TheModernisationeraofthe1950ssawawholesalechangeover fromsteamto dieseltraction.Amongstthesenewtrainswere morethan4,000railcars,orDiesel MultipleUnits,whichwereto revolutionisetraveland,intheprocess,vastly increasepassenger numbers.Lastinginsomecasesformorethan40years,these trains,whichcameinmanydifferentvariations,weretobecomean integralpart oftheBritishRailwaysperiod.DieselMultipleUnits, orDMUsforshort,aretoday adominantpartoftherailwayscene withtheirpopularitybeingdowntotheirlow runningcosts,high utilisationandoperationalflexibility.However,70yearsago, things wereverydifferent.Localandurbantransitwasmostlyinthe handsoftrainsmadeupofsteamenginesandseparatecoaches.
