We are very mindful of our heritage here at Traidcraft and being co-founders of the world fair trade movement could either mean a weight on our shoulders to uphold the original vision in all its glory, or a liberating sense of freedom to carry on breaking the normal rules of trade, whenever and wherever we can. We prefer the latter; guarding the flames, not tending the ashes.

WELCOME TO SUMMER 2020. For many of us, this will not quite be the summer we had in mind. The global pandemic is having an unprecedented impact on every aspect of normal life, but it has also brought about some amazing kindness, and has proved that the human spirit is by far the most powerful tool we all possess. The last few months have proved that even when we are apart, we can act together; I only hope as this journey progresses, the light continues to outweigh the dark. I’m regularly left astonished by the dedication and generosity I’m surrounded by, both at Traidcraft, and in everyday life. Our focus at Traidcraft HQ has been very much on spreading happiness and offering a distraction, for those who need it, with what we call our ‘positivity platform’. Those of you who have signed up to our weekly emails and monthly e-magazine (if you’re not already subscribed, you’re missing out!) will have had a taste of the positive vibes we’ve been sending out. You will have also seen our suggested range of activities to keep you busy during lockdown; ‘Garden Watch’ was a particular favourite of mine and I’ve also had our ‘Positivity Playlist’ on repeat whilst I’ve been working from home. Our fair trade recipes are also proving extremely popular, with the likes of our rainbow cake recipe amongst our most shared features of all time. I might just have to try the rainbow cake recipe myself! If you do make any of our recipes at home, please feel free to send us photos of your culinary masterpieces – we love a good foodie pic! Many of you may be wondering where the pandemic leaves the producers, the artisans and the supply chains we work with. Covid 19 has had a global affect which makes our work so much more important.

As well as remaining committed to our supply chains, we’ve also remained committed to you. Apart from planned maintenance (lasting a couple of hours), our site has always been open to take your orders, and deliveries have always arrived safely to your doorsteps. Did you know that the average price paid on the New York C coffee exchange for non-Organic coffee adds up to about 53p, for non-Organic, Fairtrade coffee, it’s 71p, When unfair trade was the accepted norm, we broke rules to challenge and change this. 40 years on, Fairtrade commodities line shelves of supermarkets up and down the country, but our work is far from done...

The ridiculously low commodity coffee price is currently driving hundreds of thousands of coffee farmers and their families into financial ruin and migration. Coffee plants are being cleared on a massive scale and replaced by cocoa cultivation or other crops. The consequence: the loss of the livelihood of these families. The coffee industry has not yet found any effective answers to this catastrophic development.

Swajan Crafts was launched in 1999 to promote Bangladeshi handicrafts and offer its women artisans a better quality of life. Swajan Crafts works with over 850 artisans specialising in traditional Bangladeshi craft techniques such as applique, paper craft, embroidery, and mirror work. The artisans learn from each other too, sharing their methods and ideas, meaning that quite often a single product might have had several different techniques applied to it. Much of the paper used is sourced from Prokritee, another inspiring fair trade organisation, who transform dried water hyacinth into handmade paper.

Based in Palestine, Holy Land Handicrafts are a WFTO-certified cooperative, representing 35 mother-of-pearl and olivewood craft workshops. Whilst preserving handicraft traditions for future generations, especially the olivewood tradition which was first developed because of the local availability of the raw material and the demand from pilgrims for religious icons, Holy Land Handicrafts aim to alleviate local poverty and unemployment, as well as decrease emigration. Currently, around 2,000 individuals benefit from the cooperative’s activities.

Cold Brew Coffee YOUR PERFECT SUMMER CAFFEINE HIT

We’ve all perfected how to make our favourite cup of hot coffee, but during the summer months, why not try something a little bit different for your morning caffeine hit?

Cold brew coffee uses time instead of heat to extract oils and caffeine from the ground coffee beans. This method gives you a smooth and less bitter taste, without losing any of the strength and flavour in the process. Not all beans lend themselves to cold brew coffee. Our Q Arabica Graded Coffee Expert recommends using a light roast coffee like Traidcraft’s Burundi Kayanza coffee beans or Eat Your Hat’s Uganda ground coffee, due to their fruitiness.

Coarsely grind coffee beans to roughly the same consistency of breadcrumbs (careful not to overgrind - too finely ground beans won’t have the same flavour or aesthetic). Place ground coffee into a large mason jar and add cold water (1:8 ratio of coffee to cold water). Stir until well combined and leave to steep overnight. (The brew can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge. The colder the temperature, the longer the mixture needs to brew). Strain into a large bowl using a sieve. Discard your leftover grounds – why not pop them into your compost bin? Tuck muslin or cheesecloth or coffee filter paper into cleaned sieve and strain back into jar. Repeat 2-3 times until there is no murky residue left at the bottom of the jar. Serve over ice and add milk or sugar for desired taste.

Simple Fair Trade Rice Pudding Recipe If you want a thick and creamy rice pudding, look no further than this simple fair trade recipe, which includes our thick Tropical Wholefoods rice from Myanmar. Mix with Ma’s Kitchen Coconut Milk, the first 100% Organic, Fairtrade and Great Taste award winning coconut milk.

Ingredients 300g Tropical Wholefoods rice 400ml Ma’s Happy Life coconut milk ¼ tsp salt

½ tsp vanilla extract 2 Tbsp raisins or another dried fruit (optional)

¼ tsp cinnamon

2-3 Tbsp maple syrup

¼ tsp ginger

1 tsp vegan butter

Method Heat a large pan on medium/high. Add all ingredients to pan. Stir continuously and bring to a boil. Turn heat to low and continue to simmer until most of the coconut milk has been absorbed. Add more liquid if you like a softer rice. Allow to cool before serving. traidcraftshop.co.uk

Healthy, Fair Trade, Mexican Pasta with Avocado Recipe Ingredients 100g Fairtrade penne or fusilli

Â˝ tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp Organic extra virgin olive oil

tomatoes

1 large onion, sliced 1 pepper, deseeded and sliced

400g can chopped 100g kidney beans 1 avocado, stone removed and sliced

2 garlic cloves, grated

Â˝ lime, zest and juice

2 tsp mild chilli powder

Handful of fresh

1 tsp ground coriander

coriander, chopped

Method Cook the penne or fusilli for 10-12 mins. Meanwhile, heat the extra virgin oil in a pan, and fry the sliced onion and pepper until golden. Stir the garlic and spices into the mixture, then tip in the canned tomatoes and kidney beans. Cover and simmer for 15 mins. Drain the al dente pasta and add into the sauce with the coriander. In a separate bowl, mix the sliced avocado with lime juice and zest. Spoon the pasta into bowls, top with the avocado and finish with scattered coriander leaves.
