WELCOME Hi, Jo here, welcome to the September edition of Living Fair. It’s great to have you here. Something that has got me really excited is that we have managed to squeeze into September our first focus group and I have a merry band of volunteers. Admittedly, I’m a little apprehensive about it as it’s the first time we’ve done it, but a big thank you to those who have been in touch and are happy to be involved. We’re looking forward to speaking to you! Hands up if you got our catalogue? What do you think? Love it or hate it, please do let me know. A significant change this time has been the increase in the pages, bigger images, bigger font, hopefully making for a good browse. From September onwards, we enter

our busy “selling season” and given the year we’ve had, we’re a little anxious on how that is going to go, the media focus on recession and furloughing ending October 2020 has got most of us jittery. So, if you are Christmas planning, we’d love it if you would bear us in mind. On a positive note, I’m a big fan of Christmas, love it. The eating, the giving, the receiving, the dressing up, the catching up with good friends, yeah, you get it. Just about everything… Of course, I’m a Traidcraft shopper as well. So, some of the goodies on my list to buy for friends and family are the Thought Majolica Leggings on catalogue page 122 and the Women’s Flock of Sheep hat on page 142. Love a novelty hat! Take care and catch up soon,

Jo x

This year has brought more changes to our world than anyone could have foreseen. With more of us seeking solutions to help restore nature, health and a safe climate, becoming part of the organic movement can make a world of difference. This year has brought more changes to our world than anyone could have foreseen. With more of us seeking solutions to help restore nature, health and a safe climate, becoming part of the organic movement can make a world of difference. GET INVOLVED

What is Organic September? In the face of climate change, diet related illhealth and widespread decline in wildlife, the need to change our food systems has never been greater. Organic September is a month-long campaign to raise awareness of the many benefits of organic food and farming, which include: • Supporting biodiversity and wildlife • Helping to combat climate change • The highest standards of animal welfare • Reduced exposure to pesticides • Food as it should be, and food you can trust This September, Organic Trade Board are challenging us to make #ONESIMPLESWAP to an Organic product, assuring us that one small swap makes a huge difference to our planet.

You’ll have noticed a few poems slipping into your publications over the last few months. That’s because, Sarah, our Living Fair Editor, is a huge poetry fan… and it seems to have set your creative juices flowing too! Thanks for sending this one in, Brenda – we loved reading it!

Ode to lockdown This 2020 is strange to be sure, Something has happened we’ve not seen before, We heard on the news it was coming our way, So the PM said ‘At home you must stay’. For some like me, they ordered 12 weeks, Until this new virus has passed its peaks. Being good, I did as I was told, Every day sheltering from the sun or cold. After recovering from the first shock, I started to worry about Traidcraft stock! The Easter eggs were still on the shelves, What a hardship to buy and eat them ourselves! With ‘sell by’ dates checked and some stock back here, I hope this doesn’t go on ‘til next year! The younger and fitter soon came to the rescue, Saying ‘we’ll do your shopping’ – I didn’t argue! They tell me the world is a strange, new place, People queuing to shop with a mask on their face. Now still trapped at home with so much more time Not to make good use of it would be a crime, I could sort out the garden, if I feel fit, But I think I’ll just sit down and knit, Clearing that cupboard means bending my knees, So I’ll just sit here watching the birds and the bees!

Brenda Flay Feeling inspired? Feel free to send us your work – we love having a look over what you talented bunch are getting up to!

Lockdown Landscapes Our lovely colleague and friend, Steve, has put his talents to good use during lockdown by picking up his paint brushes and painting these beautiful pieces, alla prima style. Not only that, but he has gifted one to each of us here at Traidcraft. What a kind and thoughtful thing to do – we are chuffed to bits! “The late Bob Ross was one of my idols. He was famously quoted, “we don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents”. I wanted to use my time in lockdown to do something I love and create something special for my colleagues.”

Oops!

We noticed the following amends after our catalogue went to print - apologies! P126 - Thought Women’s Walker Organic Cotton Blend Spotted Socks in Turquoise (69460) price is £9.95 not £6.95 P149 - Festive Hamper (60124) price is £55 not £60 traidcraftshop.co.uk

BEHIND THE SCENES

For our catalogue photoshoots, we use family-run, local photographers, CTP Creative Imaging, who are located in picturesque Northumberland. Apart from regularly running completely off-grid (thanks to 10 kilowatt solar panels on the studio roof), CTP Creative Imaging have used their time during lockdown to plant a small orchard of apple trees in their grounds, to help offset their carbon footprint.

This season’s photoshoot was a little bit unusual, in that we socially distanced and wore face coverings at all times, but we still had great fun doing it, as always! We hope that you love the new images of our exciting and innovative product range this year. traidcraftshop.co.uk

raidcraft’s Organic hamper arrives a rainbow of colour, packed with produce from Mexico to Sri Lanka. I tuck in, hungry for the adventure wrapped up inside. Like most, I’ve been tied to one place for the last few months, and the contents of the basket are akin to an around the world ticket, offering a chance to reminisce of travels past and plan future trips. But where to begin? I like to start the day with a Fairtrade coffee and love trying new blends and brands. There is nothing better than the smell of a newly opened bag of coffee, and Traidcraft’s Peru Coyona doesn’t disappoint. As a pioneer of fair trade coffee, Traidcraft has had time to perfect the art of producing high-quality coffee 12 traidcraftshop.co.uk

that’s good for both people and planet. The Fairtrade mark guarantees that farmers enjoy a secure livelihood, and receive a price for their coffee that covers the cost of sustainable production. This blend of Organic arabica beans come from the Sol Y Cafe Cooperative in Cajamarca. Their ethos is about balancing quality of

life with producing quality coffee and makes for a perfect bold yet balanced cup that can take you from morning to evening. Together with Traidcraft’s mint chocolate, the cocoa and coffee pairing make a decadent after-dinner treat. The chocolate is smooth yet intense, and along with the fresh kick of the mint fondant, it

offers a creamy, lively mouthful. The taste attests to the care and time taken to produce the bar. The Organic cocoa harvested by farmers in Fairtrade cooperatives in Peru, Bolivia and the Dominican Republic is blended or ‘conched’ for hours. With ingredients produced to Fairtrade and Organic standards, no added nasties and wrapped in compostable packaging, could this be one of the most guilt-free, great tasting chocolates out there?

Ffion splits her time between her family’s farm in Wales and Brussels, working on projects focused on making the world a better place. She loves food but hates exploitation. " EMPOWERING WOMEN IS AT THE HEA RT OF FA IRTRA DE, WOR K I NG TO MA KE SURE WOMEN’S VO I C ES A RE REPRESENTED A ND HEA R D". All the products in this basket are versatile, but none more so than the delicately flavoured and textured Mexican Blossom Clear Honey. Harvested from the forests of Oaxaca, the sweet yet spicy aroma of this golden liquid floats up as soon as you open the jar. Delicious simply spread on a piece of toast, mixed into a salad dressing or taking centre stage in a cocktail. I shook up some honey with the aptly named pollinator gin from the Dyfi Valley and a splash of lemon juice for a light refreshment. Humans have been enjoying honey for millennia, but our actions today are driving bees to extinction; threatening livelihoods, food production and biodiversity. Organic and smallholder farmers such as those in the Flor de Campanilla Cooperative are working in harmony with nature to protect bees and their nectar. From one sweet treat to another, Tropical Wholefoods’ dried mangoes make a great snack - a delicious bite of summer. Soaked, they can bring an exotic twist to a myriad of dishes all year round. I made mango compote for breakfast with some of mine, but I’m planning on getting some more for making mango chutney and putting a spin on bara brith, a traditional Welsh fruit loaf. These mangoes are sourced via an established relationship based on fairness and respect, providing secure incomes, particularly for women in Burkina Faso, one of the world’s poorest countries. Though women produce more than half of the food grown worldwide, they have less access to resources such as land, training and credit. Empowering women is at the heart of Fairtrade, working to make sure women’s voices are represented and heard. traidcraftshop.co.uk

I’m no stranger to Zaytoun’s products. I’ve gifted their flavoursome oil to the food lovers in my life, and their incredible dates - mainly to myself. But maftoul is new to me. With a visit to Zaytoun’s website, I was able to hear from the women who hand roll the sun-dried bulgur wheat to create the beautiful pearls of giant couscous. They share how Fairtrade has given them equal rights in their own country, financial stability and helping to keep their heritage alive. For me, sustainability is as much about culture and tradition as it is about pesticides and greenhouse gases.

Having been introduced to maftoul’s distant cousin freekeh during a visit to Lebanon a few years back, I knew that I wanted to use the maftoul in a dish that would be shared by a full table. I chose to experiment with a recipe by Sami Tamimi, author of the cookbook Falastin. With many of the ingredients in his spicy green maftoul salad ready to harvest from the veg patch, together the nuttiness of Zaytoun’s oil and the plump texture of maftoul unleashed new flavours from homegrown food. I’m excited to use them in risottos, pestos and soups through the autumn. I’m even more excited to join one of Zaytoun’s trips to meet the producers one day.

Ma’s Organic Coconut Milk is one of my cupboard staples. Most often used in curries, since trying the rice pudding recipe shared on the side of the tin, I’ve been experimenting with sweeter combinations. As it’s blackberry season, I whipped up the coconut milk and foraged berries before freezing to create a slab of delicious blackberry ice cream. I studied for a while in Sri Lanka, and a taste of coconut brings back memories of the island. Sri Lanka is the fourth largest exporter of coconuts in the world, but producers do not always receive a fair deal. I keep reaching back for Ma’s for its ethical credentials, and as a result, its premium quality. The entire contents of this hamper dispel the once believed idea that fair trade in some way means a compromise on quality. It’s a basket of award-wining produce that respect the heritage and expertise of their producers, with their commitment to Organic production safeguarding livelihoods and the environment for future generations. While the eating may be fleeting; the positive impact is long-lasting. And when the food has long gone, the fair trade basket, handwoven by artisans in Bangladesh, can be repurposed, a reminder of the adventures it once contained. 14 traidcraftshop.co.uk

EATING ORGANIC DO YOU CARE? WHY SHOULD YOU? THOUGHTS FROM ROBIN ROTH

I came across one of those jokey fridge magnets a while back which read: “Try eating organic food. Or what your grandparents just used to call ‘Food.’” Michael Pollen is an American journalist turned expert on the food industry and in his book “Eat Food, Not too Much. Mostly Plants.” He makes the same point much more seriously. Real food, food that is healthy and good for you, is something that our great grandparents would have recognised instinctively. It came from 16 traidcraftshop.co.uk

the field outside the village, it was grown by a farmer whose name you knew, it wasn’t covered in pesticide or chemical fertiliser, and it didn’t come via a factory where unpronounceables like maltodextrin or sodium tripolyphosphate were somehow added in. Pollen goes further: “real food is generally not advertised on TV, it doesn’t get served to you through the window of a car, and it doesn’t change the colour of your milk when you have a bowl of cereals.

“ TRY EATING ORGANIC

FOOD. OR WHAT YOUR GRANDPARENTS JUST USED TO CALL ‘FOOD'

Most of the food we eat has been processed beyond recognition, beefed up with hormones, additives, and sugar or chemical compounds derived from corn or soja. It doesn’t do to dwell on the subject for too long.” Or maybe it does. Michael Pollen began his long journey of discovery when he decided to cook a meal for himself with products that he had either grown, foraged or hunted for himself – a natural meal that his grandparents, or more likely his great grandparents would have considered normal. The quest has something romantic and quaint about it, but the discoveries he makes are anything but. He visits industrial slaughterhouses of an unimaginable scale, gets to glimpse, ever so briefly, behind the scenes of chemical food production and he talks to farmers caught up in the crazy world of terminator seeds, pesticide and ever bigger yields which provide ever decreasing profits.

Many fair trade farmers have been working towards Organic accreditation for years. They have long understood that buying chemical fertiliser and pesticide does not make economic sense, and only contributes to the degradation of their soil. I am so proud to know that the very first commercially available organic tea in the world came from a fair trade source in Sri Lanka back in the 1980s. The local pioneer behind the change told me that the impetus to go organic had come from two sources; firstly the workers had long complained about carrying 35kg sacks of poisonous, chemical fertiliser up steep hills in blistering heat, and secondly a fair trade company was willing to pay for the organic conversion process and pay additional premiums for a healthier cup of tea. The opportunity to change was there for the taking.

He also gets to see the alternative; grass grown meat and multi-cropped organic food. In his book “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” he encounters real organic farming and is side-tracked into the world of the circular economy.

Choosing to eat organic is a highly political decision. If you do, you undermine the multinational business model of take-makewaste and support, instead, a farmer who aims to keep, re-use and regenerate. It is the same principle as fair trade: rewarding the grower whilst simultaneously enjoying a better quality as a consumer.

The circular economy suggests that you should put back into the process as much as you get out if it, and with food this is entirely possible. The sun’s energy provides all that food needs to grow, the rest is a careful marshalling of our resources: soil, seed and water.

This month the Organic Trade Board is encouraging consumers just to try changing one product to organic. I would suggest that changing one product to organic and fair trade would be even better. So little to ask, but with such profound consequences for the world. traidcraftshop.co.uk

The Difference You’ve Made

Traidcraft Exchange has recently published our annual report ‘The Difference you’ve made’ to share all that we have accomplished together over the last year - and looking back, it’s been quite a year! Thanks to you, thousands of people across the world have had the support they need to get more from their hard work – and increase their incomes, build resilience, and change their lives for the better. Because that’s really what is at the heart of transforming trade – supporting people to get the kind of fair deal which gives them choices – and helps them to invest in a brighter, fairer future for their families and communities. Over the last year, we’ve worked directly with 72,434 people. From building climate change resilience and encouraging eco-friendly fruit harvesting, to improving working conditions for homeworkers and empowering people with disabilities, our work has been truly life-changing for people across the world – and it’s thanks to the 22 traidcraftshop.co.uk

kindness of people like you. From the farmers’ groups we’ve helped form in Bangladesh using their networks to distribute rice to their communities, to cooperative members drawing on their group savings schemes to support their families through lockdowns, the projects and campaigns you’ve supported in the past year have helped people build resilience. It’s inspiring to see that the achievements of last year are helping people get through this difficult present. Looking back, 2019/20 seems like a very different world – but despite all the uncertainties we face, and the new challenges we face, we know one thing for certain – that without the support of amazing people like you, who donate, take on challenges, sign petitions and help us in so many ways, none of this would be possible. When garment factories can’t meet orders from European and North American retailers, they turn to individual women working at home to do the work. These women are the hidden hands behind the garments we wear. The women desperately need the income, particularly now because of coronavirus. But they have no power to negotiate their wages. They are paid as little as 30p for 8 hours work. Some of them are paid only twice a year. And they have none of the rights they would expect if they worked in a factory. To celebrate, will you hold a Big Brew - Harvest to raise money for Traidcraft Exchange, and help vulnerable communities begin to recover from this pandemic? It’s as simple as getting a few friends together, in whatever way you can (keep an eye on government regulations!), and sharing a socially distanced brew and a slice or two of cake - in exchange for small donations towards the work we do to improve livelihoods across the world. Our programmes help farmers across the world increase their harvests - and their pay packets as a

Homeworkers look after children and other family members while doing this work. It’s time to honour homeworkers. There’s nothing wrong with homeworking. But the exploitation must stop. Traidcraft Exchange is calling for homeworkers to have the same rights as all workers. You can take action alongside us. Add your name to say homeworkers must have the same rights as all workers.

result - and your Big Brew - Harvest donations will help us change lives from Bangladesh to Senegal and beyond. This year, it’s more important than ever that the next harvest goes well for farmers across the world. During lockdown, many communities were unable to harvest their crops, and those that were harvested often went unsold due to closed markets. The coming harvest is critical for communities to get back on their feet. With all our lovely packs now gone, we wanted to make sure no one missed out – so we’ve got everything you need to get started on our website – from posters, to an event guide, sermon, quiz and recipe cards.
