‘LIFT YOUR EYES’ THEME OF 2016 PARENT AND LEADER CONVENTION IN NASHVILLE SINCE OUR LAUNCH ON JANUARY 1, 2014, TRAILMEN HAVE ASKED, “WHEN WILL WE HAVE ANOTHER GATHERING LIKE THE INAUGURAL CONVENTION IN NASHVILLE?” In that Convention, twelve hundred gathered (1,100 men) from 44 states to witness the revealing of the Trail Life USA name and the beginnings of our Program, as well as to hear from Dr. Michael Farris, Governor Mike Huckabee, and the founding Board members of Trail Life USA. That first year we focused on getting the organization on track through ten Trail Leader Trainings, hosted by volunteer leaders in cities from Springfield, VA to Portland, OR. Then, we conducted training events like EQUIP64 in dozens of cities, with most of these organized and run by volunteer leaders. Gatherings like the Vanguard Academy, FreedomFirst, Summer Adventure and Paintball Tournament, multiple successful area gatherings, and trainings and activities at Camp Aiken (our Home Base Camp south of Greenville, SC) and more have made it a great two years of Trailmen getting to know one another as we build a culture.

IT’S TIME TO GO BACK TO NASHVILLE, TO THE SHERATON MUSIC CITY HOTEL — August 11-14, 2016. The Parent and Leader Convention is tentatively scheduled every 6 years and will focus on continuing to develop the mentors and the message that will make Trail Life USA successful in “ … building generations of courageous young men who honor God, lead with integrity, serve others, and experience outdoor adventure.” Join us as we celebrate the theme, “Lift Your Eyes,” a reminder that the work is worth it, and God has a plan for a harvest that includes us! The Convention opens on Friday night with a general session. Leading up to the opening there is an optional Thursday Night Meet-and-Greet and all-day training on Friday, including Troop Training Basics taught by key Regional/Area Volunteer Leaders and Home Office Staff. Saturday will start with a general session, dismissing to workshops with plenty of opportunities for parents and leaders alike. Saturday night will bring our optional formal banquet with an excellent speaker with a message to entertain and inspire. While this event is aimed at adults, we have a Family National Convention/Summer Adventure planned for 2018. That will feature events and activities for boys, leaders, and parents. NOT JUST GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS We call them Faith Building Activities for a good reason. We don’t just want a Trailman to check off a box or answer one question about how he is maturing spiritually. We want a comprehensive requirement that really moves him forward spiritually. We want

NAVIGATORS Navigators Faith Building Activities offer a wide variety of options for the Trailman to consider for fulfilling his Ready Trailman requirement. These include approved Religious Recognitions, the Trail Life USA Worthy Life Award, Manhood Journey or a Values Trail Badge. The variety of options is designed to grow a Trailman spiritually no matter what point he is starting from and the selection of activity should take that into consideration. Full details about these selections are available on the TroopTrack Leader Pages in the Program section. INDIVIDUAL

VALUES TRAIL BADGE

A Trailman may also choose to complete a Values Trail Badge to fulfill his requirement. This selection is allowed for any Trailman but is especially appropriate for those at the beginning of their Christian walk. ADULT MENTORED

RELIGIOUS RECOGNITIONS

A variety of approved Religious Recognitions for Navigators are recognized by Trail Life USA for fulfilling this requirement. See the current list online. ADULT MENTORED

NAVIGATOR WORTHY LIFE AWARD

Working with an approved adult mentor, a Trailman must complete an individualized or group discipleship Bible study over a period of three months consisting of at least 10 one-hour mentored sessions. He must also complete an approved discipleship activity like reading a Christian book or attending a retreat as well as participate in regular meetings with his mentor, including a final conference. This option is the most flexible in terms of curriculum as any bible study approved by the mentor and the Trailman’s parents is permitted. It provides a lot of latitude in selecting material to accommodate any denomination or for when Trailmen are participating in other bible study groups outside Trail Life USA such as catechism studies or AWANA.

MANHOOD JOURNEY™

FATHER-SON MENTORED

The purpose of the Manhood Journey is to provide a Christian discipleship program for our Troops that is aimed at building young men spiritually through Bible study and faith mentorship. As an introductory experience in discipleship, the Manhood Journey requires no formal training in ministry. The curriculum will guide the group along a trail of Bible study and discipleship. While the programming is intended for fathers and their sons, other adults who play a trusted role in a boy’s life may and are encouraged to participate in lieu of a boy’s father if necessary. Manhood Journey is a third-party developed program with a robust set of curriculum materials available to our Trail Life USA members at a discount.

DID YOU KNOW? The Worthy Life Award is available to earn at five levels: three Woodlands Trail, plus Navigator and Adventurer. 2

his mentor to see the fruit of that growth in their conferences together and his parents to see it in his actions. We are unapologetically Christ-Centered and are committed to growing every Trailman’s faith while he is involved in our program.

ADVENTURERS Adventurers take it up a notch with their choices. As they mature in age their spiritual growth matures also. As Trailmen prepare to go out into the world, peer-topeer mentoring options are good choices. A variety of options allows Trailmen, their parents, and their leaders to determine which is the best solution for their maturity and commitment level. Trailmen can choose to complete more than one option as an Adventurer for a Freedom Experience credit, too!

RELIGIOUS RECOGNITIONS

ADULT MENTORED

A variety of approved Religious Recognitions for Adventurers are recognized by Trail Life USA for fulfilling this requirement. See the current list online.

ADVENTURER WORTHY LIFE AWARD

ADULT MENTORED

Trailmen complete a three month minimum individualized or group discipleship program under a mentor’s guidance. A Trailman must participate in a bible study for at least twelve one-hour mentored sessions as well as complete a discipleship activity like reading a Christian book or participating in a Christian retreat or conference. He must also complete a reflection activity like sharing his faith publically, writing an essay, delivering a presentation, or creating a video to share what he has learned with someone else. This option is the most flexible in terms of curriculum as any bible study approved by the mentor and the Trailman’s parents is permitted. It provides a lot of latitude in selecting material to accommodate any denomination or for when Trailmen are participating in other bible study groups outside Trail Life USA.

TRAIL LIFE USA BAND OF BROTHERS

PEER TO PEER MENTORED

The purpose of the Band of Brothers is to provide a Christian discipleship focused program aimed at building young men spiritually through Bible study and faith mentorship. The Band of Brothers program has Trailmen disciple other Trailmen in Christian growth under the advisement of adult mentor(s) for a period of one year. This program is specifically for Christian young men that have a special heart for Jesus and a desire to take their walk to a higher level of Christian growth and discipleship. The material is determined by the participants with the help of the mentor. Members may plan social time, have accountability partners, or invite other Trailmen within their Area to participate.

VANGUARD PROGRAM

PEER TO PEER MENTORED

Vanguard is a varsity-level, faith-building ministry option for 10th to 12th grade youth and men who are passionate about serving God and emulating Jesus Christ as compelling leaders. Rooted in high adventure, and dedicated to preparing men for Christian life, this activity emphasizes discipleship and ministry, physical discipline, and ambassadorship. Vanguard is the most intense and involved faith building activity offered by Trail Life USA and includes an additional application for membership and a significant time commitment. 3

AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS AND TRAIL LIFE USA: GROWING AND SERVING TOGETHER

Following the 2015 Memorandum of Ministry Alliance between American Heritage Girls and Trail Life USA, 2016 brings numerous joint ventures involving these aligned ministries. All across the nation, churches are lining up to charter with both organizations. Charter Organizations understand the benefits of hosting Troops that minister to their members and their communities. AHG and TLUSA, when offered as ministries together in a Charter Organization, can impact not just boys and girls, but also moms and dads and even grandparents! Opportunities for leadership, mentorship, and discipleship abound for the whole family when our Christ-centered programs are implemented together as additional avenues for church in-reach and outreach. What is better than learning together, experiencing outdoor adventure, sharing Christ’s love through worship, and service to others? Looking ahead, consider planning AHG/TLUSA activities together in 2016 during these upcoming events: Spring recruitment activities (March), National Day of Prayer (May 5th), Memorial Day celebrations (May 30th), Trail Life USA Sunday (June 26th), Independence Day parades and festivities, fall recruitment/Join the Trail open houses (September), See You at the Pole (September 28th), and Operation Christmas Child box packing parties (November). If you are considering expanding the youth ministry at your church and would like to find out more about starting an American Heritage Girls Troop, please visit: www.AmericanHeritageGirls.org. If you have questions about how these two ministries operate together in a Charter Organization, please see the FAQ’s on the Troop Leader pages in TroopTrack.

JUNE 2015

BOYS HOME OF THE SOUTH & TRAIL LIFE USA REAFFIRM HISTORIC COMMITMENT TO CONTINUE LEGACY OF SERVING BOYS AFTER PERIOD OF UNCERTAINTY PARTIES CONFIRM CAMP AIKEN PROPERTY AND ENDOWMENT WILL PASS TO TRAIL LIFE USA PERMANENTLY IN APRIL 2016 Members of the Board of Directors of the Boys Home of the South (BHOTS) and Trail Life USA (TLUSA) recently came together for a full day meeting and amicably resolved any concerns that had developed between the organizations. The Boys Home of the South and Trail Life USA are pleased to jointly and publicly announce that the legacy of Charles Aiken will continue at the property located in Belton, South Carolina, 30 minutes outside of Greenville, as Trail Life USA takes permanent ownership and use of the property as its Home Office, national training facility and youth camp in April, 2016. The property shall be permanently named “Charles Aiken Camp.” Doug McCarthy, Chairman of the Board for Boys Home of the South made the following statement: “We are pleased to be moving forward with transferring the Boys Home of the South property to Trail Life USA. Charles Aiken’s legacy will continue well into the future through the programs put forth by Trail Life.” John Stemberger, Chairman of the Board of Trail Life USA said, “We are grateful for the generosity and wisdom of BHOTS and pledge to carry forward the legacy of Charles Aiken by continuing to use the property to guide generations of courageous young men to honor God, lead with integrity, serve others, and experience outdoor adventure.”

Trail Life USA and American Heritage Girls enter into an historic agreement as Christian-based alternatives to Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.

TRAIL LIFE USA EMPHASIZES SERVICE. SERVING IS CENTRAL IN OUR MISSION STATEMENT: “ … TO GUIDE GENERATIONS OF

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER

COURAGEOUS YOUNG MEN TO HONOR GOD, LEAD WITH INTEGRITY, SERVE OTHERS…”

WE ARE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS CHRIST, THE GREATEST SERVANT WHO EVER LIVED!

THERE IS HOPE, AMERICA! It is time: time for freedom, time for integrity, time for family, time for truth, time for prayer; prayer for such a time as this. Join together in prayer with millions across the nation on Thursday, May 5th.

Twice a year—in January and June—we ask Troops to make an intentional effort to serve, picking a project that can be done as a group. The January project benefits your Charter Organization. In June, it’s to benefit the much broader community.

WAKE UP AMERICA IS THE THEME OF THE 2016 NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER, BASED ON ISAIAH 58:1A.

There’s no list of “required” service project activities. Any act of service you want to do counts, as long as it benefits the larger community. Hopefully you’ll think even bigger, benefitting an organization that does good work. Build a Habitat house. Serve food at a homeless shelter. Many Troops are restoring trails for state and local parks—do something for others, beyond your church, beyond your Troop. If you need ideas, search online or ask your local Area Team.

“Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.” Our hope is that you, your family, and members of your Troop will be a part of lifting up America in prayer that day. Organizers in your area are already planning the festivities. Many cities hold breakfast or lunchtime gatherings in churches, parks, or on the steps of city hall. Community leaders often lead in the ceremony. It’s one of the few times that a public display of faith is welcome in the public square, so make the most of it!

In return, we want to award your Troop a ribbon to recognize your efforts. Ribbons signify achievement, and can be hung at your meeting place or displayed attached to your Troop flag. Ribbons will be sent in July. To qualify for the recognition, you’ll be asked to provide the following information:

Go to www.NationalDayofPrayer.org for more info. On the site, you will find contact information for your state coordinator. Just reach out and volunteer your Troop to help. Coordinators may ask your Trailmen to help spread the word, set up chairs, welcome attendees, or lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Asking to lead the flag ceremony as a Trail Life Color Guard might be just what their event needs—and they may not even know it until you suggest it!

• Your full Troop # (Example: SC-0725) • Name of the project you chose, and what/who it benefitted • Brief description of the project (Example: “Lined nursing home parking lot”) • Number of participants • Total # of service hours for this specific effort (for example, 20 Trailmen x 3 hours each = 60 hours) • Mailing address and name of recipient where the ribbon is to be sent • Attach a photo of participants Troop members and families in (any style of) Trail Life uniform

So it’s not so much how you participate, it’s that you do! Your Troop can earn a Flag Ribbon for your Troop flag by doing just two things: • Volunteering on May 5th through the local/state NDP leader (visit www.NationalDayofPrayer.org/state-coordinators for information) • Completing the TLUSA online submission form and uploading photos of your participation by the deadline of May 15th. The link will be provided by email, and also posted in the TroopTrack Leader Pages.

THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO TO FURTHER THE MISSION OF TRAIL LIFE USA. WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR YOUR PARTNERSHIP IN DEVELOPING YOUNG MEN WITH SERVANT’S HEARTS!

DID YOU KNOW? Navigators have earned 1077 Service Stars for a total of 16,155 hours. Adventurers have earned 564 Service Stars for a total of 11,280 hours.

WOODLANDS TRAIL PROGRAM TO GET UPGRADED!

NO TRAILMEN LEFT BEHIND!

TRAIL LIFE USA IS COMMITTED TO A CONTINUAL REVIEW OF OUR PROGRAM OFFERINGS. We want to be sure they best meet the Mission of Trail Life USA “ … to guide generations of courageous young men to honor God, lead with integrity, serve others, and experience outdoor adventure.”

WHERE DO WE GO FOR SUCH A REVIEW? TO OUR VOLUNTEER LEADERS IN THE FIELD, OF COURSE! Based on feedback from numerous volunteers in the field over the last two years and the work of the Woodlands Trail Volunteer Committee at the Program 2.0 Summit at Camp Aiken in January 2016, revisions to the Woodlands Trail program will be implemented in two phases over the next 18 months.

QUICK SUMMARY OF VERSION 1.5 CHANGES (SPRING 2016) • Lessons are organized and earned by working on one Branch at a time. All Branches will be worked on every program year. This ™ will allow a Branch Award to be earned every six to eight weeks. Trailman will earn awards regularly over the two-year program and be able to display their Branch Awards on their uniform longer. • Leaves required to earn a Branch Award are reduced to 9 allowing the Forest Award to be earned the first year in the program. • Forest Award requires 81 leaves to earn including earning the 7 ™ Branch Awards. • Sylvan Stars are earned by completing an additional nine leaves per branch after earning the Forest Award. • Up to two leaves per branch per level can be earned by completing the Family recommendation of the Lesson Plan at home for the ™ Forest Award and for a Sylvan Star. • All ‘Hit the Trail!’ Lessons are available to all levels. • The Timberline Award is revised to eliminate ambiguity and strengthened to be a better capstone award for Woodlands Trail. Full instructions are outlined in the new Woodlands Trail Leader Guide version 1.5 and should be consulted prior to implementation.

VERSION 2.0 IMPROVEMENTS (SPRING 2017)

WELCOME TO 2016! Hopefully your Troop has gotten past the holiday lull and has started meeting regularly again. But is anyone missing? Many youth sports teams, clubs, and organizations have rules about missed meetings: miss three times and you are off the team! Or maybe some members “fall behind” and are unable to “catch up.” Not so in Trail Life! Members join for a full year, and can participate as often as they are able. But some missing members need a friendly invite back into the fold! It’s time for the Troop to call, send a text, and an email—make that young man feel welcome! Ask your Troop’s Ranger, Trailmaster, and Advisor to take an inventory of who hasn’t returned since Christmas break. Then see that these Leaders take responsibility for reaching out and making contact ASAP. Set a deadline, and have them report back.

THIS COULD MAKE AN ETERNAL DIFFERENCE FOR SOME YOUNG MAN. NO TRAILMEN LEFT BEHIND!

You can view TroopTrack by visiting www.TroopTrack.com/trail_life_usa

DID YOU KNOW? Leader Pages on TroopTrack are chocked full of information for everyone, not just leaders. Check it out!

Version 2.0 revisions will be made to better prepare the Woodlands Trailman to transition to the Navigator badge-based program. This includes progressive skill instruction through the three Woodlands Trail age groups and a handbook for parents with learning objectives for each age group as well as other changes. The program will still be a participation-based program but will increase family involvement.

TROOP FUNDRAISING LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN!

TRAIL LIFE USA IS EXCITED TO PARTNER WITH HEART AND SOUL CANDIES IN A NEW WEB-BASED PROGRAM CALLED THE “FUNDRAISING STORE” THAT ALLOWS TROOPS TO ORDER PRE-RESEARCHED PRODUCTS WITH CONFIDENCE IN ONE PLACE. PLUS, your customer can be led there through door-to-door sales to make additional purchases long after you’ve moved on, AND YOUR TROOP GETS THE CREDIT! As a Troop you will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of products such as chocolate, coffee, and trail mix that have been produced specifically for Trail Life. These offerings will grow over time, using ideas for products that come from you! All of the products and companies will go through numerous stages of testing before final approval. They must be able to offer (among other things) free shipping, a quality product, realistic pricing, 30-day payments options for Troops, quick turnaround time, etc. Plus, in order to keep your business and the business of other Trail Life Troops, they will be held to the highest standards of excellence in customer service! While Troops are always free to pursue their own fundraising opportunities, we have done the work for you and provided you with a one-stop shop.

NOT ONLY THAT, YOUR CUSTOMER CAN GO TO THE SITE AND ORDER DIRECT, AND YOUR TROOP WILL GET THE CREDIT!

HOW IT WORKS When you click on the “Troop Fundraising” tab in the “Who We Are” tab of the Trail Life USA website, you will be directed to a landing page that will instruct you every step of the way, from exploring the possibilities to ordering the products. We have made it easy to understand! After you place your order, you can rest assured that every effort will be made to provide you with the best fundraising experience you’ve ever had. Our goal is for you to spend your time growing Godly men, not spending hours stressing over how to pay for the adventure your Trailmen want! When you decide on the products your Troop will sell, you can also utilize social media to invite friends and family to the store where they can order quality items--and 25% of their payment will go to your Troop! It is easy for them to utilize the drop down box to find your Troop and assign the credit. Most fundraising companies focus on one type of product, but this store will continue to add new products to cover a wide range of categories. Each quarter your Troop will receive a check for web sales. While we will focus on door-to-door and storefront sales in the fall, the web store will operate year round. Do you realize how many people your troop and their parents can reach with a simple invitation?

HEART&SOUL CANDIES

OUR PROMISE Our promise is that we will offer the type of product that will keep customers coming back to the site time-after-time.
