarity actors, we can channel profits to the many, not the few. Putting people and planet first in trade and business, we can ensure the economy serves those who are otherwise left behind. Our planet is in crisis and humanity faces extinction. Bold action is needed to address the climate crisis, while securing the livelihoods of our planet’s poorest communities. But all is not lost. We can build back fairer. It’s time to rethink our economy. We can build back to so no one is left behind. The time is now!

IT’S ALWAYS TIME FOR A TEA! We make no secret of the fact we’re super proud of our tea range! Of course, we’re a little bit biased, but we’re here today to give you SIX reasons why our tea is the best of the best!

1

The history of fair trade tea in the UK dates back to 1979, when WE imported the very first fair trade cuppa into the country. Being the first to import and sell fair trade tea, we proved that people were keen to pay a premium to make sure the producers had a better deal. Even in the 1980s, tea tasted all that much better for it. We’re so proud of how far our journey with fair trade tea has come.

2

It’s been harvested by carefully selected, traditional farmers in East Africa, who are able to provide for their families and communities thanks to the fair wages they receive for their tea leaves. Many of the smallholders that our suppliers 8

work with have farmer-owned factories, which means that they earn better returns for their work. See here to meet some of them for yourselves! Conversely, a lot of non-fair trade tea is produced on large plantations and estates across India, East Africa, and Sri Lanka, and is picked by employed labourers who endure long hours for notoriously low wages. In countries like Kenya and Sri Lanka, most of the tea is grown on smallholder farms, which are often less than half a football pitch in size. These smallholder farmers find it nearly impossible to compete with the large plantations, who always own and control the tea processing facilities which are essential in handling the

perishable tea leaf, which has to be processed within 24 hours. In return for their handpicked, garden-grown tea, the smallholders receive low and unstable prices from either the large plantations, or the international broker companies. These growers earn a tiny fraction of the price their tea is sold for on the international market, and frequently end up trapped in a cycle of debt and dependence.

Our tea is 100% transparent. By this, we mean that, just like all of our ownbranded goodies, we have published absolutely all of the costs that go into making our tea; from costs of picking, packing, delivering, how much goes back to the farmers and how much profit we make – you can read it all. See more on transparency here.

Ours is the freshest tea around! How can we guarantee the smooth and fresh taste of our tea? Our secret is Leaf Lock True Taste®, a unique process that locks in the freshness of the tea and specially protects it all the way from origin to pack.

There’s not long left to show your support to the Regenerators! Whether you want to make the most of the easing of lock down restrictions and hold a fundraising event, make an online donation, donate your surplus, plant some trees or take up a challenge, time is running out! With donations doubled until the 7th June 2021, thanks to the UK government, there’s not long left to double your impact for those fighting back against climate change. So let's take a look at your money can do when it's doubled by the UK government to help people stand strong in the face of climate change... £25 becomes £50 And could help fund a training session on growing climate resilient crops or fish farming. £50 becomes £100 And could help a Regenerator plant a whole acre of new trees and protect forests for generations to come. £100 becomes £200 And could help fund solar panels for smallholder farmers 12 traidcraftshop.co.uk

The difference in action Monira explains...

This project is changing our lives and making us aware about climate change. We are (now) trying to build our houses stronger and on a higher place. We save 100 taka per month with which we can do a lot in the future. We warn people from our group not to cut down trees. We encourage people to plant more trees. We try to make people from our group aware that we should refrain from using plastic as much as possible. Together when we stand side by side, we are able to deal with many problems.

Even a small amount of support from you can make a huge difference. Donate to The Regenerators Appeal between 8th March and 7th June 2021 and the UK government will double your gift to help the most vulnerable stand strong in the face of climate change. DONATE

A chilly challenge over Easter In the unusual circumstances of lockdown, we ran a Big Brew fundraiser with a difference this year. Raising funds for Traidcraft Exchange’s current Regenerators Appeal, the virtual event was hosted jointly with Traidcraft plc. During the coldest April for many years, participants enjoyed a hot cuppa while listening to Traidcraft Exchange’s Head of Policy, Ally Carnwath discuss the serious subjects of climate change and poverty, and a Traidcraft coffee and chocolate set was given to our Easter quiz prize-winner, Joanna Pollard. But the highlights of the event were the live challenges undertaken by staff. Far from receiving a frosty reception, the suggestion that Amy Wilson, Head of Fundraising at Traidcraft Exchange, should take on the ice-bucket challenge was sportingly accepted. The sight of Amy gamely emptying an ice bucket over her head for such a good cause was heart-warming indeed - for all but Amy! Her cold-water shock was the cause of much hilarity and glee, especially for her young family members!

Another big shout of gratitude goes to our dear colleague at Traidcraft plc, Matt Oliver, who was persuaded several uncomfortable weeks in advance of the event, to keep his itchy beard on, so he could shave it off live during the event. Having already sung an unaccompanied solo of Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘Titwillow’ from ‘The Mikado’, Matt’s water-bowl and Bic-razor shave brought the event to an unusual end, with combined relief and selfconsciousness for Matt, and a great source of therapeutic laugher and entertainment for the rest of us. The event, with only 30 participants, raised a very generous £650 for the Regenerators Appeal, which will be doubled by the UK government. Thanks to all who participated and donated – and special thanks to Amy and Matt, our stars of the show! traidcraftshop.co.uk

100km team

break new ground At the time of writing the Traidcraft Exchange 100km in April team have raised just over £20,000 for the Regenerators Appeal - all by walking or running in their local area – be it the north of Scotland, Gateshead or even the Seychelles!

A regular gift... Join our Small Steps community of regular givers before the 7th May and have your first three donations doubled! Regular giving is one of the most efficient and impactful ways to donate to Traidcraft Exchange. By taking the time to set up your regular gift today, you are investing in the future of families across the Global South who work hard every day to get the most out of trade. You're helping build a future where everyone gets a fair income from the work they do. It’s thanks to our Small Steps community that we can plan ahead – these gifts give us the freedom to commit to communities for the long term, and maximise the impact that we have. If you'd like to join us and have your first three regular gifts doubled please sign up before May 7th.

The 300 strong team has clocked up thousands of kilometres in support of those on the front line of the climate crisis – with the added bonus of their fundraising amount being eligible for the Traidcraft Exchange Camino de Santiago trek in October.
