What Does Fair Trade Mean to You? During the weeks preceding Fairtrade Fortnight and during the fortnight itself, we’re having a think about our own relationships with fair trade and what it means to us. This question has certainly got the old grey matter working in our office, and we’ve discovered that each and every individual has a truly unique relationship with fair trade. Here’s an insight into what fair trade means to some of us.

Are there any values that you are willing to fight for? Go to prison for? Die for? I suspect that most of you will be slightly taken aback by that question, if not somewhat embarrassed. Apart from the obvious, (Brexit) we are, by and large, a compromise seeking nation not prone to outbursts of civil disobedience. Getting passionate about something is, quite honestly, a bit juvenile and awkward for friends and family to deal with. It’s certainly getting harder to be passionate about fair trade when even the most frequently boycotted and despised food multi-nationals have their token range of ethical products on the shelves. And in any case, what really is fair trade nowadays? What exactly are we fighting for? Ask 10 different people and you will get the proverbial 20 different answers. At Traidcraft, as we reboot the company, we have recently been spending time trying to capture precisely what it is that we are passionate about, because if we are not passionate, then what is the point? We’d just be selling products without a purpose. (If you really want to know about how to get arrested, do keep reading by the way.)

We found that there were exactly three things we agreed on, which, given that there are 12 of us, came as a bit of a surprise. 6

Firstly, we are actively, openly, noisily passionate about equality: gender, sex, religion, opportunity, regardless of background, heritage, experience or inheritance. It’s possible to be in agreement with all of this, of course, but it is quite a different thing to fight for it. It is, thanks to a few, quite remarkable individuals that we have what is today known as the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” Between the end of World War II and the start of the Cold War, just as the UN was being established in New York, Eleanor Roosevelt and a small team of international diplomats pulled together one of our richest heritages. When we promote fair trade we promote international co-operation and respect for each other. For us, fair trade is about social justice. Secondly, we burn strongly for trade justice. 40 years of fair trade has done nothing to counter the incredible power imbalances in international trade. It’s provided an alternative for a few lucky groups, but world-wide the impact has been negligible. It’s not easy to understand this unless you experience it first hand, but when a company that trades more than 10% of the world’s cocoa comes to your cooperative and tells you exactly what price you will be getting for your few measly tonnes of cocoa, you don’t enter into negotiations. You doff your cap, you take what’s given, and you don’t complain lest you are boycotted the following year. For us, fair trade is about economic justice.

Thirdly, we are increasingly concerned and worried about the killer effects that climate change is having on our partners. The reality of climate change will not hit us in the UK for a few years yet. For producers who are reliant on fickle weather patterns and fragile eco systems, the pain has already started. And of course, one bad harvest means debt, often at ruinous interest rates, or a move to the shanty towns and slums of the many new megacities. We don’t feel the pain – (yet) – but if the poor small holders, who produce 70% of the world’s crops can no longer harvest, we will feel it sooner rather than later. For us, trade is about environmental justice.

So, would we really be willing to get arrested for any of this? In Columbia, members of the Communidad de la Paz (Peace community) were willing to risk death throughout the long guerrilla war between the FARC and the government by refusing admission or passage to anyone carrying weapons through their lands. Volunteers from around the world agreed to spend months sleeping with the farmers to “protect” them. Social justice to the point of death, anyone...?

being taken by the government. Their goal is to address the real issues created by runaway climate change. Have a look at Extinction Rebellion online – and be inspired. These are serious, thoughtful and highly profession academics who are prepared to go to prison because the cause is too urgent. Environmental justice even in the polite UK?

At Traidcraft we have begun by challenging ourselves. Where is our passion? What will we fight for? Well, the above is just a part of what we’re thinking, and month by month we want to start sharing with you more of our thoughts. We hope you will be inspired as we change our culture from one of “being terribly polite” to one of being something more challenging. Others are prepared to go to the wire for their values, and we owe it to the millions in poverty to make a stand for their social, economic and environmental rights. Who knows, the next bulletin may be being written from a police cell…!

For years, right wing paramilitaries ravaged throughout Latin America ensuring that cooperative leaders were quickly and effectively silenced. Some of the best-known fruit brands like Ffyfes, Del Monte, Chiquita and Dole stand accused of human rights abuses in the name of profit. Economic justice for torture? And here in the UK, there is right now a group of climate scientists and academics who are utterly appalled at the science they are observing, compared with the lack of action 7

On the Road Again, a Report... Over the last few weeks we have held two roadshows in London and Birmingham, as well as two satellite fair trader information events in Nottingham and Fleet. In total, we have met with around 300 fair traders and retailers, sharing with them the journey of Traidcraft over the last five months. We have also been able to speak at Manchester and Leicester Cathedrals, as part of their Fairtrade Fortnight celebrations. For those of you who have not been able to attend one these events, here is a summary of the talks given. If you have a group of local fair traders you would like to gather, we would be delighted to attend and facilitate where possible.

Autumn Winter 2018 In October last year we conducted our usual Autumn tour, at which we said that this was truly a ‘make or break’ year for Traidcraft. Our turnaround plans to separate the charity from the PLC and put both organisations on a solid footing had hit a series of bumps in the road. While Traidcraft Exchange was flourishing, the PLC was experiencing difficulties. We buy most of our stock in U.S. dollars. Post referendum, the pound dropped against the dollar, and while we managed to hedge some monies, it was not enough to cover the estimated 27% increase in the costs of goods. We also invested in a new web shop, as the one we had was ten years old and not fit for purpose. Initial testing went well. However, when the web shop went live, many glitches were found. This led to literally tens of thousands of abandoned baskets and thousands of customers looking elsewhere.

8

We have not been immune to the difficulties that large retailers like House of Fraser, Debenhams and Pound World (as well as others) have faced. 2018 has proved to be a truly difficult generally for retailers in the UK. While we were on the road, poor sales led the board to make the tough decision to announce that Traidcraft may have to cease trading at the end of the year. As a values based, alternative trading company, we had the opportunity to show the world that if we were to close, this is how it should be done, without a penny being owed to staff, creditors or suppliers. After the announcement, a group of four staff got together and looked to see if there was any part of the business that could be saved. After three weeks of development, a business plan was created and submitted to the board. The board commissioned an independent party to do due diligence on the plan and to confirm its viability. In early December the plan was given the green light, job descriptions written and all staff were invited to apply if interested.

The Plan

The Ethos

The plan is relatively simple; to bring a focused product offering, under a single brand, to a focused customer group. While there are many structural changes that also needed to be addressed, the main issue for Traidcraft is that our position as a fair trade pioneer had led to us trying to be, ‘all things fair trade, to all people.’ As a result, Triadcraft was spread too thinly. There are several successful fair trade companies out there and the thing they all have in common is focus.

Traidcraft will continue to put the principles of fair trade into commercial practice. As custodians of Traidcraft, the team want to take the pioneering spirit of those who went before us and continue to break the rules, speaking ‘truth to power’, we will combine our historic battle for equality with a desire to protect the environment through sustainable and organic products.

Initially, we will be focusing our product offering on grocery. Craft, while profitable is a very seasonal product group. We need to budget on constant, regular, repeat custom while we rebuild. The full range of products was published in the January bulletin. As each product’s packaging runs out, we will review the type of packaging used, redesign and bring it under the Traidcraft brand. Many of the craft producers we work with now have other UK outlets for their products through the British association of Fair Trade Suppliers and Shops (BAFTS). We will have a small craft range of around 30 products that we will source from BAFTS members. This means we can keep a closer control on costs, quality and quantity of stock being purchased. This core range will be topped up seasonally with additional lines at Christmas and Easter. We will also be continuing to stock Easter, Christmas and everyday cards.

We don’t want to lecture people on the amount they consume, just encourage them to buy enough for their needs, while making sure they pay enough. By doing this we are saying that Traidcraft has had enough of the injustices of this world caused by unethical trade. In making sure that the people who produce the item being bought have received enough, and that planet has been treated right in the process, we can truly make a difference as an alternative trading organisation.

We also believe the future of fair trade is transparency. Over the coming months we will start to share exactly how our products benefit the producer financially, how they impact the environment and how we operate as a business. Finally, we want to be a member led organisation. One that give its members a say in how it operates and business decisions we make. We will be exploring these themes over the course of the year, with a view to launching both programmes either late this year or early 2020.

9

The Structure We have removed much of the historic hierarchy and are exploring working in a flattened, Holacratic structure. This will make us more agile and able to make decisions quicker. Each member of the team now has a high level of autonomy to make decisions. They also have a higher level of accountability to one another. We have also flattened our pay structure, there are now only two pay-bands and the difference between the highest and lowest paid members of the team has been reduced.

A Slow Start We could only take 12 people into this new venture. At the end of December, we said goodbye to many friends and colleagues. Our offices were a sad and difficult place to be, as literally hundreds of years of experience left the building. With so many people leaving and the Christmas trading period being upon us, we could only really get going in January. One of the disadvantages of being transparent is that when we announced we may have to cease trading, many of our suppliers removed our credit with them. In addition, our manufactures, assuming we would not be here in 2019, did not reorder packaging. So, while delighted we were continuing to trade, we did not have any packaging available. These issues are now resolved, but turning the taps back on has taken a little longer than we had hoped. The really good news is that sales for January and February have been on target and the Spring catalogue (which would normally have been completed in October, but was only started in January) will be ready for the end of March. I was asked at one event, “what can we do to help?” There are three things…

1.

10

2. 3.

Please keep going… we know it can be frustrating not hearing from us and we will improve our communication with you all. As a PLC, we cannot always share everything that is going on. Thank you for your amazing response over Christmas. We would not be here now with the opportunity to keep going without it. Please pray… Traidcraft was founded on Christian principles. As I reflect on the last five months, I can see how God’s hand has been upon us. Please, if you are of a religious persuasion, pray for the team as we continue to rebuild. Please keep us accountable… to the plans we have and the dream we have to break the rules, make a difference, and make fairness the norm.

Matt

Fair Trader Feedback Thanks Matt, Jo and Kirsty for bringing us news of all your hard work and future plans, and all the reduced stock for our stalls. An inspiring and enjoyable morning x

Maggie Thanks Matt & your lovely team for all your hard work today & Matt for your informative & encouraging talk. Here's to a brave & fair future.

Really appreciate everyone’s hard work. You certainly go the extra mile - or should that be miles?

Thank you again and have a safe journey home.

Sue

Ruth

Many thanks Matt and Team Traidcraft for an excellent Roadshow and for sharing your vision for the future of Traidcraft.

Dear Matt,

I just wanted to pass on some very positive comments from the Fair Trader at my church who was at the event on Saturday. She said it was the best one she had been to, and said that you, personally, had been brilliant, you had got the tone exactly right, had spoken to people’s faith, and had been ‘mint’.

So well done - realise it is all a bit of a struggle - but hope you know that the Board and so many customers/supporters/fair traders are wishing you on to success. Well done and best wishes,

Jenny 11

Tropical Wholefoods Snack Bar Review We were over the moon when three of the latest flavours of Tropical Wholefoods’ fruit bars landed on our desk for us to review. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it. Coming highly rated, with no artificial additives, colourings or preservatives and promising to be ‘bursting with flavour’, it’s time to see for ourselves what all the fuss is about.

The great thing about Tropical Wholefoods is that they pay fair prices in advance, develop and market the farmers’ products and share useful technology and experience with overseas partners. Starting its life in Uganda in the early 1990s, Tropical Wholefoods began helping Ugandan farmers sell their fruits at good prices in European markets.

Firstly, let’s have a look at these bars in a little more detail. We’ve got three different flavours to choose from; apricot and raisin, date and walnut and pineapple and cashew. All 100% organic, low saturated fat bars, suitable for vegans and a great source of fibre – they’re ticking all the boxes so far.

They realised that the best way to do this sustainably was to solar dry the fruit, as this adds value, extends shelf life, makes fruit more transportable, retains waste at the source and uses only renewable energy. It also means that for the consumer, fruits are even more tasty, as they are dried when fresh and ripe so true flavours are captured – which bodes well for our review. With this in mind, let’s get down to the tasting.

12

Organic Apricot & Raisin Bar Made with a medley of organic ingredients including rolled oats, Hunza apricots, raisins, barley flakes, apricot kernels, apple juice and sunflower oil, we started on a high with the apricot and raisin bar. Very soft, chewy and moist, the strong flavours immediately surface and the promise of a ‘flavour burst’ was certainly delivered. The compacted oats and fruit make for a welcome dense mouthful, and, although a sweet treat, you can’t help but feeling like it’s a wholesome and healthy one, too. Coming with 2.4g per bar, this one is packed with the highest percentage of fibre, which is an essential part of a healthy diet.

Organic Date & Walnut Bar The Tropical Wholefoods Date and Walnut bar sent waves through our office. Made up of 35% oats, the high fruit content is evident before you’ve even taken your first bite. The delightful, naturally sweet aroma hits and the taste to follow does not disappoint. With a soft, almost caramel-like texture, this strong, sweet bar almost melts in the mouth, complemented by the crunchy walnut pieces which follow. With 2.6g of protein and 1.8g of fibre, this nourishing bar is packed with wholesome goodness and if you’re a fan of dates, you will not be disappointed.

Organic Pineapple & Cashew Nut Bar Last, but by no means least, the pineapple and cashew fruit bar. This one is much tangier than the others, which isn’t a bad thing! A real taste bud tingler, the pineapple and cashew bar is the perfect blend of bitter, interspersed with sweet bursts of pineapple. The bar itself has a harder and more rigid consistency than its counterparts, which adds a welcome element of density and almost makes the wholesome fibre palpable. With no artificial additives, colourings or preservatives, we may have just found our latest guilt-free, sweet treat.

If we’ve sufficiently whetted your appetite, why not give Tropical Wholefoods’ new snack bar range a try for yourself and let us know which is your favourite? 13

Easter Appeal

A time for reflection and new hope in Southern Senegal 2019 is a challenging year for the Traidcraft family. For Traidcraft Exchange, our income has been affected by the falling value of the pound and the changes the plc has been forced to make. To steward our resources more effectively, we’ve decided to send out only two appeals a year – one at Easter and one at Christmas. We hope this means that our dedicated supporters can plan their giving and continue to join our fight for trade justice. This year’s Easter appeal focuses on the new hope our West African based project is bringing to extremely poor communities in the post conflict region of Southern Senegal. Through fruit and friendship, your support could help change lives for vulnerable women and their families. If you’d like to receive a copy, or are keen to learn more about how you can support the appeal by sharing it in your community, do get in in touch at hello@traidcraft. org ! Take a sneak peak at the appeal here: www.traidcraft.org.uk/senegal

Exciting tea news! Last month, PG Tips – the UK’s most popular tea brand – became the fifth big tea brand to publish their supplier list in response to our ‘Who Picked My Tea?’ campaign. This is absolutely brilliant and it shows what we can achieve together. With five out of six big brands publishing, we are shifting the norm from secrecy to transparency – a vital step to address the appalling conditions on tea estates in Assam.

Now, we’ve just got one big brand left to convince: Typhoo. So, to ramp up the pressure, we’ve launched a new ‘Ty-Whoo picked my tea?’ action. Please join us by sending them a quick email or order our Ty-Whoo postcards – the perfect addition to your Big Brew! 21

New Product Launches Tropical Wholefoods

Why have we picked four bars?

We now have a Fairtrade and organic snack bar option back in stock, this time from Tropical Wholefoods. This is our first product launch where we have introduced a minimum order. For these bars, you will need to buy four or more bars; there will not be the option to buy one bar on its own (or two or three). You will be able to purchase between four and 24 bars. Ideally, we would like you to buy the whole case, meaning you’ll get a greater discount!

• You would get four or five bars in a multipack, so this is a suitable quantity.

• It needs to be commercially viable for Traidcraft to send out these products, it costs us the same to pick one bar as it does to pick one case that contains 24 bars.

Muscovado White Chocolate After many months, we finally have the Muscovado white chocolate in stock. We hope you enjoy munching this chocolate as much as we do at the Traidcraft office! This Organic, fair trade chocolate has a subtle sweetness and a hint of caramel from the Muscovado whole cane sugar. This exquisite flavour comes from the sugar used from Alter Trade Mascobado; for more information on the sugar, see here. With real cocoa butter, no emulsifiers (the chocolate is mixed for longer) and fair trade milk from Cooperative Milchwerke Berchtesgadener, this product is the best of the best. Traidcraft Fairtrade Organic Muscovado White Chocolate 28846 (100g) Single | 36330 (10x100g) Case Singles £2.65 OFFER £2.12 Cases £23.50 OFFER £18.80

Important Product Updates Cookies Shortbread fingers, Fairbreak Cookies, Fruit and Oat 45g and 180g packs should be available on Monday 4th March, Chocolate Cookies should be produced Tuesday 5th March and be available the next day. We apologise for this delay and we continue to work on the Stem Ginger Cookies to make as much of the ingredients as possible fair trade.

Clean and Fair

Penne Pasta

Tissue Range

We need to complete further testing to successfully re-formulate the cleaning range with a different FairPalm oil. We want to make sure we deliver the same excellent product as we have previously. We need to spend some time getting it right and are working closely with the manufacturers to deliver this.

We have been out of stock of pasta as we ran out of packaging and missed the next production slot. The Pasta will be back in stock early March, however in different branded packaging from Altromercato in Italy. The pasta is the same pasta.

We will be continuing with the Traidcraft toilet roll and kitchen roll. However, because of the very high minimum order to print the tissue boxes, the tissues will not be continuing. We still have stock coming in for spring but once they are gone, they are gone.
