Swazi Candles

Swazi Candles began in an old cowshed in 1981, when two South African art graduates got together to set up a candle-making business in eSwatini’s breath-taking mountainous countryside. The locals were full of enthusiasm, and eager to learn the art of candle-making.

This little workshop soon gained a reputation for producing one-of-a-kind candles, and started attracting visitors. The vibrancy of the workshop, uniqueness of the candles, and the skill of the artisans resulted in Swazi Candles becoming one of eSwatini’s foremost tourist attractions. Meet the Producer

This Christmas angel is handcrafted using sustainably-sourced capiz shell by artists at Saffy Handicrafts. Harvested from coastal waters in The Philippines, capiz is a flat, semi-transparent, shimmering shell with a pearlescent sheen. For centuries, the locals have earned their living from these shells, and to this day this material is a vital commodity for Filipino people.

An instant conversation-starter, these mouth-blown glasses are handmade with recycled glass by artisans at one of only 2 glass blowing factories left in Hebron, Palestine. The creation of Hebron glass dates back to the 14th century. This ancient glass-blowing tradition almost disappeared, but the glassworkers at Hebron Glass have revived it, using recycled glass to create glass that fuses together ancient and contemporary art.

How it ’s Made

These iron votives are cut with an raw-look edge and hand-punched with irregular little cut-out holes. The effect is of something natural, taken straight from a cave or forest. Artisans have painted the outer shell of one votive contemporary matt white, and the other a rustic silver. Both have gold leaf foil applied to the inside surface, which comes alive when a tealight is lit.

250g cooking apples, peeled and finely chopped 125g slivered almonds 125g suet

¼ tsp of nutmeg ¼ tsp allspice 250g dark brown soft sugar 250ml brandy, dark rum or apple juice (if preferred)

Grated zest of 1 lemon METHOD 1. Make sure all of the dried fruits are finely chopped to around the same size. 2. In a large bowl, mix the first nine ingredients together until well combined. It is easiest to do this with your hands. 3. Dissolve the sugar in the brandy, rum or apple juice and add to the mixture. Cover and leave in a cool place overnight. 4.
