Holiday Trimmings

T

railside Galleries will ring in the holidays with Deck the Walls: Holiday Miniature Show, an exhibition of new small works featuring subject matters including Western landscapes, wildlife, still life, figurative and more. Work by Z.S. Liang, Kathleen Dunphy, Shawn Gould, Ken Carlson, Morgan Weistling and Mian Situ, among many others, will be featured. Dunphy’s Wyoming Aspen depicts the Jackson Hole, Wyoming, landscape at the peak of summer. “The hillsides were every imaginable shade of green and wildflowers blanketed the meadows in impossible quantity and variety,” she describes. “Standing in an aspen grove on an idyllic summer morning and painting Wyoming Aspen, the scene before me seemed almost too beautiful to be true.” Blackfoot Brave, by Liang, features a Native man outfitted for war, galloping swiftly toward his enemy, ready to face off. The image was captured a few years ago during a modeling session near Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, when Liang was working on a large painting project. Carlson’s entry is a wildlife work titled Lioness and Cubs. He says, “We were out looking for lions and found a big male with lionesses and cubs. The male lion was resting and I found it most enjoyable watching the interaction of the lioness and her cubs which inspired this painting.” Gould’s Powder and Fluff was painted last fall after the first heavy snow of the year. “I headed out to take some reference photos,” he says. “This little chipmunk was busy trying to find food for the long winter ahead. I had fun watching it scurry around and explore every nook and branch looking for anything that wasn’t buried in the snow.” Deck the Walls will be on view December 3 through 15, and a festive holiday reception takes place December 15 from 4 to 6 p.m.
