Western adventures
K
athy Wipfler’s new body of work is all about the Western landscape. “As a lifetime Westerner and 39-year resident of western Wyoming, I have lived in and observed the geology, weather, wildlife and working people of the West, working with many people involved with agriculture and wildlife. I have spent those 39 years painting the landscape and the animals from life,” says Wipfler. Her upcoming exhibition Kathy Wipfler: Pure Landscape: A Western Journey takes collectors through the adventures of her recent painting trips to Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming. The show will be held at Trailside Galleries in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, from July 1 to 13, with a reception on Saturday July 11 from 4 to 6 p.m., in which collectors can meet with the artist. “As an avid student of Western American history, I find that knowledge of the people preceding me is extremely informative to my painting process,” says Wipfler. “I have a great reverence for all who have traveled the West before me, and their writings are important to me in the large scheme of my understanding of what it took to live off the land before and soon after the luxuries brought here by the industrial age.” She cites fellow artists Bill Reese, Ned Jacob, Skip Whitcomb, Hollis Williford and Greg McHuron among her inspirations. Works in the exhibition include Colorado Gold – Dallas Divide depicting an icy mountain in striking detail in an area just west of Ridgway, Colorado, during early spring. “I prefer to paint on location then bring my photographic reference and my

studies to my studio to work up the bigger paintings. I work more from my studies than from the photos, as my studies are more interpretive and emotional than any photo,” says Wipfler. Indian Sunrise is a softer scene with skies of muted pinks, yellows and grays cast over the subtle, cooler tones of the mountain. The piece, Wipfler explains, is of a well-known mountain east of the Grand Teton in the early hours of the morning. Wipfler’s works can be found in various public and private collections, including the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming.
