WELCOME TO

SUMMER ’21

It’s been a rollercoaster year and finally we can see light at the end of the tunnel. Our summer range should give you everything you need to make buying fair trade and Organic goods, easy. Making a real difference to some of our producers and helping fight trade, social and environmental injustice has never been simpler. Last year, with your support, we donated over £150,000 to our sister charity, Traidcraft Exchange, and from sales of our charity Christmas cards we were able to donate a further £51,000 to Traidcraft Exchange and other UK-based charities.

*Excluding Retailer accounts.

To all who helped us reach this total, a huge thank you from Team Traidcraft. The year ahead brings our vision back into focus; making capitalism fair and working with other ethical companies who want to help make ‘good mischief’ in the spirit of fair trade, operating transparently and building a community of like-minded businesses. Buying from us makes you powerful; you become part of that movement, a commitment to change and a challenge for business to be done fairly and ethically. Let’s enjoy the ride.

TRAIDCRAFT IS A CHRISTIAN RESPONSE TO was founded in 1979 by POVERTY. Traidcraft a group of Christians who wanted to challenge the deep injustices embedded in global trade. We want to remain true to our origins. We do not want to stop until trade is conducted fairly for the benefit of all who participate in the supply chain. We welcome everyone to join in our endeavour of making trade fair. We work with supporters of all faiths and none, and we work with farmers and artisans whatever their creed, ethnicity or religion. We believe that justice transcends ideology and individual beliefs.

We are very mindful of our heritage here at Traidcraft and being cofounders of the world fair trade movement could either mean a weight on our shoulders to uphold the original vision in all its glory, or a liberating sense of freedom to carry on breaking the normal rules of trade, whenever and wherever we can. We prefer the latter; guarding the flames, not tending the ashes. 4

There are lots of organisations throughout the world whose philosophy, mission and values are aligned with our own. We call ourselves Fair Trade Organisations (FTOs) and often work together. We are a member of two larger membership organisations:

The World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO), which is a larger global membership body of FTOs and importantly includes membership in the global South - in other words, producers from Africa, Central and Latin America and Asia who are seeking to benefit from fair trade. The European Fair Trade Association (EFTA), which is a group of like-minded FTOs in Europe, collaborating in product development, purchasing, fairly traded and organic goods.

F AIRTRA D E - C E R T I F ICATIO N And why it’s just not enough anymore...

Earlier this year, within our spring catalogue (p10-11 for reference), we shared our vision with you; where we see ourselves now and what we are working towards in the future. We also explained how we are hoping to achieve this, with one focus point being on our Traidcraft-branded products.

TO REFRESH YOUR MEMORY…

We always go further than just fair. You can rely on us to make the right, most ethical decision, for people and planet. Every time. e believe that consuming W ethically shouldn’t mean compromising on quality; our range is carefully and expertly curated. e only have one planet, so W we’re making sure that we look after it; from how our food and drink is wrapped and packaged, to where it comes from. e choose who we work with W very carefully, we want to work with those who are honourable, truthful and passionate, and those who believe in our vision. e believe FairtradeW certification just isn’t enough anymore, and that being organic really does matter. 8

traidcraftshop.co.uk

We were delighted and encouraged by the number of you who got in touch to let us know how pleased you were that we were able to share this sort of information, and how interested you were to hear more in the future. We were equally thrilled that it got many of you questioning us; it’s vital you keep us on our toes! It seemed it was the final bullet point on this list which really got you thinking. ‘We believe Fairtrade-certification just isn’t enough anymore, and that being organic really does matter.’ What do we mean by that? Are we distancing ourselves from the Fairtrade movement? What does it mean to go way above and beyond Fairtrade standards? We appreciate the time and consideration that goes into such questions – thank you. We hope the following helps paint a more nuanced picture of our intent and passion. Traidcraft – along with virtually every other alternative trading organisation (ATO), would consider themselves to be pioneers. ‘We’ set up the current Fairtrade concept back in the 1970s and 1980s. ‘We’, rather than just ‘us at Traidcraft’, as we are part of a pioneer movement of many hundreds of organisations worldwide.

PIONEERING MEANS GOING BEYOND, BEING ADVENTUROUS AND OFTEN REAPING A WHOLE LOT OF CRITICISM ON THE WAY Certification schemes like Fairtrade, World Fair Trade Organisation, The Small Producers Symbol, Fair for Life and Naturland Fair - all of which ‘we’ recognise as the true certifiers/valuers of fair trade products and organisations - emerged some 15 to 30 years later, and worked on codifying the systems that we had developed. One of Traidcraft’s senior staff members at the time, sat on the Fairtrade Certification Committee for about a decade, helping Fairtrade International - the umbrella organisation for the Fairtrade movement - capture our learnings about development through

WHY IS FAIR TRADE MORE IMPORTANT TO US THAN FAIRTRADE?

trade in their standards. We effectively handed over our systems and producer register to the Fairtrade Foundation back in the late 1990s, when Fairtrade International was formed. We have always recognised the importance of labels in helping get non-committed businesses or consumers to find an easy or understandable point of entry into our world. Each of the certification/valuer schemes mentioned above have different focus points, but none of them captures everything that we believe fair trade needs to be. At Traidcraft, we are much happier using the words ‘fair trade’ than ‘Fairtrade’. Fairtrade (one word) is a single certification system in which producers and buyers agree to uphold certain minimum standards and payments; in return their product can be labelled with the Fairtrade Foundation’s Fairtrade Mark. This certification scheme refers to a limited number of raw commodities (excluding handicrafts, for example). Fair trade (two words) means that something has been fairly traded, often above and beyond the minimum standards which Fairtrade sets. traidcraftshop.co.uk

9

Back in the mid-2000s, Fairtrade International had many discussions and debates about organic farming. There was a clear decision back then that they would happily promote more sustainable farming, (which it really does, and it has introduced tougher standards), but not go the whole hog and insist on organic. This was perfectly understandable, and probably right at the time, otherwise the likes of Nestle would never have joined and much good work would have been left undone. The pioneers, on the other hand, have been banging the drum about organic farming, bio-dynamic farming, circular economy farming, local farming etc. for many years and have led a broad movement of consumers, that stretches well beyond the confines of purist Fairtrade. Pioneering means going beyond, being adventurous and often reaping a whole lot of criticism on the way.

DID YOU KNOW? Circular economy farming involves farming methods which utilise unwanted by-products and waste, minimising external input. For example, using crop residues and manures as energy sources.

10 traidcraftshop.co.uk

We are delighted that the Fairtrade Foundation is now turning to climate change, and if it wishes to pursue this theme, it will, inevitably, have to confront the issue of organic farming again – around 20 years after the initial decision not to implement this in their standards. Naturland Fair has picked up on this gap and in mainland Europe is now one of the most prestigious certification systems combining Fairtrade and Organic in one label. The alternative trading organisations have been working with farmers on circular economy farming for the past 30 years with some extraordinary successes – all outside of the Fairtrade-certification scheme.

Our role, therefore, is always to be out ahead of any certification scheme and finding the way forward. In this respect, ‘we’ (again, meaning the entire ATO movement, rather than just Traidcraft) see ourselves at the very edge of the movement, normalising new concepts for certification schemes to codify in due course.

WE HAVE ALWAYS RECOGNISED THE IMPORTANCE OF

LABELS IN HELPING

GET NON-COMMITTED BUSINESSES OR

CONSUMERS TO

FIND AN EASY OR

UNDERSTANDABLE

POINT OF ENTRY INTO OUR WORLD

Fair trade is much larger than labels. We were out there, the first to sell fair trade coffee, tea, sugar, juice, honey, chocolate, rubber (the list goes on), way before standards and labels even existed. In many cases it was our work that helped create these standards in the first place! We’re continuing to look for new ways to do fair trade, pushing the boundaries, going beyond, challenging the norm, and even creating new ‘standards’ along the way.

FAIR TRADE LABELS WE SUPPORT Fairtrade International Owned by producers and licensing organisations (like the Fairtrade Foundation), primarily product focused but with no requirements for the organisation to be a fair trade company. The World Fair Trade Organization We helped found WFTO back in 1987 and since 2017, we’ve been a WFTO Guaranteed Fair Trade Organization, ensuring our residence in an international system which is producer and trader owned, and brings makers, growers, and buyers together in a forum for learning. The Small Producers Symbol Based in Mexico, this is the only system written, owned, and developed primarily by small producers in developing countries. Fair for Life This is an organic and productfocused fair trade certifier. The producers who farm the organic palm oil in FairPalm use this label. Naturland Fair A system owned by organic farmers that makes sure that both the product and the organisation are rooted in doing things fairly.

COFFEE NUMBERING SYSTEMS: WHAT DO THEY ACTUALLY MEAN?

What do the numbers on coffee packaging refer to? The numbers refer to the roasting colour, and not to ingredients or caffeine content. It’s also important to remember that every company can come up with its own numbering system, so there’s no real point of reference; a No 2 could be a light roast according to one roaster, but considered a medium to another roaster. Interestingly, Alex, who lives in Germany, tell us that in Germany nobody uses any numbering system for coffees - it seems to be largely just a British thing! If there is no ‘standard’, who decides which numbers are attributed to each coffee? With Traidcraft-branded coffee, as well as the Eat Your Hat range, it is

Traidcraft, in partnership with Ringtons (where the coffees are roasted), who define which numbers are attributed to which coffees. How do Traidcraft and Ringtons decide which coffee is labelled with which number? The number attributed to each coffee is mainly based on the roasting colour; typically, the darker the beans are roasted, the higher the number. Characteristics of Different Roasts On the whole, the darker the coffee bean is, the longer it was roasted. This is due to the natural sucrose (or sugar) within the bean, changing from sweet, to caramel, to burnt, as it journeys through the roasting process.

Here are some typical characteristics of light, medium and dark coffees. LIGHT ROAST: Usually more specialist coffees, offering delicately nuanced flavours. Low levels of bitterness, sweeter than counterparts. Often fruity and creamy notes. MEDIUM ROAST: Rich, smooth and well-rounded flavours, often with nutty, fruity and caramel notes. Still sweet, but not as sweet as light roasts – in fact typically a little more bitter than a light roast. DARK ROAST: Rich and intense flavours, often including smoky and spicy notes. More bitter than light and medium roasts, which is why they lend themselves to adding additional milk and sugar. traidcraftshop.co.uk 17

COLD BREW

COFFEE RECIPE

We’ve all perfected how to make our favourite cup of hot coffee, but during the summer months, why not try something a little bit different for your morning caffeine hit?

THE PERFECT SUMMER CAFFEINE HIT!

HOW TO MAKE 1. Coarsely grind coffee beans to roughly the same consistency of breadcrumbs. 2. Place ground coffee into a large mason jar and add cold water (1:8 ratio of coffee to cold water). 3. Stir until well combined and leave to steep overnight. (The brew can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge. The colder the temperature, the longer the mixture needs to brew). 4. Strain into a large bowl using a sieve. Discard your leftover grounds - why not pop them into your compost bin? 5. Tuck muslin or cheesecloth or coffee filter paper into cleaned sieve and strain back into jar. 6. Repeat 2-3 times until there is no murky residue left at the bottom of the jar. 7. Serve over ice and add milk or sugar for desired taste.

Our Coffee Expert, Alex, recommends using a light roast coffee like Traidcraft’s Burundi Kayanza coffee beans or Eat Your Hat’s Uganda ground coffee, due to their fruitiness.

TRAIDCRAFT'S GUIDE TO

Pollination is essential for the survival of many things, including around one third of crop production. Climate change is contributing to the rapid decline of pollinators, such as bees, wasps and beetles, which is having a devastating effect on the planet and the 7.9 billion people and thousands of unique species who call it home.

CONSIDER WEEDING LESS

Put that hoe down! Many plants which we consider pesky weeds, are actually a pollinator’s dream. Dandelions and lawn clover, for example, provide vital pollen for many species of bee. Some households even decide to dedicate a certain area of their garden to let nature roam free; letting weeds grow, undisturbed by the gardener’s vigilance. You don’t have to tell us twice…

30 traidcraftshop.co.uk

POLLINATORS TO YOUR GARDEN It’s time to step up. What can we do to attract these pollinators to our gardens this summer, giving them a helping hand with the important role they play? Read on for advice, ideas and inspiration… GROW PLANTS AND FLOWERS WHICH POLLINATORS LOVE Let us throw some big hitters for summer out there – we’re talking foxgloves, lavender and sunflowers, which are going to attract no end of pollinators, all season long. Plants like fennel and dill are also good to have in your garden, as butterfly larvae feed on them. Not only will your garden be a blaze of colour, but those pollinators are going to love you for it!

AVOID USING PESTICIDES AND INSECTICIDES

DID YOU KNOW? Research suggests that bees are more attracted to yellow, white and blue blooms

Discover how to make your own bee hotel on page 84

We get it. It can be very frustrating when a plant, shrub or tree you’ve either grown yourself, or spent good money on, falls victim to pests. Rather than using traditional, chemical-filled pesticides or insecticides, which are detrimental to wildlife and soil, you could consider a more natural solution. Having plants which attract ‘good bugs’ to your garden – i.e., the creatures whose diet includes the pests and larvae that are feeding on your plants, is the perfect way to combat the problem and take care of the planet at the same time. An example… Lacewings dine on aphids, mites and other small insects. Dandelions, cosmos, coriander and dill are examples of plants which attract lacewings. Consider planting them close to any plants you have pest problems with, for a chemical-free remedy!

CREATE A BEE HOTEL

Having a bee-safe structure, or ‘bee hotel’ as they’re fondly known, is a great way to attract solitary species of bee to your garden. Where honeybees typically live in hives, solitary bee species prefer nesting in cavities, where they can breed and lay their eggs. Remember to position your bee hotel in a full sun position if possible.

FAIR TRADE

VEGGIE BURGER RECIPE

METHOD

Perfect for al fresco dining, these red lentil-based burgers just scream garden party! We can almost hear those summer tunes and feel the sun on our faces as we speak... INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 cups Fairtrade, Organic, red lentils Extra virgin olive oil 1 chopped onion 3 chopped carrots 3 chopped garlic cloves Ground cumin 3/4 cup plain, dry breadcrumbs Chopped parsley leaves 2 eggs, locally sourced if possible Salt and pepper to season 34 traidcraftshop.co.uk

1. Cover lentils in cold water in your pan, and bring to a boil over heat. Once water is boiling, reduce the heat and simmer lentils for approx. 10 mins. Once tender, drain the lentils and put aside. 2. Drizzle some olive oil in a separate pan, and fry the onion until golden. Then, add carrots and garlic and cook until carrots soften slightly. Stir in some ground cumin and remove from heat. 3. Combine the carrot mixture with lentils, breadcrumbs, parsley, lightly whisked eggs, salt and pepper in a bowl. Form the mixture in your hands into burger shapes, approx. 8cm diameter and 2cm deep. 4. Line a baking tin. Brush both sides of the burgers with olive oil and cook under grill (alternatively you could grill on BBQ) until golden brown. This should take approx. five minutes per side.

NAMED MOST ETHICAL RICE BY ETHICAL CONSUMER!

This Fairtrade rice comes from a small producer group in Moe Goke, Myanmar (formally Burma). As well as receiving the Fairtrade minimum price ($381 per tonne, compared to the domestic price of $240 per tonne), the farmers receive a Fairtrade premium of around $2000. They chose to invest this in their revolving loan fund to support future investment in high quality rice seed. IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Hi Sebastian, thanks so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to speak to us. Can you start by explaining a little bit about what a farmer’s daily routine looks like? Sebastian: Every day farmers work in their farm to care for their crops and work on anything that is required that day; pruning, weeding and harvesting, with the help of their families and/or workers. There is always something to do on the farm. Sounds like the farmers never have a spare moment! How are the fruits harvested? Sebastian: When the fruit is ripe, workers harvest by hand, either by using a scythe fit onto a long pole or by shimmying up the tree and using a machete to cut down the bunches. Once the 44 traidcraftshop.co.uk

Through working with Serendipalm as well as Natural Habitats in Ecuador, Traidcraft has developed FairPalm – the world’s only fair trade, organic palm oil, that protects the environment while supporting smallholder growers. Today, we’re speaking to Natural Habitats' Sebastian Rojas, on all things climate change and organic.

bunches are harvested, the farmers cart them to a central point for transport to or pick up for the mill. They either use donkeys, horses, oxen or small trucks for this. When in the year is the harvest for palm oil? Sebastian: Fresh fruit bunches ripen in 20 weeks and are harvested throughout the year. Farmers need to monitor their plantation daily for ripe fruit that can be harvested. Since the fruit is harvested all year long, palm oil farming ensures a steady flow of work and income. Yet, high season is during the rainy season, which, in Ecuador, is from December until May. Farmers save money

from this period in order to maintain their farm and families during the year. Many farmers diversify their production as a way to have an alternative source of income during the low season.

READ SEBASTIAN’S FULL INTERVIEW OVER ON OUR BLOG

Sebastian: Organic makes a difference because chemicals are not allowed – farmers don’t use synthetic fertiliser, herbicides or pest control. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are also not allowed. Instead cover crops and organic fertilization is used to keep the soil healthy and provide for the necessary nutrients. And natural solutions are used for pest control. Interesting! You mentioned the natural solutions for pest control – can you tell us a little more about that? Sebastian: Since our operations are 100% organic, eco-friendly techniques are used. The most common technique is to set traps made of containers filled with raw sugar cane, pineapple and water in order to attract the insect Rhynchophorus Palmarum (a.k.a. the

South American palm weevil), a vector of many diseases. In the case of leaf cutter insects, farmers collect these insects manually as a way to reduce their population. Are there any water saving processes you use? Sebastian: Most of the farmers are water efficient by default, as they don't have irrigation. They use the natural technique of cover crops, which helps to store water in the soil to overcome the dry season. As intercropping is something that is important to you, apart from palm oil, what else do the farmers grow? Sebastian: Many of our farmers grow different crops in their plantation. Common crops that are cultivated

are cocoa, plantain, bananas and passion fruit. Some farmers also cultivate other fruits, but also pepper. The different crops are not necessarily intercropped with oil palm, as this if considered inefficient for managing the land and harvesting the crop. We mostly see a mosaic type plantation with the different crops planted in specific areas of the farm. Is climate change affecting the farmers? If yes, how have they adapted? Sebastian: Yes. There are more severe droughts during the dry season. And droughts affect yield. Reforestation of the river shores has contributed to protecting the rivers from drying out during this period to ensure the availability of local water sources.

BEE HOTEL A few months ago, Traidcraft’s very own Jude shared some photos with us of a bee hotel she has in her garden. She explained it was made by her Dad, David. We loved it so much, we decided to pick David’s brains on exactly how and why he made it.

GREAT GIFT IDEA! Why not make your own bee hotel to gift to a friend or family member? Jude’s Dad made this for her five-year wedding anniversary, with the theme for five years being wood. We love it!

Over to you, David… "For hibernation and fertilising, the solitary bee likes safe little cavities – ideally small round holes, between 2 - 10mm in diameter and 3cm deep, in pieces of wood. An individual bee will lay two or three eggs in each hole, seal them in with wax, and leave them until the babies can dig their way out and take flight. If your bee hotel also includes other materials such as twigs, pieces of bark and pinecones, it will also provide a 84 traidcraftshop.co.uk

habitat for bugs, insects, ladybirds, caterpillars, etc. They can all live happily together under one roof. You can buy a bee hotel from a garden centre or other outlet. But it is much more fun, creative and satisfying to make your own – especially if you improvise, using left-over materials or whatever you find or happen to have available. This will give your bee hotel a homely, patchwork feel, and will make it uniquely yours. Remember that the bees will not mind how fancy or professional it looks.”

WHY NOT MAKE YOUR OWN? THE BOX:

The shape and size of the box doesn't really matter. Something about the size of a shoe box would be ideal, though it only needs to be 8 - 10cm deep. Alternatively, make your own box out of left-over pieces of timber (see how to over on our blog).

An easy way to fill your bee hotel is to pack it with a variety of pieces of wood, into which you have drilled holes about 4 – 6cm deep, and varying between 2 - 10cm in diameter. The holes can be scattered randomly; they don't need to be neat and tidy. The wood can be rectangular blocks or sections of thin logs the same length as the depth of your box. An excellent addition can be hollow lengths of bamboo cane, either bound together in bunches or used to fill gaps between wooden pieces.

To widen the range of visitors who will use your hotel, you might like to divide the box into several compartments, each with a different filling. These fillings can be things found around your garden, work shed or picked up on a woodland walk: pinecones, small sticks, twigs, pieces of bark, bunches of lavender, dried heather or grasses, for example. Whatever fillings you decide on, make sure they are stuffed tightly in: small creatures like cosy places. To hold the fillings in place, you could use a piece of mesh such as chicken-wire stapled to the front. Once it’s made, hang your bee hotel on a flat wall, preferably roughly south-facing and at least a metre from the ground, and just leave it there! Don't expect to see lots of comings and goings: the inhabitants are there for long stays, possibly right through winter. But you can be sure that they will appreciate your hospitality, and that your whole garden will benefit. traidcraftshop.co.uk 85

Child Rescue Nepal works to free children from slavery, which is acutely in line with Namaste’s values and is why they have been supporting them for almost 20 years. There are over 22 million people trapped in slavery globally, and it is estimated that around a quarter of these are children. In Nepal alone, it is estimated that there are almost 100,000 vulnerable child slaves working in hazardous situations, where they are commonly exposed to physical, emotional and sexual abuse. They work with local police to raid factories, restaurants and hotels where children are being held captive, prosecute perpetrators of the abuse, raise awareness of trafficking in schools and work to provide counselling and medical care in their safe houses.

ORGANIC COTTON and why we love it Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic, persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. This means that your beautiful wardrobe pieces are not only soft on your skin, but gentle on the earth and kind to people, too.

IMPACT ON PEOPLE Farmers and their families are kept safer when growing Organically as they are not exposed to toxic chemicals in their fields, food or water supply. It also means farmers grow more than one crop which supplements their food and income.

IMPACT ON PLANET The process of growing Organic cotton doesn’t damage the soil, in fact, it replenishes and maintains soil fertility. It also has less impact on the air, uses 88% less water and 62% less energy to produce. Organic cotton is predominantly rain-fed, which reduces pressure on local water sources. 106 traidcraftshop.co.uk

SEACELL (TM)

So, what's all the fuss about?

WHAT ON EARTH IS SEACELL™? What if we told you that the components which make up your favourite items of clothing didn’t have to involve farming or animals? What if they came from an abundant, sustainable resource, like seaweed? Yep, you read that right… seaweed. Welcome the innovative and progressive new fabric, SeaCell™. SeaCell™ is made from a brown algae called ascophyllum nodossum, also known as Knotted Wrack, which grows in the Icelandic Fjords.

HOW IS SEACELL™ MADE? Through a solvent-spinning process, cellulose is dissolved and mixed with washed and filtered seaweed, to create a sturdy yarn. This process locks in the beneficial properties of seaweed.

108 traidcraftshop.co.uk

See page 110 for Thought Madelyn Patterned Slacks

WHY IS SEACELL (TM) SO GOOD? • The fabric absorbs bodily moisture faster than cotton. • It’s wearable, breathable, absorbent, lightweight and soft. • The end product is 100% biodegradable.

FA S H I O N

• Seaweed for use in SeaCell™ is collected by Smartfiber AG (using a special machine with blades that do not cause any permanent damage). They harvest a batch of seaweed once every four years and cut it only above the regenerative part of the plant. This ensures that the seaweed isn't permanently damaged. Cutting the upper portion of the plant in this manner encourages the plant to sprout more. • Seaweed in SeaCell™ is dried naturally and not subject to any chemical treatment, ensuring that the natural components of the plant are retained. • Since seaweed is renewable and the production method is extremely energy-efficient, this is one of the most eco-friendly fabrics around!

From the fair trade food and drink we offer, to handmade crafts and slow, sustainable fashion, everything in our collection has been selected with the environment in mind. Additionally, unless extremely delayed, all of our products arrive by boat.

WHO WE WORK WITH Catalogues Our seasonal catalogues: A re made from sustainably sourced paper Are plastic-free Are recyclable Are printed in an efficient factory where 100% of energy comes from renewable sources, and zero waste is just around the corner (currently just 0.05% of their waste ends in landfill!) In fact, they have more than halved their carbon footprint since 2014!

FULFILLING YOUR ORDERS

One significant step on our journey to becoming the ultimate eco-business is how we package your orders. We use paper tape and paper void fill, as well as compostable bags when packaging liquids. Every small change we make gets us one step closer to our dream of one day becoming carbon neutral.

Photography For our product photoshoots, we use family-run, local photographers, CTP Creative Imaging, who are located in Northumberland. Apart from regularly running completely off-grid, CTP Creative Imaging used their time during lockdown to plant a small orchard of apple trees in their grounds, to help offset their carbon footprint. Couriers For any of your orders which exceed 2kg, DPD are our courier of choice. Apart from their flexible, userfriendly service for both shippers and shoppers, we choose to work with DPD as their green policies are very much aligned with our own. traidcraftshop.co.uk 121

WHERE IN THE WORLD?

Traidcraft has established meaningful relationships with producers and suppliers from all around the world, some of which we’ve been working with since the very beginning, over 40 years ago! We’ve also formed relationships with new suppliers and producers over the years, bringing an ever-increasing range of products to homes around the UK. This is a list of the fair trade suppliers we’ve collaborated with to curate our Summer 2021 range of handcrafted masterpieces, sustainable fashion and incredible, fair trade edibles.

BOLIVIA ANAPQUI Established in 1983, Anapqui is dedicated to improving the living conditions of rural farmers in Bolivia and promoting organic agriculture. You can find their quinoa in our pasta. COINACAPA This cooperative collects the Brazil nuts that fall from Amazonian rainforest trees. More than 1000 families benefit from exporting Brazils nuts, resulting in improvements to healthcare in a region prone to malaria and dengue fever. CRISIL Crisil is a family-run social enterprise based in Cochabamba, Bolivia. It was set up in 1991 by two brothers, Carlos and Walter Bustos, who wanted to create beautiful glassware using eco-friendly methods. EL CEIBO One of the very first fair trade suppliers of cocoa used in Traidcraft’s first chocolate bars, El Ceibo represents almost 50 small cooperatives of cocoa producers. They have thrived through fair trade, managing to add value 124 traidcraftshop.co.uk

to their cocoa beans through processing themselves rather than selling to bigger traders. BURKINA FASO GEBANA Gebana D’Afrique works with 25 local cooperatives of mango growers, as well as providing employment for those involved in drying and processing the fruit. Drying mango is a great way to preserve and add value to this seasonal fruit. CHILE APICOOP A long-standing supplier of honey to Traidcraft, Apicoop supports over 300 producers in southern Chile with a mission to promote the social, cultural and economic development of small and medium beekeepers and to sell their honey at fair prices. MIFRUTA This small cooperative of around 25 members was formed in 2009, and supported into fair trade by Traidcraft. Through working together with Traidcraft, the cooperative has improved soil management and yields.

CHINA NANJING COUNTY YIFENG FRUITS AND VEGETABLES SPECIALIZED COOPERATIVE SOCIETY Comprises of 12 farmers, 20 hectares of land and can harvest 1800mt of fresh ginger. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC COOPROAGRO With more than 2,000 members, Cooproagro focuses on providing technical assistance to farmers and improving the quality of cocoa beans, such that their reputation is second to none in the world of Fairtrade certified cocoa, which you can find in all of the Traidcraft and Eat Your Hat chocolate bars. ECUADOR NATURAL HABITATS Natural Habitats has been producing organic palm oil since 2009, with small farmers who believe in the benefits of organic agriculture - living proof that the controversial commodity palm oil can be produced without negative impact on biodiversity and positively benefit small farmers. Used in Traidcraft’s biscuits.

ESWATINI KITCHEN Eswatini Kitchen was set up in 1991 by Manzini Youth Care (MYC), a Salesian NGO supporting marginalised youth in Swaziland. The profits were then fed back into MYC’s social programmes. But Eswatini didn’t stop there. The project started with five women working in a one-room-kitchen, and now stands as a thriving business supplying sauces and spreads worldwide.. ETHIOPIA OROMIA The Oromia Coffee Farmer Cooperative Union represents the interests of more than 350 cooperatives and over 300,000 small farmers across Ethiopia – the country where arabica coffees originated. Traidcraft uses organic and conventional coffees from a variety of the cooperatives. GHANA SERENDIPALM Serendipalm produces certified fair trade and organic palm oil, without the large infrastructure and monoculture cropping used by most palm oil manufacturers. The proceeds of fair trade have helped transform the community with investments in essentials such as healthcare, infrastructure and provision of clean water. Used in Traidcraft’s biscuits. KUAPA KOKOO Kuapa Kokoo, which translates as ‘good cocoa farmer’ is a co-operative of vibrant smallholder farmers in Ghana. It was set up by farmers, for farmers, in 1993.

HONDURAS APROLMA Exclusively a women’s cooperative, each member organically owns an average of 1.5 hectares in mixed cultivation. The aim is not only to produce the very best coffee, but also to empower women and to offer them financial success and stability. Used in Eat Your Hat coffee. COMBRIFOL Established in 2004, Combrifol works with small-scale coffee farmers to challenge poverty amongst the indigenous Lenca people. They focus on agro-ecological work, as well as running a variety of social projects, including tackling domestic violence and supporting scholarships. COMSA This society of coffee farmers formed in 2001, and serves up to 600 producers. It provides technical assistance and social development projects to the wider community and can be found in the Traidcraft roast and ground coffee blends. INDIA ASHA Based in India and set up in 1975, Asha is an organisation who support the lives of the artisans who lovingly create their products. In Sanskrit, Asha translates as ‘hope’, which is exactly what the organisation gives to 1,000s of craftspeople who have inherited their artistic methods from generations before them. FTAK The Fair Trade Alliance of Kerala is a registered society of small farmers commercialising, at improved prices, all of their

diverse agricultural outputs. Currently Traidcraft use their nuts and spices in various food products. NOAH’S ARK Noah’s Ark work with a multi-talented crowd of paper crafters, wood carvers, metal workers, and skilled painters. ORGANIC WAYANAD Based in the state of Kerala, Organic Wayanad is a charitable society promoting and developing organic agriculture, training its membership of over 400 farmers, and commercialising all of the agricultural outputs, including coffee, cocoa and spices. INDONESIA PERMATA GAYO Located in the Aceh region of Sumatra, this cooperative came together in 2006, when people were able to return to their land following conflict and the devastating tsunami of 2004. Their coffee has a reputation for being great quality, and is found in Eat Your Hat coffee. ITALY ALTROMERCATO A social and green food supply chain creator, based in Italy. Altromercato abide by and respect the international principles of WFTO (World Fair Trade Organization). MI N I MUM O R D E R VA LU E We have recently introduced a minimum order value of £10 for all web and phone orders. As transparency is one of our key values here at Traidcraft, let us explain why. The minimum order value means we can work smarter; our Warehouse Team, who are paid the National Living Wage, pick and pack hundreds of orders per day. After all overheads are taken into account, including wages, orders must be greater than £10 to be commercially viable. We hope that this explains the thinking behind our decision.
