TECH
RING & PINION TECH If you have made any significant upgrades to your vehicle, you may want to consider taking a closer look at your drive train components. With increases in horsepower, torque & tire diameters, some of the factory components are not up to the task that they were originally designed for, and are at risk of failing. There are also performance gains that can be made that are often overlooked. For performance and fuel economy, the first items you need to consider are your ring & pinion gears. These are the gears that redirect the torque from the driveshaft to the axle shafts. They also provide gear reduction, giving you the opportunity to optimize your drive ratio to gain performance and improve gas mileage lost by oversized tires. By replacing you current ring & pinion(s) with the proper ratio to accommodate your tire size, you will be running your engine at the optimum RPM. This allows your engine and transmission to work together for maximum efficiency. Follow our Gear Ratio Guide to select the proper ratio for you driving needs. If you drive your vehicle in rough terrain and find you self needing more traction, you will need to consider upgrading your differential. From the factory most vehicles are equipped with open type differentials that work great for daily driving, but lack the needed traction on loose surfaces. There are many options as to upgrading to a traction devise such as a LSD (Limited Slip Differential) or a Locker. They all have their own benefits depending on the terrain and the type of driving you plan on doing. With either choice, you will be able to transfer more of power to the ground, rather than let your tires spin in on spot. You can look at our Differential Guide to decide what kind of traction device best suits your driving habits. If you have made the suggested upgrades and increased you power & traction, then you need to consider upgrading your axle shafts to handle the extra load. The factory shafts were never designed to handle the extreme loads of high horsepower engines, oversized tires & aggressive traction devices. By upgrading to axles that were manufactured with better materials, and engineered to handle the added load, you prevent catastrophic failures that result from failed axle shafts.

Tire Diameter
Whenever you change tire size from the original size or from one size to another, this will have a direct effect on power and drivability. The chart below will help you to select the optimum gear ratio to bring the power and torque back to where you want them. Using the chart, first determine what your original gear ratio and tire size are then follow the lines to find your approximate RPM at 65 MPH. Next find the new tire size on the left of the chart and look across to find the RPM closest to your original, the ratio listed at the top of that column will be your first choice for ratio. If you are interested in a change that will give more power or better mileage use the shaded coding as a guide.
This chart is based on 65 MPH and a 1:1 gear ratio, on a manual transmission (4th gear). Please NOTE: if your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission the true RPM will be higher than shown on the chart, because some slippage will occur in the transmission and torque converter. With overdrive transmission, your RPM in overdrive will be 15-30% less than indicated, depending on vehicle.

NOTE: Bearings are a wear item, and thus we strongly recommend replacing them when installing a new ring & pinion set. We offer Master Overhaul Kits that include all the necessary items to set up a ring and pinion including carrier & pinion bearings. For newer vehicles, or vehicles that have been recently serviced, we also offer installation kits that include all the items of our Master Overhaul Kits, less the bearings.
THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME GUIDES TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR DRIVE TRAIN DECISION HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR AXLE HOUSING First you need to identify the axle model and gear ratio that are currently installed in your vehicle. Every vehicle has different options that determine the type of axle assembly and ratio available for any particular vehicle, and this information is imperative to find the correct parts. You can use the chart on page as a guide to the common assemblies for your vehicle. We strongly recommend that you visually identify your axle assembly. The following are some guides to help identify the model. Also, the catalog pages have images such as the differential cover outline to help confirm your selection.
HOW TO IDENTIFY A SPICER AXLE All Spicer Carrier Type axles are identified with a manufacturing date (1) and a Bill of Materials number (2) stamped on the axle tube to the right of the differential cover. The axle model number will be cast into one of the webs as shown (3), or it can be on the nose. Each axle contains a gear ratio tag (4), and if the axle is equipped with limited slip differential, it will have a tag specifying the type of limited slip lubricant to be used (5).
BILL OF MATERIALS The diagram to the right shows the location of the different I.D. numbers that will ensure that you get the right parts for your axle. The Bill of Materials number (2) is crucial for certain parts. Be sure to have this number handy when ordering parts. If the Bill of Materials number is covered in grease or dirt, do NOT clean with a wire brush. This could remove the numbers and make identifying the axle nearly impossible. DIFFERENTIAL TECH HOW TO CHOOSE THE APPROPRIATE DIFFERENTIAL Your differential transmits the power to the axle shafts, while allowing the wheels to rotate at different speeds since they travel different paths as a vehicle turns. The standard Open Differential works great for this application, but has its shortcomings when comes to off road and performance driving. To remedy this, there are different options such as Limited Slip Differential, Lockers & Spools. They each have their advantages for different driving conditions. The following guide will help you decide which kind of differential works best for your driving needs.

OFF-ROAD
Open Differential Open differential are supplied from the factory in most applications, and leave a lot to be desired when it comes to traction.  An open differential uses a series of side gears & spider gears to transmit power to the axle shafts. The drawback is that if one tire loses traction, all of the available power goes to that one tire. To aid in the loss of traction, different levels of traction aids are available such as limited slips, lockers, and spools.

PERFORMANCE RATING CHART
A limited slip is very similar to an open differential, but with the addition of friction clutches to distribute a percentage of power to the axle with the most traction when traction is lost on one axle. This makes it suitable for daily driving on pavement, and gives you a little extra traction when needed.

These units merge the benefits of an open differential with the strength and traction of a spool. Their locking action is controlled by the driver to best suit the driving conditions. TOWING

Automatic lockers transmit power through a set of automatic locking dog clutches. These units keep both axles locked together and spinning at the same speed. As the unit senses the vehicle going around a corner the engagement teeth unlock allowing the tires to rotate at different speeds. These units are recommended for extreme off road use.

DIFFERENTIAL AND DIFFERENT OPTIONS IN TRACTION As you negotiate a corner, the outer tire on your vehicle needs to travel a longer distance than your inner tire, thus traveling at a higher speed. The differential in your vehicle serves the purpose of allowing your tires to rotate at different speeds independently for better handling

Spools and mini spools replace the differential action and connect both axles securely. This way equal power is applied to both tires at all times. This lends itself to poor handling characteristics on high traction surfaces and is recommended for off road use only.

ARB’s revolutionary differential design uses compressed air to turn a smooth open differential into a fully locked unit. Working with an ARB on board compressor, this unit gives you smooth street operation with total off road traction and durability at the touch of a button. Great for the serious Off-Roader who also likes to drive on road.
G2 limited slip DIFFERENTIALS deliver increased traction over conventional open differentials. These units are ideal for applications were added traction is needed without adverse handling characteristics associated with lockers.

LOCKER ON DEMAND Provides the highest amount of traction available and will never let a wheel stop turning! No parts to wear out and no special lubricants required!
High-Tech aerospace engineering with no castings or stamped steel components. The Ox uses a single aircraft quality cable to engage from an open differential to a fully locked unit with a shift of a lever. Super high quality material built for maximum durability. Less is more, no air lines to leak, no wires to short out.
Improved design, performs like standard open differential in normal driving until you need it! Limits wheel spin on wet, muddy and icy terrain for maximum traction. Dependable rugged automatic system. No special lubricants. No friction plates to wear out. Easy to install, no special tools or case modifications.
If you need proven reliable limited slip traction, Auburn Gear has you covered. OEM quality with After market performance. Whether it’s the reliable “High Performance Series” Or the Unbeatable “Pro Series” Auburn’s patented Cone shaped side gear puts traction to the ground in a smooth seamless package.
ECTED
The Eaton Posi is an ideal way to gain traction in trucks that see mild off road use or need added traction due to performance enhancements. With carbon disc clutch packs, preloaded by a central spring assembly, the Eaton Posi delivers chatter free transfer of power to both tires while maintaining a mild on road handling characteristic.
The ECTED is a selectable traction device. When “off” – the clutch pack, which is located behind the side gear provides the limited slip mode. As torque increases, the separating forces within the differential gears increase, causing the clutch pack to be compressed and thereby providing bias torque to the high traction wheel – your performance limited slip differential action. When selected “on”, current is sent to the electromagnetic coil. The coil is retained by a clip that fits over one of the bearing cap bolts, making it non-rotational. The coil rides on a ball bearing. The ball bearings spin with the differential case.
The Eaton Elocker differential’s electromagnetic locking mechanism is the next generation of aftermarket ifferential technology. Its ease of installation, reliability and push-button activation delivers smooth and consistent performance. The Elocker differential is an absolute must for all towing and off-road performance applications.
For traction output, strength, and durability, the POWERTRAX Locker provides performance on par with its more expensive, competing lockers that are sold only as complete case replacement assemblies. Easily installed into existing case assemblies, the POWERTRAX Locker is widely regarded a premium Jeep locker to be used in demanding off-road situations. For severe driving conditions or extreme off-roading, the POWERTRAX Locker will give you the traction you need.
The Powertrax Lock-Right Locker is the original locking differential that could be easily installed in existing case assemblies without any special tools or setup equipment. It has been widely used in demanding off-road applications around the world requiring extreme traction output and high-strength.

TECH
AXLE TECH HOW TO SELECT THE APPROPRIATE AXLE SHAFT The main purpose of the axle shaft is to transmit the torque from the differential to the wheel. In some applications such as a Semi Float Axle, it bears the load of the vehicle weight as well. Factory axles are designed to handle the load based on the GVW of the vehicle. When the load increases due to larger tires, performance upgrades and traction devises, the factory shafts often fail leaving the vehicle inoperable. There are many aftermarket options available that remedy this weakness by the use of stronger materials, better manufacturing processes, and physical upgrades such as larger diameter shafts. Through the catalog you will find axle kits designed to specifically address the weakness of each particular application.

TECH TIPS Check Bolts For Stretch Believe it or not bolts do stretch, many times a bolt will give the allusion of torqueing to speck but it is actually bottomed out in the threads or locking up due to poor fit. The simplest way to check this is to get a standard none locking type nut and thread it on with you fingers. The nut should go on with out fighting or sticking. If it fights check the threads, although hard to see they will have an hourglass look to them. This bolt will have to be replaced. Be sure to get the same length and grade bolt. Failure to get a weaker bolt can cause a catastrophic failure.

Make Sure Bearings Are Fully Seated Before installing bearings and races inspect bearing bores for damage. Many times with out even noticing there is damage from driving out the races. Be sure to grind down all raised surfaces no matter how irrelevant you think they are. Make sure you fully press all bearing down till they fully seated. Failing to seat the bearings and races properly will give you incorrect pinion depth and preload readings. Worse yet once you set it up and get that perfect pattern, as soon as you put power to the differential everything changes once the bearing is seated. Don’t be in a rush to finish not paying attention to details like this can cost you more aggravation in the long run.
Ford TTB IFS Front Axles When installing a aftermarket differential on Ford vehicles equipped with a Twin Traction Beam Independent Axle you may need to make a minor modification to your passenger side axle assembly to accommodate a differential that doesn’t have a C Clip provision. This modification will require you to acquire a small spring from either a engine shop or hardware store. Start by marking the shafts so you know how there were orientated, remove the dust boot and pull the axle apart. If equipped with a plus at the end of the yoke punch it out and discard it. Insert the spring and reassemble the axle. When assembled ensure that the spring holds the inner axle firmly ageist the cross pin of the differential. Proper Use Of Silicone GO EASY WITH IT!!!! One of the easiest ways to ruin all your hard work and expensive parts is to be overzealous with the silicone. All you ever need is a 1/16” bead to the inside of the boltholes on your differential cove to seal it with out a gasket. If you are using a gasket and silicone you only need to add a super thin film of silicone to both sides of the gasket. By using too much it will squish out on the inside of the differential and over time it will break off and get lodged in the bearings and lock them up. On a seal you only need a thin film as well.
Pinion Depth Tools Most people are unwilling to spend the money to buy a proper pinion depth tools. It seems that most tools only work on 1 of 2 axles only and you will need to buy a collection of different tools to do just one truck. A lot of people will try using the plats of the bearing cap as point of reference to measure pinion depth from. Although this is fairly close it is not totally accurate. This point of measure can still be .005-.010 off due to machining tolerances. When the housing is machined the flats are machined then the bearing journal is machined. The journal can be machined slightly off centerline of the tools flats. The proper way to measure is with a tool that sits in the bearing saddles and measures off the true center. The pattern method is a little more time consuming but equally effective in achieving a proper pattern. Many gear manufactures have even stopped putting pinion depth markings on their gears. This has made pinion depth tools all but useless. 9” Case Clearance Many times on the Ford 9 inch the ring gear will contact the pinion pilot bearing support housing depending what gear ratio you are using. Many gear manufactures cut a bevel on the inside of the ring gear to clear the housing. Ford cut a small notch in the case on housing that came with 4.10 gears and lower. If your case is a high gear case additional clearance will be necessary even with the cut gears. Be very careful when grinding that you do not make the case thinner that 1/8 inch or it will crack. Use the ring gear mounted on the carrier with no pinion installed to help mark the case. Simply spin the ring gear by hand and move it over using the spanners until it contacts the case. You will know have a guide of were to grind. If excessive clearance is required it would be better to have the gear machined. Be sure to blend the notch nicely leaving no sharp edges and clean the case thoroughly before assembly.

TECH TIPS
Cross Pin Clearance On Many differential that require removal of cross pin to insert axle shafts we run into a problem with the cross pin hitting the ring gear when we go to some lower gears. On these applications we can get away with simply grinding a small amount of material off the opposing gear tooth. This will not affect the integrity of the gear. When you achieve a proper gear pattern you will not even use that portion of the gear. On other gear sets that are really low you may not be able to grind enough gear away to clear there are special modified cross pins. These pins are not recommended in all but in extreme cases as they are weaker and have been known to fail on occasion.

102 Spare The Lock-Tite Thread locking compounds are a good thing if used in moderation. Using excessive amounts make a mess and once dried will dry to a crystal like material, which can lock up bearings. Using the correct type in the correct place is important as well. The Red is meant to be a permanent locking which will sometimes require heat to break loose. This is good for ring gear bolts and pinion nuts. The Blue is semi permanent and is good for carrier cap bolts and cross pin retainer bolts. The green is made for penetrating and is good for bearing races but rarely found. The key to using these adhesives (yes Adhesives) is that the threads must be clean and dry. Use brake cleaner or quick start to insure a clean surface. If its not clean the adhesive will not work and you wasted your time and money on it. Set Up Bearings Set up bearings are a useful tool for those that are starting from scratch with no previous shims to reference off. In a differential that has shims under the bearings, you will have to press the bearings on and off each time you need to make a change. This can be a real inconvenience if you have to run to the machine shop each time to get the bearings pressed. Another potential problem with pressing the bearings is that sometimes they get damaged easily. Set up bearings are a special bearing that has little to no press fit and can be removed by hand. Pinion hits Carrier On a number of differential there have been design changes for on reason or another that are not spoken about. On some differential when an aftermarket locker is installed there is limited space and may interfere with the pinion. This problem is easily corrected by removing a small amount of material off the tip of the pinion head. This will not affect the integrity of the gear. When you achieve a proper gear pattern you will not even use that portion of the gear.
Paint The Inside? You will see a lot of shops painting the inside of a differential and think why bother nobody ever sees it? While the paint may look good it serves another function. When a differential experiences a failure it produces extremely fine metal fragments like dust. Even though you cleaned the differential out these particles sit in the pores of the casting and get released when the metal heats up contamination the new oil. That is part of the reason that it is so important to change the oil after break in. The use of epoxy paint will seal all the particles under the paint preventing the oil contamination and it looks good to. It is also believed that the paint aids in oil return. Save The Crush Sleeves Not only are Crush Sleeves expensive and a lot of work to crush, they are also a one time use part. To save money and speed up the set up operation don’t use the sleeve until you have established your shim settings. If you crush the sleeve and then add pinion shim the crush sleeve is useless and will need to be replaced. To solve this problem leave the sleeve out and tighten the used pinion nut slowly until you get the appropriate pinion drag. You cannot leave it like this but its fine for the setup. After you have established a proper pattern disassemble the differential, clean everything again, oil the bearings and install crush sleeve for final assembly. That Baffling Slinger Thing On many differential they used slingers on the pinion head and baffles behind the races. These thin pieces of metal are used to help control oil flow in the differential. Many of these have been deemed irrelevant by the manufactures and are no longer available. If your axle has them reuse them. If yours has been damaged and you cannot find them you must make up the difference with pinion shim. Anything places between the bearing and the pinion adds to the total shim pack.

INSTALLATION
RING & PINION INSTALLATION Please read completely before beginning. By following these instructions carefully, you will achieve proper set up. We have successfully set up thousands of differential without using a pinion depth setting tool. We sincerely hope that these instructions are helpful. Tool List When working on your differential you will need a wide variety of tools. Using the correct tools saves time and helps prevent parts from being damaged. Here is a list of some of the tools that you may need: Remember these instructions are generalized, Always refer to service manual for further instruction and specifications!

103
•Dial indicator and mounting base •Gear marking compound and a clean brush •Calipers or a micrometer •Bearing pullers •Bearing press •Three foot long breaker bar or strong impact gun •Pinion nut socket
•Ring gear bolt socket •Carrier cap bolt socket •Six point cross pin bolt wrench •Brake line wrench •Pry bars for removing the carrier case •24 oz ball peen hammer •48 oz plastic dead blow hammer
•Assorted brass punches •Number or letter punches for marking carrier caps •Oil drain pan •Foot pounds torque wrench •Inch pounds torque wrench •Service Manual
Disassembly: Make sure that you have all the parts and tools you will need. The extent of disassembly depends on the job being done and the inspection findings. Lift the vehicle using an appropriate lift or a jack and safe jack stands. Always make certain that the vehicle is safely supported before working underneath. Unbolt the driveshaft from the yoke. Remove the differential cover or unbolt the third member. Let the oil drain into a suitable container. Please recycle your waste oil.
Front Axle Removal:
Solid Axle Type: Remove wheel, locking hub assembly, brake caliper and hub & rotor assembly. You will now need to remove the spindle and backing plate to gain access to the axle shaft. Remove axle shaft by sliding it out through the steering knuckle. Now is a great time to repack wheel bearings and spindle bearing. Inspect ball joints or king pins for wear and service axle u-joint. I.F.S. Axle Type: For non-locking hub type, Remove wheel brake caliper, cotter pin and the large axle nut. Using a drift punch and hammer drive the axle shaft out of the wheelbearing. Remove the bolts retaining the axle to the drive flange. Remove the differential assembly from vehicle. For locking hub type refer to the solid axle instructions and then remove third member. Due to the varying types of I.F.S. axles on the market please refer to your vehicle service manual
Semi Float Rear Axles:
“C” Clip Type: Remove The Wheel and brake drum. Remove the axles by removing the differential cross pin bolt and cross pin shaft. Push the axles in allowing the C clip to be exposed from the side gear. Many times the clip will just fall out or may need coaxing. After removal of the C clip slide the axle out being cautious not to get any oil on the brake shoes. Bolt In Type: Remove The Wheel and brake drum. Either behind the axle flange or on the backside of the brake backing plate there are usually 4 bolts. Simply remove the backing plate bolts and slide the axle (many times with the backing plate) out of the housing end being cautious not to get oil on the brake shoes. Full Floating Rear Axles: Full float axles do not require the removal of the wheel or brakes, simply unbolt the shaft from the hub and slide it out, be careful there will be oil. Carrier Removal: Punch both carrier caps with identification marks so that you will be able to re-install them on the same side and in the same direction. Most carriers can be pried out of the housing with a pry bar. Keep track of the location and thickness of all of the original shims. Carrier bearings can be pulled using a bearing puller. Internal parts (inside the carrier) can be removed as necessary Further disassembly depends on the job being done. Pinion Removal: If you’re changing the ring and pinion or the pinion bearings, remove the pinion nut with an air gun while holding the yoke, or use a long breaker bar and brace the yoke (bolt it to a long board) so that it can’t move. Knock the pinion gear out to the rear with a brass punch, taking care not to damage the threads. Keep track of the location and thickness of all of the original shims. Remove the pinion seal and outer pinion bearing. Using a blunt punch drive the bearing races from the housing. Pinion bearings must be pressed off. Assembly Differential Adjustments The four essential differential adjustments are pinion depth, pinion bearing preload, backlash and carrier bearing preload. Preparing Parts: Clean all new and used parts with clean solvent or brake cleaner. You cannot make it too clean, Dry the parts. De-burr the back of the ring gear and carrier mounting surface with a file or wet stone. Wash out the housing with solvent and check all of the oil passages for metal particles or dirt that can lead to bearing damage. Many housings have oil passages to the pinion and grooves just outside of the carrier bearings. Push rags through the axle tubes, using solvent or brake cleaner until they are clean. Polish all seal surfaces with light emery cloth and then wipe them with a clean rag and clean oil or solvent to remove metal particles. Use a moderate coat of gear oil (not grease!) on all bearings and grease (not oil) on all seals and seal surfaces just prior to final installation. Initial Assembly Pinion depth shims go either under the inner pinion race or on the pinion shaft under the inner pinion bearing. The diameter of your shims will determine where they go. Try using the original shim depth for your first attempt. The inner pinion bearing must be pressed on the pinion shaft and the pinion races must be tapped into the housing with a large punch or race driver until they are seated evenly. Install the outer bearing and carefully tap the pinion seal in place with an old race. Ford 8” and 9”, and GM 10.5” and 12.25” use a pilot bearing which must be tapped in, with a retainer for the Fords. Mount the ring gear to the carrier with a drop of red Loctite on each bolt. Carrier bearings are pressed on the carrier and secured with green Loctite. Do not use the Loctite on Dana Spicer differential until final assembly, as the carrier shims go between the carrier and carrier bearings. Again, try using the original shim configuration. Install Pinion Gear and Set Pinion Bearing Preload: Pinion bearing preload is measured in inch-pounds, and is a measure of the rolling resistance of the pinion bearings after proper torque has been applied to the pinion nut. Set the preload carefully (see “Set Up Specifications”) so that the bearings will have a long life. Use oil on the pinion nut washer surface during all assemblies and red Loctite on the pinion nut threads during the final assembly.

Crush Sleeve Design: If you are unsure about getting the correct pinion depth, it may be easier to install the pinion without a crush sleeve until the correct pinion depth has been established while always maintaining proper pinion drag. Use the original nut during the crushing process with a little oil on the threads. Always use a new crush sleeve and new pinion nut for final assembly. Slide the crush sleeve on the pinion shaft (unless you are using the trial and error method) and install the pinion through the rear of the housing. The yoke usually must be tapped on while applying pressure on the pinion gear head to hold it in place. Use an impact wrench or huge breaker bar to apply the torque necessary to crush the sleeve. Proceed very slowly so that you don’t overload the bearings. The pinion preload will be zero until the bearings contact the races but will then increase very quickly. Use an inch-pound torque wrench to check the preload. If the pinion bearing preload exceeds the specified allowable range, install another new crush sleeve and start over.
Preload Shim Design: Clean the shims completely so that there are no particles that may cause a false preload reading or cause the shim stack to change thickness over time as the vehicle is driven. Slide the shim pack over the pinion shaft to the shelf. Use the original shims on the first assembly or add 0.003” to the original preload shims to make up for the bearings settling into the housing. Tighten the pinion nut to approximately 250 foot pounds. Go slowly so as not to damage the bearing if the preload shim stack is not thick enough. Use an inch-pound torque wrench to check the preload. If the preload is too loose then remove shims so that the bearings will be tighter against the races and increase the preload. If the preload is too tight then remove the pinion gear and add shims so that the bearings will not be as tight against the races. Always use a new pinion nut with Loctite on the final assembly. If you don’t have any preload shims to start with, measure the pinion depth shims and start there. All Designs: After reaching the correct preload, moderately tap both ends of the pinion to seat the bearings, races and yoke. Be careful not to hit the pinion so hard that it damages the bearings. After “seating” the pinion, check the pinion bearing preload again. Install Carrier and Adjust Carrier Preload and Backlash Carrier bearing preload is not specifically measured, but a good tight fit is important in all differential designs. Inadequate carrier bearing preload allows the carrier to move when under load and this can cause the backlash to open up. Check the backlash by mounting a dial indicator to the housing with the plunger set perpendicular to the ring gear teeth. Hold the pinion yoke and rock the ring gear back and forth. See the specifications section. The backlash will generally change about 0.007” for each 0.010” that the carrier is moved. To decrease the backlash, move the carrier closer to the pinion centerline. To increase the backlash, move the carrier away from the pinion centerline. Screw Adjuster Design: Oil the adjuster threads on both the housing and on the adjusters themselves. While holding the races on the bearings, place the carrier in the housing. Install the carrier caps according to the marks made during disassembly so that the threads are seated evenly on the adjusters. Third member differential designs require a 10 to 12 inch spanner wrench to tighten the adjusters. Chrysler differential designs require an extension bar and special spanner to access the adjusters through the axle tubes. Tighten both the left and right adjusters evenly by hand until they are fairly tight. If the backlash is too wide, tighten the left adjuster until the backlash is correct. If the backlash is too tight, tighten the right adjuster until the backlash is correct. If necessary, open one adjuster and tighten the other. Both adjusters must be fully hand tightened when acceptable backlash is obtained. The final adjustment should tighten the left adjuster since the ring gear is forced away from the pinion gear while under load. Shim Design: Some differential use shims between the carrier bearing races and the housing and some use shims between the carrier bearing and the carrier case. Carrier bearing preload is established by the tightness of the shims. The carrier should be shimmed tight enough that it must be tapped in with a plastic dead blow hammer. While holding the races on the bearings (and outside shims on the races) start the carrier into the housing and tap it in with the hammer. Install the carrier caps according to the marks made during disassembly. Check the backlash. If the backlash is too wide, move or add shims to the left side. If the backlash is too tight, move or add shims to the right side. (If the carrier is snug, move and replace the same thickness; if the carrier is too tight or too loose, remove or add shims accordingly.) Checking the Pattern Check the pattern for proper pinion depth only after setting the backlash. Brush three or four of the ring gear teeth with a moderate coat of gear marking compound in two different places on the ring gear. Rotate the ring gear past the pinion gear three or four times and then back so the pattern can be seen. Pinion depth is indicated by the position of the pattern between the face and flank of the ring gear teeth. Backlash must be kept within specifications, and will therefore only slightly affect the pattern between the heel and toe of the ring gear teeth. Housing alignment and pinion bearing bore alignment can also affect the pattern from heel to toe and cannot be corrected without machine work. In some cases an ideal heel to toe pattern cannot be achieved. If the backlash is within specifications, you may disregard the heel to toe pattern. A contact pattern that is centered from face to flank always indicates correct pinion depth even if a pattern that is centered from heel to toe cannot be obtained. If the contact pattern is towards the face of the ring gear teeth then the pinion is too far away from the ring gear. Adjust the pinion shims to move the pinion gear towards the ring gear centerline (add shims; subtract shims for pinion support designs). If the contact pattern is towards the flank of the ring gear teeth then the pinion is too close to the ring gear. Adjust the pinion shims to move the pinion gear away from the ring gear centerline(subtract shims; add shims for pinion support designs). When changing the pinion depth, make large changes (0.005” to 0.015”) until the pattern is close. By making adjustments that move the pinion too far, you can determine that the correct pattern is somewhere between the two extremes. Then make smaller changes (0.002” to 0.004”) until the pattern is centered between the face and the flank of the ring gear teeth. When setting up a used ring & pinion, pay more attention to the pattern on the coast side of the ring gear teeth and pay less attention to the drive side. Low mileage gears should be patterned as if new. Gear Oil, Additive and Break-In Use a gasket or 100% silicone to seal the cover or third member to the housing. Use only high quality name brand gear oil and fill the differential until the oil spills out the plug hole. Positraction carriers require anti-friction additive that must be installed first before filling with oil. All new gear sets require a break-in period to prevent damage from overheating. After driving the first 15 or 20 miles you must let the differential cool for 30-40 minutes before proceeding. Drive 500 easy miles before towing. Tow for very short distances (less than 15 miles) and let the differential cool before continuing during the first 45 towing miles. Change the gear oil after the first 500 miles. This will remove any metal particles or phosphorus coating that has come from the new gear set. ANY OVERLOADING OR OVERHEATING CAN CAUSE THE GEAR OIL TO BREAKDOWN AND THE RING & PINION CAN FAIL.

Axle ShaftAn Axle Shaft is the part of an axle assembly that is turned by the side gear of the differential and transfers the power to either the wheel directly or the wheel hub that the wheel is bolted to depending on the style of axle.
ConcaveAn Inward curving surface like a bowl. ConvexAn Outward curving surface like a crown.
Ball JointBall joints connect the steering knuckle to the axle housing or arms and hold it In position while allowing the steering motion. BanjoA Banjo refers to the type of axle housing that utilizes a drop out third member. BearingA Bearing provides a low friction surface allowing two parts to move on one another on a single axis.
“C Clip-” “C” clips are commonly used on Semi Floating axles to retain the axle shaft. On the splined of the axle shaft there is a receiver grove cut into the end of the shaft for the C clip to grab the axle. In the side gear of the carrier there is a pocket machined in to the gear that the OD of the C clip fits into. With the cross shaft removed the axle is inserted into the side gear. At this point the C clip is placed onto the shaft and the shaft is pulled out until the clip is seated into the pocket. Now the cross shaft is reinserted and the axle can no longer move in or out except for its appropriate end play.
CaliperReferred to as brake caliper Applies pressure on a spinning disc (rotor) to slow vehicle. CalipersAlso referred to as Vernier Calipers. A tool used to take precise measurements in thousands of an inch. CarrierSome times referred to as Differential Case or Ring Gear Carrier. This unit transfers the motion from the ring gear to the axle shafts. Carrier BearingThese are the bearings that ring gear carrier rides on. May also be used referring to the driveshaft support bearing used in multiple piece driveshafts. ChromolyChromoly is an abbreviation for “chromium-molybdenum steel” Sometimes called Chro mo. This material is known for its malleability or flexible memory and tensile strength.
Crush SleeveAlso called Crush Collar this is a collapsible spacer placed between the inner and outer pinion bearings to keep a preload on the pinion bearings. PAGE
CVA slang term short for Constant Velocity. A type of axle shafts mainly used in independent suspensions requiring a smooth long travel axle. The Term CV when used to describe a driveshaft or Propeller shaft is referring to a Double Cardin Joint. The Double Cardin Joint looks like two U-Joints in close proximity to each other and is used in shafts that have harsh angles on them. Dial indicatorAn instrument used for tacking precision measurements down to 1 thousand of an inch. DifferentialThe differential is a device that usually consists of gears. These gears allow each of the driving wheels to rotate at different speeds, while supplying equal power to each of them.
Drive SideThe Drive side of the gear refers to the convex or crowned side of the ring gear. This side of the gear is the side of the tooth that the pinion gear pushes off to turn the ring gear when accelerating forward. Full FloaterFull Floater is a term used to describe a type of axle retention system. The Full floater axle is a non-load carrying axle that does not have a wheel mounted to it. This axle usually bolts to a wheel hub that rides on a set of bearings on a spindle that is part of the axle housing. Since the axle requires no support it if floating between the wheel hub and the side gear, Thus Full Floating.
Crown GearCommonly known as Ring gear is the gear that is bolted to the carrier and is driven by the pinion gear thereby turning the carrier.
GasketA Gasket is a type of seal between two mating surfaces preventing leaks.
Coast SideThe Coast side of the gear tooth is the concave side of the tooth. The coast side is loaded when the vehicle is decelerating or in reverse. The exception to this rule is in standard rotation front axles where it is the driven side.

Inner AxleInner axle refers to the inner most axle shaft of a two-piece axle assembly.
I.F.S.I.F.S. Is short for Independent Front Suspension. This type of suspension allows each wheel to move independent of each other over an obstacle. I.R.S.Short for Independent Rear Suspension. This type of suspension allows each wheel to move independent of each other over an obstacle. King PinKing pin is a type of steering knuckle pivot. This system shares the same job as a typical ball joint but is believed to be stronger than the ball joint. This system has been pretty much fazed out by ball joints.
Pinion GearThe pinion gear is the drive gear that turns the ring gear PatternPattern refers to contact pattern between the gears. This contact pattern is used to see how the pinion gear is contacting the ring gear. By reading this print you can determine if different shims are required to set up the proper gear mesh.
Pinion AnglePinion angle refers to the angle that the axle yoke is at compared to the drive shaft and the transfer case or transmission. Pinion Pre LoadPinion Pre Load is the amount of drag that is required to turn the pinion shaft. Drag is a load or resistance keeping something from turning freely
Pinion YokePinion Yoke is a part that connects the pinion shaft to the drive shaft. PosiPosi is another name for a Limited Slip. The Limited Slip is basically a preloaded Open differential. These units usually use a set of clutches springs to preload the spider gear set between 150-450 ft. lbs. This preload provides a breakaway setting. This breakaway is the force required to allow the axles to differentiate
PreloadPre load or drag is a load or resistance keeping something from turning freely.
Limited SlipRaceThe Limited Slip is basically a preloaded Open differential. Also known as a The Race or cup as it is also called, is a press in hardened surface for Posie these units usually use a set of clutches springs to preload the spider gear set between 150-450 ft. lbs. This preload provides a breakaway setting. a bearing to ride on with wearing the surface.. This breakaway is the force required to allow the axles to differentiate LockerMost lockers use a type of ratcheting devise to lock the axles together when power is applied to the unit and allow one wheel to disengage while turning. These units are suited for the more aggressive wheeler as these units do have some drivability concerns. Although minor these units usually clunk and bang but are better suited for the street than a spool. These units will turn both tires even if one is off the ground. Locking HubThe locking Hub is an device that allows the wheel Bearing Hub to be disengaged from the axle shaft. This function is used in part time 4-wheel drive vehicles to reduce the additional drag of the drivetrain when the 4-wheel drive is not needed.
RatioA ratio is a quantity that denotes the proportional amount of one quantity relative to another. Example if your drive shaft turns four times for every one turn of the wheel your gear ratio is 4 to 1..
Reverse Rotation GearThe Reverse rotation gear set was developed for use in front axle applications. The Standard gear when used in a front application is running in reverse, This means the coast side of the gear is being used as he drive side. The convex (Drive) side of the gear is capable of carrying more load than the concave (coast) side. On a reverse ring and Pinion this problem has been corrected to create a stronger axle assembly. This was also done to help with driveline angles and reduce vibration.
