GIS and Forest Fire Ecology Transmedia Project
Essential Question
How would a major fire event affect forests in Southern New Jersey and what mitigation possibilities exist for communities that border these forests?
Project structure • Groups of 5 • Following Roles to be filled – – – – –
Botantist GIS Technician Research Consultant Crossmedia Producer Manager
• Develop project – Must produce required pieces – Interact in collaborative communication and activities – Oral presentation of final product
Transmedia • Everyone is answering the main question • But • They use different media (powerpoint, maps, tables, reports) • They use different points of entry (the botantist looks at plants, the GIS person looks at location, the crossmedia person looks at visuals….)
Botantist • Responsible for identifying vegetation in assigned grid and working with GIS Technician to produce vegetation map • Responsible for working with Research Consultant to produce overview of a typical forest found in southern NJ and mitigation potential based on anatomy of vegetation • Responsible for working with Crossmedia Producer to create visuals illustrating vegetation
GIS Technician • Responsible for mapping and producing database of sample points in assigned vegetation sampling grid and working with Botanist to produce vegetation map for grid. • Responsible for working with Research Consultant to produce maps detailing location of forest types in southern NJ • Responsible for working with Crossmedia Producer to create visuals illustrating how GIS is used in Forest Fire Ecology
Research Consultant • Responsible for producing white paper/documentary detailing project and providing group’s answers to essential question using produced materials • Responsible for working with Botanist to produce overview of a typical forest found in southern NJ • Responsible for working with GIS Technician to produce maps detailing location of forest types in southern NJ and how GIS is used in forest fire ecology • Responsible for working with Crossmedia Producer to produce visuals to compliment white paper/documentary
Crossmedia Producer • Creates any crossmedia materials needed for project – Presentations – Videos – Posters
• Responsible for working with Botanist to create visuals illustrating vegetation • Responsible for working with GIS Technician to create visuals illustrating how GIS is used in Forest Fire Ecology • Responsible for working with Research Consultant to produce visuals to compliment white paper/documentary • Responsible for creating presentation/documentary on mitigation for Forest Fires in NJ
Manager • Responsible for keeping project on timeline – weekly reports to Supervisor • Responsible for meetings with Supervisor to discuss group progress, needs and other administrative duties • Responsible for filling in as other roles when needed or if member is absent from a meeting • Edits and reviews ALL work • Works with Crossmedia Producer to create oral presentation of group’s findings – ties everything together

So what do we do next • Break into groups • By end of period turn in group roles worksheet • Each role will meet with Supervisor to discuss specifically what is due and how to begin working on project • Group Progress Report will be due by April 23.
