DEAR FRIENDS, Welcome to our spring catalogue. We very much hope that you are inspired by what you find in these pages and that you are encouraged to choose things you need in a way that honours the skills and hard work of those who produce and grow on our behalf. Fairtrade is defined as “a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers – especially in the (global) South.” I am inspired by this. It captures so much more than just the idea of a “fair price” which is what most people assume Fairtrade boils down to. I love words like “equity”, “sustainable development”, “securing the rights” and I love that it seeks to tie all these visionary aims with three principles: dialogue, transparency and respect. As members (and co-founders) of WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation), we are required to show evidence of all three principles in the way we deal with our trading partners. Often forgotten are you, the consumers. And yet you are the most important trading partners in the whole chain: without your willingness to seek fairly and ethically traded goods, none of the visionary things we are all trying to achieve would be possible. This year we are focusing on treating our customers with the same respect that we have always tried to maintain when dealing with producers. If you want to know more about what we do, we love sharing our dreams and ideas. Please sign up to our monthly e-newsletter, the Traidcraft Bulletin. It’s a wonderful read and is part of our open dialogue. If you want to experience real transparency – the sort that’s a bit scary really – have a look at page 7 where we talk openly about the prices we pay producers. This could be seen as radical and revolutionary, however, it’s simply real, pure, stripped back fair trade, as it was intended to be. How many companies would treat you the same way? Swajan Crafts was launched in 1999 to promote Bangladeshi handicrafts and offer its women artisans a better quality of life. Swajan Crafts works with over 850 artisans specialising in traditional Bangladeshi craft techniques such as applique, paper craft, embroidery, and mirror work. The artisans learn from each other too, sharing their methods and ideas, meaning that quite often a single product might have had several different techniques applied to it. Much of the paper used is sourced from Prokritee, another inspiring fair trade organisation, who transform dried water hyacinth into handmade paper.
