T R A I D C R A F T S H O P. C O . U K 3

Whilst still pioneering the future of fair trade, we have the following three themes very much at the heart of every decision we make. TRADE JUSTICE: We are painfully aware that 40 years of fair trade has not done enough to counter the incredible power imbalances in international trade. We are passionate about economic justice and believe that transparency is key in achieving this.

RULE BREAKERS When unfair trade was the accepted norm, we broke rules to change this. Over 40 years on, Fairtrade commodities line shelves of supermarkets up and down the country, but our work is far from done... Join us, let’s break some rules together.

SOCIAL JUSTICE: We are actively, noisily passionate about equality: gender, religion, opportunity, regardless of background, heritage, experience or inheritance. ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE: We are increasingly concerned and worried about the killer effects climate change is having on our partners. We will bring people’s attention to the crisis which will be created if we overstep the UN’s ambition to pursue a limit to global warming of 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels.

FIGHT FOR YOUR FUTURE We advocate less consumption. We believe buying less is buying right; investing in what is good, rather than chasing what is cheap.

TEAM TRAIDCRAFT We put transparency, respect and dialogue into commercial practice. Our culture and Holacratic structure is part of our response.

Welcome TO SPRING 2021

After a whirlwind 2020, what a blessing it is that we are still here, able to fight the injustices we see in society, and that’s all down to you. Thank you. Thank you for choosing to invest your money in future-proof, fair trade goods from Traidcraft. From the producers and artisans you are supporting, to the environment you are helping to restore, your purchases from Traidcraft are so much more than just store cupboard and homeware essentials; they are your chance to leave your fingerprints on the world you want to see. In return, we want to give you the privilege of being able to change the world, simply through the choices you make; your pennies and pounds are more powerful than you think. Whether you decide to opt for Organic coffee to wake you up in the morning, add sustainable fabrics to your capsule wardrobe or gift a Fairtrade Easter egg this year, every single purchase

you make from Traidcraft is an investment into our planet and the 7.5 billion people who call it home. We want Traidcraft to be a premium, ethical business, setting the bar high when it comes to honesty and integrity. Transparency is at the heart of what we do; it is part of our mission, part of our DNA. You’ll see on page 46 that we’ve gone 100% transparent on our Traidcraft-branded food, drink and household items. Good or bad, we are showing you the true costs of our products, from how much we pay for ingredients, to exactly how much profit we make on each product. We hope you value our honesty, and that sharing this information gives you an insight into our world. Have a peaceful spring, Team Traidcraft

There are lots of organisations throughout the world whose philosophy, mission and values are aligned with our own. We call ourselves Fair Trade Organisations (FTOs) and often work together. We are a member of two larger membership organisations: The World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO), which is a larger global membership body of FTOs and importantly includes membership in the global South - in other words, producers from Africa, Central and Latin America and Asia who are seeking to benefit from fair trade.

FREE DELIVERY ON ALL ORDERS OVER £50* We are very mindful of our heritage here at Traidcraft and being co-founders of the world fair trade movement could either mean a weight on our shoulders to uphold the original vision in all its glory, or a liberating sense of freedom to carry on breaking the normal rules of trade, whenever and wherever we can. We prefer the latter; guarding the flames, not tending the ashes. 4

Traidcraft is a Christian response to poverty. It was founded in 1979 by a group of Christians who wanted to challenge the deep injustices embedded in global trade. We want to remain true to our origins. We do not want to stop until trade is conducted fairly for the benefit of all who participate in the supply chain. We welcome everyone to join in our endeavour of making trade fair. We work with supporters of all faiths and none, and we work with farmers and artisans whatever their creed, ethnicity or religion. We believe that justice transcends ideology and individual beliefs.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE:

TRAIDCRAFT’S COMMITMENT TO THE PLANET The environment’s needs are at the heart of every decision we make; from the ever-expanding range of Organic and sustainable products we offer, to the eco-credentials of the suppliers, couriers, printers and photographers we choose to work with. Here’s a little insight into our fight for environmental justice.

OUR ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRODUCT RANGE We pride ourselves on providing a carefully curated selection of fair trade, ethical goods, each season. From the fair trade food and drink we offer, to handmade crafts and slow, sustainable fashion, everything in our collection has been selected with the environment in mind. When it comes to our own-branded food/drink, we consider the ecocredentials of every single element throughout the supply chain; from the ingredients we use and how they’re grown, to the production method utilised in the product’s making. When it comes to the crafts and fashion we source through third party suppliers, we think long and hard about their ethos, sustainability, stance on the environment, materials used (such as TENCEL™ and SeaCell™) and production methods implemented, 8

traidcraftshop.co.uk

as well as things like their impact on people and planet, and whether they’re organic, recyclable or recycled. These are decisions we don’t take lightly. Many of you will be thinking, doesn’t it seem counter-intuitive to an ecoconscious company to fly fairly traded goods to the UK from all over the world? You’d be right to question us. In fact, unless extremely delayed, all of our products arrive by boat.

WHO WE WORK WITH Catalogues Our seasonal catalogues: Are plastic-free Are recyclable Are made from woodfree, silk paper Use vegetable and water-based inks, with no solvents throughout the printing process FULFILLING YOUR ORDERS   One significant step on our journey to becoming the ultimate ecobusiness is how we package your orders. We recently switched to both paper tape and paper void fill when packaging your fair trade goods for dispatch. This eco-switch means: In 2019, we used a total of 186 rolls of air film (which makes the recyclable air-filled pillows to protect your orders in transit). A switch to paper void fill reduced our plastic packaging material by 1.488 tonnes and a CO2 output reduction of 0.18 tonnes. I n 2019, we used 3,024 rolls of plastic tape to seal your orders. The switch to paper tape means that we will save 0.992 tonnes of plastic material reduction and a CO2 output reduction of 0.72 tonnes. We also use compostable bags to package liquids. Many seemingly small switches like this make up the bigger picture, helping to make a huge difference to the environment. We know we aren’t 100% there yet, but every small change we make gets us one step closer to our dream of one day becoming carbon neutral.

Are printed in an efficient factory which is powered by solar panels and uses intelligent heating/lighting to minimise carbon output Photography For our product photoshoots, we use family-run, local photographers, CTP Creative Imaging, who are located in Northumberland. Apart from regularly running completely off-grid (thanks to 10 kilowatt solar panels on the studio roof), CTP Creative Imaging used their time during lockdown to plant a small orchard of apple trees in their grounds, to help offset their carbon footprint. Couriers For any of your orders which exceed 2kg, DPD are our courier of choice. Apart from their flexible, user-friendly service for both shippers and shoppers, we choose to work with DPD as their green policies are very much aligned with our own. If you’re interested to find out more about DPD’s journey and how they aim to be the UK’s leader in sustainable delivery, head over to our blog for information on DPD’s electric vehicle fleet, waste management, solar power and much more. traidcraftshop.co.uk

OUR VISION: WHAT WE ARE WORKING TOWARDS We want to make capitalism fair. What do we mean by that? We recognise the huge injustices in trade, the environment and society, which we are willing to fight to eradicate. We are not in business to make people rich and businesses richer; we want those throughout our supply chains to get the money they need not just to live, but to thrive. By building us and those around us to the most ethical that we can be, we stand a chance of achieving our goal.

We know our vision is vast, and fraught with obstacles, but we won’t stop until it’s achieved. Here is how we propose we’re going to achieve it:

We are here

Build a premium ethical business Acquire like-minded, ethical businesses Build a conglomerate of ethical businesses Make capitalism fair Tell everyone Fair trade isn’t just part of our business, it’s fundamental to our business. And we’re 100% committed to it. Amazing work has been done, but we need to push the boundaries of fair further and keep raising standards for everyone; over 40 years on from our conception, Fairtradecertified products line supermarket shelves up and down the country. We want you to know that fair trade, in its purest form, goes far beyond compliance to a set of standards.

10 traidcraftshop.co.uk

WHY BUY OUR PRODUCTS:

HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT? We are on a mission to create real, sustainable change in the word of trade. In the process, we just happen to sell the very best tea, coffee, chocolate, sugar, sweets and biscuits around.

We believe that the key to buying less, is buying right… investing in what is good, rather than chasing what is cheap. Our vision is to be the best ethical business there is.

HOW ARE WE HOPING TO ACHIEVE THIS? Well, our Traidcraft-branded products are a start…

We always go further than just fair. You can rely on us to make the right, most ethical decision, for people and planet. Every time.

We believe that consuming ethically shouldn’t mean compromising on quality; our range is carefully and expertly curated.

We only have one planet, so we’re making sure that we look after it; from how our food and drink is wrapped and packaged, to where it comes from.

We choose who we work with very carefully, we want to work with those who are honourable, truthful and passionate, and those who believe in our vision.

We believe Fairtrade-certification just isn’t enough anymore, and that being organic really does matter. traidcraftshop.co.uk 11

PALM OIL IS GOOD

Debunking the Myth WHY IS REGULAR PALM OIL BAD? To make way for palm oil plantations, huge areas of rainforest are either burned to the ground or taken down by machinery. In Indonesia alone, an area the size of two football pitches is lost every minute. Palm oil production plays one of the biggest parts in the world’s 20 traidcraftshop.co.uk

deforestation, and as a result, the natural habitats of many wonderful and endangered wildlife species are destroyed. Worse still, some animals are brutally killed and removed from their homes. Additionally, forest fires which have been started to clear land for oil palm, release high levels of carbon dioxide and black carbon into the atmosphere, which is a huge contributing factor in climate change.

We should not avoid palm oil all together. In fact, palm oil is a very efficient crop, with less pesticides and fertilisers needing to be used, as well as less land required to grow it, in comparison to similar crops like soybean or coconut oil.

What we need to do is focus on using palm oil responsibly, and by this, we mean only buying products where the palm oil has been sourced sustainably.

INTRODUCING FAIRPALM: THE WORLD’S ONLY, FAIR TRADE, ORGANIC PALM OIL

Through working with Serendipalm, as well as Natural Habitats in Ecuador, Traidcraft has developed FairPalm – the world’s only fair trade, organic palm oil, that protects the environment while supporting smallholder growers. The FairPalm label guarantees that the process of creating the oil involves fair pay, completely organic methods of farming to allow crops to grow at their own pace, makes direct links between smallholders and consumers, as well as focusing on high environmental standards. traidcraftshop.co.uk 21

FOOD & DRINK

WHAT CAN WE DO?

It is also important to remember that the production of palm oil has provided jobs for millions of small farmers, helping them to work with dignity, earn more money and provide a better life for themselves and their families. Plus, avoiding palm oil all together could have worse effects in that it might take support away from companies who are working their hardest to improve the situation.

NAMED MOST ETHICAL RICE BY ETHICAL CONSUMER!

This Fairtrade rice comes from a small producer group in Moe Goke, Myanmar (formally Burma). As well as receiving the Fairtrade minimum price ($381 per tonne, compared to the domestic price of $240 per tonne), the farmers receive a Fairtrade premium of around $2000. They chose to invest this in their revolving loan fund to support future investment in high quality rice seed.

WE ARE TRANSPARENT

we're baring all As you know, almost everything we know today as fair trade began with Traidcraft. Four decades on, we’re pioneering the start of a new movement; a 100% transparent movement.

We’ve set the bar high. We hope other companies will join us in our fight against injustices in the conventional trade system. Transparency is a giant leap towards making capitalism fair.

As part of our anti-Black Friday activities at the back end of 2020, we decided to publish this level of transparent information for ALL of our Traidcraft-branded products – making this a world first, 100% transparent range. Something we’re really rather proud of. With this information available at your fingertips, you’ll discover the true costs of the products you love and actually how little (rightly or wrongly) of that cost goes towards the ingredients in our products.

Last summer, we sold the Easter egg artwork that we designed for €660. Instead of keeping this payment for our own profit, we decided we wanted to do something more meaningful with it. We know that coronavirus stopped every one of us in our tracks, putting our lives on pause, but as with everything, we were not all affected equally. Honduras at the best of times feels in many ways neglected, with inadequate water and electricity supplies, poor infrastructure, as well as schooling for children not always guaranteed. According to the Global Health Security Index, hardly any other country in Latin America was as poorly prepared for a pandemic as Honduras. Lockdown made life unmanageably difficult; there were periods of time where food simply couldn’t get there and when it did, in some cases, the prices tripled.

So, using the money we made from the Easter egg artwork, we teamed up with Roasters United to support the coffee farmers of the COMBRIFOL cooperative (Cooperativa Mixta Regional Brisas de la Frontera Limitada), prioritising those with the greatest needs, such as single mothers and their children. Firstly, food packages and seeds were provided to alleviate the immediate distress. After this, the project will focus on aiding the community long term and ensuring that they can look after themselves, not just to survive, but to thrive; a cooperative nursery is being set up to raise seedlings, intended to enable the cultivation of food for personal consumption and to obtain seeds in order to secure the availability of fruit and vegetables in the future.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO COFFEE FARMERS IN HONDURAS

SUPPORTING COFFEE FARMERS THROUGH THE CORONA CRISIS Cafédirect, a long-time supplier of 100% Fairtrade coffee, tea and cocoa to Traidcraft has stepped up to support its coffee partners to mitigate the effects of Covid 19. Image: Fairtrade/Christoph Köstlin

Cafédirect purchases 100% Fairtrade coffee, tea and cocoa. As well as paying the minimum Fairtrade Price of $1,40 per lb, they also pay an additional $0.20 Fairtrade premium. From the start of the Coronavirus pandemic, this premium has facilitated direct payments to producer communities to buy personal protective equipment and hand sanitising stations, which practically prevents transmission of the virus. Cafédirect also invests its profits into a grower-led charity, Producers Direct, which was established in 2009. Producers Direct, alongside other partners, recognised the need to provide clear and accessible information to support producers during the coronavirus pandemic. Claire Rhodes, CEO of Producers Direct, commented that: “There is a serious and significant risk that Covid-19 will cause major food shortages and long-term supply chain sustainability issues. It is absolutely critical that we support the livelihoods of smallholder producers in Africa and 52 traidcraftshop.co.uk

Latin America. Smallholder producers are currently experiencing exacerbated Covid-19 related challenges, which are severely reducing their income and productivity, as well as increasing the risk of hunger and malnutrition.” In partnership with Producers Direct, We Farm, Ideo.Org and Mercy Corps Agrifin; Cafédirect hosted a webinar in July 2020 to promote the sharing of health-related information to help growers understand how best to protect themselves from Covid. They had producer partners on the call from Peru, as well as customers including Traidcraft. This has resulted in these partners also sharing this open-source material, with a reach of over 4.5 million farmers across the Producers Direct network in Latin America and East Africa. Cafédirect will continue working together to support coffee growers and other producers during this challenging time. For more information please go to producersdirect.org/covid

So much love and care has gone into every bar – the cocoa based ingredients are blended together for hours (a process called ‘conching') to create the smoothest and most impressive melt-in-your-mouth experience. You'll never find any emulsifiers, cheap oils, or artificial colours or preservatives in this chocolate. Put simply – it's the most wholesome chocolate you'll find. 64 traidcraftshop.co.uk

Recipe supplied by Traidcraft’s Lizy WHAT YOU'LL NEED

• 150g unsalted butter, melted, plus extra to grease • 400g Traidcraft Organic Muscovado White Chocolate, broken into pieces • 300g full fat cream cheese • 250g mascarpone • 300ml double cream • 1 x single shot of Baileys (if desired) • 200g raspberries • 50g Traidcraft Organic Milk Chocolate (grated)

DID YOU KNOW? Our Double Chocolate Chunk Cookies are Vegan Society approved

HOW TO MAKE Crush double chocolate chunk cookies in a food processor until completely ground. Add butter and blitz again until you have the desired crumbly consistency. Grease and line the base of a 23cm deep, loosebottomed cake tin. Add the biscuit mixture to the cake tin and pat it flat. Leave to set in the fridge for approximately half an hour. Melt 350g of the muscovado chocolate in a heatproof glass bowl over a small pan of hot water on a low heat. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Remove from the heat and leave to cool for 10 mins until barely warm, but still liquid. Whisk the cream cheese, mascarpone, melted muscovado chocolate and remainder of the chocolate (50g - grated) – as well as the shot of Baileys if you wish! Add double cream and keep whisking until the mixture is just holding its own shape. Whisk until just combined. Spoon the mixture over the cooled and set biscuit base, then smooth the top. Return to the fridge to cool for at least six hours, until the topping is set. Finally, decorate with fruit and finish with a light dusting of grated milk chocolate. traidcraftshop.co.uk 71

Back in 2014, environmental entrepreneur, Evan Lewis, purchased a run-down, ageing facility which made pencils from recycled CD cases. After a year and a half of making improvements to this facility, Evan and his team were producing an additional million pencils per year. At the same time, there was a string of devastating natural and man-made disasters affecting children worldwide, their educations in particular.

“Pencils are the most iconic educational tool going back centuries and I wanted to do something with them, something inspirational.” Evan Lewis Founder of VENT for Change.

It was at this moment, Evan had his lightbulb moment – realising he had a potential one million spare pencils being produced each year. The sale of these pencils could go towards rebuilding schools, paying teachers and providing essential materials. Evan decided to sell his pencils and other stationery here in the UK, and from the proceeds, support existing education projects around the world, ensuring that children’s futures are brighter, and that they receive the education they deserve. Evan also launched Share a Pencil Day, a global education awareness day for UK school children. His Ambassador for Change programme provides free pencils to charities and volunteers working overseas, which means that pencils reach those who need them most, completely free of charge.

Three Pack Recycled Clementine Pencils 10321 £3.99 Cleverly made from recycled CD cases which could have otherwise ended up in landfill, these pencils may be small, but they are a giant leap into a sustainable lifestyle.

ORGANIC COTTON and why we love it Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic, persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. This means that your beautiful wardrobe pieces are not only soft on your skin, but gentle on the earth and kind to people, too.

IMPACT ON PEOPLE Farmers and their families are kept safer when growing Organically as they are not exposed to toxic chemicals in their fields, food or water supply. It also means farmers grow more than one crop which supplements their food and income.

IMPACT ON PLANET The process of growing Organic cotton doesn’t damage the soil, in fact, it replenishes and maintains soil fertility. It also has less impact on the air, uses 88% less water and 62% less energy to produce. Organic cotton is predominantly rain-fed, which reduces pressure on local water sources. 86 traidcraftshop.co.uk

SEACELL (TM)

So, what's all the fuss about?

WHAT ON EARTH IS SEACELL™? What if we told you that the components which make up your favourite items of clothing didn’t have to involve farming or animals? What if they came from an abundant, sustainable resource, like seaweed? Yep, you read that right… seaweed. Welcome the innovative and progressive new fabric, SeaCell™. SeaCell™ is made from a brown algae called ascophyllum nodossum, also known as Knotted Wrack, which grows in the Icelandic Fjords.

HOW IS SEACELL™ MADE? Through a solvent-spinning process, cellulose is dissolved and mixed with washed and filtered seaweed, to create a sturdy yarn. This process locks in the beneficial properties of seaweed.

88 traidcraftshop.co.uk

See page 93 for Thought Madelyn Patterned Slacks

WHY IS SEACELL (TM) SO GOOD? • It contains antioxidants that react with free radicals in the skin to neutralise them, thus slowing down ageing and reducing skin damage by the environment. • Nutrients from the seaweed are retained in the fibre, including iron, calcium, magnesium and Vitamin E. The structure of the fabric promotes the transfer of these nutrients when the skin comes in contact with the fabric. • The fabric absorbs bodily moisture faster than cotton. • It’s wearable, breathable, absorbent, lightweight and soft.

• Seaweed for use in SeaCell™ is collected by Smartfiber AG (using a special machine with blades that do not cause any permanent damage). They harvest a batch of seaweed once every four years and cut it only above the regenerative part of the plant. This ensures that the seaweed isn't permanently damaged. Cutting the upper portion of the plant in this manner encourages the plant to sprout more. • Seaweed in SeaCell™ is dried naturally and not subject to any chemical treatment, ensuring that the natural components of the plant are retained.

FA S H I O N

• The end product is 100% biodegradable.

CRISIL

GLASSWARE

Crisil is a family-run social enterprise based in Cochabamba, Bolivia, who create timeless glassware made from 100% recycled glass, washed and processed in eco-friendly conditions. Their mission has always had the needs of people and planet at its core. Crisil utilises traditional methods of production; during the glass making process, previously used glass is broken into tiny pieces, washed in clean water and then melted in a natural gas furnace. In order to preserve natural resources and minimize waste, artisans use as little water as possible throughout the production. The glass becomes a stretchy, viscose mass, which is mouthblown (a skill which takes years to perfect) and shaped into all manner of innovative glass pieces. Crisil employs 90 artisan glassworkers in total, but support reaches much further, touching

The workshops are places of collaboration, where glassworkers, regardless of class, place of origin or gender, can produce works of art together. This makes for a completely diverse workforce, with people from many different social groups and ethnic backgrounds coming together to share their skills.

month course is taught in Chichewa so that it’s accessible to women who have not been able to attend school. They also teach a one-year diploma course which not only passes on sewing skills but helps to build literacy and prepares women for the world of work. traidcraftshop.co.uk 121

Q: Have you always lived in Malawi? A: Yes, I have travelled to Kenya, Zambia, the USA and South Africa, all or either Church funded or Aids Clinical Trial Group work. Q: What’s the best thing about Malawi? A: I’ve never seen war, it’s a peaceful country, the people are warm and friendlywe do call it “The Warm Heart of Africa” Q: And what’s the most difficult thing?

Cycle of Good's Mary Kamwendo

Meet Manager of Cycle of Good, Mary Kamwendo. Cycle of Good would not exist without this incredible, strong woman. She has championed the rights of women and girls throughout her life; Mary truly understands the impact of providing education and training to women in order to achieve long lasting positive change in a development area. We asked Mary to give us a little insight into her life and the impact that Cycle of Good has had on the community. Q: Mary, tell us a little about yourself and where you were born. A: I was born 66 years ago, in Zomba which is a town in the middle of Malawi, it’s very beautiful with a high plateau and lovely scenery. I’ve never seen war, it’s a peaceful country, the people are warm and friendly - we do call it “The Warm Heart of Africa” 122 traidcraftshop.co.uk

A: The gap between the rich and poor; mostly the poverty. In Chilomoni Township, poverty is different to the rural areas. In the countryside, people have extended families who will always help. Here in the township it’s graver, people can go for days without food, there’s no extended family and people do not feel an obligation or empathy. Q: So why do people live in the township instead of their home villages? A: Just like any other country, it’s urbanisation. People think living in town is the best, they want the smart clothes and life, but it’s not like that, there are no jobs. Q: Cycle of Good is part of the Beehive hub of social enterprise. How did you first get involved, what was your role? A: I am proud to have worked with Beehive from the beginning. At the start I was the “Community 1st Responder” I made sure the funders knew what the community wanted, people came to me to state their needs and I was the bridge to the project. Then I helped to start the tailoring school. Later I became the HR Manager for the whole organisation. I also managed all the

Q: And what impact have you seen from the beginning of Cycle of Good? A: A big impact! The ladies working here, some have husbands who also work, so they would be ok. But our culture is to work hard to support the whole extended family and that’s what working here means to them. They can pay school fees for children, buy food and clothes. The tailors, they enjoy working here; they didn’t just want work, they wanted equality and a say in their work, they get that here. I’ve tried to be a supportive manager, encouraged the team to love and respect one another so that they help each other to achieve good quality, we are proud of what we do.

Q: Where do you see Cycle of Good in five years’ time? A: In five years’ time, Cycle of Good will employ over 200 people! Q: What do the tailors think of the recycling element of the project? Is that meaningful here in Malawi? A: To be honest, that’s a little lost on them. It’s not something we think about in Malawi because here everything is used to death. If you have an inner tube, it is used until it is scraps and cannot be used anymore. Q: Do the people you know like the products we make? A: No! They want shiny, smart, British goods, not something made out of rubbish! Q: I think we’ve found a culture gap! Do you like the things we make? What is your own favourite product? A: Yes, I like the products, especially that waste is bringing money into people’s lives. My favourite is the lunch bag, I think it’s so smart and I could use one!

Bio-D have always used minimal, recyclable packaging. However, recently they’ve gone one step further and introduced containers made from 100% recycled material across their range. The recycled material is made from used plastic bottles that could otherwise have ended in landfill. This means that the Bio-D containers often have a slightly non-uniform shade, that changes depending on the make-up of different recycled plastics that have gone into the mix – a quirk that we love.

Where in the World?

Traidcraft has established meaningful relationships with producers and suppliers from all around the world, some of which we’ve been working with since the very beginning, over 40 years ago! We’ve also formed relationships with new suppliers and producers over the years, bringing an ever-increasing range of products to homes around the UK. This is a list of the fair trade suppliers we’ve collaborated with to curate our Spring 2021 range of handcrafted masterpieces, sustainable fashion and incredible, fair trade edibles. BOLIVIA ANAPQUI Established in 1983, Anapqui is dedicated to improving the living conditions of rural farmers in Bolivia and promoting organic agriculture. You can find their quinoa in our pasta. COINACAPA This cooperative collects the Brazil nuts that fall from Amazonian rainforest trees. More than 1000 families benefit from exporting Brazils nuts, resulting in improvements to healthcare in a region prone to malaria and dengue fever. CRISIL Crisil is a family-run social enterprise based in Cochabamba, Bolivia. It was set up in 1991 by two brothers, Carlos and Walter Bustos, who wanted to create beautiful glassware using eco-friendly methods. EL CEIBO One of the very first fair trade suppliers of cocoa used in Traidcraft’s first 134 traidcraftshop.co.uk

chocolate bars, El Ceibo represents almost 50 small cooperatives of cocoa producers. They have thrived through fair trade, managing to add value to their cocoa beans through processing themselves rather than selling to bigger traders.

MIFRUTA This small cooperative of around 25 members was formed in 2009, and supported into fair trade by Traidcraft. Through working together with Traidcraft, the cooperative has improved soil management and yields.

BURKINA FASO

CHINA

GEBANA Gebana D’Afrique works with 25 local cooperatives of mango growers, as well as providing employment for those involved in drying and processing the fruit. Drying mango is a great way to preserve and add value to this seasonal fruit. CHILE APICOOP A long-standing supplier of honey to Traidcraft, Apicoop supports over 300 producers in southern Chile with a mission to promote the social, cultural and economic development of small and medium beekeepers and to sell their honey at fair prices.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC COOPROAGRO With more than 2,000 members, Cooproagro focuses on providing technical assistance to farmers and improving the quality of cocoa beans, such that their reputation is second to none in the world of Fairtrade certified cocoa, which you can find in all of the Traidcraft and Eat Your Hat chocolate bars.

NATURAL HABITATS Natural Habitats has been producing organic palm oil since 2009, with small farmers who believe in the benefits of organic agriculture - living proof that the controversial commodity palm oil can be produced without negative impact on biodiversity and positively benefit small farmers. Used in Traidcraft’s Clean & Fair brand as well as biscuits. ESWATINI (formally Swaziland) ESWATINI KITCHEN Eswatini Kitchen was set up in 1991 by Manzini Youth Care (MYC), a Salesian NGO supporting marginalised youth in Swaziland. The profits were then fed back into MYC’s social programmes. But Eswatini didn’t stop there. The project started with five women working in a one-room-kitchen, and now stands as a thriving business supplying sauces and spreads worldwide; offering a fair and sustainable income for over 300 people from underprivileged communities. ETHIOPIA OROMIA The Oromia Coffee Farmer Cooperative Union represents the interests of more than 350 cooperatives and over 300,000 small

farmers across Ethiopia – the country where arabica coffees originated. Traidcraft uses organic and conventional coffees from a variety of the cooperatives. GHANA SERENDIPALM Serendipalm produces certified fair trade and organic palm oil, without the large infrastructure and monoculture cropping used by most palm oil manufacturers. The proceeds of fair trade have helped transform the community with investments in essentials such as healthcare, infrastructure and provision of clean water. Used in Traidcraft’s Clean & Fair brand as well as biscuits.

KUAPA KOKOO Kuapa Kokoo, which translates as ‘good cocoa farmer’ is a co-operative of vibrant smallholder farmers in Ghana. It was set up by farmers, for farmers, in 1993.

HONDURAS APROLMA Exclusively a women’s cooperative, each member organically owns an average of 1.5 hectares in mixed cultivation. The aim is not only to produce the very best coffee, but also to empower women and to offer them financial success and stability. Used in Eat Your Hat coffee.

They focus on agroecological work, as well as running a variety of social projects, including tackling domestic violence and supporting scholarships. It provides technical assistance and social development projects to the wider community and can be found in the Traidcraft roast and ground coffee blends. traidcraftshop.co.uk 135
