Classofexpresspassengerlocomotive,introducedin1911toadesignbyCharlesBowenCookefortheLNWR, wereallconstructedwithsuperheatingboilers.Constructioncontinueduntil1922bywhichtimetwohundredandforty-sixexampleswereinservice,onelast memberoftheclasswasaddedin1924.CreweWorksconstructedonehundredandthirty-sevenexamples,WilliamBeardmore&CoofGlasgowninetyexamples andtheNBL twenty.OnehundredoftheclassreceivednamesbutallthosefromBeardmoreremainednameless.SeenhereatCreweisacloseupofformer LNWR‘PrinceofWales’ (LMSClass4P)4-6-0No25621 ThomasMoore. A productofCreweWorksduring1913,shewouldbewithdrawnfromservicelaterin1934. (GB137)

classdesignedbyCharlesBowenCookewereintroducedduring1913specificallyto handletheincreasinglyheavyScottishpassengertrafficoverthelineswithgradientssuchasthatatShap.A totalofonehundredandthirtyenteredservice,all fromCreweWorks,withthelastappearingin1921.(GB714)

Sunday3November1935.TheungainlylookingMRClass2000(LMSClass3P)0-6-4tanksintroducedbyRichardDeeleyduring1907becameknownas ‘Flatirons’ andwerelacklustreperformers.No2034,seenhereatDerbyshed,wasoriginallyconstructedduring1907atDerbyWorkswithasaturatedsteamboiler thatwouldbereplacedwithasuperheatingboilerin1926.Shewouldonlygivethirtyyearsofservice,beingwithdrawnin1937.(GB738)

Tuesday19May1936.SeenacceleratingawayfromNottinghamMidlandstationattheheadofthe‘up’‘Thames-Forth’express,LMSClass5XP‘Jubilee’ 4-6-0No 5655wasalsoaDerbyWorksconstructedmemberoftheclass,enteringserviceinlate1934.Shewouldacquirethename Keith (aBritishAdmiraloftheFleet)in 1937andbewithdrawnnumbered45655during1965.(GB322)

Saturday31July1937.ThelocomotiveseenhereundertakingpilotdutiesatNottinghamLondonRoadLowLevelstationisalreadyseventy-oneyearsold,having beenconstructedatDerbyWorksduring1866.DesignedbyMatthewKirtleyasClass156fortheMidlandRailwaytohaulexpresspassengertraffic,No20002was originallynumbered158A bythemandspentthelastyearsofherlifeonstationpilotduties.Sheisseenherecarryinga16A Nottinghamshedcode.Withdrawn during1947,shewasrestoredfordisplaypurposesandfinallybecamepartoftheNationalCollectionandcannowbeseenondisplayattheMidlandRailway CentreatButterley.(GB760)

Sunday10October1937.AtCreweshedLMSClass7P‘PrincessCoronation’4-6-2No6221 QueenElizabeth isonlyfourmonthsintoheroperationallifeof twenty-sixyearshaulingexpresspassengertrafficontheWestCoastMainLinebetweenLondonandScotland.Thesecondmemberoftheclass,sheentered serviceinJuneofthisyearfromCreweWorksinthestreamlinedformseenhere,thiswouldberemovedduring1946andshewouldbewithdrawnfromservicein 1963.(GB764)

Monday24April1939.SeenatspeednorthofRugbynearBrinklowattheheadofthe‘up’‘MerseysideExpress’isLMSClass7P ‘PrincessRoyal’4-6-2No6208 PrincessHelenaVictoria. A productofCreweWorksduring1935,shewouldbewithdrawnin1962numbered46208.(GB780)

Outofnecessity,picturebooksontherailwaysofgenerationspastarerestrictedwhenitcomestothechoiceofimages available;consequentlyanewcollectioniswelcome,andthisiswhatwehavehereinthisselectionfromtheGeorgeBarlow collectionheldatTheTransportTreasury.

BiographicalnotesonGeorge’slifeasadriverandlaterOperatingManagerontheRomney,HytheandDymchuchlineare containedwithinthetext,sufficetosayitwassomeyearsbeforethis,from1933onwards,thatGeorgewasfirstrecording therailwaysceneonfilmandinparticularthecontemporaryLMSscene.

Herehewasabletorecordatimewhentheproductsofpre-groupingdayswerestilldominantalthoughthearrivalofa certainMrStanierwasstartingtobeseen.WitnesstheneverythingfromLNWRsurvivorsandMidlandstalwartsvaryingin sizefromacrane-tanktoaBeyer-Garrat,andprogressingthroughthefirstStaniertankenginestotheBlack5,Princessand streamlinedCoronationclasses.

Whatmakesthiscollectionsoremarkableisthatitisnotrestrictedtolocoonlyportraits,asGeorgewasadeptatmoving trainshotsaswell.Weareindeedfortunatehiscollectionhassurvivedandmaybeappreciatedbyawideraudience.
