Protecting the Planet with Home-Brew Organic Fertilisers - Guest article from our friends at Liberation Nuts

As COP26 creeps up on us, we wanted to wave the flag for small producers (again!). But this time with a slightly niche focus… organic fertiliser (how exciting!). Small-holder farmers around the world support over 500 million households with their crops. It is widely agreed that these producers have far more of a connection with the land they work on than their giant competitors. More often than not, the land is their home. They wake up and see the birds, they go to sleep and hear insects, they feel the change in weather patterns and notice altering crop behaviours. They truly care about land preservation. One way they do this is through organic farming. And a great example comes from Del Campo co-operative in Nicaragua - one of our closest partners, where we source our peanuts from - where members are investing a great deal of time and energy into developing their own range of home-brewed, organic fertilisers and pesticides. Made from ingredients you probably have in your own kitchen cupboard, NUTRI PLUS is a hot topic throughout the cooperative, and the crops seem to be loving it too! 10 traidcraftshop.co.uk

Reconnecting with Nature Del Campo is a network of 280 small producers and their families, many of whom are based in Achuapa, a small town in the North West of the country. Whilst not all farms are currently organic, there is an increasing move to return back to natural farming methods in the area. A number of the co-op members are dedicated to producing this line of chemical-free products, encouraging people to stop buying quickfix, agro-chemicals from the large overseas companies and to develop their own skills and knowledge around eco-farming. Brigido Soza Chavarria, President of the coop, explained: “I’m 56 years old and during the first years when I worked with my father and my brothers we did not use chemicals… we are very conscious of the destruction that chemicals cause to the environment and to people’s health.” Over the past few years, the development of this own-range 100% natural, totally organic fertilisers and pesticides has been in the making.

Ignacio teaches his colleagues how to make organic fertiliser

How To: Organic Fertilisers It began with support from a Cuban specialist who spent several months training and advising a few members, who they themselves now speak with authority and passion about organic fertilisers and pesticides. They now know how to make fertilisers for a particular crop or pesticides for a specific insect from ingredients including molasses, sea water, yeast and plant leaves. Ignacio Moreno Pichardo, one of the lead producers, explained the process, starting with finding specific types of fungi that grow under fallen leaves to begin the concoction. Their incremental growth in products has not only seen the co-op farm flourish (and it really is flourishing!) but has also enabled them to start selling the products at a heavily reduced cost to other associates. “We, as a co-operative, earn almost nothing with the sale of the products but what we earn the most is the health of the people and the environment. That is the most important gain, no matter the economy or the money.”

It is clear that this is not a money-making business but an opportunity to share knowledge and understanding and remind people of the techniques earlier generations applied to their land. Sharing the Knowledge So, the next step is to start training other producers. Now experienced enough, Ignacio has started to travel to other towns to teach and support his associates how to brew their very own organic fertilisers and pesticides. His most recent trip took him to a farm on the outskirts of Leon. Three farmers avidly listened to the process as Ignacio mixed molasses with yeast and various other ingredients to create a fertiliser to be applied to the current peanut crop. The farmers repeated the instructions out loud until they knew them by heart. After a few hours Ignacio left the simple kit of bottles, tubes and tape with them and will return in a few weeks to check on their progress and offer another workshop on a pesticide to prevent traidcraftshop.co.uk

11

What next for NUTRI PLUS? More and more farmers are beginning to understand the importance in returning to organic farming, the benefits it has for the land, the crops and the people and animals that eat them.

Have you seen our new look packaging?

Brigido spoke with pride about an increasing consciousness within his community:

Ignacio carefully seals a barrel of NUTRI PLUS organic fertiliser

a specific type of worm that has a penchant for peanuts. However, it was stated very clearly that the home-brew will not kill the worm but just give the plant a bitter taste. As Ignacio emphasised to them: “With agro-chemicals it is always suggested that the more insects it kills the better, but if a product that is ‘agro-ecological’ kills anything, it isn´t eco. What we are looking for is to make a product that gives a bad taste to the leaf. It’s the same as when somebody puts something bitter on a tortilla – you´re not going to eat it – well it´s the same for the bug, it will just go elsewhere...it’s in agreement with nature, it’s not breaking the equilibrium. We all have the right to live and we all have a function.” 12 traidcraftshop.co.uk

“We have some producers who say “Look, in the end I don’t care that the crop costs the same as the other because I know what I am consuming, all the (organic) harvest is good for my family and I have added value because they don´t get sick anymore because they eat healthy and wholesome.” When someone reaches this level of consciousness we are already succeeding.” Whilst NUTRI PLUS is currently a small movement within the farming world, the team have big plans. The organic fertilisers are not exclusively for the 280 Del Campo producers but for anybody with an inkling of interest. And the vision: “to get thousands of producers to produce organically and to be able to sell in the market, not just in Nicaragua. This would be the idea.” Perhaps one day it will even make it to the British gardening market…and everyone should buy it!

As well as producing beautiful, design-led, sustainable stationery, over the last 18 months, our friends at VENT for Change have been working on an exciting collaboration… “Following a chance meeting at Top Drawer 2020 with Cycle of Good, who were also exhibiting a wonderful collection of recycled, reclaimed and sustainable products, it was clear our two organisations shared many ethical and social philosophies.

truly inspiring back stories both organisations understand the importance of sustained and quality education and the changes that can bring to the lives of millions of children, their families and communities for generations to come.” Evan Lewis, VENT for Change Founder

“Donations of education materials such as the pencils and notebooks gifted by VENT for Change mean we can spend our money elsewhere; on teachers, schools and other essentials to help provide children with the education they deserve.” Commented Zoe Kasiya, Cycle of Good UK Manager.

I could see Cycle of Good were clearly doing amazing work in Malawi with their education projects and we had materials and supplies they could utilise in a positive and practical way. Having exchanged email addresses at the show in February 2020, just before the pandemic hit, we donated 10,000 of our recycled pencils to Cycle of Good for their Krizevac Project, building and running schools and educating children across Malawi. In July 2021, once the worst of the pandemic was over and transport and logistics were running more freely, we sent a new consignment, this time many hundreds of notebooks to be used by children in Cycle of Good education projects. Both Cycle of Good and ourselves offer ranges of sustainable, recycled or repurposed products that are perfect for the conscientious consumer. With

New Products – Landed Just in Time for Christmas! Christmas Dates – Great news, Zaytoun have launched a gift box of our favourite medjoul dates – perfectly sized to slip into a stocking! Get yours now.

Just a note to say…

We never buy products to put into a sale – that would go against all that we stand for. We select products in the hope that they will sell throughout the whole season, and sometimes, this means we sell out early. We do top up on stock levels wherever possible, but sometimes the lead time to get to us, amidst other complications, is just unviable. We know this can be disappointing, which is why we always advise to buy sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment. Additionally, with the COVID and Brexit challenges of the year, we just can’t get enough of some products (and a few are arriving late/have arrived late!) to keep them in stock until the end of the season. In these cases, rather than cutting ties and not support the producers, we made the decision to continue to support as widely as possible. Thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support.

“Interest in veganism is at an alltime high and there’s never been a more exciting time to go vegan! While supermarkets have shelves stacked full of vegan goodies, restaurants and takeaways are always adding new vegan dishes to their menus. More and more people are starting to realise that we don’t need to eat or use animals to live happy, healthy lives. It’s perfectly possible to get all the nutrients your body needs from plant sources and taking away animals’ lives from them is cruel when we don’t have to. Some also go vegan because they are concerned with the huge impact that animal agriculture has on the environment, and others choose to follow the lifestyle to improve their health. Veganism is a great choice for all of us who care about these issues. Why not give veganism a go as part of World Vegan Month? You won’t regret it!” - The Vegan Society

Invest in Hope this Christmas When the delta variant of coronavirus arrived in rural Bangladesh, communities like Kamal’s suffered badly. A strict lockdown meant travel between provinces was restricted, resulting in a labour crisis and a delayed harvest. Prices went up as a result, pushing many in the region deeper into poverty. All of this, on top of increasingly salinated soil, rising sea levels and erratic weather equals a dire situation. But this Christmas, there is still hope despite all the darkness. For communities like Kamal’s, coming together in a formal group has changed

everything. Together, they are learning new skills, saving money and fighting back against climate change. Through planting trees, investing in small businesses, and saving in case of disasters, community groups are building resilience and standing strong in the face of darkness. Will you stand in solidarity with groups like Kamal’s this Christmas, and invest in the hope of a better world? Together, we can find new solutions and remain strong in these dark and difficult times. FIND OUT MORE AND DONATE HERE

Camino Pilgrims Arrive! The Traidcraft Exchange Camino de Santiago team has completed their challenge! After two years of waiting, the team finally set off from misty Sarria to walk the final 116km of the Camino Frances – and encountered all four seasons of Galicia’s changeable weather – in some cases over the course of one day! Our team, which had been Zooming together throughout the lockdowns, comprised of Traidcraft Exchange supporters, pioneering Traidcraft sellers and Traidcraft Exchange staff from both UK offices – and we were easily spotted by our fellow pilgrims by our striking teal t-shirts! With every step taken, every undulation over steep terrain and every blister plaster applied, the team were reminded of one thing - that their phenomenal fundraising efforts were helping deliver trade justice for those who need it most across the world. The final approach through the pilgrim’s gate in Santiago was met with a short prayer and a moment of reflection – before celebration, photos in front of the iconic cathedral façade and a wellearned rest for our wonderful, weary pilgrims. We’d like to say a huge thank you to all our pilgrims and everyone who has sponsored the trek – thanks to you, we will be able to support even more people at the front line of climate and trade justice. If you’d like to show your appreciation for the amazing Camino Team, and haven’t yet sponsored them, head on over to traidcraftexchange.org/ donate and select ‘Camino de Santiago trek’ in the drop-down menu. ¡Buen Camino!

Year on year, backed by you, we ramp up our anti-Black Friday activities. You’ve come to expect from us:  No flash sales encouraging you to buy more than you need  100% transparency  Downing tools to fight injustice in society This year is no different.

We love trees! They don’t just look pretty (although, they’re certainly aesthetically pleasing!), but they’re vital for the health of our planet. They absorb carbon, offsetting harmful byproducts of fossil-fuel burning, and improve air quality by giving off oxygen, as well as providing shade, shelter and safety for birds and other species. Trees also play a key role in capturing rainwater and reducing the risk of natural disasters like floods and landslides. Planting trees across the world is one of the biggest (and cheapest!) ways to fight the climate crisis, by taking carbon out of our atmosphere. That’s why this Black Friday, we’re doing just that – plant trees, trees and more trees!

'plant trees, trees and more trees!' Along with our friends at Traidcraft Exchange and Urban Green, we will be downing tools and planting fruit trees in our local area, on Black Friday.

22 traidcraftshop.co.uk

A Tree-mendous Idea! The tree planting doesn’t stop there – we want you, our loyal community of ethical shoppers, to be able to fight climate injustice with us on Black Friday and beyond. This is why we’re offering you the chance to get involved, by helping us reach our target of planting...
