WILLIAM ACHEFF

The Spencer carbine is immediately recognized as having been Apache owned by the brass tacks and the rawhide support around the cracked gunstock. Remington’s painting shows an Apache holding a Spencer carbine which was why I picked it for this painting. I modified this painting four times in the course of three years. I was never really convinced that I was finished with it. I changed the wall three times, changed one of the arrows to an Apache type arrow with the two piece shaft, aged the red blanket and modified the print. I always like to combine contemporary thinking to the past as I feel nothing really changes. Peace usually follows war.

Peace Came Eventually, oil on canvas, 36 x 24 inches, $36,000

Generations, oil on canvas, 10 x 20 inches, $14,500 Mother’s Home, oil on canvas, 8 x 6 inches, $5,000

CYRUS AFSARY

The cabin is hidden away from the hustle and noise of life on the freeways and in the cities. Enjoyment is the sounds of nature, that surround the cabin within the abundance of trees. The horses and the rippling stream cascading over the rocks is an added delight to the serenity

STEVE ATKINSON

Land of the Free, oil on linen, 34 x 48 inches, $19,500

When I first conceived of the “Land of the Free”, I envisioned it with a cowboy sitting on his horse looking out over Monument Valley, but it seemed like it lacked something and didn’t tell a story. So, I thought of adding a herd of horses running toward the mounted cowboy, but that wasn’t the message I wanted to convey either. I wanted a hopeful image, something you’d want to look at every day and never get tired of. That’s when I came up with having the leader up on a hill looking out at his wild herd running toward him. They have all the room in the world, all the freedom to roam and no one telling them what to do or when to do it. I think of this painting as the ultimate freedom scene and a very uplifting one that makes me smile. I hope it does the same for you.

When the Chamisa’s In Bloom, oil on linen, 16 x 20 inches, $3,900

The Chamisa blooms profusely on the high desert at the end of a good summer. Their brilliant color appears after rains have come supplying water and forage for all the animals, including cattle, on the ranges. It is the grand finale to a wonderful season’s performance leaving us anxious to see what is yet to come.

Moose Country-Autumn, oil on canvas, 20 x 30 inches, $31,000

Autumn frost in the northern wilderness brings rich reds and yellows to the vegetation and signals the beginning of rutting season for moose. During the rut, these gentle giants become less shy, battle for dominance and focus their energy on mating. Catching sight of a magnificent bull moose, as in Moose Country Autumn, with its impressive antlers never fails to inspire awe.

BRUCE CHEEVER

Soft Light on a Promised Day, oil on board, 21 x 31 inches, $10,000

A change of season often times seems to trigger some primeval awareness that when nature gives off her subtle clues, there is no turning back. We may not want to let go of the present, or perhaps we look forward to the unknown of the future, but the one constant is, that change is always inevitable. In my painting, “Soft Light on a Promised Day,” I wanted to exude the feeling of nature’s subtle shift from a tranquil day of summer, to the first touches of autumn. Nature sends her soft warnings at first that winter lies just around the corner. Diffused light intensifies the remaining greens of the dog days of summer in the west, while at the same time autumn begins to paint its glorious cloak of color on the landscape.

River of Gold, oil on board, 17 x 21 inches, $6,000

Last LIght at Deer Camp, oil on board, 24 x 30 inches, $10,500

NICHOLAS COLEMAN

Visitors In Camp, oil on canvas, 30 x 40 inches, $14,000

Artwork really can and does bring us closer together. I absolutely love what I do each day. I feel extremely lucky to paint what I do. Finding like minded people to share my love of the outdoors, makes me quite happy! I strive to make each painting, large or small, the best it can be. There is a quote by John Muir that can sum up my feelings. “Keep close to Nature’s heart... and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean."

Camp at Long Lake oil on linen 16 x 12 inches $4,500

Brother of the Deer, oil on linen, 30 x 40 inches, $14,000

JENNESS CORTEZ

War Horse #2 Pinto, acrylic on mahogany board, 30 x 40 inches, $40,000

The horse has always had spiritual significance for human beings, all the way back to thirty thousand-year-old cave paintings. Because of its natural beauty, power and courageous spirit, the image of the horse has always found a welcoming home in our hearts and minds. I see the American Indian horse, prepared for battle, as an enduring symbol of our unwavering human drive for freedom.

JOHN DEMOTT

I have always enjoyed photographing the American bison. There is something about their size and quickness that makes them dangerous. The thrill of getting somewhat close to these magnificent animals is a rush to say the least. They are very unpredictable! Some years ago I was able to visit a bison ranch in South Dakota with several artists for a photo shoot. This is where Kevin Costner filmed the bison for his movie Dances With Wolves. The ranch has 2000 or more bison in the herd. I was able to get into one of the pens where they would run the bison down the alleyways and into the holding pens. I got some of the best running bison shots that I could ever hope for. Truly an experience I will never forget!

The American Bison was designated as the National Mammal of the United States in 2016, and embodies the resilience and strength associated with this country. These iconic bovines are the largest land animal in North America, and with their large mass, gravity and gnarly looks make great sculptural subjects.

Dusk, oil on linen, 36 x 48 inches, $30,000

With my painting “Dusk I was just trying to capture a moment in the life of the people who summered in the valley below the Tetons, in relative abundance and peace but also with cautious vigilance to the presence of the big carnivores that shared the valley and occasionally other tribes passing by. A hard earned beautiful life!

Water in all its forms fascinates me. I’ve set up my easel on countless riverbanks, beaches, and bluffs, observing the play of light on water and the illusion of transparency beneath its surface. As snow falls and the rivers slow with the freezing temperatures, water becomes like blood in our veins that still flows beneath the placid skin of ice.

Yellowstone Icon, oil on canvas, 24 x 36 inches, $7,000

A few years back I was out riding my horse in the lower meadows. In a small draw I could see a group of mares and young colts. As I drew closer, the mares noticed me and in an instant the colts jumped to their feet and exploded out of the tall grass. As they went by, I observed the reaction between one momma as she slightly turned her head toward her colt, keeping a close eye on him.

LORI FOREST

King’s Crossing, oil on linen canvas, 24 x 36 inches, $7,500

It was late summer, and we were heading into the mountains for an early start on a hike. We encountered a band of eight large bull elk in velvet at the edge of the water. The morning sun had just risen over the high ridges and was backlighting all the bulls’ antlers. It was a once in a lifetime sighting. The bulls were posturing to one another, actually sizing up their antlers. But there was one bull, by far the largest, that no other bull challenged. I painted “King’s Crossing” from that experience. The inspiration behind the composition is the inherent nobility of the animals. The light illuminating the bulls’ antlers in velvet, created the illusion of the animals being crowned in light.

The Trail to the Lake, oil on canvas, 18 x 24 inches, $11,500

Mushers on the trail – past and present – stop to cook for their dogs. Since the first bone was tossed to a wolf by a cave dweller, the contract was sealed. The wolf evolved into a partner – pulling, hunting, guarding – in exchange for food. Three of my Huskies – Hardy, Sasha and Rosemary, join professional mushing neighbor, Rick St. Onge in “Ancient Contract.” I built the lean to beside our river as a prop for this painting.

SHAWN GOULD

Catch Me If You Can, acrylic on board, 16 x 20 inches, $2,500

Clark Lake-Wind River Range, oil on panel, 40 x 48 inches, $26,500

This view of Clark Lake in the Wind River Range of Wyoming was an artist’s reward from a long horseback ride during a painting trip in August of 2019. Crossing a pass near timberline, this vantage point offers a panoramic view of the heart of the Wind River Mountains, including Gannett Peak, the highest peak in Wyoming at 13,804’. Each summer since 2012, I have ventured into the Winds to sketch and paint in the vast Bridger Wilderness of northwest Wyoming, always eager to return.

A Cowpuncher’s Paradise, oil on canvas, 34 x 52 inches, $44,000

This is the way we travel in the cow country and nothing suits a cowpuncher better than to hit a long trot across big pastures at daybreak. You can watch the world come awake and after a few miles your horse will smooth out and maybe settle in for the day’s work. There is not a house or a high line in sight. It’s pretty much paradise.

Only Apache Can Catch an Apache, oil on canvas, 24 x 36 inches, $16,000

Of the indigenous peoples native to the Southwest deserts, the Chiricahua Apache stand as the last great nomadic culture to resist abandoning their marauding way of life for reservation farming. The last and most elusive of their leaders was a mystic called by the Spanish name Geronimo. From his strongholds in the Sierra Madre and Dragoon Mountains, Geronimo’s band raided and plundered ranches on both sides of the Mexican border with impunity. Army General George Crook hired 193 Indian scouts from the San Carlos and White Mountain agencies to help track down the renegade Chiricahua on the theory that it took an Apache to catch on Apache.

BRENDA MURPHY In 1876, Texas rancher Charles Goodnight and his wife Mary Ann, (Molly), embarked upon a mission to save a dwindling herd of bison. In nearby Palo Duro Canyon, buffalo hunters shot, killed, and skinned hundreds of the adult animals every day. The small calves were left behind to fend for themselves. Molly would lay awake at night, anguishing as the orphans piteously cried out for their mothers. Convinced the species would be wiped off the earth, she urged Charles to help her save a few calves. Charles went out and returned with two orphans which Molly lovingly cared for. In the weeks that followed, they added other calves and with careful breeding established a herd of over 200 Southern Plains Bison. Over a century later the legacy of Molly’s vision has come to fruition. Recent DNA testing on descendants of the original animals reveal a genetic lineage unique to any other bison in the United States. In a fitting tribute to the Goodnights, this bull is but one of the hundreds which now thrive, and roam freely at beautiful Caprock Canyons State Park.

BILL NEBEKER

Nothing represents an image of the West like a cowboy on a bucking horse. Throughout history there have been many poems and songs written about famous bucking horses. Several hard to ride horses have been referred to as sun-fishers. The term refers to a horse whose front is going one direction, his hind quarters the opposite direction and his belly up towards the sun. Hence comes the famous title, “Sunfishin’ Son of a Gun”.

The legendary Shoshone warrior chief. One cannot overstate the greatness of the warrior called Washakie, in a time when such iconic figures such as Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull and Red Cloud were in their prime. Washakie stood above the rest. Even his enemies, the Lakota of that time, would acknowledge this. This painting includes Washakie’s actual buffalo robe which depicts him hunting buffalo.

Chiriachua Apache Deer Hunter, oil on canvas, 18 x 24 inches, $8,000

Native Voices conte chalk on stained archival paper 36 x 12 inches $3,500

I was inspired to compose this painting while I was in Colorado and storm clouds caught the sun in a “heavenly way. I saw the face in the clouds and immediately thought, Great Spirit in the Sky. I imagined these Lakota warriors being a part of the landscape, immersed in the presence of the Great Spirit and as the storm has passed, the sun begins to shine and bathes them in its warmth.

The main focus may appear to be the delightful birds, but much more is stated within these pieces beyond the ornithological creatures’ contemplative forms. It is the space around them that is key. It is our environment that supports us, gives us room to breathe, or locks us in. The use of space is integral in my work. The shadowy backgrounds center and calm the viewer, removing distractions. The negative space allows your gaze to relax and find its way through the piece, much like a goldfinch looking for seeds among tall grasses. It is the flow around the subject that draws you in, that allows you to sense what’s important.

Street of Stone, Cotswolds England, watercolor, 17 x 23 inches, $2,500

While visiting the Cotswolds in the Autumn of 2019 my architectural mind was stimulated by the forms and structures made out of Cotswold stone in Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire. It would have been impossible for me not to have painted such scenes many times over by now. This painting was meant to capture the composition of a nineteenth century street along with the strong light and color of an English Autumn morning.

Wyoming, No Glass Slippers, vessel, 18 x 18 inches, $5,000

I use traditional hand building techniques in developing my large stoneware vessels. The stories carved and sculpted on the vessels belong to intimate experiences and my own photographs and then enhanced in accuracy through research. I have managed ranches and maintained studios throughout the west. I now live and work full time out of my Sweetwater Studio in Lander, Wyoming.

The day has been coming for a long time. On one end of the street waited the law, on the other end of the street seven outlaws paced back and forth. I stood between the two loading my greener deciding which way to turn when I walked through the batwing doors. The day of reckoning has arrived.

Every spring and summer, the little Flower Carpet roses crowd around the deck and front steps of our house. But this pup is just in his first season. Everything is new - the lawn, the flowers, the tall steps. Somehow, he manages to scramble up the first one. But there’s another, then another... It’s such a familiar feeling for all of us. Isn’t it?

STEFAN SAVIDES

“Pins and Curls”, a waterfowler’s delight, gets its name from the feathers on the tails of the Mallard and Pintail depicted here. I have spent my life, focused on birds, waterfowl especially, and have found over the years that they hold a soft spot in more people’s hearts than one might realize. This piece, with its flowing reeds and its bursting flight, is a favorite amongst duck lovers and “bird folks” alike.

BRADLEY SCHMEHL

Boom Town, oil on canvas, 24 x 48 inches, $19,000

Boom Town is a generic history painting - much more about flavor than factuality. The general period is the mid to late 1890s. The gaudily ornamented locomotive featured in “Boom Town is very closely based on the Baldwin class 8/18 C 4-4-0 of the Eureka and Palisades Railroad - the only thing changed in my painting was the engine number (she is actually number 4) and the antlers added on top of the lantern. She is a grand Victorian lady of the West, and as she travelled her route in her heyday she beheld everything the West had to offer. She is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and continues to delight excursion train passengers.

Change of Fortune, oil on canvas, 24 x 36 inches, $5,000

Art is passion, and what is life without passion. In each piece I create I hope to express some of the passion I feel for the beauty and wonder of nature. My natural ability is to draw and paint realistically, so this is the way I choose to do that. I also hope that so doing my work may touch someone and give them pause to think about nature, how we are part of it and need to cherish and protect it.

SUZIE SEEREY-LESTER

While visiting a friend’s ranch, I discovered this tack room. The smell of the leather, hay and sweat of the horses played around the room. The light could only come in so far and illuminate all the wonderful saddles and tack. I added a curious fox, possibly looking at the hole in the floor. What did he see run in and hide? This tack room could be anywhere near you. In this, and in all of my paintings I have hidden my husband’s and my initials, (J+S) somewhere in the piece. See if you can find them.

KYLE SIMS

Upcoming Exhibition KYLE SIMS JOURNEY TO THE WILD September 7 – 19, 2020 Jackson, Wyoming

Yellowstone Celebrity, oil on canvas, 33 x 40 inches, $17,000

These new works, including my larger showing in September, are the culmination of new ideas and thoughts I’ve had in regards to my approach to painting over the last couple of years, combined with my greater past. I’ve been trying new approaches with the beginning of a painting and experimenting to see how that can affect the end result. My hope is that this may create a more visually interesting painting that the collector can enjoy years down the road. I also find myself looking for the abstracts one can come across in nature and improving upon them when needed. Per my own tastes, I think the highest form of visual art is when you can create a pleasing abstract within the grasps of reality.

In Tradition, oil on canvas, 20 x 26 inches, $16,000

The lady depicted in this narrative painting is a demure young Chinese woman wearing a traditional blue silk costume with embroidered gold flowers. A woman’s role in Chinese tradition is as a housewife. The early Chinese ladies in America kept the same dressing style as those from their home country.

MATT SMITH

South Mineral Creek, oil on linen mounted on board, 12 x 16 inches, $3,400

Given the long hot summers we experience here in the Sonoran Desert, a painting trip to the cool north country is always a welcome adventure. Particularly enjoyable are the trips where the autumn color is in full display. The small on-the-spot paintings completed while on these excursions are invaluable back in the studio where they aide in fueling additional ideas like “South Mineral Creek.

I am always looking forward to painting the subjects of my pieces but with this particular piece, I was equally excited to paint the water. I was so drawn to the pattern, colors and movement that it just had to be painted.

The nurturing care that a mother Grizzly provides to her cubs is tenacious. As annual seasonal changes occur, she will strategically move her young for favorable habitat and feeding. This biological impulse to survive can also be on spectacular display in swarming integrated flocks of Barn Swallows as they purse and catch small flying insects to feed their young.

Ravens have had a mystical role in many cultures, from Native Americans to the Nordic Vikings, where our main god Odin had two ravens – HUGIN and MUNIN = MIND and PASSION, as his spies and messengers. As a young man in Sweden I raised an orphan raven that kept me company for several years. Coming to this country I was fascinated to find that many Native American tribes also had a close relationship with ravens. To this day I am still enamored by the raven’s intelligence and cunning personality.

Upcoming Exhibition DUSTIN VAN WECHEL VISIONS OF THE GREAT NORTH August 10 – 22, 2020 Jackson, Wyoming

The Great North, oil on linen, 32 x 32 inches, $10,500

Alaskan moose are the largest animal I’ve ever had the pleasure of observing in the wild. And yet, they are dwarfed by the sheer scale of the Alaskan wilderness. I’d hoped with “The Great North” to communicate that sense of immensity one feels when immersed in the grandeur of the Alaskan wilds.

A range wanderer from the past rests by the peaceful banks of Coyote Creek while the keen ears of his faithful companions alert him to a possible intrusion. Set at dusk, I wanted to capture the cool of the air broken only by the warmth of lantern as it illuminates this moment from the past.

Spirit of the West, oil on canvas, 40 x 50 inches, $15,000

A view of Volcano Peak on the Nevada/Utah border. I featured the wild horses we sometimes see in the Great Basin region symbolizing the open and free nature of the area. I have long been a student of the work of Maynard Dixon, and this piece is inspired by his ability to bring the western desert to life in his work.

SARAH WOODS

The Pursuit as well as the other pieces I prepared for the online show were impacted by our ever changing COVID world. Like everyone, my first reactions as we came to grips with the seriousness of this pandemic included feelings of fear and loss. I then decided, instead of succumbing to that reality, I would look at this as an opportunity. I had long envisioned creating wildlife art with a slightly more contemporary feel using simple but strong compositions that were enhanced by a medium I first used 45 years ago—gold leaf. What I love about gold leaf is the way it can be almost silent but then a change of light or angle and it begins to sing. In this painting the gold leaf acts as symbol of what the swallows speed and agility is focused upon—what is, after all “The Pursuit”.

The Pursuit oil and gold leaf 24 x 12 inches $2,200

Aspen Gold, oil and gold leaf, 9 x 10 inches, $1,100

I will never forget the first time that I encountered an elk on the open plains. The majestic creature had raised its head towards the sunrise and let out a loud call that echoed through the crisp morning air. Since then, every time I paint elk, I am transported back to that moment and yearn to be in nature again.
