PIONEERING THE FUTURE O F FA I R T R A D E
FA I R T R A D E Fair to people and the planet; we live and breathe fair trade, organic farming, recycling, repurposing and using sustainably-sourced natural materials every day. We were the first in the UK to do this, and this is why we’re the original fair trade pioneers. QUALITY We celebrate a world of authentic flavours, creativity, and culture; helping to save traditional skills and ancient growing practices from extinction. We prize perfect imperfections, fingerprints, and local expertise – all the little details that make our senses sing and our favourite treasures original.

WELCOME As the weather starts to get brighter and lighter, our thoughts are turning to sunny morning cups of tea in the garden, picnics on the beach and happy outdoor times with family and friends. We hope that our Spring / Summer ‘19 catalogue reflects this, whilst also reflecting a time of change at Traidcraft. Whether you’re tempted by our treats, or stocking up on essentials, you can enjoy

in the knowledge that each product that you purchase will have a positive impact, supporting people, and being mindful of the planet. As one coffee farmer told us, each year his co-operative is having to plant its coffee bushes further up the mountain to escape the infestations plaguing the lower ground due to increasingly warmer weather. At some point, he told us, you run out of mountain, and what does he do then? We believe that the key isn’t in buying, but in buying right – working with those who are striving to make a difference, and investing in what is good, rather than chasing what is cheap. It is because of this that everything in our collection is chosen with thought, care and consideration for the producers who have grown and nurtured their crops, and perfected their crafts, with skills that transcend generations. Our aim is to empower these people through trade, and share their stories with you. We invite you to shop with us with confidence, and to enjoy!

Sweet Like Honey
F R O M A P I C O O P, C H I L E
Honey brightens our breakfasts, sweetens our herbal teas and soothes our sore throats - but Traidcraft honey goes one step further. APICOOP strive to ensure a better quality of life for smallholders in the rural Valdivia region of southern Chile, who may have struggled to find work otherwise. The cooperative makes sure that its 350 beekeepers are given technical assistance, a marketing channel and fair prices for their honey. For example, they don’t need to have four people to carry each of their barrels of honey anymore – now they use their forklift truck! The beekeepers also have access to an agronomist, who advises them on avoiding and curing bee diseases. And let’s face it – keeping those bees happy and healthy is key to making delicious honey!

TRAIDCRAFT COFFEE
Traidcraft Coffee Traidcraft coffee is sourced through carefully selected socially and environmentally-minded fair trade organisations across Uganda, Peru, Honduras, Tanzania, Nicaragua, Ethiopia, Guatemala and Malawi. From PRODECOOP in Nicaragua to the Kagera Coop Union in Tanzania, we work with organisations who support and source their coffee from smallholder grower collectives. These groups support their member coffee growers with training opportunities, education about environmental practices, diverse social projects, and of course - a stable and fair income.

We work with organic and fair trade producers in Ghana and Ecuador to grow this commodity sustainably, in a way that supports smallholder growers, and allows the palm plants to grow naturally, without destroying the environment. The proceeds of fair trade in these areas has helped to transform the community with investments in healthcare, infrastructure and provision of clean water. Traidcraft introduced the first fair trade chocolate to the UK in 1991, through a collaboration with likeminded individuals across Europe. This collaboration worked with established grower organisations (including sugar and cocoa cooperatives), to develop the first fair trade chocolate bar, known as Mascao. Today, we still stay true to the early values of Mascao – speaking up for new or emerging small scale producers, and finding new fair trade ingredients to mix into chocolate bars. And all of this while still working with some of the original fair trade cocoa and sugar growers the team started their journey alongside!

El Ceibo, in Bolivia was of the very first fair trade suppliers of cocoa used in Traidcraft’s first chocolate bars. They were founded in 1977 and represents almost 50 small cooperatives of cocoa producers. El Ciebo has thrived through fair trade and managed to add value to their cocoa beans through processing themselves rather than selling to bigger traders.

Starting its life in Uganda in the early 1990s, Tropical Wholefoods began helping local farmers sell their fruits at good prices in European markets. They pay fair prices in advance, develop and market the farmers’ products and share useful technology and experience with overseas partners. With the help of Tropical Wholefoods, these farmers now solar dry their fruit, as this adds value, extends shelf life, makes fruit more transportable, retains waste at the source and uses only renewable energy. It also means that fruits are even more tasty for you to enjoy, as they are dried when fresh and ripe!

Kilombero Rice
SMALLHOLDER GROWN P R E M I U M A R O M AT I C R I C E F R O M THE WARM HEART OF AFRICA Kilombero rice is farmed using traditional cultivation methods which protect the environment and have sustained communities across Malawi for centuries.
This delicious, traditionally cultivated Kilombero rice is harvested in Malawi by smallholder farmers who are part of NASFAM (National Smallholder Farmers’ Association of Malawi), a democratically governed organisation owned by its members — 60% of whom are women. Income generated from this premium fair trade rice means that these farming communities can invest in their businesses, educate their families, and plan for the future. A Malawian farmer must sell 90kg of rice to enable them to send a child to secondary school for a year – something to think about as you boil your next pan of rice!

“Fairtrade has had a big impact on my life in all sorts of ways. First of all, I started receiving higher prices, and that made a huge difference to our family’s farming income, about 20,000 shekels (£3,400) difference per year. I stopped worrying about searching for local traders that would take my olive oil with conditions and at low prices. Now it all goes to one buyer and we get paid during the harvest instead of waiting months to sell all our produce. We are now our own masters.”

GLASSWARE
CRISIL Crisil is a family-run social enterprise based in Cochabamba, Bolivia. It was set up in 1991 by two brothers, Carlos and Walter Bustos, who wanted to create beautiful glassware in a way that was in balance with the environment. There are 90 artisan glassworkers at Crisil, but support from Crisil reaches much further, touching the lives of over 500 families in the region. All glassworkers are given up to date training, accident insurance, and ongoing learning opportunities to develop their craft skills. The workshops are places of collaboration, where glassworkers regardless of class or gender can produce works of art together. All of the pieces produced by Crisil are made from recycled glass. The raw glass is collection from recycling centres by members of the enterprise. The glass is broken into tiny pieces, washed in clean water, and then melted in the natural gas furnace. The artisans are always sure to use as little water as possible during this step. The glass becomes a stretchy, viscose mass, which is mouthblown and shaped into cups, jugs, ornaments, and all manner of innovative glass pieces.
All Crisil glassware is made from recycled glass and is dishwasher safe

Healthy Soil
STORIES
How often do you have a conversation with someone and come away with your entire understanding having been changed without you even realising it? Robin Roth visited Delhi and Darjeeling and shares his experiences on the importance of healthy soil.
DELHI I had been working in Fairtrade for 5 years and was managing Europe’s single biggest Fairtrade company, and I really thought I understood just how critical Fairtrade was to farmers. I was convinced that without it, farmers really didn’t have much of a chance at all. It was around then that I was lucky enough to meet Vandana Shiva, who runs a small model farm, North of Delhi. On the farm she encourages farmers to take seeds from her seed bank, use them for free, sell the crop and return a certain percentage for storage and use the following year. The aim of this process is seed diversity, which prevents large companies from decoding the genetic sequence of a seed, registering it and patenting it (thereby enabling them to charge farmers to use it). When I met Vandana Shiva for the first time she seemed kindly, thoughtful and sincere. I did not, at the time, know that she was an alternate Nobel prize winner, a serial litigator against, (and frequent vanquisher of) Monsanto, a public crusader against corporate malpractice and the adored defender of small farmer rights all across India. In comparison to her, I didn’t really know anything. She wanted to sell me GMO free rice and we were happy to buy, but afterwards, on a shared taxi journey to a conference where she was going to speak, I asked her, by way of conversation; 48
traidcraftshop.co.uk
“What is the most important thing for a small farmer – the thing he or she needs more than anything else to ensure survival.” “Healthy soil.” She replied quietly and looked out of the window. “What about a secure income – or a good price for the crop – surely that’s more important?” “Healthy soil.” “And then?” “A contented wife.” “Seriously? Don’t you get that with a secure income?” “And next,” she carried on, quite unperturbed, “healthy children.”
She carried on and eventually she got to Fairtrade. It was about 8th or 9th on the list, and, I suspect a kindness to me, as I had just agreed to buy 3 containers of her rice at good Fairtrade prices.
DARJEELING It has taken me years to unravel what Vandana said, and more importantly, what she meant. Healthy soil is the basis of all farming, of all growth, of all trade, of all nourishment and of all economic security. If the soil has gone, there isn’t a crop to sell.
STORIES
I remember standing in the foothills of the Himalayas in Darjeeling. I was on an organic tea farm and the valley I was in was lush and green, with plenty of tree cover, and the endless lines of tea bushes were broken up by patches of woodland and forest. The (non-organic) estate straight ahead on the other side of the valley was stripped bare, dirty brown and there were small rock falls – avalanches you might call them - where the earth had just slid off the rock taking whole fields with them. It was disturbing to look at, but most fascinating was the view down the valley to the enormous plains below. We must have been at 4,000 feet, so we could see some 50 miles or so. The plain below was a dust bowl – completely stripped of all vegetation – apart from directly below us. The waters that passed through the organic tea estate that I was in carried no pesticides with them, and as a result, a stretch of green flowed out down to the plain below directly beneath us. There were healthy trees to begin with, subsiding to scrub, and then grass. Eventually it all deteriorated into the dead plain as the clean water drained away. I will never forget that sight.
SRI LANKA One day in Sri Lanka, another Fairtrade pioneer I have come to be greatly inspired by scooped up a handful of living, breathing sweet smelling earth and said to me. “There are more living organisms in this handful of earth than there are stars in the universe. If you spray this with pesticide you will kill nearly of them. Then you don’t have soil anymore. You have dust.” He showed me a neighbouring farm where they did indeed use pesticides. The crops were fantastically green, pumped full of nitrogen, and the earth was bone hard. To get a handful of it would have required a mini pack of explosives and the result would have been a cloud of dust driven away by the wind. So what is “healthy soil?” Well, even now, a scientist can’t tell you exactly what lives in this amazing micro-universe, nor will they be able to explain how this community of organisms co-exist, or what they all bring to the party, but they do know that it takes about 2,000 years of natural weather conditions to grow just 10cm of natural soil.
Every time a farmer turns the soil on their land and “dust” flies up into the air, we say good bye to another few decades of nature’s work. Soil degradation is not just about killing it, it’s about seeing it blown away. Eventually, as now visible in Ohio, the corn basket of the USA, the ground is – literally – getting lower each year. It has taken me years to understand what Vandana said - and I am not a farmer - but I have seen severely degraded soil. It has become clear to me that if soil is not looked after, crops, and the farming of them will not be sustainable for long, Fairtrade price or not. I have also seen simple communities of forest farmers living on just half an acre of land each, but living with such abundance of food that it felt almost Panglossian.
UK & EUROPE If we are serious about Fairtrade, we need to be serious about the farmers who grow our food. In Europe we have consistently understood Fairtrade through our own eyes and our own understanding: we are doing some “good” to those in need. Many farmers would be insulted by this. Fairtrade in Britain is all about conscious choices: spending a bit more money to help farmers who are committed to nourishing the earth is the beginning of an extraordinary journey. Over the coming months we want to share more of this journey with you. Robin Roth traidcraftshop.co.uk

Two shoes, three meals, & the chance of a brighter future. We believe every child should have these things.
Before we formed the association, I couldn’t afford shoes for the children. They used to demand from their father “can we have shoes?” and we had to say no. Now I can say yes, and they all have shoes which protect their feet on the way to school . With your support, Ndella could earn more from the work she does selling forest fruits in rural Senegal. With her increased wages, she could support her children and save for a better, more secure future. That’s the power of transforming trade. Donate to our Easter appeal and help more people like Ndella and her community to get a fair deal from the hard work they do every day.
