Happy fair trading! Fairtrade certified sugar was first launched in several European markets in the late 1990s, followed by the UK in 2000.

On The Road Again What a difference three months make!

November last year, it looked as if we were going to have to close and this February, we will be on the road with an impromptu Spring tour. While the team in the office are working on the Spring/Summer 19 catalogue, we are delighted to be on the road.

For years now we have held regular warehouse clearances at our Gateshead HQ and many of you have commented on how you would like to be able to attend but are unable due to distance. So, we will be bringing a van packed with goodies so you can have a good rummage, pick up a bargain and restock on craft items post-Christmas.

The Day’s Agenda

At each roadshow we will hold a seminar. The seminars will give you a

The talks will be repeated twice during the day, giving you the opportunity to come for the morning, afternoon or for the full day. Bookings are looking strong, however there are still spaces at both events. The team will be waiting with a smiling face and a warm cuppa. However, if you are planning

Update from Robin

Hard Times

Excitement

The last few months have been some of the hardest in our history. Facing up to the fact that the old way of working was going to bankrupt us was tough. We were trying to cover too many bases in an ever more competitive world.

Looking forward I feel genuine excitement. We are leaner and nimbler, and we share enormous passion about what we do. Fair trade has been the most monumental success, far beyond the dreams of the pioneers who started things off back in the 1970s. It is mainstream and it’s here to stay. We need to just take a moment and be thankful for all the hours of effort and (mostly unpaid) work from volunteers who got us here. You can celebrate your achievements to the full.

But once we knew what we had to do, and once we felt the surge of support from so many of you, the ride was easier to negotiate. Thank you.

We have said goodbye to many, many wonderful colleagues. We have managed our resources faithfully and ensured that everyone was able to leave with their full redundancy payment and we have also ensured that every single supplier received full payment for all their deliveries. These are not small matters when I look around at the way many businesses treat their staff and suppliers when times get tough.

4

We know also that fair trade will never be perfect, and that it’s easy to snipe and complain that supermarkets have merely jumped on the bandwagon of convenience, but it is still possible to enjoy the knowledge that hard-nosed, passionless and ruthless buyers in multinational corporations know that they can’t drop the label without a huge stink and plenty of adverse publicity. This is fantastic. How wonderful that we are such a pain in the neck!

Deal or No Deal As for Traidcraft, we are looking at the future and we see a lot of turbulence ahead. We don’t know whether tariffs of around 10% will hit us on April 1st, or if the pound will drop again if we leave the EU without a deal. We don’t know what paperwork will have to be completed to move goods in or out of the UK. This is frustrating, but almost irrelevant in the face of the real challenges ahead.

Good Stewards Climate change is having a significant, occasionally existential, impact on our producer friends. As one coffee farmer told us, each year the co-operative is having to plant its coffee bushes further up the mountain to escape the rampant infestations plaguing the valleys due to the warmer weather. At some point, he told us, you run out of mountain, and what does he do then? We know that the health of the soil is the beginning of all good farming and we are keen to pursue our work with cooperatives who are working organically, feeding bio-diversity, developing rain capture systems, processing and re-mulching their waste efficiently. It may mean that we all have to learn to live a little more simply, investing in what is good rather than buying what is cheap.

We are determined to be good stewards of our resources: this means putting the true principles of fair trade into commercial practice.

We have enough to be getting on with, and we want to make sure that our partners have enough too. I hope you will continue to support us on this mission. Robin Roth - CEO

Introducing Malawi

meet the people tours

meet the people tours

A MEET THE PEOPLE TOUR INSIGHT

It’s for good reason that Malawi is often described as the warm heart of Africa, and the friendly welcomes and inspiring stories make for an unforgettable Meet the People holiday. Lake Malawi

Our tour explores the north of the country where the land rises from the warm shores of Lake Malawi up into hills perfect for cultivating delicious coffee, and levels out at the Nyika plateau where we go in search of zebra, elephants and the elusive leopard! The first stop on our journey north gives us a delicious taste of what is to come as we settle down in the local cafĂŠ for a delicious mug of Mzuzu coffee. In the coming days we meet smallholder coffee farmers like Martha who shows with pride her plot of organic coffee bushes and explains how she cares for the plants and ensures that only the best quality cherries are taken for harvest. As we travel from place to place, the team of local guides make every stop an experience as

we shop at village stalls to stock up on essentials of fresh tomatoes and bananas and learn a few greetings along the way. You might even want to try your hand at making nsima using the traditional technique to pound the flour! No trip would be complete without taking time to enjoy Lake Malawi. Formed by a fault in the Great Rift Valley, the ancient lake is always a highlight. On the northern shores we join farmers as they gather their harvest of Kilombero rice. A speciality grain known throughout Malawi for its quality and taste, at this cooperative it holds a special significance as the fair price they receive is making schooling accessible for farming families and funding scholarships for children in the community.

40th Birthday Big Brew! It’s a big year for the Traidcraft Family – 40 years of fighting for a fairer and more just world.

To celebrate, we at Traidcraft Exchange are hosting an extra special Big Brew birthday party as part of Fairtrade Fortnight! If you have not yet already received a pack, you can order one from us free of charge.

THERE’S STILL TIME TO GET YOUR PACK Visit our site: www.traidcraftshop.co.uk /big-brew-pack-2019 Or call us on: 0191 497 6445

After a difficult year, Traidcraft plc has found a new structure and new hope for the future and is ready to celebrate 40 years of trading. We think there’s a lot to celebrate – from fair trade firsts to pioneering new directions, the Traidcraft story is an inspirational one, and you’re at the heart of it. Traidcraft Exchange are part of that too – and that’s why we are dedicating our Big Brew to celebrating 40 years of the Traidcraft story!

8

Want to join us? To celebrate, we’re asking amazing supporters like you to fundraise for Traidcraft Exchange – and help even more people living in poverty get a better deal from trade. What better way to mark 40 years than by changing more lives for the better?

How? Whether by hosting a Big Brew, or taking on a ’40 themed challenge’ – baking 40 cakes to sell, walking 40 miles, swimming 40 lengths or wearing a silly hat for 40 days, we want you to join us in celebrating 40 years of fairness – after all, none of it would have happened without supporters like you.

Resources If you’d like help, sponsorship forms, collection envelopes, leaflets or other resources to help make your 40th celebrations a success, you can find them at www.traidcraft.org.uk/bigbrew, or give us a call – we’d love to hear about your plans!

Important Product Updates Stem Ginger Cookies

Tropical Wholefoods

We are currently out of stock of the Stem Ginger Cookies, we had hoped that they would be back in stock in January. We are updating the packaging and also the ingredients used in the biscuits. The Stem ginger currently used in the biscuits is not fair trade because at the time this was not an available ingredient, it now is available. We are doing a line trial with this new ingredient in February and hope to get the product back in stock in March. Where an ingredient can be fair trade, it should be fair trade. In the meantime for those Ginger biscuit fans we do still have available the GEOBAKES Ginger Snap biscuits.

Our Store cupboard ingredients will be moving over into Tropical Wholefoods packaging, the products are exactly the same, we are working closer now with our friends at Tropical Wholefoods. Watch out for some new products in next months Bulletin!

GEOMUESLI

Meaningful Chocolate Company

We will be doing the last production run of GEOMUESLI Very Berry this month but the rest of the range will be continuing.

GEOBAR Last year saw the last production of our GEOBAR range. With the supermarkets no longer selling GEOBARS we were unable to sustain further production runs so the hard decision was taken to stop producing them.

Get to know us better... 12

Clean and Fair The Product range is being re-formulated with a different type of FairPalm oil, once we have confirmation that this product works we will be revieing the range and bringing back to you, I hope to update you with more progress on this next month.

Both Milk and Dark Easter eggs will be available as singles and cases to buy.

Divine The 35g and 90g will be back in the range along with the Easter range from Divine. Lizy White - Product Development
