CELEBRATING SUCCESSES & SHARING STORIES
CELEBRATING SUCCESSES & SHARING STORIES
This edition is dedicated to all our Foundation Scholars: current students, recent graduates and alumni. The Foundation currently is supporting and mentoring three first-year and five second-year Radiologic Technology students. Additionally, we are excited to congratulate five graduates in the Class of 2024—three Radiologic Technology and two Diagnostic Medical Sonography scholars who graduated June 15, 2024. Recipients of the TRA Medical Imaging Foundation scholarships are chosen based on financial need and career aspirations.
The program is dedicated to supporting students facing financial constraints while also providing mentorship to help them achieve their professional goals and aspirations. This involves connecting students with experienced technologists, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals who offer resources, ongoing support, guidance, and accountability.
Your help and generosity allows the Foundation to expand its programs— our overarching goal is to broaden educational offerings and opportunities in Imaging Sciences, to include X-Ray, Sonography, CT, MR, and Mammography. By doing so, we aim to generate employment, address workforce shortages, and enhance the quality of healthcare services in our community. Thank you for your help.

“Our community is currently facing a critical shortage in the healthcare workforce. In 2023, healthcare, educational, and local government leaders convened to address this urgent issue.
Despite doubling the enrollment capacity of our Radiologic Technologist program from 24 to 48 students, there remains a pressing need to further expand student capacity and increase opportunities in advanced modalities such as Mammography, CT, and MRI. Additionally, we aim to develop bridging programs to facilitate high school graduates’ entry into these fields.
The TRA Foundation has been a pivotal partner in this collaboration with TCC, aligning with our mission to break down barriers for students and provide workforce development opportunities. Currently, the foundation offers financial scholarships to 9-12 TCC students annually, with a goal to increase this support by 25% each year.”
Ivan Harrell, Ph.D. President, Tacoma Community CollegeSecond year students are immersed in full-time clinical rotations to gain experience working in a variety of settings. Healthcare providers in Pierce, Kitsap, Lewis and Thurston counties partner with TCC to afford students excellent clinical opportunities to practice their skills and develop a solid understanding of the life as an imaging technologist. Scholars work within their respective fields in clinical settings with the opportunity to be introduced to multiple modalities. From the emergency room to the operating room, to outpatient clinics, students gain patient experience and knowledge to succeed in the field. These second-year Scholars are planning to graduate in June 2025, sit for the certification exam in the fall of 2025, and ultimately be working full-time as professional imaging technologists.
Alexie, a second-year student the Radiologic Technologist Program at Tacoma Community College, embarked on her journey into healthcare imaging while working as a patient transporter at Good Samaritan Hospital. This role provided her with a firsthand encounter with various modalities, including ultrasound, interventional radiology, CT, X-ray, MRI, and nuclear medicine. Motivated by a desire to instigate positive change, Alexie aspires to embody leadership, teamwork, integrity, and a positive attitude in her daily impact. Her high-school experience as a team captain in basketball and fastpitch, along with her role as a class officer throughout all four years, has equipped her with valuable leadership skills. Eager to broaden her knowledge, Alexie looks forward to the mentoring opportunities offered by the TRA Medical Imaging Foundation Scholarship program. Her proactive approach involves asking insightful questions to enhance her learning experience. Additionally, she expresses interest in pursuing the accelerated CT program at TCC, showcasing her dedication to continuous learning and professional development.
Chandler, a second-year student in the Radiologic Technologist Program at Tacoma Community College, had a unique entry into the world of healthcare imaging. Following a literal leap out of bed that resulted in a snapped bone, emergency surgery, and the addition of a titanium rod and screws, Chandler found himself on the other side of healthcare as a patient. This experience granted him a fresh perspective on patient care, diagnostic tests, healthcare professionals, and imaging scans. The turning point occurred when a radiologic technologist took X-rays of Chandler‘s leg, sparking his fascination with the field. Despite graduating from the University of Washington with a bachelor’s degree in Medical Anthropology and Global Health, Chandler realized that his career trajectory lacked the upward growth he desired. During his medical leave, Chandler delved into the radiologic science program, conducted extensive research, enrolled in prerequisite classes, and nine months later, secured acceptance into the Imaging Sciences program at TCC. This journey reflects his commitment to redirecting his career towards a path that aligns with his goals of professional advancement and personal fulfillment.
Erika, a second-year student in the Radiologic Technologist Program at Tacoma Community College, discovered her passion for radiology while working in food services and later advancing to a Mental Health Technician role at Western State Hospital in Lakewood, WA. This experience allowed her to closely observe various modalities, fostering her interest in the dynamic field. Amidst her educational journey, Erika excelled and proudly graduated with honors, earning her Associates of Applied Science in Allied Health. A first-generation college graduate, she crossed the stage with her four children, including twin toddlers, witnessing her achievement. Erika emphasizes the transformative impact of the TRA Medical Imaging Foundation Scholarship, citing both financial support and mentorship as life-changing. The scholarship‘s mentorship component is particularly valuable to Erika, offering access to an accomplished network that will provide guidance and share invaluable knowledge and experiences.
Katlen, a secon-year student in the Radiologic Technologist Program at Tacoma Community College, discovered her calling in imaging sciences through a deeply personal experience. Influenced by her sister‘s rare genetic disorder, which required extensive imaging scans, Kate was profoundly impressed by the skill and compassion of radiology technologists involved in her sister‘s care. What sets Kate apart is her journey as a first-generation college graduate, adding a unique dimension to her pursuit of a career in healthcare. Inspired by the excellent care her sister received, Kate is excited to utilize her skills not only to contribute to the field but also to make a positive impact on patients and their families. With a vision for the future, Kate aspires to become the kind of radiologic technologist who inspires the next generation, mirroring the positive influence she experienced during her sister‘s medical journey.
Sebastiano, a second-year student in the Radiologic Technologist Program at Tacoma Community College, has a unique journey—from Costa Rica to Canada during high school and finally settling in the United States. His bilingual proficiency led him to work as a medical interpreter, where he discovered the vital role of clear communication in healthcare. While having the unique opportunity to observe imaging technologists up close, this experience became his „aha“ moment, inspiring a career path in radiologic science. Sebastiano aims to build a strong foundation in radiologic science with an eventual specialization in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). His dedication to this field stems from recognizing the transformative power of language in healthcare settings. By leveraging his insights into imaging modalities, Sebastiano envisions contributing his skills to the nuanced realm of medical imaging, embodying his commitment to advancing within the industry.

There is community and political pressure to aggressively address the workforce shortage of imaging technologists in our area. TRA Medical Imaging Foundation is taking steps with the generous help of our donors to make an impact. The consequences of not expanding include lack of timely and equitable access to medical imaging services for the diverse communities in Washington State. The goal of the Foundatin is to continue to increase opportunity for people pursuing a career in imaging sciences that affords a livable wage without years of school and debt. The Foundation almuni are all currrently employed and can be proud of their work in the field.
